MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “ON NEARLY THREE YEAR FAILURE TO PAY WORKERS’ COMP, FRANKEN’S STORY STILL DOESN’T ADD UP”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | March 13, 2008

"Al Franken has made a career out of calling others liars but his story about his nearly three year failure to pay workers' comp is simply a lie.  Franken claims he knew nothing about his failure to pay worker's compensation premiums for three years.  Franken claims he knew nothing about a slew of notices asking him to pay his premiums and nothing about repeated efforts to get him to pay his $25,000 fine.  Now we find out that Franken voted in two New York elections at a time when he claims he was living in Minneapolis.  With his complete failure to provide honest answers about his law breaking, Franken only continues to destroy his credibility with Minnesotans." – Ron Carey, Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman

Franken Claim About Failure To Pay Workers' Comp:

Star Tribune:  Franken Not Aware Of Workers’ Comp Fine Because He & His Wife Have “Lived In Minneapolis For The Past Few Years.”  “Campaign spokesman Andy Barr said that neither Franken nor his wife, Franni, were aware of the matter before Tuesday. They have lived in Minneapolis for the past few years and did not know about the state's attempts to reach them in New York City, he said.”  (Kevin Duchschere, “Franken Faces Penalties For Lack Of Workers' Insurance,” Star Tribune, March 5, 2008)

Timeline: The Truth About Franken’s Failure To Pay Workers' Comp:

April 2005:  New York Officials Begin Contacting Franken About His Nearly Three Year Failure To Pay Workers’ Comp; Franken Still Living In New York.  "The Workers' Compensation Board began sending Franken notices in April 2005 after discovering that the insurance hadn't been paid for nearly three years."  (Kevin Duchschere, "Franken Faces Penalties For Lack Of Workers' Insurance," Star Tribune, March 5, 2008)

June 2005: New York Officials Send Penalty Notice; Franken Still Living In New York.  “Officials first sought an explanation. Receiving no response, they sent a penalty notice to Franken in June 2005 that outlined rights to appeal.” (Kevin Duchschere, “Franken Faces Penalties For Lack Of Workers' Insurance,” Star Tribune, March 5, 2008)

September 2005: Franken Votes In New York Primary; Franken Still Living In New York.  (Minnesota Democrats Exposed Blog, Accessed March 13, 2008)

November 2005: Franken Votes In New York General Election; Franken Still Living In New York.  (Minnesota Democrats Exposed Blog, Accessed March 13, 2008)

January 2006: Having Returned To Minnesota After Over Thirty Years, Franken Begins Radio Show In Minneapolis.  Q. "Now you just, moments ago, wrapped up your second show here in Minnesota. How does it feel?"  A. "It doesn't feel that different. (Laughs). You know, it's the same show." (Amy Forliti, "Franken Discusses Politics, Iraq And His Move To Minnesota," The Associated Press, January 4, 2006)
