you have totally ignored the fact that mn state income taxes are higher than federal taxes on low income familes. families of 4 earning $40k or less pay no federal income tax while they pay 2-3% mn income taxes.

further, just fyi, assuming you believe obama that he wants to repeal the “bush” tax cuts, the families of 4 that i referenced above will now pay $2k in taxes because part of the “bush” tax cuts was the child credit which is $1k per kid. and just so you don’t think that is weighted in favor of the rich, the child credit (along with college tuition credits–another “bush” tax credit that will disappear if obama does what he says) is phased out for families making more than $125k.

i would support obama increasing the thresholds (say those making $250k) for when child/tuition/child care credits phaseout, but that is not what he has said.

Your argument relied upon a flawed statistical analysis. Saying the top 50 or so percent of the population pays the vast majority of DOLLARS into the tax system is like saying the sky is blue. Duh. They also make a crap load more money. Nor does that statement mean the bottom 50% don’t pay money into the system.

What’s key is the proportion to income. Lower and middle class experience a significantly higher burden in relative (and often actual) tax to income proportion.

There is significantly more work that can be done within the tax system to equalize the discrepancy in actual tax burden experienced by the lower and middle classes vs. the upper class.

This is such a stupid statistic. Have you stopped to contemplate why this might be? Let’s start with the fact that almost a quarter of the nation’s income is earned by the top ONE percent of the population. So, even if the tax rates were completely even, 1% of the population SHOULD be paying almost a quarter of the taxes.

Now let’s look at the other side of the statistical distribution. The bottom 50% of the population only make about 10% of the income. Considering that a large chunk of these people make NO income (elderly, disabled, unemployed, etc.) it’s not exactly shocking that their proportion comes in well below 10%. More importantly, the 50% of people you are harping about are making `40k, and most of them are distributed in high COL areas (coasts). The proportional burden on those individuals of taxes is SIGNIFICANTLY different than the burden on someone making 100s of thousand given the vastly lower (often completely absent) amount of discretionary income.

1. 97% of the income taxes are paid by those in the upper 50% income brackets; thus, the “poor” pay little, if any, income taxes so you can’t reduce something below zero.
2. according to ted kennedy only the rich received tax breaks from bush tax cuts; thus, since individuals making $28,000+ received tax cuts/higher tax credits, the rich according to the dems are those people making more than $28,000.
3. a family of 4 can make approx. $40,000 and pay no federal income tax–now ask your mn state legislator what they would pay in mn income taxes? the answer may surprise you, but i will give you a hint: it is more than $1,000, depending on itemized deductions.
