MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “THE MYTH OF THE MODERATE TERRI BONOFF”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | November 5, 2007
St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today issued the following statement regarding Terri Bonoff's campaign for the Third Congressional District.
"No matter how extreme the makeover she attempts during this campaign, Terri Bonoff won't be able to convince voters that she is a bipartisan problem solver and moderate in the tradition of Jim Ramstad. All of the out of state big money in the world she is raising can't obscure the fact that Bonoff is too partisan and too liberal for the Third."
THE FACTS ABOUT TERRI BONOFF
"Moderate" Bonoff's "Biggest Disappointment" Of 2007 Legislative Session: Failure To Pass $5 Billion In Tax And Fee Increases
"The Biggest Disappointment Of The Session Was The Inability To Override A Veto Of A Well-Balanced Transportation Compromise." (Letter To The Editor, Terri Bonoff, Star Tribune, May 30, 2007)
Bill Contained Upwards Of $5 Billion In Tax And Fee Increases. "(Pawlenty) said the transportation bill, with its $5 billion in assorted tax and fee increases,(Patricia Lopez, "Pawlenty Vetoes Gas Tax, Income Tax Bills," Star Tribune, May 16, 2007 would impose an 'unnecessary and onerous burden on Minnesotans that could weaken the state's economy.'" )
Bill Would Have Cost Average Twin Cities Family $250-$500 Per Year. "Minnesota legislators set the course Monday for a historic showdown with Gov. TimPawlenty, approving a transportation bill that features a gas-tax increase and other revenue hikes that would cost a typical three-car family in the Twin Cities between $250 and $500 a year." (Conrad deFiebre, "More For Roads, Less In Your Pocket?" Star Tribune, May 15, 2007)
Transportation Bill Supported By Bonoff Raised Billions In Taxes Over The Course Of Ten Years:
- $2.3 billion in extra gas taxes (including a 2.5-cent-a-gallon increase that would gradually kick in to pay off $1.5 billion in highway bonds).
- $1.5 billion in added registration renewal taxes on 2008 model cars and beyond, solely for roads and bridges.
- $2.6 billion from a half-cent general sales tax and $20 new vehicle excise tax in the metro area, which county boards could impose without a referendum.
- $36 million in rental-car fee increases (Conrad deFiebre, "More For Roads, Less In Your Pocket?" Star Tribune, May 15, 2007)
"Moderate" Bonoff Supported Raising $13 Billion In Taxes On Hennepin County Families For Transit & Stadiums
Bonoff Also Voted For Seven-County Metro Sales Tax To Pay For Stadiums For Both Vikings And Twins. (H.F. 2480, Senate Journal Page 5332, May 9, 2006)
Bonoff-Supported "Stadium" Bill Would Raise $13 Billion For Transit And Stadium Construction. "A solution to the multitude of House-Senate disparities was not as easy to predict, because the Senate bills are laden with broad taxes that put them in fundamental conflict with the plan passed overwhelmingly by the House. …The Twins-Vikings bill would deliver retractable-roof stadiums to each team, along with billions of dollars to the Twin Cities transit system over 30 years, all financed by a half-cent sales tax — 10 cents on a $20 purchase — in the seven metro counties. Of $13 billion raised by the measure, $12 billion would go to transit." (Aron Kahn, "Senate Approves Bills For Three Stadiums," Pioneer Press, May 10, 2006)
"Moderate" Bonoff Backed By Hard-Left EMILY's List
"She's An Abortion Rights Supporter And Opposes Amending The State Constitution To Ban Gay Marriage." (Ben Steverman, "Running Across The Party Lines," Star Tribune, November 9, 2005)
"Moderate" Bonoff Plans To Seek Support Of Ultra-Liberal EMILY's List Political Action Committee. "Bonoff said she's also seeking support from EMILY's List, which she said supported both of her state legislative campaigns in 2005 and 2006." (Shira Toeplitz, "Down On The Farm," Roll Call, October 9, 2007)
- EMILY's List Touts Terri Bonoff's State Senate Victory As A Success For Their Endorsement Program. (http://www.emilyslist.org/candidates/women-helped.html, accessed October 31, 2007)
- EMILY's List Minnesota Contributed $500 To Her 2005 Special Election Campaign. (http://www.cfbreport.state.mn.us/dyncfb/Main.php?do=resultAction, Accessed October 31, 2007)
EMILY's List Is Out-Of-Touch, Far Left Interest Group
According To The Washington Post, In Order To Receive An Endorsement From EMILY's List, A Candidate Must Back Abortion Rights, Including The Right To A Partial Birth Abortion. "A candidate must meet three qualifications to be considered for an EMILYs List endorsement: back abortion rights, including the right to late-term (or 'partial birth') abortions; be a Democrat; and, in primary elections, be a woman." (Thomas B. Edsall, "Emily's List Makes A Name For Itself," The Washington Post, April 21, 2002)
- In 2002, EMILY's List Withdrew Its Support Of Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu After She Came Out In Favor Of A Ban On Partial-Birth Abortion.(Chuck Raasch, "Pro-Abortion Rights Group's Fund-Raising Power Could Be Wave Of PAC Future," Gannett News Service, October 25, 2002) "The organization was heavily credited with getting Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., elected in 1996 in the closest Senate race in the country that year. But the PAC withdrew its support after Landrieu came out for a ban on controversial late-term abortions, referred to by opponents as 'partial birth' abortions."
EMILY's List Refused To Endorse A Female Democrat Congressional Candidate Who Supported Parental Notification And Consent Before A Minor Had An Abortion. "Katrina Swett, the Democratic candidate for the 2nd congressional district, is running on a 'pro-choice, pro-family' platform. But national women's and abortion rights groups have failed to endorse Swett, who has said she would support requiring teen-age girls to notify parents and obtain their consent before getting an abortion. That position has cost her the endorsements of the National Organization for Women, Emily's List, Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League, according to representatives of those groups. . . . Janet Harris, spokeswoman for Emily's List, which solicits donations for pro-choice, Democratic women candidates for Congress or governor, said the group is very particular in its criteria. 'We don't endorse just any woman who' s running,' Harris said." ("Swett's Support Of Parental Consent Costs Her Endorsements," The Associated Press, October 7, 2002)

Transportation Bill- The roads in the Twin Cities metro area are a complete joke. I hate thinking that my car is literally dying because I am stopping on uneven roads with potholes. We all bitch about the roads but only some of us (the DFL) think we should do something about it. I dont think a Republican should EVER complain about roads because they dont ever plan to fix them.
Abortion and gay marriage amendment- The only difference between Ramstad and Bonoff is that Ramstad doesn’t support partial birth abortion, which is a moot point since they are now illegal.
These positions aren’t really that hard-lined liberal positions, they are shared by DFL’ers liberal to moderate and Republicans liberal to moderate.

What this crappy press release fails to say is if she voted for the bill! If I remember correctly she did not! Please list the vote so your readers may have some clarity.

BS Andrew. If the Democrats would quit spending money on 725 million dollar choo choo trains and million dollar bike trails in the middle of nowhere, there would be plenty of money to fix the roads and bridges.
And I for one will not vote for Bonoff. (Yep, she’s running in my district.)

Andrew begins the “Bonoff = Ramstad” campaign! It took 12 hours!
Bonoff will vote with Ellison 99% of the time. Bonoff will vote for Pelosi for Speaker.
If you want to link her to a member of Congress, start with those two.
Just because Ramstad would throw a vote to the Dems once in a while does not make Bonoff Ramstad.
