MUST READ FROM CHECKS & BALANCES: “PLANNED PARENTHOOD OPPOSES FRANKEN ENDORSEMENT”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | June 4, 2008
Shawn Towle of Checks & Balances. I spoke with Shawn this evening and he said I could post his entire story about Planned Parrenthood opposing Al Franken’s endorsement on Minnesota Democrats Exposed.
Representatives of Planned Parenthood even thanked Representative Brod and Senator Wergin for the letter they released earlier this week.
Towle’s story is below.
###
We received a copy of an email sent out by Connie Perpich, Planned Parenthood’s Senior Director of Legislative Affairs with an attached letter to the editor for the Star Tribune from President of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Sarah Stoesz. Both documents are critical of the content chosen in the comedic work of U.S. Senate Candidate Al Franken (D).
With the DFL State Convention only two days away we found this piece to be an interesting addition to the developing opposition to Franken’s expected easy endorsement.
The Perpich Letter:
Dear Friends,
Below is a copy of a letter submitted to the Minneapolis Star Tribune last week in response to the excerpts from the Playboy article of Al Franken that was reported in the papers. If you have not yet actually read these quotes, we strongly suggest that you take the time to read them for yourself. We are quite confident that most Minnesotans will be very familiar with them towards November of this year.
We also want to express our appreciation for the perspectives expressed in the letter by Rep. Brod and Sen. Wergin that was distributed to the press yesterday and is referenced in today’s metro papers. We are very concerned by the misogynist remarks of some of these statements and find them degrading to women. We certainly support First Amendment rights of all Americans, but do believe these comments have gone beyond the bounds of what is appropriate for any candidate for elected office. If half of these allegations are true, it is very difficult for us to foresee the Planned Parenthood of Minnesota Action Fund Board endorsing the candidacy of anyone with such extreme perspectives.
It is our understanding that you may want to converse with Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Congressman Tim Walz, Congressman Keith Ellison, Congressman Jim Oberstar or Congressman Collin Peterson on other potentially disturbing remarks that are rumored to also be part of Mr. Franken’s repertoire. We hope that you will all join us in requesting that the DFL state and party leadership take seriously the offensive nature of these remarks and make every effort to fully inform all candidates for public office this year as to the true nature and extent of them.
Please join us at our Action Fund reception at the DFL convention this Friday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. on the lower level of the Kahler Hotel in Rochester. We would appreciate discussing with you at this time our strong objections in this matter.
Connie Perpich
Sr. Director for Legislative Affairs

The Stoesz Letter:
For eighty years Planned Parenthood in Minnesota has pursued a mission to provide medically accurate education on human sexuality and reproduction. Issues such as unintended pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections among teens need to be raised in public forums such as Congress and the state legislature. In those discussions, locker room humor is inappropriate, these are not laughing matters.
It has been a long struggle to raise awareness of the dignity of girls and women in our society. It is unthinkable that the citizens of our state will turn their backs on those achievements. Minnesotans deserve, and in November will demand, candidates for state and federal office who reflect our values. They must be able to demonstrate not silliness, but maturity and responsibility in addressing issues of sexuality and reproductive health.
Sarah Stoesz
President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund in Minnesota

From the Sarah Stoesz Letter:
“Issues such as unintended pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections among teens need to be raised in public forums such as Congress and the state legislature. In those discussions, locker room humor is inappropriate, these are not laughing matters.”

Then it seems as though the more female oriented: “GET YOUR SEXY ON,” and as seen in the GOP Convention Planning would the QUALIFY as a LAUGHING matter.
Along with shopping at the Mall of America [GOP Convention Planning with GOP letter-signer Annette Meeks being a "Polichick" at the Mall of America] at let’s say Victoria’s Secret.

From the Connie Perpich letter:
“We certainly support First Amendment rights of all Americans, but do believe these comments have gone beyond the bounds of what is appropriate for any candidate for elective office.”
———————————
“We…for ANY CANDIDATE for ELECTIVE office.”
Perhaps CONNIE PERPICH will entertain a FRIENDLY AMENDMENT BY ADDITION [to her letter] to include those CURRENTLY HOLDING ELECTIVE OFFICE.
-1. Two-Putt Tommy’s Blog on MnBlue has the transcript of Vice-President Cheney’s F-bomb thrown at Senator Patrick Leahy.
-2. Governor Jesse Ventura’s book, and some of his comments while in elective office.
Many National Republican U.S Senators and U.S. Representatives will be arriving in St. Paul for the Republican National Convention (RNC) very soon.
It will be an opportune time for the signers of letters to do the kind of scrutinizing that seems to be proposed on members of the RNC ["ANY candidate for elective office"].

What? Are they going to vote for Norm in November?
Abortion is an issue for the republicans. While Al is out talking about the economy, education, health care and roads, Norm will be out scaring people that illegal immigrants are going to break into their homes and light their flags on fire while having abortions and getting married to their same-sex illegal immigrant partners.
I am confident that they PP folks will raise their stink now, and then be out raising Al Franken money a week from now. Norm has been told by Bush /Cheney/Rove that he is solidly AGAINST abortion, so I assume they won’t support him, or even choose to let their protests keep him in office.
June 5th, 2008 at 6:21 am
Yeah, those Republican Planned Parenthood people ought to stick to the REAL issues.
Even the baby killers know a potty mouthed, dirty minded Angry Al when they see it.
June 5th, 2008 at 7:12 am
Those unshaved underarm types, as Leroy notes, probably would support Franken in November.

EP
I can’t get into MNBlue since I don’t have a Google account, but did Tommy indicate what Senator Leahy was saying about the VP on the floor of the Senate. And than to tell VP that it was just politics.
June 5th, 2008 at 8:51 am
Wow, nearly all of the Democrats representing Minnesota in Washington have admonished Franken, and now even Planned Parenthood finds him objectionable… PLANNED PARENTHOOD!
When an organization who just reported “record profits” from its abortion factory admonishes you for being objectionable, that’s a problem.
All that’s left is for Larry Flynt to come out saying that the article was too much even for him.
June 5th, 2008 at 9:38 am
They Nut: Rumor has it that Larry Flynt will be making one of the nominating speeches for Angry Al this weekend! Hell of an idea, no?
June 5th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Seriously?
You just had Karl Rove in town to anoint Norm for the job, and you think Larry Flynt would be, in any way, more objectionable to the people of Minnesota?
June 5th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Leroy is right. It would be far more objectionable if a known liar and propagandist like Al Gore came to Minnesota.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:08 am
D,
You frame you questions very similar to Swiftee, no?
June 5th, 2008 at 10:11 am
I give these women credit for taking this position.
Not easy in a world of moveon.org and daily kos nuts like the ones who post here. Extreme liberal men showing the REAL position of the leftists (the men running the show) towards women in this society. The term Polichick does not equal writing a piece mearly eight years ago about robotic women providing a BJ to horny middle-aged man- this man is unfit to be a US Senator.
One can hope for the same split between anti-War forces and the true feminists that occurred in the early days. “NO WAR! BUSH LIED! Make me some coffee!!”
The first female President will be a Republican.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:17 am
pigpen,
I don’t remember right now; I’ll go back and take a look at what Two-Putt Tommy wrote.
I do remember that VP Dick Cheney did not want to apologize for dropping the F-bomb. From the transcript Cheney did not want to apologize.
What process do you use to access MDE? Perhaps someone could help you access MnBlue by using that same process.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Planned Parenthood? Notorious right-wing prudes….
June 5th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Let’s see…my choices are between the sharpest political mind of the past 25 years (Rove) or a lisping smut peddler who degrades women (Flynt). Wait a minute. Does Angry Al have a lisp? Perhaps they are one-in-the-same? At least the smut peddler who degrades women is accurate for both.
June 5th, 2008 at 11:01 am
The sharpest political mind in the past 25 years?
He is the guy that most of America credits with putting us way off on the wrong track. Don’t know if you’ve noticed but about 80 percent of America disapproves of the Rove presidency.
His sharp political mind created a quagmire in the middle east that has thrown this country deep into deficit, and done little to nothing to change the face of terrorism in this world.
His sharp political mind helped convince Dick Cheney to meet in secret with the Enrons and Exxons of the world to set energy policy that has us spending $4 a gallon on gas while Big Oil reports record profits.
His sharp political mind has allowed an amazing powergrab from the presidency where constitutional rights are now secondary to the boogeyman known as homeland security.
His sharp political mind helped lead us to the verge of a recession without using his puppet in the oval office to make any adjustments to stem the tide.
His sharp political mind did actually do one thing right, though. He quit before he was forced to see the full impact of his strategies come home to roost.

Good on Leroy. That comment was some of your best humor. Wow… Where can I obtain the full collection of your fairy tales?
June 5th, 2008 at 11:25 am
Nut: Easy answer. His copy of Chairman Mao’s (aka Howard Dean) little red book of Liberal Lies. I believe he has all the lies highlighted in pink, to match his pinko-liberal believe system.
June 5th, 2008 at 11:28 am
“…come home to roost.”
Jeremiah Wright language again. Nothing like quoting the liberal’s favorite reverend again.
Oh, and before you crow to hard about “80%” of the nation against Bush….you might just look at the numbers for the Nancy Pelosi/Harry Reid Democrat/Liberal/Commie/America Hater Congress. They are always 10 points LOWER than BUSH.
June 5th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Woa, Leroy, put another layer of tinfoil on your head.
Wow…
June 5th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Looks like Al is going to have to go to his archived “golden oldies” and resurrect a few infanticide jokes to get PP back in the fold.
