BONOFF HIDING FROM VOTE CAUSES DELAY IN MINNESOTA SENATE

By Michael B. Brodkorb | April 3, 2008

I will have updates throughout the day about State Senator Terri Bonoff’s refusal to vote yesterday in the Minnesota Senate. Please read the clips below.

Republicans called out Sen. Terri Bonoff (DFL-Minnetonka) and Sen. Jim Carlson (DFL-Eagan) for not voting on an amendment when apparently they were in the chamber. The suspicion is that Republicans want Bonoff, who’s running for congress, and Carlson, who took his seat from Republicans, to take a ‘bad vote’ on an amendment dealing with education.” Source: TPT’s Mary Lahammer, April 2, 2008

“During the debate on the tax bill today, Sen. Julianne Ortman, R-Chanhassen, offered an amendment to allow former members of the military to avoid paying taxes on their military pensions. The amendment would have phased in the tax break. Most other states allow residents to keep their military pensions tax-free.

After a bit of debate the Senate took the vote on the amendment. It failed on a tied 31-31 vote.

But then came the pickle. After the vote, Senators realized that DFL Sens. Terri Bonoff and Jim Carlson were on the Senate floor but didn’t vote. The Republican Senators who supported the amendment and objected to the members’ failure to vote didn’t really have a method to belatedly force them to vote.

‘There simply is not a process to force everyone to vote,’ said Majority Leader Larry Pogemiller, DFL-Minneapolis.

‘We need to resolve this,’ said Senate Minority Leader Dave Senjem, R-Rochester.” Source: The Political Animal, April 2, 2008

    Here’s the link to the .pdf on how senators voted; the votes in question start on page 35 of 141:

    She voted right before her missed vote, and she voted right after her missed vote.

    What happened?

    Maybe she drank too much iced tea?

    Probably the most blatant example of her hiding her true far letftwing liberal beliefs.

    In TPT’s link I found an attempted amendment SF 2869 No aid for cities with sanctuary ordinances. It was to amend Section 12, MS 2006, section 477A.013 by adding a subdivision [12] to read “…Any aid that would otherwise go to a city under that section shall be redistributed to OTHER cities . . . ”

    It seems as if some [mostly Republican] Senators want to TAKE money ($$$$$) from Mpls. & St. Paul and REDISTRIBUTE IT TO THEIR CITIES?

    It seems to me that I have heard of this tax-like concept being trashed before on RIGHT WING RADIO.

    Santa vaca [Holy cow]!

    The vote on the amendment FAILED 31 to 31 (t=62)

    The vote to RECONSIDER the amendment FAILED 32 to 30 (t=62) Therefore it seems that one (1) person moved from the AYE column, to the NAY column.

    45 Democrats + 22 Republicans = 67 Senators
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Amendment FAILS on a vote of 31 yeas, 31 nays = 62

    Not voting: 5 Senators = (67-62)
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Motion to Reconsider FAILS; 32 yeas, 33 nays = 65

    Not voting: 2 Senators = (67-65)
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    el presidente [with the helpful link from TwoPuttTommy] tracked down a REPUBLICAN Senator who it seems did NOT vote on the amendment that failed, 31-31.

    The Republican Senator was one of five (5) Senators who did NOT vote on the 31 to 31 vote.

    However this same Republican Senator is on record of voting on the motion to reconsider. This motion FAILED 32-33.

    Two DIFFERENT Senators did not vote on the motion to reconsider.

    Some presidential advice: there is a difference between good governance and bad politics.

    POST #7 CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION BY el presidente

    It seems that the REPUBLICAN Senator, Debbie J. Johnson, SD 49, DID cast an affirmative VOTE in the amendment that FAILED, 31-31 (t=62).

    However, it seems that she DID NOT VOTE on the motion to reconsider that DID NOT PREVAIL, 32-33 (t=65).

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    All 22 Republican Senators therefore, as a single group, seemed to have voted to not tax GOVERNMENT [military] PENSIONS.

    I think however, as a group, that the Republicans will not do the same for other GOVERNMENTAL WORKERS. In fact, I think that they will attempt to slash the budgets of those workers.

  9. el presidente Says:

    CORRECTION BY el presidente

    The motion to reconsider DID PREVAIL.

    The question on the ADOPTION of the RECONSIDERED MOTION, FAILED 32 yeas, 33 nays (t=65).

    [You can read this by clicking on TwoPuttTommy's link (post #1). It will be: Journal of the Senate: 8292; 98th day; printer page 38/141].
