Both Norm Coleman and Al Franken have got serious baggage in the gay community. I’ve talked with a number of people off the record within Stonewall DFL who are appalled by Franken’s remarks.

Log Cabin Republicans in the past, has publicly rebuked Republicans for similar things. I’d like to challenge Stonewall to consider this step.

Franken screens with Stonewall DFL at 2:30 PM tomorrow in the Jury Assembly room at the Hennepin County Government Center.

So Yoni following your logic (or lack of) if Norm had just walked in the parade all would be fine in your world. Angry Al makes jokes and has been doing so for many, many years, clearly having an issue with the GLBT community. Maybe you are too young to recall how outraged the GLBT communty was when Angry Al was doing this kind of stuff. Oh that is right, it was OK for that kind of behavior back then. So now that Angry Al TELLS you he is with you, you are on board? Like I said you are a real suppoter there Yoni. I hope you are not actually gay as most gays would find you offensive as hell. You seem fairly mindless, so chances are your not.

Yoni, it seems you are willing to look the other way when it comes to Al. Some gay supporter you are. Many in the GLBT community are VERY concerned with Al and the fact that you will overlook what he has done tells me you are not in the least bit worried about GLBT issues, rather you just want a democRat to win. there is mounting pressure within the GLBT community to push for Angry Al not to get the endorsement. In fact I know of many who will vote for Norm is the DFL put Angry Al up as the candidate. I expect in the next few weeks we will see something about it in one of the GLBT local newletters.

Al is just not good for MN no matter hwo you try to justify it.

You guys should find an entertainment blog somewhere and talk about Al’s humor. Why do it here? How is this news worthy? and why are there like 4 different posts, basically saying the same thing, Al said some jokes about gays. Big deal, again I think its more important to look at Norm Coleman’s voting record on real issues, and how these issues affect real GLBT people. For instance, how bout Norm’s inability to sign a St Paul declaration to celebrate an annual Gay rights parade. The same parade which Al marched in. Actions are stronger than words.

ManGenius, MDE doesn’t want to talk about issues of today because he knows Norm is on the wrong side of nearly every one of them.

Norm can’t win on the issues, he can only win by bashing Al and cutting and pasting 20-30 year old quotes.

Why should I care about Alâ€™s lame attempts at humor as a New York writer whatâ€¦25-30 years ago? Different time, different place and, just maybe, a different Al. Lord knows I canâ€™t drink enough to erase some of the things I did or said 30 years ago. Fortunately none of it was done in the public spotlight like Al.

Why not fill me in on more of his policies that he is promoting today? I mean, other then encouraging the vast numbers of social parasites that might love his policies. Iâ€™d be much more interested to hear his opinions on the latest economic status and how he would intend to fix it then what he considered as open satire target minority decades past.

My question: Is it relevant today?

Norm Coleman voted for the hate crimes bill – which was a key piece of legislation that has been pushed by the Human Rights Campaign for years. Hate crimes legislation isn’t personally my thing – but it is a key legislative priority for the large gay orgs. It will be interesting to see how he votes on repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and the Employment NonDiscrimination Act (ENDA). ENDA will be brought up this year in the Senate. I’ve never been clear where he is at on those things.

Norm Coleman also voted for the Federal Marriage Amendment – which is a bad part of his record. He could have voted against it using the federalism argument that McCain, Sununu and others used.

Also, worth noting, despite getting HRC’s endorsement, and TONS of money from the organization, Amy Klobuchar doesn’t have a clear position on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – she will not cosponsor repeal, and isn’t sure repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is a good idea. My question, is whether the Human Rights Campaign asked her a question about DADT before endorsing her.

Franken jokes a lot and may even ‘hate on them, but in the real world Norm C Coleman opposes the legal recognition of same-sex marriages or civil unions by either the federal or state governments. Which is worse for gays Franken, who supports equal rights for gays, but makes jokes about them, or Norm Coleman?

I’ve got something I’m putting together about Franken’s jokes, etc. And I’d like to get it done before the SDFL this weekend.

I can’t speak to the Franken HRC button. I’d like to think my fellow writers are that clever/savvy… but it’s up to the writer to decide which picture to go with.

Andy: I wonder if Minnesota Monitor will run something about this. I also find it interesting that Minnesota Monitor used a picture today of Franken wearing a sticker from the Human Rights Campaign in a story.

I have never seen that picture used before on Minnesota Monitor’s website. Looks like someone is playing favorites, days before the Stonewall DFL endorsement.

That is true. I’ve heard that same thing from folks in the community.

If he has the “largest pro-gay newsletter in town,” tell him he should actually write something about it. Actually, there’s only one “pro-gay newsletter in town,” so I wonder when Lavender will run something about this.

A client of mine is a mojor player in the GLBT community and produces the largest pro-gay newsletter in town and he says he is very upset that no one wants to talk about this and he is not going to vote for Al if he becomes the candidate. Many in the GLBT community are not happy with Al or some of the political leaders for the GLBT groups as the rank and file do not want Angry Al as the candidate.

The liberal spinners can yap all they want, there is VERY serious concern about Angry Al’s canididcy.

My guess is the DFL muct actually like Coleman as putting Angry Al up against him will go as far as Angry Mike Hatch did in his run.
