VIDEO: DFL STATE SENATOR ATTACKS MCCAIN’S SUPPORT FOR GAS-TAX HOLIDAY, CAN’T ANSWER QUESTION ABOUT OBAMA’S PLAN
By Michael B. Brodkorb | June 23, 2008
A dedicated reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed sent me this small video clip of a press conference by State Senator Kathy Saltzman and DFL Associate Chair Donna Cassutt last week to complain about Senator McCain’s support for a gas-tax holiday.
When asked about Senator Obama’s plan for solving the high gas prices, Saltzman first refused to answer the question and then admitted she didn’t know about Obama’s plan.

No politician, republican nor democrat, should call a press conference to attack any idea for which they plan to offer no alternative.
McCain’s plan for a prize to encourage development of a better fuel cell is visionary. But his plans to drill offshore, and to offer a tax holiday are little more than band aids on an already severed arm. His website does little to address this major issue. Obama, on the other hand, has some real policy initiatives on his site that set a course for independence from foreign oil through a mixture of investment in renewable fuel sources and increased CAFE standards.
Can either of these two push their whole plan through? Likely not. But I would agree that they both have more to add to the debate than Sen. Saltzman.

Leroy is a classic example of a socialist who has absolutely NO knowledge of how free markets work.
First, McCain’s multi-million dollar freebie is questionable, at best. If the technology existed, or if there were possible options on the horizon, or even a glimmer of hope, there are PLENTY of investors out there ready to sink money into this thing. With oil at $140 a barrel, there are billions and billions to be made on this and government doesn’t need to get involved.
Drilling offshore is not a “band-aid” solution. It will take quite a bit of time to explore, drill, and deliver to the market…BUT…even passing legislation that will affect future supplies will create downward pressure on the oil speculations. People…the price of a gallon of oil is based on speculation on the supplies of the FUTURE. And…if you want “independence from foreign oil”, that might sound good on a bumper sticker, but if you REALLY want that…WHAT WOULD BE BETTER THAN DRILLING RIGHT OFF OUR OWN SHORES?!?!?! LAST TIME I CHECKED, WE DON’T NEED SAUDI ARABIA TO DRILL OFF THE COAST OF FLORIDA!
The tax holiday is a quick and easy way to lower the price until the markets can stabilize. At least its better than:
Conserving your way out of this mess. How stupid are you, Leroy? At $4 per gallon, people are already changing their habits. Hey Leroy, if you really want to force people to conserve, let’s slap another $2 per gallon in tax and REALLY make people conserve. Sure…that’ll work. So stop the pipe dream of the CAFE standards doing much of anything. The problem isn’t Mister “Rich Republican” in his SUV at 20 MPG, its Mister Poor Socialist Democrat in his 1992 rusty Ford Galaxy, with no tune-up getting 12 MPG. Looking forward to the Socialist Utopia plan where we replace all the poor people’s oil belching gas guzzlers.
As for renewables, that’s just about as bad as doing nothing at all. Nuclear is the cleanest and cheapest form of power and Leroy won’t let us build nuclear plants. He wants us using MORE corn (at $7 a bushel and rising) or wind (which can’t be built without public subsity) or water (of course, now Leroy’s enviro-nazi buddies are having us remove dams because some fishy has its habitat impacted)…
Leroy, go back to your bong and leave the heavy thinking to people with more than 3 functioning brain cells. Or at least go back to meeting with the other brain dead morons, aka Obama supporters.

I can’t blame her for not having details on Obama’s non existing plan to reduce gas prices.
June 24th, 2008 at 8:10 AM
Obama can’t answer specific questions about his plan. Why should this Democrat be able to do so?
I’m surprised she just didn’t fake-sneeze: “A-change!”… the reporter would have applauded.
June 24th, 2008 at 8:15 AM
Leroy is an abject idiot, D. Thanks for the information and analysis, but you’re wasting your time with that dipshit.
Morons like Leroy have been obstructing energy exploration with the excuse that it will take 10 years to develop energy for over 30 years. It’s fools like him and the socialist bullshit they prefer that have foisted this crisis on America.
And what really pisses jackasses like Leroy, Tommy, Nancy Pelosi and Barak Obama off, is that we have $4 per gallon gasoline without a new tax. They’ve been advocating punitive taxes on consumption for years, with no purpose for the supposed revenue except to subsidize consumption by the Democrats preferred victim classes.

“Short term. . . um. . . sorts of gimmicks are. . ah. . sort of disturbing.”
Like this Press Conference for example, Senator Saltzman?
For them to hold a Press Conference to criticize a reasonable, bi-partisan plan placed into the public debate by both Senator Clinton and Senator McCain while we are facing over $4/gal. gas prices, and while the lower and middle class are having to choose not to vacation with their families this summer is. . . .
Well, kind of disturbing.

I find it interesting, after the DFL passed over the Governor’s veto, the largest tax increase in the history of Minnesota, including a huge gas tax increase, that the DFL is taking this tactic with all of the House members who voted for higher gas prices up for reelection.
DiDftL mentions families choosing not to go on vacation this summer, and he/she hits on a great point. Minnesota has a critical tourism economy that is going to be hit hard because people are choosing not to drive to tourist destinations.
Minnesotans like to camp, enjoy the great outdoors and be on the lake in the summer time, and because of high gas prices (much of which is due to taxes), many are going to opt out of those opportunities this summer.
When voters go to the polls in November after being reminded time and time again that the DFL raised the price of gas deliberately, wouldn’t it have made sense for people like Senator Saltzman to have supported Senator Clinton’s gas tax holiday plan to divert their attention from the DFL’s gas price hikes?
Now the DFL will have purposefully increased gas prices at a state level, and opposed both Senator Clinton and Senator McCain’s plans to relieve us, to a certain extent, of extremely high gas prices from a Federal perspective.
Maybe when the voters are staying home because of DFL gas price hikes, they’ll pay attention to this stuff on their TVs.

Typical liberals. Never afraid to attack somebody else’s idea, but can never back it up with their own ideas.
June 24th, 2008 at 9:18 AM
The libs do have their own idea, it’s the same one everytime ,
“TAX the rich , it’s for the chillins”

So if making changes now that won’t be felt for ten years is such a good idea, why are republicans so afraid of decreasing pollution now in an effort to reign in global warming?
June 24th, 2008 at 9:41 AM
Hell, I’m not sure why Democrats were so belligerent about raising gas taxes to pay for roads.
It’s going to be more than 10 years before any of that revenue makes a dent in the quality of our roads and transportation.
June 24th, 2008 at 9:42 AM
“why are republicans so afraid of decreasing pollution now in an effort to reign in global warming?”
First, man-made global warming is a myth. There’s very little science that supports the AGW view.
Second, there are no Republicans opposed to decreasing pollution. They’re opposed to socialism.

Saltzman looks like a buffoon…..this reminds me of that video of the texas state senator who couldn’t talk about any of Obama’s legislative accomplishments….
June 24th, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Saltzman is the kind of legislator that convinced Angry Al that he was qualified to run for US Senate; Democrat voters sporting IQ’s similar to Saltzman’s continue to feed Al’s delusion.

Leroy,
It always amuses me when you arrogant liberals think that you are somehow going to save the world be riding your bike to work.
You claim that temperatures are the highest in recorded history. But fail to mention that “recorded history” is only about 120 years or so. Compare that time span to how old the earth actually is and “recorded history” is just a blip.
Question for all the GW alarmists:
How did all the ice melt after the ice age?
Did it somehow get warmer? But how could that happen without cars and trucks?
Do you think maybe it has something to do with the sun or the fact the earth has warmed and cooled since the begining of time.
Get over yourself already.

Leroy Jenkins said:
“So if [doing something that will have a positive effect the U.S. economy] is such a good idea, why are republicans so afraid of [doing something that will have a negative effect on the U.S. economy]?”
The above is paraphrased to emphasize the stupidity of the statement. No charge.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:37 AM
Audacity,
Don’t you understand? Pollution is causing the atmosphere’s of Mars and Jupiter to warm too! Stop the greenhouse gases!!!
Some other questions:
- If we won’t get energy from more drilling for over 10 years, why was this a good excuse to block energy exploration 30 years ago?
- If drilling to deliver more supply to the market won’t resolve part of the problem, how will increasing taxes help?
- If the 10 years it may take to bring new oil to market is too long to wait, please tell me how long it will be before wind and solar make a dent in current energy needs?
June 24th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Leroy: Give back your diploma and go take an economics course.
This has everything to do with the free market, something you and your socialist buddies don’t understand.
The price of a barrel of oil is based on supply and demand today…AND…supply and demand in the FUTURE. Whether we have a new oil rig start pumping today or 5 years from now, the markets are going to react to the new supply and drive down prices.
We started this STUPID policy over a decade ago and NOW SEE WHERE WE ARE. FACE IT: the internal combustion engine is here to stay. As much as you idiots want to take us back to the stone ages.

One of the things that has gotten lost in this is that Senator Salzman is clearly utilizing the 35W bridge tragedy in a sad attempt to score political points.
Will future mishaps be Senator McCain’s fault Senator if we have a gas tax holiday?
Julie Bunn and Marsha Swails must be livid that their Senator has come out so publicly opposing a plan that apparently even Senator Clinton agreed with.
Both are very vulnerable freshman DFL legislators who supported increasing gas taxes on their constituents.
MDE, maybe you should ask Julie Bunn and Marsha Swails whether they stand with Senator Salzman or whether they stand with Senators Clinton and McCain on the issue of a temporary reprieve from these onerous gas prices.

The video is gone now. Gotta love Youtube, they’ll host jihadi videos, but will yank a DFLer looking foolish.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Leroy just curious. It’s not talked about much, but part of this drilling will uncover lots of natural gas. Do you want higher priced natural gas bills as the known natural gas fields are used up. And keep in mind one reason why natural gas is in shorter supply is that we have made natural gas electrical plants in order to avoid using coal or natural gas.
To the best of my knowledge those real solutions which you think Obama proposes doesn’t include increasing the use of coal and nuclear to stop using natural gas for electric use.
Oh I forgot you don’t realize that is part of the problem. No wonder why you don’t recognize real solutions that Mccain offers and why you think Obama offers real solutions.
