MDE EXCLUSIVE: FRANKEN’S MIDWEST VALUES PAC FINED $7,200 BY FEC; FINE KEPT QUIET BY TEAM FRANKEN

    By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 8, 2008

Yesterday, I posted that some Democrats are wondering if Team Franken is attempting to hold the additional shoes from dropping until after the July 15th filing deadline closes to avoid giving potential opponents another reason to enter the race

Unfortunately for Team Franken, the failure of Franken to pay his taxes in 18 states in five years (perhaps more states for more years), his failure to pay payroll taxes, his failure to provide workers’ compensation and disability insurance for his corporation’s employees, and his failure to pay a $25,000 workers’ compensation fine are being joined by a new legal lapse by Franken.

According to public information from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and confirmed with FEC staff last evening, Al Franken’s Midwest Values PAC was fined $7,200 last year for failing to file the legally required disclosure reports.

Specifically, Franken’s PAC failed to file their Post General Report, covering the period of October 19, 2006 to November 27, 2006. Franken’s PAC paid the fine on October 17, 2007, over eight months after he announced he was running for the U.S. Senate. The fine has been kept quiet by Team Franken as their candidate’s pattern of questionable business practices, tax and workers compensation violations and court ordered fines pile up around them.

The FEC formally announced that Franken’s Midwest Values PAC had been fined for “Improper Reporting” earlier this year. While the FEC’s press release cited 23 other committees that had also been fined, Franken’s PAC was the fined the largest amount.

Like with all of Franken’s legal problems, I’m sure that someone else will be to blame for the failure of Franken’s PAC to file their legally required disclosure forms.  In the end, Franken’s PAC being fined adds another layer to Franken’s ethical problems in both business and his campaign operation.

Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for more information on this developing story.

So all the while while the Franken camp was saying “no, seriously this time, we’ve cleared up all of our tax obligations in all 17 states” (setting aside that now we learn it is at least 18), Franken’s campaign was concealing the fact that a huge fine had been leveled against his PAC!

They knew the whole time and they concealed it!!!

At first this scandal, in total, may have seemed like it was about misfilings in a few states.

It then grew to gross incompetence and irresponsibility because of the large number of states, and a question of his ability to serve.

Then it became a serious question of ethics and trust as everytime Franken said he was coming clear with the people, we learned there was another state where he didn’t pay taxes.

Now, after all that, we learn that the entire time he was sitting on the fact that his PAC was fined, just hoping we’d never find out?

Midwest Values my ass. Franken has looked into the eyes of the Minnesota voter and lied.

And the whole time he was lying, he was hiding another huge scandal, hoping he wouldn’t have to make something up to “come clean” on this one too.

      Well, busted.

      Nice work MDE.

Hey Franken, remember when you are thinking about lying again to get out of this one, that MDE probably already has the evidence written out.

Keep that in the back of your mind when lying to reporters today.

OK, if this is such a big deal, why isn’t the main-stream media picking this up and running with it? If this were Coleman’s problem I can’t believe that the Strib and MPR wouldn’t be all over it. What is goint on here?

Can we have a new candidate now????????

Also, Michael, I’m glad you’ve decided to proceed with hammering Franken before the 15th. Maybe you haven’t thought this one through or maybe you actually want a good election with a different DFL candidate. Either way, keep it up!

    5. Swiftee Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 9:18 am

Is there anything that Franken can do correctly other than write pornographic fantasies?

It is no exaggeration to say that everything Angry Al touches turns to crap. But I guess the Democrat party figured it had nothing to lose on that score…

    6. TommyJohnson Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 9:27 am

So, when is republiCon Ron going to hold a Press Farce, er, ’scuse me, “Press Conference”, where (in a loud, whiny voice) he proclaims:

“I, personally, hold Al Franken to a higher standard than I, personally, have managed to attain. And it is imperative that Minnesotans hold Al Franken to a higher standard than they hold candidates belonging to the republiCon Party of Minnesota, the most incompetent state political party in the country.”

    7. Kyle Christensen Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 9:36 am

What are you saying, Tommy. That the Democrats can’t do any better than the lowest rung on the ladder as defined by your opinion of the GOP?

That’s a pretty sad statement, even for somebody who justifies his entire existence by what others do.

Good thing is we don’t look to you or your ilk for examples of integrity.

    8. Michael B. Brodkorb Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 9:38 am

Tommy: How about you comment specifically on my post? Any response yet from Team Franken?

    9. TommyJohnson Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 9:38 am

Kyle, you have NO integerity. Nor honor. NONE.

What I’m saying is trotting out republiCon Ron to criticize ANYONE’S paperwork is HYPOCRISY.

Then again, it is the GreedOverPrinciples party, that republiCon Ron is the “standard” bearer of…

Michael, I don’t communicate with Team Franken very often; and I’m not on their e-mail distribution list.

As far as your post, you seem to be claiming that Franken shouldn’t be elected because of all his problems; if that is correct, no republican should be elected because of all the republican party of minnesota’s problems.

If you’re proving Franken is incompetent, you are also proving the entire GOP is incompetent.

Franken got fined $7,200? Carey got the party fined $16,000.

Why you persist in throwing stones from your glass house only shows that GOP clearly stands for GreedOverPrinciples.

I’ll make this simple! If you want to keep attacking Ron Carey for what he did than you have to attack everyone who does campaign finance reporting violations. One person who we learned today is Al Franken! So why don’t you attack Franken the same that you attack Carey.

This just shows you’re the typical Republicans are evil and Democrats do nothing wrong person.

That is rich, coming as it does from a guy who lies about his military service and is the laughingstock of the VFW.

But you go with it “johnson”, it looks good on you.

The Democrat party cannot come up with a better candidate than proven liar Angry Al, and Angry Al cannot come up with a better mouthpiece than proven liar Tommy “johnson” Johnson….pathetic….no, really.

Oh, I guess I didn’t see anything about Ron Carey in Michael’s post… probably because it’s not there.

What’s the deal Tommy, why do you have such a hard-on for Ron Carey? And why are you so obsessed with changing the subject?

And seriously, you want to go after the GOP? The DNC is taking money from Katrina relief to hold its convention later this summer. Nancy Pelosi has been caught aiding terrorists in Columbia (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121538827377131117.html?mod=todays_columnists), the Democrat party disenfranchised millions of voters in its primary, and has over half-dozen elected members indicted and under investigation for taking bribes.

Gimme a break. BTW — I thought you were the guy complaining about “guilt by association” tactics not that long ago…

The MDE post applies directly to the behavior, incompetents and ethical lapses of AL FRANKEN, CANDIDATE… not his party.

“johnson” is just a fat little loser with nothing better to do than sit in his mothers basement and make an ass of himself every day from dawn to dusk…it’s pathetic.

How long will these revelations have to continue before the Minnesota Democrat party throws in the towel for this year, just to save a morsel of it’s crumbled respectability?

You know, it won’t be long before the DFL faithful start claiming that Angry Al is really a Republican mole sent in to destroy their party.

    22. Swiftee Says:

BTW, I’ll be handing out excerpts of Angry Al’s scholarly essay “Porn-O-Rama” at the state fair this year.

    24. PlymouthDem Says:

How can it be a “new” legal problem when it was announced publicly almost 5 months ago, paid almost 8 months ago, and occurred almost 2 years ago? And, why would Franken’s camp need to say anything about it if there is a PUBLIC press release announcing it.

What, was it not public knowledge until MDE confirmed with the FEC last night?

This is about the worst claim of a cover-up ever.

    25. TommyJohnson Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 10:55 am

Kyle, the fact you don’t see the hypocrisy of Michael Brodkorb, who was Ron Carey’s campaign manager, criticizing Al Franken for a FEC Fine, when Ron Carey got fined by the FEC for more than DOUBLE (and, not adjusted for inflation!) that, only goes to show you’re a good little bootlicker.

My take on this is: Carey was responsible for some paperwork that got filed late; the FEC fined the MnGOP; no big deal. Franken’s PAC filed some paperwork late; the FEC fined ‘em; no big deal.

But, here’s what you bootlickers are falling for:

“Carey was responsible for some paperwork that got filed late; the FEC fined the MnGOP; no big deal. However, Franken’s PAC filed some paperwork late; the FEC fined ‘em; and it’s a Big (cheney)in’ Deal.”

And that’s why you’re a bootlicker; you swallowed that line of bullshit.

      TommyJohnson said:

“If you want to keep attacking Al Franken for what he did than you have to attack everyone who does campaign finance reporting violations.”

Untrue. The reason Al Franken gets more press for his transgressions is because he is trying to represent Minnesota in the U.S. Senate.

Many Minnesotans think we can do better than Franken. Heck, many DFLers think we can do better than Franken.

    27. Swiftee Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:00 am

Al Franken’s parents thought they could do better than Al Franken.

    28. walter hanson Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:00 am

      Tommy:

      There are three major differences.

One, in order to defend Al Franken you keep mentioning Ron Carey. Last time I looked Norm Coleman was running against Al Franken. Saying Franken is alright because this person did something worse is no defense. However if you want to compare the evidence here 19 state or reporting agencies violations for Franken versus one for Carey. About $85,000 in taxes or penalaties versus $16,000 for Carey. Seems like Al is the naughtier boy.

Two, if Carey was running for a public office which he isn’t I will say it was fair game to raise the issue. However if he was it will hurt him. It could also hurt him the next time the Republicans elect their state party leadership.

Three, I think I have said some bad things about Republicans. Mind you I have done it in the form of letters to that particular Republican. So excuse me your twisting the shoe doesn’t fit.

You’re still a person who thinks that Republicans are evil and Democrats do nothing wrong.

      Walter Hanson
      Minneapolis, MN

    29. TommyJohnson Says:

      TommyJohnson said:

“If you want to keep attacking Al Franken for what he did than you have to attack everyone who does campaign finance reporting violations.”

True. The reason Ron Cary deserves more press coverage is Ron Carey’s transgressions is representive of how the Republican Party of Minnesota actually performs it’s duties and because Ron Carey the public face of all that the GOP is supposed to represent.

And what Ron Carey represents is “while us republiCons talk a good game, we don’t want to be held accountable when the score is tallied.”

Which, of course, is but one more reason why GOP now stands for GreedOverPrinciples.

    30. Kyle Christensen Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:18 am

“…the fact you don’t see the hypocrisy of Michael Brodkorb, who was Ron Carey’s campaign manager…”

Oh, so it’s not the GOP or Ron Carey now. It’s Michael who is a former employee of Ron and the GOP… so, you’ve extended your line of association.

So, basically all bets are off. Anyone one within 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon can no longer win an Academy Award.

That will shorten the ceremony significantly.

    31. TommyJohnson Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:25 am

Kyle, you’re such a simple bootlicker.

Fortunately, for America, you’re a member of the soon-to-be Permanent Minority Status party.

    32. Kyle Christensen Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:30 am

Ya see Tomm, hypocrisy is when you say one thing and then do another, not when you say one thing and somebody you once worked for does another.

At least now I know why you disagreed with my comment last week that you don’t really care about hypocrisy. It’s because you don’t know what hypocrisy is.

For example, you’re a major hypocrite when you say “I want to talk about the issues”… and then change the subject to Ron Carey, call everyone insulting names, and libel everyone you disagree with.

      Your not only a hypocrite, Tommy. You’re a bald-faced liar, a cheat and a fool…

    33. walter hanson Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:30 am

      Tommy:

to use your logic than any Democrat who wants to say that Al Franken deserves to be a US Senator endorses bad jokes of woman being raped (that might help explain your sick mind), endorses insulting people (oh wait a minute you already do that), and still endorse the concepts that rules don’t matter if it’s a democrat.

Last time I looked Franken was a candidate in an important Senate race while Ron Carey wasn’t running for office. Given the situation the person who deserves more attention is Al Franken. Especially given his lack of character
is demonstrated by this and his language issues.

If you want to talk about unaccountable why is it that Democrats want to be measured for their intentions not their results. The great society programs destroyed the black colture, but the Republicans gets called racists by the Democrats. The welfare reform program of 1996 was called racist helped repair some of that damage. Do I need to go on?

Why should you expect a corporation to obey rules when the Democrats who pass the laws don’t care about obeying them?

Walter, last time I looked Ron Carey was helping GOP candidates get elected.

And since republiCon Ron is the highest GOP Party Official, he’s the official face of the GOP Party.

    37. Dumbing it Down For the Left Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:57 am

It is a much bigger deal, Tommy, than just the comparison you are trying to make to deflect from the real issue.

Franken having violated campaign finance laws is certainly something that should be taken into consideration, but in and of itself is obviously not a deal breaker for the voters.

      The actual issues are these:

      1) The vastness of his propensity to violate the law. 17 (I mean at least 18) states where he didn’t pay taxes. This campaign finance violation. The Worker’s Comp. Etc.

      And bigger yet

      2) Franken has lied to the people’s face time after time after time after time after time for several months now.

Every time Franken tells us he’s coming clean, a new revelation comes out.

He knew while state after state where he has avoided taxes was laid out for the public that he had this fine for violating campaign finance laws. He tried to hide it, going so far as to fail to properly disclose it.

And setting aside all of the intricacies of FEC Regs (which are arguably onerous and damaging to public discourse) he should have disclosed this to the public as a matter of common decency.

He expects the voters to trust him in office to be an advocate or opponent of public policy that can have a profound effect on the livelihoods of people. That trust is not something to be taken lightly.

So when he lies time after time after time, it becomes a big deal.

So don’t trivialize this with your small minded deflections Tommy.

The actual scandal has nothing to do with the FEC violation, and you know it.

I just wonder if the press will let Franken get away with playing them the way he has.

    38. Kyle Christensen Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 11:58 am

Hey, speaking of hypocrisy, Tommy comes here to libel, insult and act like the fascist he is about Michael’s posts about Al Franken’s law breaking, tax cheating and ethical failures

Funny, for a guy who’s “so concerned” about hypocrisy, Tommy’s MNBlue blog doesn’t contain a word about Al Franken’s law breaking, tax cheating and ethical failures… One would think if he cared about hypocrisy Tommy would cover both sides…

GASP!!! You mean, just like republiCon Ron??!?

Let’s look at republiCon Ron’s problem, as aired by GOP Employees:

June 3, 2007: Internal complaints roil state GOP office
Staff members who asked the leadership to address questions of how money was used say they were ignored or faced retaliation.

By Dan Browning and Pat Doyle, Star Tribune

      Last update: July 16, 2007 – 5:32 PM

At least two staff members have left the Minnesota Republican Party since February after they complained that the party misused employee retirement money, improperly reported its finances and ignored or retaliated against staff who reported the problems.

Carey on Friday denied any retaliation and said any problems identified in the memo have been fixed.

      more, here: Star Tribune

Say, Kyle? They haven’t been fixed. That makes republiCon Ron a liar, doesn’t it?

      Hey Tommy:

Just curious why do you have to be invited to visit your blog? Mike opens the blogs with no special signs. Looks like Mike is a far better blogger than you are.

To be honest Tommy if you haven’t heard there are a lot of Republicans who aren’t happy with how the Republican Party has been run. That could be an issue when the party decides if Carey retains his job. Last time I looked both Tim Pawlenty and John Mccain thought they were the offical voice of Republican ideas in Minnesota not Ron Carey.

But that aside because the DFL has endorsed Al Franken he is the spokes person for their beliefs. He speaks for Betty M, Walz, Madia, and your state house candidates. Wow all those people endorse women being raped! And they support crooks to since Franken is a crook since he did the same crime as Carey. Not to mention multiple time.

Walter, the fact you think Al Franken speaks for Betty, demonstrates how out of touch with reality you really are.

Franken isn’t the face of the DFL; Melendez is.

Coleman isn’t the face of the GOP; Carey is.

      Get a grip, Walter.

    42. Troy Says:

TommyJohnson, the “somebody else did it first” tape loop you like to play really isn’t a argument.

    43. TommyJohnson Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Troy, you – as usual – miss the point.

I’m not saying “it’s ok for franken ’cause carey did it first”; I’m saying you guys are (cheney)in’ hypocrites for condemning Franken for what Carey did before.

Wrong is wrong no matter who does it; you bootlickers think it’s only wrong when a democrat does it and you’re perfectly fine with ignoring republiCon transgressions while throwing your stones.

You’re a hypocrite, Troy. Always have been; always will be.

And come November’s elections, you’ll be a member of the Permanent Minority Status party.

    44. surly Says:
      July 8th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

“MY TAKE on this is: Carey was responsible for some paperwork that got filed late; the FEC fined the MnGOP; NO BIG DEAL.”

So the person who’s stock answer to nearly every post/question/response over the last few months has been to hyperventilate, “Ron Cary! GOP fines!!! Crooks! RepubliCons!!!” has now admitted that it was all a put-on. Manufactured indignation meant to do nothing but provoke.

The classic definition of a troll.

      That’s pretty funny.

    51. TommyJohnson Says:

A PAC started by Al Franken screwed up paperwork, and paid a fine for it. This happens ALL THE TIME, with both democrats and republicans.

If memory serves, the single largest fine in state campaign finance board history is held by Tim Pawlenty. And he was subsequently re-elected, without any call from the right for him to step aside.

I guess I have to agree with Tommy on this one. If you fail to pass judgment on the candidates you agree with, you lose the right to do so with the candidate with whom you disagree.

Do the left-leaners here not see what the real issue is? It’s not the fact that he only filed late, or failed to file, ONCE. It’s not that he did it TWICE. He has a pattern of these issues, most of which were (he thought) swept under the rug and LIED about until Michael peeked under said rug and outed him and his campaign finances.
Ironic, isn’t it, that Angry Al is so damned proud of his book entitled ‘Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them’? Here it turns out it was a autobiography all along!

An excellent question, surly, but I suspect we will get treated to another expedition into TommyJohnson’s “real issue” (or issues) and more more name calling because we aren’t focused on someone who is NOT running for the U.S. Senate.

      President?

      House?

He isn’t the face of the DFL party until he runs for office. To use that logic Paul Wellstone wasn’t the person who spoke for the DFL and their ideas. What an insult to the great Paul Wellstone! Since Wellstone is in heaven and you seem to be going the other direction he won’t get a chance to try to correct that stupid thinking.

You say that Norm Coleman is trying to use Ron Carey as a shield. Last time I looked Tommy Norm when he holds a press conference doesn’t have Ron Carey with him just like Al doesn’t have this Mel character running around with him.

No matter how you spin it Tommy Boy Al by your own standards is a crook who doesn’t deserve a vote for US Senate. It looks like if you’re going to be honest with what you’re preaching you’re voting for the Independence Party or the Green party’s candidate for US Senate since Tommy Johnson doesn’t support crooks.
