“NON-PARTISAN” SECRETARY OF STATE MARK RITCHIE USES DECLARATION OF INDEPEDENCE TO RAISE MONEY FOR HIS CAMPAIGN
By Michael B. Brodkorb | May 7, 2008
Secretary of State Mark Ritchie’s campaign committee recently sent out an e-mail announcing that an original printing on the Declaration of Independence was coming to Minnesota. The e-mail contained a link to Ritchie’s campaign website, which provides an opportunity for people to contribute to his campaign committee.
Just so we are clear, “non-partisan” Secretary of State Mark Ritchie used an appearance of an original printing of the Declaration of Independence to fundraise for his campaign.
This guy has no shame.

I’m not seeing any ad……on this……it specifically states “FREE”…..where is it asking for money?

The e-mail contained a link to Ritchie’s campaign website, which provides an opportunity for people to contribute to his campaign committee. I don’t see a reason why Ritchie’s campaign committee needed to send out an e-mail. But it did provide Ritchie with an opportunity to raise some money.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
You’re scrapin’ the bottom on this one, Michael.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
“provides an opportunity”……good grief! Isn’t anything happening in Franken’s world for you to post?
May 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Every time Michael points out a DFL’ers hypocrisy or stupidity (or both) it’s “scrapin’ the bottom” to these guys.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Polinaut is reporting that Pawlenty will be attending the SOS event with the Declaration of Independence. Obviously he’s figured out it’s “FREE” and doesn’t feel the need to contribute.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
There’s a reason Michael didn’t link to this e-mail, and that’s even Michael knows this one is a stretch (at best).
May 7th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
If this letter were being paid for by the taxpayers, you would have something to complain about. But, since it is being paid for by Mark Ritchie for Secretary of State, he can put whatever the hell he wants in the letter.
May 7th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
If the letter came from his campaign, why wouldn’t it include a link for contributions. I also can’t see why the campaign shouldn’t highlight something the candidate was a part of…
Sorry, I gotta side with the other guys on this one Michael. If this had come from his official state email, I’d take a different view… but you said the campaign sent out an email with a link for campaign contributions.
I don’t see the problem.
May 7th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
There is no reason that Ritchie’s campaign committee needs to be sending out an e-mail about the Declaration of Independence.
May 7th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
west metro democrat:
I used your own link you supplied. at the job is the Secretary of State’s promoting the Declaration of Independence. On the bottum is a button that said’s “Contribute”
He is in effect using the Declaration of Independence to raise funds as Mike charged!

Go with that, Michael.

[more info]
Read ye, read ye.
There is opportunity to view a copy of the Declaration of Independence.
Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration.
There were between 150 and 200 copies printed in the print shop of John Dunlap the night of July 4, 1776.
I believe that you may have an opportunity of seeing one of these types of copies, however, I do not know for sure.
Perhaps MBB/MDE-IRS will kindly supply that kind of information.

Michael, This one does seem weak. The liberal village idiots (el two of them), aren’t even blathering incoherently off-topic. See what you can do to set them off next time.
Thanks for providing the truth. Even the libs can’t stay away!

Chestnut;
Well said Well said
Michael and Walter;
For Minnesotans that didn’t know this historical document was coming or the dates, it was nice gesture.

MBB: “This guy has no shame.”
———————————-
Michael B. Brodkorb (MBB) then [turns around and] plays the “shame” game by putting Senator David Senjem’s letter to Senator Larry Pogemiller, out on a blog just a few hours later!
It seems to me that perhaps Mark Richie & Michael Brodkorb (M&M) could be two peas in a pod that just might have selective-type shame!?!?
May 7th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
MB is still sore that Richie didn’t fall for the ambush he and Kiffmeyer set up.
May 7th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
At what point do repeated unethical behavior and misuse of his office by Richie rise to a criminal or impeachable offense?
May 7th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Good god, Brodkorb, does the GOP pay you by the post or what? Are there no minimum content requirements? Why do you care whether Ritchie spends his campaign money sending out emails about the Declaration of Independence? Why should the GOP care? Why should anyone care? Is there one cent of taxpayer money involved here? Go get a real job. Maybe in comedy. This one’s a real laugher.
May 7th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
Wow Brodkorb, this is quite the reach, and ‘walter hanson’ just blindly defends it. WOW the tool shed is full.
now if chestnut would just admit that Franken is a superior candidate to Coleman…… just kidding chestnut…
i am losing confidence by the day. especially after watching a great address from good ‘ol norm @ the galla at the Dome tonight(even if it was a video recording)….
May 8th, 2008 at 12:22 am
“This guy has no shame.” Oh my goodness…
How dare this man send an email to people tells them about a near once in a lifetime chance! Especially not when that email contains a link to his website (like any campaign email would) that contains a link to a contribute page (like any campaign website would).
Seriously Michael? Some of the items about Ritchie you’ve posted have had some merit, but this is bad even by your standards.
May 8th, 2008 at 6:36 am
Hey, wasn’t there supposed to be some HUGE revolt over that housekeeping error in last year’s transportation bill? I recall it was going to unravel the entire bill when it came up again. I also seem to recall a similar number of inane posts about that non-issue here awhile back. Where’s the follow-up to that howler Brodkorb?
May 8th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Yup. I got one of those too. I haven’t read the comments above but just to be clear, this went out to the same e-mail addresses that he was caught on earlier this year for misusing. Mark’s a nice guy but why does he still invite scrutany to his office by sending to these people?
May 8th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Yoni:
Why are you blindly defending Mark Ritchie?
I used the link that a defender of Ritchie used saying that Ritchie wasn’t using the Declaration of Independence to raise funds.
(see link on post #4)
You get Mark Ritchie’s website.
On the bottum of that website is contribute button.
In effect using the Declaration of Independence gets people to the website and see the contriubute button.
In effect it helps him raise money.
In effect he is using the Declaration of Indepence to Raise money.
No ifs ands or buts.
Nobody should be defending Ritchie on this. Instead you attack me and Michael for point this out.
HC DFL:
It’s nice the document is coming, but that still doesn’t give him the right to use it to raise money.

“The copy, known as the “Dunlap Broadside,” is one of only 25 remaining original copies of the Declaration type set and printed on the evening of July 4, 1776 – after being signed by John Hancock, president of the Second Continental Congress, which was responsible for writing the document,…”
