WALZ FLIP-FLOPS ON OBAMA; WALZ PREVIOUSLY UNSURE IF OBAMA WAS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SOUTHERN MINNESOTA
By Michael B. Brodkorb | February 7, 2008
"WASHINGTON — Rep. Tim Walz has become the fourth U.S. House member from Minnesota to line up behind presidential contender Barack Obama, who carried the state handily in Tuesday's Democratic caucuses.
Walz, a freshman congressman from Mankato, cited Obama's overwhelming support in his southern Minnesota district in announcing his endorsement Wednesday. 'As a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will honor their decision and support Senator Obama,' Walz said." Source: Star Tribune, February 6, 2008

Last year Walz made an interesting statement that he didn't know if Obama was a good candidate for southern Minnesota:
"Asked if [U.S. Senator Barack] Obama is a good candidate for southern Minnesota, Walz said, 'I don't know.'" Source: Rochester Post-Bulletin, January 23, 2007
I'm still curious as to why Walz didn't think Obama would be a good candidate for southern Minnesota.
UPDATE: Here's a follow-up question: what has Obama done in the last year for southern Minnesota for Walz to now support him?

Wouldn’t it only really be a “flip-flop” if Walz had previously said he wouldn’t vote for Obama?
February 7th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Nope, according to MDE any hesitation or saying you need more information immediately makes you a liar and a flip-flopper.
Just like anybody opposed to the war in Iraq, is a traitor, terrorist lover, un-american and must be hiding Al Qaida members in their basement.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
In the republiCon world, Walz indeed flip-flopped, but Norm “I’m A Democrat!” Coleman is a man of principle.
Go figure.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
All he said was, “I don’t know.” Know he seems to know. That is not a flip-flop.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Here’s a question: what has Obama done in the last year for southern Minnesota for Walz to now support him?
February 7th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Say, Michael?
“WASHINGTON — Rep. Tim Walz has become the fourth U.S. House member from Minnesota to line up behind presidential contender Barack Obama, who carried the state handily in Tuesday’s Democratic caucuses.
Walz, a freshman congressman from Mankato, cited Obama’s overwhelming support in his southern Minnesota district in announcing his endorsement Wednesday. ‘As a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will honor their decision and support Senator Obama,’ Walz said.”
Imagine that – an elected official, honoring the sentiment of his district.
Then again, it’s no wonder you don’t get it, Michael – you’re a republiCon, in John Kline’s district. Kline could give a rat’s ass less what his constituents think.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
TPT: What has Obama done for southern Minnesota?
February 7th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
How do I know, Michael? I don’t live there.
But, apparently, the people down there like him.
That’s one of the philosophical differences between today’s republiCon, and traditional Republicans and democrats – today’s republiCons don’t believe in “governing”; they believe in “ruling”.
republiCon John Kline avoids the people at all costs; he knows best. Jim Ramstad holds multiple town hall meetings each and every year, a Ramstad tradition Tim Walz has begun to emulate.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Senator Obama doesn’t represent Southern Minnesota, so it’s a silly question, but what he has done is, over a long campaign, persuade a strong majority of Southern Minnesota Democrats that he is the right person to be president of this Country. Rep. Walz has been watching the campaign as well and made the same judgement. That is not a flip flop, that is called “forming a thoughtful opinion.”
You guys ought to try it sometime.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
It’s a flip-flop and I’d still like someone to answer what has Obama done for southern Minnesota. Walz blew it on answering a softball question and now his answer is coming back to haunt him.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Michael,
What has Mitt Romney done for Minnesota?
February 7th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Or John Mccain for that matter.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
You’re stretching, Michael.
Let me ask you this: what has McCain ever done for Minnesota?
February 7th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Not sure this matters since it will be Hitlery.
In all honestly Osama, er I mean Obama has done exactly what anywhere to get the attention he does?
Hillary’s husband is right, the guy is a fairy tale of a candidate. As Hillary says, she would be ready day one, obviously Osma, er I mean Obama is not by her comments.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Did anyone say they didn’t know if they should support Mitt or John because they didn’t know what either of them had done for southern MN? Nope! So instead of trying to deflect it to the republicans how about answering Michaels question. Thanks guys (and pudd-less)
February 7th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Punky, if you can’t keep up, just say so.
February 7th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Wow, really stretching for material today, Michael?
You better get on Ron Carey to produce some more press releases!
February 7th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Pudd-less, as I thought you don’t think. You lose another round and appear to be in a bit of a daze. Keep trying little guy, someday when you sober up you will see the error of your ways (unless you OD before then).
February 7th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
In the republiCon world, Walz indeed flip-flopped, but Norm “I’m A Democrat!†Coleman is a man of principle.
Go figure.
Not much to figure, TPT. Norm signs Mikey’s paychecks.
February 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Anyone? Can anyone answer what has Obama done for southern Minnesota? Walz didn’t know if Obama would be a good candidate for southern Minnesota, my question is what has changed in a year?
February 7th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
“It’s a flip-flop and I’d still like someone to answer what has Obama done for southern Minnesota”
How arrogant can you get MDE?
Obama, Hillary, McCain, Huck, none of them represent Southern Minnesota, so why should they do specific favors for someone’s congressional district?
In your world apparently, you have to make secret deals with a candidate to bring home the pork, before another candidate should be worthy of your support.
This is seriously one of the worst posts and responses you have ever written. Do you feel okay today?
February 7th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Maybe ol’ Multiple-Choice Mitt fallin’ on the sword has Michael in a funk….
February 7th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Is this blog still relevant?
February 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
It must be cause you guys keep coming to it…
February 7th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Tim your confused. He didn’t support the guy earlier cause he didn’t know what he could do for Southern Minnesota. Now he does support Obama. What changed? What did he learn? Or is he just trying to be one of the cool guys?
February 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Michael -
HOW DARE YOU question Master Obama. He is the greatest! SHUN YOU NON-BELIEVER!
WORSHIP at the altar of Obama and bow before his greatness.
SHUN!! SHUN THE NON-BELIEVER!!
February 7th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Michael,
I have a better question. What position has Obama taken on any issue that will be of interest or benefit to Southern Minnesota.
For that matter, what position has Obama taken on any issue. That guy is long on smile and charisma, and short on accomplishment and ideas.
As for Walz, he could have backed either the socialist from New York or the socialist from Illinois. So, he picked the socialist.
Either Hillary or Obama will do a fine job of delivering the economic hardship that Democrats like to talk about, but which very few are actually experiencing.
February 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
You are so damn dramatic, Michael. You make a mountain out oif a mole hill every chance you get.
Get off this “Tim Walz is a Flip Flopper.” schtick. It’s getting awfully tiring.
Obama came to Rochester in October of 2006 to give Amy and Tim a campaign push. I was there and saw Obama up close. His support of Minnesota’s up and coming candidates helped.
DId you happen to catch a bit of NPR yesterday afternoon. Tim Walz detailed fully his position as a Super Delegate.
After the Caucus results Tuesday evening heavily favoring Obama in the 1st CD and throughout Minnesota, putting his support for Obama was the correct decision.
If this does not explain this you, Michael, I suggest you find another way to waste your time than waste ours with your senseless ramblings.
February 7th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Poli Sci 1001, Craig Grau, UMD: As a member of Congress, there are two ways to view your job: as a “delegate,” who reflects the will of your constituents; or as a “trustee” who is voted into office and is entrusted to use your (or her) best judgment when confronted with issues that matter to constituents.
Gil Gutknecht, former MN 1st District Congressman (paraphrase): When I am voting on an issue, I follow the 3 Cs. First, I follow my Conscience. Assuming there is no moral conflict, my vote shoudl reflect my Constituents. If there is no obvious sentiment coming from SEMN, I am free to follow the will of my Caucus (Republican Party).
You quote the Star Tribune to say “Walz, a freshman congressman from Mankato, cited Obama’s overwhelming support in his southern Minnesota district in announcing his endorsement Wednesday.”
It seems all the world like Walz is following the Craig Grau “delegate” model and/or the Gil Gutknecht “Constituent” C, and is being pretty open about it.
Michael, do you believe that Walz should not be concerned with the will of his constituents in his role as 1st District Congressman?

######## You are aware you do not HAVE to come here??
February 7th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Though Tim Walz liked both candidates, he took to heart the voting done by constituenbts in the 1st CD overwhelimgly for Obama. He listened to the people.
Tim’s own words…
“Last night at the Democratic caucuses, the voters of southern Minnesota overwhelmingly supported Senator Barack Obama and his hopeful vision for positive change. As a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will honor their(constituents) decision and support Senator Obama.”
February 7th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Ya know, SothernMinnyModerate, that’s a nice ‘warm ‘n fuzzy’ story ya just told about Gil.
Unfortunately, it has no relationship to reality in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives.
February 7th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
No I don’t have to BK!!
But when I do, I just see more of the same. Droll topics that really have little to do to inspire insightful dialouge.
February 7th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Um, besides your total love affair with Walz, what great discussion have you brought forth?
Walz is a DFL hack and it seems your job is to go out and counter and negative writings about the man.
February 7th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Walz attained the rank of Sergeant Major, serving in our Nation’s National Guard.
What rank didn’t you achieve, little stones?
Why do you hate those who serve our nation in unform, little stones?
February 7th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH, BK!!!
Been too busy of late to spend time online. A few rare minutes and what do I find???

So what TwoPutt, being in the military doesn’t mean you have good political views. Heck, you’re living proof that a few military members have messed up political views.
Now go back to your lousy little golf shop REMF.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Lick my jump boots, leg.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
How do you know I’m not jump qualified there REMF? LOL, you know nothing about my military service. I think the clap you caught from all those LBFMs rotted holes in your brains, well, what little brains you had in the first place.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
What have you been busy doing kathy? Humping Walz leg? For cryin’ out loud. Start a fan club or something.
Sure MDE makes a mountain out of a mole hill. So what. You’re here yammering on about that dumb SOB.
Walz is nothing more than a pathetic purse poodle for Nancy Pelosi. How pathetic.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
How do you know I’m not jump qualified there REMF?
Because of the time it took you to figure out what a “leg” was, leg.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Say, chestNuts?
Aren’t you supposed to be at a GOPer meeting? You guys have such a toe-tappin’ good time at ‘em….
February 7th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
I knew the minute I saw it what leg meant you moron. Unlike you, I do occasionally do other things, like get up to go to the bathroom, pay attention to my spouse and dogs. I don’t sit glued to a thread waiting for your puerile posts.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I grovel at your feet, Chesty!!! You are a Prince among men!!!
You never cease to bring a chuckle to my day.
What have I been busy with?? Running my business doing lots of Alterations and Custom Commissioned Period Clothing work for clients all around the Country. That also working with various heritage groups restoring Period Clothing from the 19th and early 20th Centuries.
I am so busy, I don’t have time to hump my husband’s leg!!!

Michael – for the second or third time now, I’ve noticed comments by “Big Kahuna” calling Hillary Clinton “Hitlery” and Barack Obama “Osama”. I suspect even the most devout members of your party would shrink from this kind of trash, you would be crying foul in the harshest terms if this kind of stuff regulaly appeared on a Democratic website, and I’m surprised that you allow it to continue.
I know you will say that you can’t control what your commenters print, but you can and do delete comments you don’t like all the time. You have deleted links from your site based on things that were a lot less offensive than this. I know BK is one of your biggest fans – but if you want to have any kind of impact, I think you should either (i) tell him it’s not allowed any more, (ii) bar him, or (iii) delete these comments when they come in. Allowing them on the site paints the whole site as a playground for wingnut trolls.
Maybe encouraging the infantile, bigoted, trolls improves your numbers, but it detracts from the site and speaks poorly of your judgement. Please take action.

“You are so damn dramatic, Michael. You make a mountain out oif a mole hill every chance you get.
Get off this “Tim Walz is a Flip Flopper.†schtick. It’s getting awfully tiring.”
EY: That’s why we call him the Drama Queen!
February 7th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
This guy complains about Hitlery and Osama but doesn’t say one word about twoputt? What a frigging joke!
February 7th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
I personally find the Osama reference in relation to Senator Barack Obama offensive. Osama Bin Awada was offensive when Tom Rukavina said it, and this Osama Obama reference is offensive here – and says more about the person saying it than it does about Barack Obama.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:43 pm

Well by not commenting I guess Brodkorb is cool with fascists and bigots. Does this really surprise anyone?
February 8th, 2008 at 12:03 am
When you see all that rhetorical smoke billowing up from the Moonbats brain, I’d follow the example of their favorite Pres; don’t inhale.
February 8th, 2008 at 5:15 am
Who are you kidding “Why do you tolerate this”?
This kind of stuff, and much, much worse appears on democratic blogs all the time. You can hear the Demoncrats uttering it in public. Heck, there is an example of a Demoncratic Activist doing just that right here……..two putt tommy.
By the way, what is one thing a true facist likes to do………disarm the populace. What does the Demoncratic party want to do……..disarm the populace.
Bigots? Yep, Demoncrats are bigots, prime example is one lovely little high ranking KKK member from West Virginia. But hey, it’s ok for them to be hateful bigots, just not anybody else.
February 8th, 2008 at 6:25 am
So, by supporting “fascists and bigots” you’re accusing Michael of supporting the Democrat party?
Hardly.
February 8th, 2008 at 7:31 am
I’ve looked at TPT’s comments on this post (admittedly not on other posts). They are trollish, juvenile and sophmoric, but if Michael wants to ban comments that sink to that level, there will be very few comments left to post on this blog. But TPT’s comments on this post don’t rise to the level of comparing Senator Clinton to the biggest mass murderer of the 20th century and Senator Obama to the biggest mass murderer of the 21st century.
There’s a difference between crudeness and outright racism, bigotry and hate. I repeat my request for Michael to take some action.
February 8th, 2008 at 7:40 am
Why do you tolerate this:
That’s fair. I agree that “Hitlery,” etc. is over the line.
And in the name of fairness, I trust that you direct the same level of irritation to those on the Left who repeatedly, loudly, and belligerently call President Bush “BusHitler”, Hitler, Murderer, terrorist, etc., etc., etc., and engage in significantly worse activities of racism, bigotry and hate in the name of their socialist agenda.
February 8th, 2008 at 7:52 am
Thank you Chestnut, I agree to spread my irritation equitably.
February 8th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Say, chestNuts?
I’ve never heard anyone, anywhere, refer to Boy Blunder as “BushHitler”.
NEVER.
You should put your tinfoil hat back on; then you won’t hear that, anymore.
February 8th, 2008 at 9:08 am
“This kind of stuff, and much, much worse appears on democratic blogs all the time.”

Say, Why do you tolerate this?
“When in Rome….”
February 8th, 2008 at 9:17 am
2 put… then you haven’t been to rally conducted by Democrats, or read a liberal blog…
February 8th, 2008 at 9:30 am
OH my how sensitive are we?
The Osama, er I mean Obama comment came from Senator Kennedy, I did not make that one up. I simply have a little fun repeating it. Now if I was really so mean and racist I would probably work on the “Hussien” part of his name, or maybe his past drug use as others in the democRat party have done. I surely would not stoop to the level Hillary has and go off about how he supports slumlords. I am not the one passing photo’s of him refusing to put his hand on his heart for the Pledge of Aliegence, nor passing the rumor he will not sing the nation anthem. I also think it is not fair to bring up his Muslim past either.
So, it’s a no in the racist try with Osama, er I mean Obama.
The “Hitlery” thing is because of the names we have had to liten to about Bush and his administartion. It obviously dis just what I wanted it to as it is bugging the shit out of liberals when i do it. Just seems fair to me.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Chestnut, yes I have.
And I’ve NEVER heard Bush The Lesser referred to as “BusHitler.” Nor read it.
NEVER.
Perhaps you have a link?
Oh, I suppose there’s some extremist leftwingnut that might have used that; some (cheney)in’ asshole that makes a GreenPeacer look mainstream.
Because as I’ve often said, there are bootlickers on BOTH sides of the political spectrum.
The term “bootlicker” refers to an individual that unquestioningly obeys.
Here’s the difference, Chestnut: in the democratic party, leftwingnuts are part of the party; in today’s republiCon party, rightwingnuts CONTROL the party.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Perhaps if you knew how to read, you illiterate jackass. Try a Google Search. Visit Kos, or any Democrat-driven blog. Go to an anti-America rally sponsored by communist Democrats.
Here’s a starter: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bushitler
Google search it. Visit Kos. Visit any number of prominent liberal sites.

Actually puddles, they are as bad as you.
One day you may understand why liberals are called monnbats.
That is the whole liberal lifestyle, to go about life all worked up and upset over shit you do not even understand. there must be a really high rate of depression among liberals.
No wonder why I use the smiley faces to help calm the beasts.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Hehehe, puddles, like you have never been to Daily Kos before.
I figure that is where you get half of your bullshit stories.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:44 am
