It was his advice and analysis that caused Paul Wellstone to see through the fog of misinformation by the Bush administration before the Iraq War. Jack told Paul Bush was lying; Paul was convinced, knew he wasn't risking his political career, and voted against the war. When Al first started running he was for endless occupation. Now he wants to leave. He respects Jack because Jack makes so much sense. Appealling to the base does make good political sense.
