MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “BARACK OBAMA: WRONG FOR MINNESOTA GUN OWNERS”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | June 27, 2008
I received this press release yesterday afternoon.
###
“Whether it is Barack Obama’s expressed support of the D.C. gun ban, his support of a federal law to pre-empt state concealed carry legislation, or even making it a felony offense to unlawfully carry certain weapons, he is out of step with law-abiding Minnesotans who own guns. While Obama thinks Americans “cling†to guns because of bitterness, John McCain will always stand for the rights of Americans to keep and bear arms as intended by our founding fathers.†-Ron Carey, Chairman of the Republican Party of Minnesota
Obama Had Expressed Support For The D.C. Gun Ban:
Obama Campaign: “Obama Believes The D.C. Handgun Law Is Constitutional.” “[T]he campaign of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said that he ‘…believes that we can recognize and respect the rights of law-abiding gun owners and the right of local communities to enact common sense laws to combat violence and save lives. Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional.’” (James Oliphant and Michael J. Higgins, “Court To Hear Gun Case,” Chicago Tribune, 11/20/07)
During An Interview, Obama Acknowledged His Support For The D.C. Gun Ban. Questioner Leon Harris: “One other issue that’s of great importance here in the district as well is gun control. You said in Idaho recently – I’m quoting here – ‘I have no intention of taking away folks’ guns,’ but you support the D.C. handgun ban.” Obama: “Right.” (Leon Harris and Sen. Barack Obama, Forum Sponsored By ABC And Politico.Com, Washington, DC, 2/12/08)
- In The Same Interview, Obama Indicated He Feels The D.C. Gun Ban Is Constitutional. Harris: “And you’ve said that it’s constitutional. How can you reconcile those two different positions?” Obama: “Oh, because I think we have two conflicting traditions in this country. I think it is important for us to recognize that we’ve got a tradition of handgun ownership and gun ownership generally. And a lot of people, law-abiding citizens, use it for hunting, for sportsmanship, and for protecting their families. We also have violence on the streets that is a result of illegal handgun use. And so, there is nothing wrong, I think, with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets…” (Leon Harris and Sen. Barack Obama, Forum Sponsored By ABC And Politico.Com, Washington, DC, 2/12/08)
In Addition To Supporting The D.C. Gun Ban, Obama Has A Long Anti-Gun Record That Includes Telling Scholar John Lott “I Don’t Believe That People Should Be Able To Own Guns”:
Scholar John Lott Recalls Obama Stating: “I Don’t Believe That People Should Be Able To Own Guns.” John Lott: “In fact, I knew Obama during the mid-1990s, and his answers to IVI’s question on guns fit well with the Obama that I knew. Indeed, the first time I introduced myself to him he said ‘Oh, you are the gun guy.’ I responded ‘Yes, I guess so.’ He simply responded that ‘I don’t believe that people should be able to own guns.’” (John R. Lott, Jr., “Obama And Guns: Two Different Views,” Fox News, www.foxnews.com, 4/7/08)
In Response To A 1996 Independent Voters Of Illinois Questionnaire, Obama Indicated That He Supported Banning The “Manufacture, Sale And Possession Of Handguns.” Question: “Do you support state legislation to … ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns?” Obama’s Response: “Yes.” (Independent Voters Of Illinois Independent Precinct Organization 1996 General Candidate Questionnaire, Barack Obama Responses, 9/9/96)
Obama Was Director Of Anti-Gun Joyce Foundation, Which Spent Millions On Gun-Control Causes. “Adding even further skepticism to Obama’s claim of support for the 2nd Amendment is his previous service as a director of the Joyce Foundation. Since 2000, the Joyce Foundation has provided over $15 Million in funding to radical gun control organizations such as the Violence Policy Center and the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. The Joyce Foundation is tightly linked to the Soros Open Society Instit ute — an extremist group that advocates a worldwide ban on civilian firearm ownership.” (Illinois State Rifle Association, “ISRA Blasts Candidate Obama On His Record Of Hostility Toward Law-Abiding Firearm Owners,” Press Release, 8/24/04)
In 2004, Obama Voted Against Self-Defense Rights. “[Obama] opposed letting people use a self-defense argument if charged with violating local handgun bans by using weapons in their homes. The bill was a reaction to a Chicago-area man who, after shooting an intruder, was charged with a handgun violation.” (Ryan Keith “Obama Record In State Legislature Offers Possible Ammunition For Critics,” The Associated Press, 1/17/07)
In 2004, Running For U.S. Senate Obama Called For Federal Legislation To Pre-Empt State Concealed Carry Laws. “In a February survey of Democratic primary candidates for the U.S. Senate by the Tribune, Obama said he opposed allowing ordinary citizens to carry concealed weapons and that a federal law banning concealed carried weapons except for law enforcement is needed.” (Liam Ford, “Keyes Backs Law On Concealed Guns,” Chicago Tribune, 8/25/04)
On December 21, 1999, Obama Discussed The Penalties One Would Receive If Carrying A Firearm Illegally. (State Of Illinois 91st General Assembly Regular Session Senate Transcript, www.ilga.gov, 12/21/99, p. 20-23)
Obama: “Senator Emil Jones has offered – and I think this is an excellent idea that gets at the concerns that everybody on that side of the aisle has had, which is that we would create a felony offense and a misdemeanor offense, depending on the kinds of weapons you’re carrying. Basically, the provision would say that there are category one weapons: handguns, sawed-off shotguns, sawed-off rifles, other firearms that are small enough to store on their person, that to unlawfully possess and carry these weapons would be a felony; but, on the other hand, if you were going to be carrying a rifle or shotgun, a spring gun, other firearm that were used for hunting, then that would be a misdemeanor.” (State Of Illinois 91st General Assembly Regular Session Senate Transcript, www.ilga.gov, 12/21/99, p. 21)

“Guns, God, and Gays” – the Holy Trinity of the GreedOverPrinciples party.
Michael, rightwingnuts have smeared Obama’s religion; now you’re going after guns. How soon until he gets smeared as a homo?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Tommy,
“How soon until he gets smeared as a homo?”
Do you something we don’t?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Obama is a lying, flim-flam artist. Not a day goes by, it seems, where that race-baiting jackass isn’t “clarifying” or out right changing his position to fit the political wins.
Barak Obama isn’t change. Or if he is, it’s “change” that works for nobody, and “change” we can live without.
What a goddam charlatan.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Chestnut, how “right” you are! Why, if Obama flip-flopped any more than he does, he’d be just as untrustworthy as John “WaterBoard Express” McCain (a/k/a, “Bushy McSame”).
June 27th, 2008 at 10:58 AM
I own lots of guns and have no problem whatsoever with Obama’s positions on guns. None. Whatsoever. Sorry, Mikey, this is a nonstarter with reasonable people who own guns.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:01 PM
CE, who gives a shit what you think?
June 27th, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Obama was for gun control…before he was against it.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Can we waterboard “johnson”?

It is issues like gun control that will defeat Obama. If elected we will lose our 2nd amendment rights (and others…) with his first supreme court appointment. That alone is a good enough reason for me to work towards his defeat. First he will take away our guns, then other rights. I believe this was done in other facist regimes in the past.
June 27th, 2008 at 1:10 PM
Well, Chest of Nuts, since Mikey and his GOP paymasterd seem to be trying to sway Democrats who own guns, it would seem that someone cares what Democrats who own guns think. But that’s a little deep for a little boy like you isn’t it?
June 27th, 2008 at 1:15 PM
Democrats own guns?? And still back the party trying to get rid of them?? Do their mommies know??
June 27th, 2008 at 1:19 PM
“nothing wrong, I think, with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets…†Ahhh, just how did the gun ban take ILLEGAL guns off the street? Isn’t DC gun violance the highest…anywhere?
The lack of logic…wow…just wow.
June 27th, 2008 at 2:07 PM
Democrats that own guns – like me! – understand that SEVEN of NINE Justices on SCOTUS were appointed by GOPer Presidents; yet it was a 5-4 decision. Bootlickers will have a problem figuring out what that actually means.
Bootlickers will ignore what Alito said, even though he is one o’ the rightwingnut’s favorites, Alito believes gun rights can be restricted.
So, basically, what we have here is a bunch o’ bootlickers that will never be happy, biotchin’ and whinin’ ’cause they’ve been told to.
And they’ll try to make “guns” a campaign issue; they’ll fail as the electorate understands these bootlickers are only using “guns” as a wedge.
Their tricks are old. And come November, they’ll be relegated to Permanent Minority Status.
June 27th, 2008 at 2:11 PM
I seem to be having problems finding anything on this site about the latest scandal to hit Camp Coleman. I am shocked there is no coverage here.
June 27th, 2008 at 2:15 PM
I am sure nobody from Coleman’s side is here defending him because they are too busy shooting another video of Norm taking out the trash or working in the kitchen. Maybe they’ll show us the place that Norm lays his head down at night. Since the place is so small, they’ll definitely have to greenscreen that one!
June 27th, 2008 at 3:04 PM
Tommy Boy, everyone knows that two of those justices were liberals – except you apparently. I guess a buttlicker like you is to occupied to figure that out for yourself. Just the other week I heard one of Hillary’s people warning about how if McCain is elected he will appoint a conservative justice and abortion rights will be gone – I guess that is a “wedge” used by the far left buttlickers right Tommy Boy? The best thing about all of this is knowing that Obama can’t win and Angry Al is losing big time already. Obama is peaking early and has no where to go but down (kind of like the buttlicker Tommy Boy!).
June 27th, 2008 at 3:23 PM
One would think that the burden of being wrong so badly and so often would wear down on Tommy. But then again, he’s a fascist.
June 27th, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Pete, if you look at the ages of the Supreme Court Justices, you will see that all the old ones are the “liberal ones”. One Supreme Court appointment wont do it. Us Dems dream of getting rid of Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito but alas, are relatively recent appointments. It wont happen unless one of them (or Kennedy) dies or retires. This rebuttle shouldnt be confused with me not supporting the Supreme Court’s decision, I am a little on the fence but lean towards siding with their decision.
Chestnut, devils advocate, who gives a shit what you think?
And now just a general response. Gun control is an issue rarely brought up and is probably towards the bottom of issues people care about. Gun control was not an issue in 2004, it wont be now. Although, this decision could bring it back so I guess I could be wrong. We’ll just have to wait see, but if people care about gun control over the economy, the Iraq War, and our energy crisis, well then that’s pathetic.
June 27th, 2008 at 4:22 PM
Andrew, I care about gun control enough to make it one of the issues I will consider when voting this year. I also care about the economy (which I believe is closely tied to the high cost of oil) and of course the Iraq War. If one of the two parties is able to have a positive impact on the price of oil and gas they will win the white house. It is the issue that will win or lose this election.
June 27th, 2008 at 4:52 PM
Pete,
You’re an idiot and shouldn’t be voting. Obama or any other Dem is not thinking about taking away your guns. This ruling is status quo for most places. What I don’t get is why the NRA and the inbreds are happy that the SCOTUS said that we can put restrictions on gun ownership.
Registration, trainings every six months, psychological exam…This is good for us Democrats.
June 27th, 2008 at 5:13 PM
“What I don’t get is why the NRA and the inbreds are happy that the SCOTUS said that we can put restrictions on gun ownership.”
It’s because the bootlickers were TOLD to be happy.
And bein’ good little bootlickers, they do as they are told.
But, to put it in perspective, they also believe Boy Blunder is doin’ a good job.
June 27th, 2008 at 5:55 PM
TommyJohnson,
I can tell by your sharp wit and fact based arguments that you are a real intellect. Thanks for the entertainment again.
God bless the patriot in this race, Senator McCain!
June 27th, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Time for T.J. to begin a post with the word “bootlicker” in it again. With debating skills like that we just can`t win.
June 27th, 2008 at 7:49 PM
Say, jimf?
Thank you, thank you, thank you! It’s so nice of a bootlicker like you, to say something like that.
And ya can’t win; when the Lessons Of Newt “Is She Well Enough To Divorce Yet?” Gingrich are turned against the forces of evil (which everybody knows is today’s GreedOverPrinciples party), even Turdblossom can’t save those that lick the boots of Boy Blunder And The Plunderers.
But, really, “Smokescreen” and “(cheney)” will be my lasting contributions.
And I’m humbled to be able to humiliate you, here on MDE.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:54 PM
Bill Clinton and his administration incinerated children at Waco, undertook the policy of “extraordinary rendition,” used a grand jury investigation to intimidate journalists at The American Spectator, deported Elian Gonzalez to communist Cuba, and signed the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, which restricts the habeas corpus rights of American citizens.
I’m interested to hear Tommy’s outrage.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Chestnut, you’re a silly boy. When you get a grade that doesn’t include recess, you’ll discover just how silly.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:34 PM
I see Tommy the buttlicker is once again defeated by Chestnut! This is fun to watch. The idiot from the left keeps coming back for more. Never has anything to say but simply spews forth his bullshit. It is good to know that with idiots like Buttlicker Tommy in the DFL we don’t have a worry in the world! Norm is winning and McCain will be winning once people start listening to Obama and find that he doesn’t say a damn thing. Thanks for the entertainment Tommy but I believe Al just got off the crapper and needs you so crawl on over and take care of Al – you really do make a cute couple.
June 28th, 2008 at 1:47 PM
I see rePete is echoing insults others first coined. No surprise there!
Grow the (cheney) up, will ya, rePete?
June 28th, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Sorry buttlicker, didn’t know you were so sensitive. But hey at least you did one post with out saying “bottlicker”. Very good, did Al help?
June 28th, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Say, rePete?
Next time, ask your teacher to proof your rantings. If she’s busy, maybe the PlayGroundLady will help. Failing that, you can always ask your friendly ShortBusDriver.
Next year, er, ‘scuse me, “next grade” (you been in this one, what – 3 years now? 4?), maybe they’ll teach ya how to spell-check….
June 28th, 2008 at 8:54 PM
Wow Tommy, you are good. Impressive. What next, the old I’m rubber and you’re glue response? Hey, another post without “bootlicker” in it! Not bad for an old buttlicker like you son. Hey, did you hear? The US Constitution disagrees with the Democrat party. We can own hand guns! They can’t be banded! I guess they will need to figure out another way to force their will on the American people. Now we just need to make sure that McCain gets elected so that we don’t have to worry about Obama appointing Bill or Hillary to the Supreme Court!

You keep repeating that like it helps your “argument” in some way. It doesn’t, and it makes you appear dull. Perhaps it is not only an appearance, but if it there is some meat to this argument then please reveal it.
Obama is seen as a danger to gun ownership because:

Just because you are one of the folks he termed as “bitter” and that you “cling” to your guns for respite apparently doesn’t make you very interested in BHO’s opinions and history on the subject of gun law. Another check for you in the “dull” category. :-/
June 29th, 2008 at 9:40 PM
“Obama is seen as a danger to gun ownership because:…”
…because bootlickers don’t pay attention.
The fact of the matter is the misAdministration of Bush The Lesser believes they can not only take your guns, they can take you, your wife, your kids, your guns, and any other property they want, and YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO CHALLENGE THE GOVERNMENT’S ACTIONS IN COURT.
NONE.
You bootlickers are missing the point.
No surprise there.
