NRSC PRESS RELEASE: “LIES AND THE LYING LIARS WHO TELL THEM”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | April 24, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. — It appears Democrat Senate candidate Al Franken has ripped a page from his 2003 book and now finds his own credibility in question.

It all started with a difficult-to-believe tale about his complete lack of knowledge of a $25,000 workers compensation fine in New York State. Al Franken says he didn’t get the dozen letters the state of New York sent him.

Then, last Wednesday, the Star Tribune broke the news that Al Franken’s company, Alan Franken, Inc. (AFI) had failed to pay taxes in California from 2003 to 2007.

The comedian’s first response? An unsigned, undocumented, and unproven document the campaign claimed Franken’s company’s accountant had sent to the state attempting to cease doing business in California in 2003.

When that came under fire, Franken’s campaign switched gears.

In a Roll Call article, Franken’s campaign is now claiming that “AFI’s accountant did not dissolve the corporation properly and sent the incorrect form, so the board never recognized that it was no longer operating in the state.” (Roll Call, 4/23/08)

Form? What form? Where’s the form Al Franken’s company now claims they filed?

And, if the company was supposedly dissolved in 2003, why did Al Franken’s company file California corporate disclosure statements in 2004 and 2006 — informing the state of the company’s intention to continue doing business in California?

So which is it? Letter? No letter? Form? No form? No work in California after 2003? Still working in California in 2006?

“These issues have exposed Al Franken as incompetent,” NRSC Communications Director Rebecca Fisher said. “So is Franken simply incompetent or is this a concerted effort to deceive the public and the press?”

“The same guy who asked us to believe he stopped opening mail in 2005 now expects voters to buy this fairy tale,” Fisher added.
