FRANKEN’S “LOYALTY” DIDN’T EXTEND TO ACCOUNTANT

By Michael B. Brodkorb | June 24, 2008

I was surprised to read in Minnesota Monthly that Al Franken’s “loyalty is legendary” and that he was devoted to his accountant:

“Barr followed Franken to Minnesota a few years ago to work on his political action committee, Midwest Values, which supported Democratic candidates. Franken’s loyalty is legendary—he’s retained his Twin Cities–based literary agents for decades and when Air America hit financial turbulence, Franken vowed to help keep his staff aloft with his own money. His personal company’s recent tax miscalculations, some have argued, stem from his long devotion to an accountant who eventually couldn’t keep up.” Source: Minnesota Monthly, June 28, 2008

Team Franken and supporters of Franken’s campaign trashed Franken’s accountant in the press.  Franken himself blamed his accountantfor “not understanding the law.” Franken’s legendary “loyalty” didn’t extend to his accountant.

Republicans may not understand this, but loyalty is not lying to protect the guilty.

If your mechanic forgets to tighten your lug nuts, and your tire falls off as you are leaving the shop, are your disloyal for mentioning the error?

This accountant, by all accounts, royally screwed up Al Franken’s taxes. If Al Franken is a good enough accountant to go over the books and find the errors, it seems rather unlikely that he would need an accountant in the first place. He hired a guy to do a job. The guy failed at the job. Al Franken placed the blame where the blame belonged.

Try as you might to change said facts, this is what happened.

“Franken vowed to help keep his staff aloft with his own money.”

That is the biggest crock of sh*t I’ve *ever* read. Franken was too busy keeping himself aloft with money filched from a children’s charity to have given a sh*t about anyone else.

The *only* reason Franken would have spread the wealth, was to spread the blame.

Al’s loyalty to both his accountant and to Scooter Barr could have been major miscalculations on his part. But both are now replaced by more competent and experienced professionals. Wish it wouldn’t have taken this long for Franken to abandon his strong sense of loyalty and replace it with some reality.. But all of the trouble should be behind him now, the rest of it will be the same old smear campaign which Minnesotans have grown accustomed to, so there isn’t really the shock value anymore.

This is not disastrous for Team Franken

what is the barr stuff? the accountant’s name that he blamed was in new york named chanzis–see mpr story on 5/2/08.

i am a cpa and what is more deceptive than anything is that franken has not had the decency to waive his privacy rights as to what advice he received from his cpa; thus, his cpa waves in the wind subjected to franke’s allegations, but not allowed to defend himself.

    typical lib justice.
