RACING DOWN THE ROAD TO IOWA
By Michael B. Brodkorb | January 4, 2008
3:23 A.M.: Safe at home. Our driver was really good and he got us back to Minnesota in a jiffy. I'll have more posts later this morning.
12:30 A.M.: I'm now racing home to Minnesota. I'm really glad I went down to Iowa. It was exciting to see the candidates and the enthusiastic people. I'll keep blogging for the next few hours as I ride home.
10:15 – 30 P.M.: I went over to the Obama event, but I missed his speech. The crowd was huge – I mean huge.

10:00 P.M.: Chuck Norris showed up to Huckabee's party.

9:19 P.M.: The people keep filing into the ballroom. Ed Rollins spoke and fired up the crowd. I'm busy taking pictures, so check back for more updates.

8:42 P.M.: This bus is outside the Embassy Suites:

7:54 P.M.: FoxNews has already called Mike Huckabee as the winner of the Iowa Caucuses. We will be starting our night at Huckabee's event.
7:47 P.M.: Based on early reports, it appears that we will be heading first to Huckabee's event at the Embassy Suites.
7:32 P.M.: Only stopping for one three-minute rest-stop break has us less than one-hour away from Des Moines. We are listening to CNN and FoxNews on the radio to help decide where we will stop first. On the GOP side, it appears to be a choice between Romney and Huckabee.
6:51 P.M.: Thanks to a safe, but very fast driver, we are already in the state of Iowa.
I'm in the back seat of an SUV with a group of Minnesota Republicans and we are racing down I-35 on the way to Iowa. It was a last minute decision, but I'm excited about watching the results come in and seeing some of the candidate speeches live.
I'm note sure where we are headed first, but check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for updates.

Hey Michael:
Enjoy the trip down and back on the I-35 evangelical freeway.
Being the moderate I am, I’m curious to see how Minnesota Republicans respond to the news that Huckabee took down Romney. Instead of you Rs spending all of your time whining about the Ds, please post something tonight/tomorrow about the Rs. Also, Ds, say something about Obama.
Is this bad news for the Republican Party? Could we see a Minneapolis/St. Paul showdown for the nomination? Oh, this is fun…
Seriously, I enjoy staying in touch with Minnesota politics by reading this site, along with others.

Huckabee would be the first Republican that I would vote against. I don’t think he’ll get the endorsement though.
January 3rd, 2008 at 8:51 PM
As a d Democrat, I’m not happy with the results either.
Early prediction is that the former mayor of NY will be the Rs nominated candidate. Mr. Huckabee is the Rs worst nightmare.
Ds, I have no clue.
Don’t ask me who I’m supporting yet…

It’s spontanaiety like this that makes life fun. Have a safe trip!

I am just glad that Hillary will have some tough sledding for the nomination. I don’t want the Ds messing up Republican Caucuses and ending up with Ron Paul or some Godforsaken thing. There would be some shady stuff going on if she wrapped it up early.
As an R, I don’t like Huckabee. He seems almost like a D when it comes to immigration, foreign policy, crime and taxes. To think he gets this much support in Iowa because he is pro-gun and pro-life while being glaringly deficient almost everywhere else on the issue map has me worried. He doesn’t even have mass appeal from the religious right and he is a former baptist minister. As soon as a couple GOP nominees drop out the big picture will be easier to focus on. Won’t be Huckabee.
Besides, the Huckster is almost Clintonian in some of his political moves like his “pulled” negative ad(that got played nationwide) and all that BS with Limbaugh.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:50 PM
Right is RIGHT,
You really are right, RIGHT! Huckabee is no conservative, that’s for sure. His foreign policy is scary as is hte fact that he let out all those criminals. And if I hear one more word out of Ed Rollins, I think I’ll puke. Let’s not forget one of Rollins’ biggest clients, Ross Perot. In other words, the last time Rollins worked for a Presidential candidate, he helped get a CLINTON elected.

McCain is going to have to be considered a winner tonight. What will happen if he takes N.H. and gains steam heading into South Carolina? Will there be a repeat of 2000?
January 3rd, 2008 at 10:23 PM
I like Huckabee(his name is awful). I like Obama.(but he is a lightweight) So I guess it’s all good.
January 3rd, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Chris, that is wrong Perot voters were 50/50 did not affect the race one way or the other…all of you neo cons…who would be your choice then? the only true conservative is Ron Paul..
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Veritas,
You need to go back to whatever psycho ward you escaped out of. You make sane individuals worry about the mental state of the human race.
Can you give me a definition of “neo-con”? I’m still trying to figure out if I should be offended or not…
And Ron Paul is a true conservative? If he traded names with Dennis Kucinich (sp?..who cares??) it would still be the same guy…
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:57 PM
I guess I’ll have to change my name to Barack Huckabee for now. If you couldn’t tell my nomination picks were Obama and Fred Thompson. At least I got one right…so far.

Veritas,
If you don’t think Perot handed Clinton the victory in 1992, you must believe in the CFR/Trilateralist/Bilderberg conspiracy. Oh, wait, you’re for Ron Paul…

Although it really doesn’t matter which clown takes the GreedOverPrinciples endorsement, I’d rather see ol’ Multiple-Choice Mitt at the top. The requirement that southern Baptists would have to pull the lever for a Mormon would simply a Gift From God.
That said, Reverend mIke ran a blessed campaign, and turned out the True Believers.

Hey Chris,
Who handed Clinton the election in 06? Bush needed the Supreme Court to get elected in 00 and the clueless assclowns who were touched by his supposed “moral fiber” in 04. I’ll take the Clinton years of peace, prosperity and 200,000+ jobs created per month over Bush who WILL go down in history as the worst president this country has ever had.
Eight years later and you and the Rush zombies still have Bill on your minds.

Thompson is clearly the canididate the media wanted to marginalize the most. His numbers were basically the same as McCain’s last night and all you hear about is how McCain had such a strong showing.
Huckabee won in the most evangelical-friendly environment in the nation. While that may not have been predictable, considering Romney’s expenditures in Iowa, it certainly is nonetheless respectable. Yes, Huck is pretty liberal. But the church folks really don’t care. All they want is for whomever they back to be true to them. They’ve been fooled before and Huckabee appears trustworthy to their cause.
On paper Thompson is the candidate best equipped to unite the GOP. But uniting the GOP is not enough to win an election. Thompson couldn’t buy a break right now if his life depended on it.
Fred has obviously passed on a much needed facelift and B-12 injections (or something to light his fire) and thus there has been no retail uptake for him whatsoever. His organization has left a lot to be desired. But on paper the guy dwarfs the rest of the pack.
Jimmy Carter is the only Iowa caucus victor to win the Oval Office. While I’m thrilled that reprehensible Hillary came in as the third stooge I assume she will rebound. There are over 100 million reasons why in her bank account.
Chalk one up for Oprah.

And if the country follows IA this time from either the GOP or DFL- we will have a presidency as bad as Jimmy Carter’s to look forward to.
January 4th, 2008 at 11:33 AM
Disclosure time: David Ruth was communications director for the Ventura campaign, after which he went to work for the state-level DFL.

Hey Buck:
The United States Supreme Court didn’t hand Bush the presidency. Despite every effort that the Democrats did (media calling Florida while people were still voting in Florida in pro Bush areas, counting nonvotes as votes for Gore, throwing out the legal votes of military overseas votes)Bush won Florida.
If you want to blame a court for Gore not winning why don’t you look at the Florida State Supreme Court:
* Their behvaior helped encourage that second Supreme Court ruling because they thumb their noses at the US Supreme Court with their second decision. The Chief Justice of the Florida State Supreme Court who voted against the second ruling said if we do something how can guarantee we won’t get our hand slapped.
* The artifical deadline they set so Katherine Harris couldn’t certify Bush and in effect made Bush the winner is what caused Miami Dade County call off the recount they agreed to do. Keep in mind their reason was they didn’t have time to complete a professional recount. If you compare Palm Beach county with a similar number of votes they were late and unprofessional in their recount. Palm Beach county showed that Miami Dade County was right. Furthermore when Gore tried to get a court order to get Miami Dade County to resume their recount the same Florida State Supreme Court said no.
* Lawyers for Bush found one golden thing about the first ruling. They went to a bunch of counties with the first order and got hearings on military ballots which weren’t counted. The basic number of votes 200 might not sound like much, but after the disaster of the second Florida State Supreme Court ruling these votes were why Bush was still winning Florida.
So quit harping on this myth that the US Supreme Court gave Bush the election in 2000. Last time I looked the 51% that Bush got in 2004 was more than any percentage that Clinton got and the number of people were the most that voted for a winner.
And one comment about Clinton’s peace of the 1990′s. When you refuse to engage the military I suppose you have peace. Bin Laden ran free attacking the World Trade Center, embasseys in Africa, the US Cole etc because Clinton didn’t care. Saddam as the records show was trying to get the sancations ended so he can build his weapons and help terrorists. That’s not peace anybody wants!
