Day Calls for Murphy to Apologize To Transportation Commissioner Molnau
St. Paul – State Senator Dick Day (R – Owatonna), member of the Senate Transportation Committee and long-time advocate for transportation issues, today called on Committee Chairman Steve Murphy (D – Red Wing) to apologize to Transportation Commissioner Molnau forprematurely and recklessly blaming her and anyone else connected to thePawlenty administration for the I35W bridge collapse. The NationalTransportation Safety Board (NTSB) said today that it believes that faulty design of crucial components in place since the bridge was firstbuilt 50 years ago caused the collapse.
"It is clear that MNDOT did everything humanly possible to maintain our bridges. I call on Sen. Murphy to immediately apologize to Commissioner Molnau and all the smart and hardworking folks at MNDOT forboth his relentless personal attacks and for assigning blame without sufficient information," said Day.
"Sen. Murphy has said he wants engineers to be making decisions. Well, the engineers have spoken, and I, for one, am going to trust these
bridge experts rather than showboating politicians who have neither knowledge or good judgment but manage to come to their own politicallyconvenient conclusions."
"In press conference after press conference–next to the bridge, ontop of the bridge, under the bridge–Sen. Murphy has made irresponsible pronouncements and stated half-truths that have mislead Minnesotans and polluted the atmosphere in which legislators have to try to work together. Saying the governor is "repulsive" is certainly not helpful. I hope we can all act more like grownups and get serious about finding a solution we can all live with.
"For starters, on the first day of the legislative session I will offer a resolution to cancel the $500,000 of taxpayer’s money that Sen. Murphy authorized to study the bridge collapse because he doesn’t trust the state auditor, MNDOT, consultants hired by the governor, or the National Transportation Safety Board to give him a truthful answer.
"I will propose that we instead spend the money in some useful way that will benefit the Minnesotans who travel around our state every dayby car, bus, and train. I hope that will be a beginning to a seriousdiscussion about how to fix our transportation problems. I look forward to getting to work."
