LIVE-BLOG OF 2008 REPUBLICAN STATE CONVENTION

By Michael B. Brodkorb | May 30, 2008

7:09 p.m.: The convention has adjourned for the evening. I’ll have more posts later tonight on Minnesota Democrats Exposed.

4:03 p.m.: Senator Coleman’s speech is being very well received by the delegates.

3:25 p.m.: Senator Coleman was unanimously endorsed by a voice vote for re-election. It took less than two minutes – this is Coleman country!

12:24 p.m.: We have been debating changes to the MN GOP’s constitution for the last hour. This always winds up the delegation for a spirited debate.

12:12 p.m.: We’re moving through the convention business in very efficient manner. King Banaian of SCSU Scholars is also live-blogging the convention.

11:22 a.m.: As a delegate to the convention, I’ve been busy voting on motions. I’m back in the media/blogger section and I’ll be posting more updates.

I’m down in Rochester at the 2008 Republican State Convention. I’ll be posting updates throughout the day and will be posting pictures on my Flickr page. Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for updates

BTW: Click here to read the excerpts from Franken’s graphic Playboy column. I couldn’t resist another plug for Franken’s graphic Playboy column.

Is there anyone else liveblogging this convention?

Also, Mike: what’s your opinion on this power struggle going back and forth between certain BPOU chairs and the Exec. Committee on the constitutional changes?

Whose payroll are you on today Mikey?

  3. Owl Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 1:04 PM

Mike: Can you explain the Minnesota Conservative Delegate Team to us? Remove if double posted – net troubles.

    MDE Exposer,
Don’t you have some puppies to kick?

  5. Coleman Exposer Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 4:12 PM

That’s funny. Mary LaHammer at TPT described Norm’s reception thusly:

“Sen. Norm Coleman just took to the podium to accept the Republican nomination. There are a lot of empty chairs in the room. There was no music to set a mood and excite the crowd. The anti-establishment and anti-McCain crowd only gave him tepid applause, especially when he said “America needs John McCain.”"

Well CE, I suppose National (Socialists) Party Radio would want to broadcast counterpoint.

  7. Chestnut Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 4:58 PM

… kinda like on Super Tuesday when for 24 hours the conversation was: “Let’s check in on Obama. I like Obama. What do you like about Obama. Obama is wonderful. Hillary is talking to her supporters now. But let’s check back to what our Obama reporter is reporting about Obama.”

But back then, nobody understood the extent of the racism driving Obama’s “spiritual” movement.

  8. Lawrence Says:

“Senator Coleman’s speech is being very well received by the delegates.”
Well-received . . . shouts of “Anwar! Anwar! Anwar!” Is anyone shouting, “Cap and Trade! Cap and Trade! Cap and Trade!” They should be!

  9. Mike Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 5:28 PM

The anwar deying minumum wage increasing former democrat Norm Coleman won without contest. I respect the hell out of republicans for sticking with their guns on the war, but you better be i more then right on that issue, because your allowing Democrats to otherwise take controll of your party.

  10. Eva Young Says:

According to the Big Question there was an anonymous flyer going around attacking Norm Coleman. Why a voice vote rather than balloting? Was Norm’s campaign afraid of being embarrassed by many No Endorsement votes?

Earlier this week, Jason Lewis was saying Club for Growth should run ads attacking Norm Coleman on Cap and Trade.

    http://lloydletta.blogspot.com/2008/05/jason-lewis-urges-club-for-grown-to-run.html

Minnesota Majority has an action alert on that topic also.

I just heard on the news that there was a fistfight on the floor between a Ron Paul supporter and a McCain supporter.

    Any details?

  12. Chestnut Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 6:19 PM

Yeah, the Ron Paul supporter showed up all pissed off because his mother found out he stole all the spare change out of her purse.

Ron Paul is borderline retarded. He ought to be a Democrat.

  13. Eva Young Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 6:20 PM

I just heard that during Norm Coleman’s “endorsement vote”, there was no call for nays – so how do you know it was unananamous?

  14. FiercelyIndependent Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 7:17 PM

Wait until tomorrow – the whitewash will continue as Ron Carey is going to announce there’s no problem with the GOP Finances.

No chance for dissent on Norm; no chance for a good look at the books.

Yet some people still wonder why Independents left the party?

Bet on the Paulites bolting, too.

  15. Chestnut Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 7:50 PM

    “Independents left the party” …

If they were “in the party” they wouldn’t be “independents” you retard.

By the way… Coleman’s got support of over 35 percent of “Independents” … 95 percent of Republicans… and 35 percent of Democrats….

Coleman has broad-based support… He should feel pretty good.

  16. Cash N. Carey Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Eva, Don’t you have some good Christians to kick around today?

  17. Chestnut Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 8:23 PM

Yeah, Eva… don’t you have some gathering of bigots to attend?

  18. el presidente Says:

Obama is coming to St. Paul on Tuesday evening at the Excel. It will be a great chance to see him.

  19. Chestnut Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 9:02 PM

Yeah, Obama is coming to Saint Paul with a message of hope, change and KILL WHITEY!!!!!

  20. buck Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Wow, Chestnut. You post stupid shit like that and then you have the balls to call someone else retarded. Please, don’t breed.

  21. Chestnut Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 9:39 PM

Hey buck, it’s satire. … you know, because Barak Obama seems to be surrounded by an entire legion of racists…

On breeding… you’ll be happy to know that I have a beautiful baby boy, and a bun in the oven…

  22. el presidente Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 10:12 PM

    Chestnut, Obama is bi-racial.

Did you perhaps mean that half-perhaps he is half-surrounded by a half-legion or half-racisists?

  23. Chestnut Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 10:34 PM

Obama long ago rejected his white ancestry. And there’s no such thing as a half-racist. The fuckers Obama surrounds himself with are flat out hate-mongering racists.

  24. Swiftee Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Will Michele Obama be proud for the first time to be in St. Paul?

Will there be a singing of our national anthem for Barack Hussein Obama to ignore?

Will Louis Farakkkhan be acting as MC?

Will Democrats get in free if they are sporting HAMAS kiffeya’s?

  25. MDE Exposer Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 11:22 PM

Will Tom Swift put down the meth pipe anytime soon?

  26. el presidente Says:
    May 30th, 2008 at 11:36 PM

This is what REALLY happens in MINNESOTA when a bi-racial person runs for President of the United States.

    Another Digital Camera Moment?

  27. Ryan Hagelstrom Says:
    May 31st, 2008 at 12:34 AM

Nice press release I hear all over the news “Norm Coleman endorsed by unanmaous vocal vote”. Yeah you kind of get that when you don’t call for nays. The vote wasn’t even valid but it wasn’t a fight worth fighting. How about you read the platform Norm?

  28. Chestnut Says:
    May 31st, 2008 at 3:40 AM

Naaa, el p. It’s what happens when a phoney, unaccomplished race-baiting jackass such as Obama runs for President.

  29. Tim from Woodbury Says:
    May 31st, 2008 at 12:36 PM

    Chestnut,

Do you consider yourself a Christian? I believe in the past you have claimed to be a Christian. Your words do not match your claim.

  30. Red Girl Says:
    May 31st, 2008 at 3:17 PM

Wow, Tim. I did not know that pointing out the truth makes you sound un-Christian.

However, I do know that ignoring the truth is downright stupid.

  31. Michael Neitzel Says:
    May 31st, 2008 at 4:09 PM

This is not Norm country. You neo-cons are going to get comeuppance this fall.

Harold Shudlick was denied the chance to run for the endorsement or to even be nominated from the floor. We had no chance to vote nay, because propaganda ministers on stage turned on video.

Coleman speech was not well received and we yelled out ANWR and End Enthanol.

The Republican party of MN has it head way up its you know what. We don’t believe the lip service anymore.

  32. Chestnut Says:
    May 31st, 2008 at 4:21 PM

So Tim, are you saying that Christians just need to accept phony race-bating jackasses who demand to be president, even though they have no knowledge or experience that qualifies them for the post?

    Is that what you’re saying?

  33. jay Says:
    June 1st, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Coleman is less of a socialist than Franken.
McCain is less of a socialist than Obama.

    Is this all we have?

I am going to hold my nose and probably vote for both of them. But, good Lord, I wish we had better CONSERVATIVE choices.

Fear and loathing at the MN GOP 2008 State Convention.

I attended the MN GOP convention as an alternate. I was embarrassed for and ashamed of the actions of Ron Carey and everyone else who participated in the manipulated National Delegate nominating process. The first thing greeting everyone who entered the convention floor were 2-10×20 (or larger) red banners flanking the stage with the names of 14 “Carey approved” national delegates and alternates. Then during the convention, red hatted McCain goons with earphones walked the aisles and balconies holding up either red signs with NO or green signs with YES printed on them to tell everyone how they should vote each time a vote came up. During the convention, the red hatted McCain goons were constantly conferring with Ron Carey. During the nominating vote, one of the McCain goons went to the mike and made a “point of information” and announced that “the McCain endorsed national delegates” were listed on the red banners. The supposed “party of freedom” demonstrated all the attributes of a party of manipulation and coercion.

There were numerous proposed changes to the MN GOP constitution, all designed to
more tightly centralize and expand the powers and control of the GOP state central committee and quash any possibility of any upstart “grassroots” movement not in conformance with central committee mandates. You know, that messy “we the people” stuff.

At the end of the convention, the MN GOP proved just how out of touch with reality it is by inviting the neo-con hero Karl Rove, who Ron Carey called a “rock star” to be the featured speaker. I thought the appropriate description for someone who discloses the name of a CIA agent is traitor.

Hey, Chest-nuts; I don’t have one word about Ron Paul in my post, even though he makes the rinos Normy and Timmy boy look like flaming socialists. You have a big mouth, but not enough intellect to fill the pie hole.
