MDE FROM THE ARCHIVES: FRANKEN THINKS JOKING ABOUT CALLING SENATOR CLINTON A “B****” IS FUNNY

By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 11, 2008

On the heels of Team Franken’s announcement of Women for Franken, I thought I’d remind people of how Franken thinks a joke about calling out Senator Clinton as a “bitch” is funny.

This is from Franken appearance on “Crossfire” on April 1, 2004.

CARLSON: Al Franken, thanks for joining us.

Like all good liberals I spent a good part of my day listening to your show, “The O’Franken Factor.” And I want to read back to you an exchange that took place between you and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

This is your pretty hard-hitting question. You said, quote, “Senator, you went to Iraq and Afghanistan right after Thanksgiving, right?”

“During Thanksgiving,” said Mrs. Clinton.

Quote from you, “Tell us about that a bit.”

Now here’s my question. You’re not simply liberal, but you’re a partisan Democrat. Doesn’t an exchange like this give people the impression that you’re not going to be tough on Democrats, that you’re essentially part of the establishment? That you’re playing for a team and not for an idea? And isn’t the result boring?

FRANKEN: I think that you took that out of context, because I said, I think you would have liked this better, because I think you left out, I said “Tell us a little bit about that, bitch.”

And you just are — you’re just taking it out of context.

I’m sure Team Franken will label this as satire.

P.S. Every time I try to comment on this site I get a ton of errors.

Michael. For the final time. Please leave Franken alone until the deadline for new candidates has passed. You should be very concerned that Al Franken is going to drop out of this race.

Michael. For the final time. Please hammer Franken before the deadline. You should be trying to get more candidates into the race for a diversity of voices.

Can you please post the complete transcript from the Al Franken show?

Gee – after the sliming the republiCons did on Senator Clinton, bitch is a little mild.

Tommy boy, what did the Republicans do to Senator Clinton?

    Ask El Druggo, rePete.

The joke itself is funny. But calling Clinton a bitch, I’ve certainly done it when she pissed me off but then I had to step back and realize it is the most un-feministic term, unless someone is actually being a bitch. Calling Clinton a bitch only plays into why Republicans hate her, they are subconciously sexist towards her and people like Franken and I accidently contribute to that. I’m just lucky I’ve done it in the comfort of my home and not on the radio…

I wonder what Jesse Jackson has called Senator Clinton in privy. I wonder if he also had made any plans to do something to Hillary as he did with Barrack Obama.

It’s revealing how quick he was to jokingly refer to Hillary as a bitch; he’s very quick to equate woman with bitch – that’s what I get out of this. The DFL elite sure chose a doozy (once again). The joke’s on them!
