MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “SIXTH CD DEMOCRATS ENDORSE OUT OF TOUCH ELWYN TINKLENBERG”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | April 26, 2008
St. Paul- Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey issued the following statement after Sixth Congressional District Democrats endorsed Elwyn Tinklenberg for Congress.
“Elwyn Tinklenberg is a far-left liberal who is out of touch with the Sixth Congressional District. Whether he is advocating higher gas taxes or supporting gun control, Tinklenberg is too liberal for the Sixth District. No matter how much mud Tinklenberg and his left-wing allies throw in this campaign, I am confident Representative Bachmann will be reelected because she has been a strong and effective leader.”
Tinklenberg Out Of Touch With Sixth District:
Tinklenberg On Impeaching President Bush: “I Would Support A Resolution For Impeachment If It Was Brought To Me.” (MPR’s “Midday,” May 10, 2006)
Tinklenberg Opposes Federal Amendment Defining Marriage As Between A Man And A Woman. “Both Tinklenberg and Wetterling said they oppose a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman and barring any state law giving the legal benefits of marriage to unmarried couples.” (Patrick Sweeney, “Wetterling Makes Her Second Try For 6th: Tinklenberg Also Seeks DFL Backing In Right-Leaning District,” Pioneer Press, May 12, 2006)
Tinklenberg Supports Clinton Era Gun Control Measures. “(Tinklenberg) also said, however, that had he been in Congress in 2004, he would have voted to extend a federal ban on assault rifles.” (Patrick Sweeney, “Wetterling Makes Her Second Try For 6th: Tinklenberg Also Seeks DFL Backing In Right-Leaning District,” Pioneer Press, May 12, 2006)
Tinklenberg Has Long Supported Higher Gas Taxes. “Tinklenberg blames Republicans for refusing to raise the gas tax. … ‘In eight years, there was no substantive funding program that came out of the House of Representatives,’ Tinklenberg said.” (Jennifer Brown, “Minnesota Gov Candidates Face Roadblock,” Stateline.org, July 10, 2002)
Tinklenberg Attacked President Reagan For Not Supporting Tax Increases. “Ventura-era Transportation Commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg was mayor of Blaine in the 1990s, and leader of a coalition of mayors who went to the Capitol in about 1992 or 1993 to ask for another of the gas tax adjustments that had been the pattern. He ran headlong into a new kind of Republicans. ‘It was the national mood that was instilled by Ronald Reagan, that said taxes are bad, government is bad,’ said Tinklenberg, now a DFL candidate for Congress. ‘We got into a pattern of arguing about tax increases.’” (Lori Sturdevant, “Providing For The Public Good Needn’t Be Such A Partisan Fight,” Star Tribune, February 24, 2008)
Tinklenberg Broke Promise Not To Run:
“Former state transportation commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg told the Times he won’t run for the DFL Party endorsement for the 6th Congressional District and won’t be a candidate in 2008. ‘I just came to the conclusion that it wasn’t going to be possible for me to do that again this soon after the last campaign,’ Tinklenberg said in a Times CapitolCast interview. ‘I need to take some time now to focus on my family and on my business.’” (Lawrence Schumacher, “Tinklenberg Decides Against Run For House Seat In 2008,” St. Cloud Times, May 6, 2007)
Tinklenberg: “That kind of campaign, to do it well, puts a tremendous burden a candidate – in terms of their family, in terms of their time, in terms of in my case in their business. You almost have to put everything on hold while you do that. And after a lot of time and a lot of thought, and talking with my wife, talking with people I respect in Washington and here in Minnesota, I came to the conclusion that it just wasn’t going to be possible for me to do that again this soon after the last campaign.” (El Tinklenberg Interview, “CapitolCast with Larry Schumacher,” St. Cloud Times Podcast, May 6, 2007)
Tinklenberg: “It’s not going to be possible for me to be the candidate.” (El Tinklenberg Interview, “CapitolCast with Larry Schumacher,” St. Cloud Times Podcast, May 6, 2007)
Flashback: Tinklenberg Criticized Patty Wetterling For Changing Her Mind About Running:
Tinklenberg Calls Wetterling Decision “Disappointing.” “‘It’s disappointing. What drew us to her most was the idea that she was not just another politician,’ he said Friday. ‘Now, she says things have changed. I’m sad to say I believe one of the things that has changed most is Patty.’” (Lawrence Schumacher, “Wetterling Declares Bid For 6th District,” St. Cloud Times, February 4, 2006)

Carey is such a broken record. He can’t do better than “far-left liberal?”
April 26th, 2008 at 7:27 PM
Truth is truth. When that’s all DFL’ers are endorsing one has to wonder who has the “broken record”, Ron Carey or the DFL.

UUUGGGHHHH……….The dems are FOR EARMARKING!!!!!!!……Yeah, I’d say all Bachmann has to do is smile and say no earmarks.

Oh my god, Tinklenberg opposes ASSAULT RIFLES! Atta boy, Mikey, the GOP and Michele Bachmann support ASSAULT RIFLES! That’s just what the 6th CD needs. ASSAULT RIFLES! Tell me, Mikey, what do you hunt or target shoot with ASSAULT RIFLES–well, besides people? Are these the GOP’s values? Is this the big issue for 6th CD folks, whether or not they can own an ASSAULT RIFLE? Are you f/en serious Brodkorb? We like to hunt and we like our guns over here. But we know the difference between nutjobs popping off ASSAULT RIFLES and hunters. Clearly you don’t.

Wave bye bye bachmann….
April 27th, 2008 at 7:19 AM
If Tinkleberg wasn’t out of touch with reality, he wouldn’t be a Democrat.
April 27th, 2008 at 7:21 AM
The Second Amendment says nothing about hunting. And the federal ban on assault rifles has had no impact… and is probably unconstitutional. I’d vote against it too.

Like the infantile Left who hates everyone who doesn’t toe their communist, anti-American line, Tinklenberries is no different and the majority of us in the Sixth District are not going to have this ass-clown and the DuMB whine-asses who stalk Michele’s every move-take this district. We are well organized and we are more determined then ever to win this November.

If El is out of touch, does that mean most of America wants to hug the president in a thoroughly embarrassing fashion?
Do most Americans fear the government taking their right to choose (lightbulbs)?
Do most Americans think there is a secret Iranian plot to create an Iraqi terrorist theme park?
If that is mainstream Minnesota, I am glad as hell I am so out of touch.

Why does Carey insist on labeling every DFLer at a far left liberal? Tinklenberg is not far left, Madia is not far left…
Surely it fits in with labeling Paulsen as a centrist and Bachmann as, well, effective?

Frank, dipshit, where in the Constitution does it say government has the power to dictate everything I purchase?
For a jackass from a party to feigns concern over the erosion of civil liberties (especially when the activities they bitch about don’t constitute such a thing), you sure are eager to hand over all your decisions to the government.
April 27th, 2008 at 8:31 PM
Hey Nutty-
If you can interpret the constitution to have it say you have the right to buy an AK-47 with cop killer bullets, I am pretty sure I can find a place where it says that congress can enact laws that will protect the people and environment of the United States.

Tinklenberg Opposes Federal Amendment Defining Marriage As Between A Man And A Woman. “Both Tinklenberg and Wetterling said they oppose a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman and barring any state law giving the legal benefits of marriage to unmarried couples.†(Patrick Sweeney, “Wetterling Makes Her Second Try For 6th: Tinklenberg Also Seeks DFL Backing In Right-Leaning District,†Pioneer Press, May 12, 2006)
EY: John McCain, the GOP Presidential candidate also opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment – on the basis that this should be an issue left to the states to decide.
Is this the best the state gop can do? It’s pretty pathetic.

Poor Eva, hates Bachman so much I think her teeth hurt.
Best to get medication for that Eva as you know as well as I do Michelle is not going anywhere as she has a huge amount of support in her district.
Sure is fun to hear you liberals whine and cry about her though and also fun to hear you cheer how you will win in November when you know full well you have about as much chance of that as Franken winning the senate seat.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:13 AM
I haven’t interpreted the Constitution that way. And neither should you, moron.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Like I said, for a jackass screaming myths about civil liberties having been violated, you sure are prepared to hand over your ability to make personal decisions to the federal government.
BTW — those light bulbs are crap. The light they emit sucks, they don’t work in cold weather, they’re a toxic hazards if you break one and their impossible to discard. Pardon me if I prefer the right to choose the safer, better alternative that’s 300 percent less expensive.
