COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE PRESS RELEASE: “COLEMAN CHALLENGES AL FRANKEN’S CHANGING POSITIONS ON IMPORTANT ENERGY ISSUES”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 3, 2008
Saint Paul—Today Senator Norm Coleman held a press conference at the State Capitol to address Al Franken’s recent doublespeak on key energy issues. Yesterday, as cited in multiple news accounts, Al Franken attempted to change his position on the issues of domestic drilling, keeping a federal gas tax on the table, and the viability of increased nuclear energy sources. Norm Coleman, however, has steadfastly opposed an increase in gas taxes, supports expanded deepwater offshore drilling to boost supply, and has been a steadfast champion of expanding renewable, clean-coal and nuclear energy.
“Yesterday, I traveled around the State of Minnesota visiting the people of this state, and hearing their concerns about gas prices, about energy and their concern that our nation’s liberty and freedom is being held hostage by foreign oil and energy resources,†said Coleman. “Yesterday, my opponent said that he doesn’t believe that the rising price of gas or energy is the number one issue of concern on the minds of Minnesotans. I’m not sure what state Al Franken is running for Senate in, but if it’s Minnesota, he might want to take a look at the gas pump.
“To be blunt, Al Franken is out of touch on this issue and even more out of touch on the solutions to this problem. Al Franken has shown a deliberately confusing array of positions on energy issues, beginning on June 18th when he said on WCCO that he didn’t believe drilling was the solution to our nation’s energy challenges. Nine days later, Franken’s position shifted and then six days later it shifted again when Al admitted he really doesn’t support expanded drilling.
“Al Franken’s lack of candor about his position on raising gas taxes also reflects a pattern of his throughout the campaign. Nearly a year ago, Al Franken supported, and still does, a ten cent a gallon state gas tax increase. At the same time, he also indicated he believed that keeping a federal gas tax increase on the table was part of his energy strategy. Then on June 30th his campaign website proclaimed that as a result of $4 gas, Al Franken was taking the federal gas tax off the table. That lasted until yesterday, three days later, when he put it right back on the table.
“On the major issue of the day, Al Franken is simply wrong on all counts. His rapidly confusing positions on energy bring him right back to where he was at the beginning of this debate- he has no plan, he has no vision, and he is simply wrong.â€Â

Dear Oil Sheep,
We could eliminate all environmental regulations and open up every inch of ocean and land. The oil companies won’t drill.
The oil companies like 4 dollar gas, and they like 5 or 6 dollar gas even more! Drilling costs money, and would lower the price, which would both hurt profit. They won’t do it.
Building refineries costs money and would lower the price. The oil companies are the ones who are most against new refineries. It affects their profits.
Deep sea drilling vessels are booked up for the next 3 years, so they couldn’t even drill anyway. And guess what, they won’t build more drill vessels because, you guessed it, it costs money and reduces profits.
This is the typical sleight of hand game you guys fall for every time. While the corporatists and their Republican surrogates rape Americans, they distract you with “It’s the Democrats”.
The oil companies already have drilled wells in Alaska with reserves bigger than ANWR, and they capped them!
Couple obvious questions: Do you think Exxon likes making huge profits?
Do you honestly think Exxon or any other company, big or small, would jeopardize their record profits?
Do you honestly think that Bush/Cheney, oilmen both, care if you pay $10 a gallon?
I’ll answer that one. They do care. They love it, and so does McCain. The Republicans will never do anything to get in the way of oil profits, and they will use Democrats as scapegoats to distract guys like you from the real culprits. If you think the major oil companies give a rat’s ass what happens to America, you are sad and naive.
And Dems, our talking points should not be “save the environment” because we’ll never win that argument. We need to focus the blame consistantly and often back on the real crimminals, the oil companies. Even given the opportunity, they do not crrently and will not in the future increase supply.

Shell is scheduled to drill off the coast near one of my favorite places soon. I’ll have to check my sources.

The oil companies have 30 million acres of ocean area with permits already secured to drill. There are no regulations in the way. They have the leases and the permits. There is oil there else they wouldn’t bother getting the drill permits. So, there is nothing stopping them from drilling tomorrow. Oh, except anti-American Fascism.
If we open up more land and ocean, they will secure leases and permits. And they will sit on that oil while they make 5 -10 dollars a gallon. After the current supply runs out, then they might start drilling, in 20-30 years!

That’s a pretty coherent, but misinformed comment there Alec. Congrats. You’re a grade-a lib-tard.

Kyle,
Dispute or discuss rationally any of the statements. Typical turd blossom. Attack the person when you cannot refute the evidence.
Gentlemen like you are compliant with outrageous gas, it is sad. Don’t you get that if you make less than $150,000 a year the Repubs don’t care about your quality of life? They just use you to get votes by reframing the arguments and distracting you against their using you as cheap pawns.
Please discuss point by point where I was wrong,.
Thanks,
Alec

What evidence Alec. Your silly rambling about dubious conspiracy theories. Puh-leazzzzzzzze.
Source your crap from something other than deranged lib-tard groups.

Here, I’ll help retard:
“Building refineries costs money and would lower the price. The oil companies are the ones who are most against new refineries.”
Source it. While you’re researching, you’ll find the Democrat-driven restrictions on expanding refining capacity.
“Deep sea drilling vessels are booked up for the next 3 years, so they couldn’t even drill anyway.”
Source it.
“This is the typical sleight of hand game you guys fall for every time. While the corporatists and their Republican surrogates rape Americans, they distract you with “It’s the Democratsâ€.”
Wow… do you have tin foil bracelets to go with that hat? I hear it’s all the fascist fashion rage!
“The oil companies already have drilled wells in Alaska with reserves bigger than ANWR, and they capped them!”
Source it.
Seriously Alec, you’re rant carries all the credibility of an insane chicken farmer drooling over the UFO he saw.
Have a nice weekend. You and and the voices in your head should carry on quite a conversation.

More:
“The oil companies have 30 million acres of ocean area with permits already secured to drill.”
Source it.
“There are no regulations in the way.”
Except the legislative and administrative bans on drilling, I suppose you’re right.
You’re a drooling idiot Alec. Go back to your dreams of the totalitarian future you and your asshole buddies look forward to. Say hi to Castro for me.

Kyle,
Drectly from the Energy Information Administration:
“EIA estimates that if Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge were opened for drilling tomorrow, oil wouldn’t flow at full tilt until 2025.”
Not the quick fix the corporatists and their Republican surrogates make you believe.
http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/30/news/economy/oil_drilling/index.htm?postversion=2008053011
By 2025, most NonOPEC countries will have run out, thus mitigating any gain by pumping oil in ANWR, and not helping the price much at all. Again, from the same article.
–There are 5,174,000,000 barrels non-producing proved crude oil reserves in the United States that could be drilled tomorrow. These are places oil companies already have access to, both on shore and off. This is from the Energy Information Administration. It is straight facts.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/natural_gas/data_publications/crude_oil_natural_gas_reserves/current/pdf/ch3.pdf#page=2
5 billion barrels in non-production. Not because Dems are not allowing it, but just because the oil companies don’t want to drill. 5 billion! PAge 7 of the above cited report.

What Alec,
You so defeated that you have to change the subject. I’ll take that as a confirmation that you were talking out of your ass and that you know so.
I could give a shit less when oil starts flowing. What was the excuse in 1995? What was the excuse in 2002?
BTW — that has nothing to do with the idiotic crap you spouted earlier, for which I demanded a source.
On another note, during what year can we expect the Democrat plan to “do nothing” to deliver increased energy supplies? During what year will raising taxes, deliver new sources of energy. During what year will windmills, solar panels and fairy dust replace our current sources of energy?
How long will it take for the Democrat’s plan — which is to do nothing — to contribute to a solution?
You’re pathetic, Alec. But here’s a clue: next time to refer to a source in support of your bullshit, at least refer to a source that supports your bullshit conclusions.
Anyone as fully ignorant and mis-informed as you are has now business engaging in the debate. You don’t even have the intellectual capacity to follow the conversation… and you’re so intellectually dishonest it doesn’t matter.
Dumb.
