FRANKEN’S VICIOUS USE OF THE “N” WORD

    By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 22, 2008

Yesterday, after reading a posting on the new blog, Facts Are Stubborn Things, I learned about Al Franken’s use of the “n” word. Now, I’m not writing the racially disgusting word on my blog, but we all know what word I am talking about.

This is from page 157 of the paperback of “Lies And the Lying Liars who Tell Them,” where Franken imagines a conversation between lobbyist Mac Stipanovich and then Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris during the 2000 Florida Recount.

“Florida.  November.  A forty-three year old woman named Katherine Harris paced back and forth on a colorless carpet in an office that smelled of sweaty seersucker and day-old perfume.  Nearby, a trim, goateed man was fanning himself lazily with a Panama hat while lying on the couch.  ‘I swear, Katherine, I’m sweating like a n***** on Election Day. Can’t we crank up the AC in here?’

‘Just tell me what to, Mac.  Just tell me what to do.’” (Al Franken, Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them, p. 157, 2003)

I am sure that Team Franken’s going to have all sorts of excuses for Franken using this word – I am sure the couple million dollars he made from the book is going to be a part of it.

Please click on the play button to hear Franken use the “n” word at :21 of the audio file. I want to warn people that Franken actually says the “n” word in the audio file.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

After listening to audio, please leave a comment.

UPDATE: Please note that I am keeping this post at the top of Minnesota Democrats Exposed for the next few hours.

This is obviously a sensitive topic, so I’m glad you handled it so diplomatically and sensitively.

Utilizing such a highly charged word so cavalierly, as Franken has here, opens up a whole new set of questions about his demeanor and ability to serve.

African American leaders from all across the political spectrum have pleaded for the word not to be used. Whether it is by some racist redneck, or an African American rapper, the argument is that the word’s continued use sours race relations and slows the great progress that has been made on racial issues.

I don’t know Franken to judge whether he is closer to the racist redneck or the rapper. I’m sure that will be debated right here on this blog.

But either way, this is another reason Minnesotans should exercise caution when considering a vote for Al Franken.

Especially when there are options out there for those who oppose Senator Coleman, such as Lord Farris, Dean Barkley and Jack Uldrich.

Mikey: So I guess you’ll be crying out against Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn any time now, you know, the guy on the cover of Time magazine.

It’s funny that we hear this cry from a typical white male like yourself instead of an African American group, oh, say when the book was released. Oh, right, the scene is fiction. No one would care, but you.

    3. Leroy Jenkins Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 pm

I too am glad you handled it diplomatically and sensitively.

Not everyone who reads this will be able to understand the gulf of difference between someone who satirically mocks the Secretary of State in Flordia for suppressing the black vote, and the Secretary of State herself who was rewarded by the republican party machine in Florida for her efforts to suppress the black vote with a seat in congress.

Words are words. Actions speak much louder. On this issue, the republicans in Minnesota are apparently interested in taking a victory lap on their efforts to disenfranchise the minority vote while pretending to be offended by what Al Franken wrote in a joke book.

    4. Brainclog Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 12:51 pm

The “n word” by the way is noodle. Why are you against noodles MDE? Are you too high brow for Ramen noodles now?

    5. Michael B. Brodkorb Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Danno: Franken is no Mark Twain. I think it’s important to have a discussion about Franken’s use of the “n” word.

    6. Pete Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Not only does Angry Al hate women but now he is shown to be a racist. I’m glad he is in the DFL as it seems to be the one party that will accept this type of behavior.

    7. Leroy Jenkins Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:05 pm

How does this show that he hates women and is racist?

It was him commenting on the state of affairs in Florida when Katherine Harris was actively suppressing the black vote. If you don’t understand history, that is fine, but you should also feel free not to comment on it.

If Norm Coleman supports Michael’s position that suppression of the black vote is so much less vile than a simple word, then I guess we have seen where Norm really stands on racial issues.

    8. Aaron Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:06 pm

Franken may not be “no Mark Twain” but that’s not the point. To call this a “vicious use” is an outright lie and it is simply shameful that you’re trying to frame it that way.

      Minnesotans are not that ignorant.

    9. Aaron Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:13 pm

As I know a lot of things are taken out of context around here, I feel the need to correct myself: I intended to write, “Minnesotans are not ignorant.” The word “that” was referring to a person that might legitimately see this post as news, not to imply a comparison against other Minnesotans.

While Al Porn-O-Rama Franken stews in a fetid broth of misogyny, racism, sexual violence and fantasies of bestiality, Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman today salutes the achievements of his predecesor, Senator Norm Coleman:

“Saint Paul has amassed as strong base to build upon as it looks to revitalize its downtown. The Excel Energy Center, which annually brings $23 million in non-resident visitor spending to Saint Paul, is an anchor to down town.

Norm Coleman engineered the agreement which brought the Excel Center, and it’s anchor tennents, the Wild hockey team, to the city of Saint Paul.

I salute Mayor Coleman for highlighting the achievements of former Mayor Norm Coleman.

    11. Leroy Jenkins Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Really? To read the posts from your side, you would think Norm personally hoisted the beams and screwed every last seat numbers down.

The is a vicious lie. Norm Coleman was a democrat when he started championing approval for the vicious new arena, and he worked with the vicious democrats on the city council, and then took the vicious campaign up the hill to the DFL controlled legislature, where they have a vicious number of hearings before finally giving the vicious proposal wings. Rather than give vicious credit to Norm, perhaps you should reserve some of that vicious praise for the true champions, the democratic party.

    12. surly Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:28 pm

      Aaron,

Franken is putting racist words in the mouth of someone he disagrees with politically. There is zero evidence to suggest that anything close to this conversation ever took place.

I can’t think of a more vicious use of the word than to falsely attribute it to someone else to score a cheap political point.

    13. Dumbing it Down For the Left Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm

It is funny that Aaron had to backtrack on his rather dim outlook regarding the good people of Minnesota.

Just a little ignorant Aaron? Is that how you view the people (only to be clarified when you get caught?)

    14. gld Says:

      Michael,

I’d listen to the audio but my employer generally frowns upon hate speech being spewed from employee computers. I’ll take a listen when I get home so as to avoid violating the decency of my workplace.

    15. Leroy Jenkins Says:

This is outrageous. The political tin ear of people like Aaron is incredible.

And the ability to accept even the worst of the worst in political discourse, just because someone has a ‘D’ after their name is shocking.

Aaron, please give us a list of the times when you believe it is ok to use the ‘N’ word. (I don’t even like to use it when posing this question).

Then give us a list of the times when rape is funny.

Then let us know when total objectification of women is acceptable for our public officials.

Just a list of these things please, so we know where you are coming from when you write that this particular use is ok.

    17. Dumbing it Down For the Left Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm

      Thanks Elroy

Do you agree with Aaron that Minnesotans are ignorant, but in this particular case not “that ignorant.”

Or do you believe Minnesotans are, indeed, “that ignorant.”

    18. Capitol Insider Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Steph, for a lot of us the list of times when joking about rape, or utilizing the “n-word” doesn’t exist because neither are ever okay.

But I think that you ask a great question for the Liberals posting here.

We’ll even give you time to think about it.

Ponder, discuss in your chat rooms and coffee shops, and then please post for all of us the complete (as complete as you can make it) list of when the use of that word is acceptable, and when rape is funny.

      I’ll stand by and wait.

    19. DJZ Says:

I’m still waiting for a black person to comment on it.

I imagine that it may be noted that Franken wrote this but, as already stated, the bigger picture is exposing the voter suppression in Florida.
Blacks, or anyone who will weigh the use on that word will also weigh in the very real (rather it was accidental or not) altering of the voter file to exclude thousands of blacks.

    20. Wade Seeker Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm

I’m waiting for leroys outrage over Fat Albores attempt to suppress the military vote during the Florida libtard votefraud extravaganza, Somthing that is proven, unlike his BS about suppressing the black vote (I’d use the n word but political correctness applies to pubbies but libtards can use it all they want)

    21. Swiftee Says:

    22. Leroy Jenkins Says:

When is it acceptable to tell a qualified minority that they can’t vote?

    23. ManGenius Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Hey, if someone wants to write racial, gender and sexual ’satire’ to make a buck, then who am I to judge. I just won’t buy, watch or read his material and will openly question the mindset of those who do.

Nor will I vote for that person to represent me in one of the world’s most powerful organizations. I will openly question the mindset of those who do.

Good thing Al is a Democrat Socialist, the Republicans would have ran this filth-clown out of the party 18 months ago.

    24. jay Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Leroy, a qualified minority should never be told they can’t vote.

The word “qualified” is the key. Over 18, citizen, registered on time, lives within precinct, non felon (in some states).

    25. loris Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

I think Aaron’s comment was an innocent slip. Unlike Two Putt Tommy’s comment yesterday equating American soldiers to a 15 percent tip like you might leave at a restaurant. That was truly appalling.

    26. Wendell Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Norm can brag all he wants about Xcel and the Wild, but in the end the city and state got screwed!

The Xcel Energy Center cost about $175 million to get up and running. At least 75 percent of that money was public, from the state and the city of St. Paul. The city of St. Paul owns the X, but the Wild manage it and get all the revenue from it! They receive nearly every nickel of any event which takes place there, whether it be a Wild game or a U2 concert. The only thing the City gets from the Wild is a yearly payment of between 1 and 2 million.

The real winner of the Wild saga was Naegele who just sold his interest for a boatload of money and just so happens to be a Coleman donor.

    27. DFL Monkey Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Wendell calm down and take a deep breath. If Norm wouldn’t have been ejected from the DFL party, you would be singing his praises right now. Stop complaining and pay your DFL enhanced tax bill already.

    28. J.P. Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Franken’s satire has no meaning. It is used only to shock people and mischaracterize shamelessly. The n word obviously has long deep nasty historic implications. A comedian who is trying to unmask or show a much often overlooked truth or insight and using a kind of shock-comedy can be a good thing. It’s the context. Franken’s humor just doesn’t have much of that. How the heck has he been so successful when most democrats don’t even find him funny? I think I know. You want the reason? Franken uses “satire” to mask his hate for conservatives and vents his bar room rants and imposes his cheap characterizations on anyone in the media who is to the right of Hugo Chavez. He taps the enraged liberal who wakes up every day and can’t stand why the world is not organized and run like a bee hive. People who like Franken’s book read him to get their “fix.” This is entirely human, but people should be aware of what they are engaging in. People shouldn’t mistake real satire for an excuse to use public figures they don’t like in the media as a piñata.

loris, thank you for pointing out, once again, you don’t have a (cheney)in’ clue what you’re posting about.

Steph, your asked: ” Then give us a list of the times when rape is funny.”

Apparently, republiCons believe ape-rape is funny, when told by Bushy McSame.

ManGenius, your ignorant comment that you won’t read something, but reserve the “right” to criticise someone that does, clearly goes to show the republiCon preference for censorship and GroupThink. You’d have been “right” at home in Uncle Joe’s Lenningrad.

Peeker, it’s no surprise that you don’t know Bush sued to stop the Florida vote from being counted; but hey! Drug Limbaugh didn’t tell you that.

All in all, another typical performance by the GreedOverPrinciples crowd.

      Say, Wendell?

Mayor Chris Coleman, a far left Democrat, says that the Excel brings in $23 million per year to the city. It’s been open for eight years…do the math.

The city guaranteed the bonds; it didn’t pitch any money into the construction directly.

The Excel is owned by Minnesota Sports & Entertainment (Nagle & Co.) and operated by the Saint Paul Arena Company.

Norm also managed the city through eight straight years of growth while maintaining a zero tax rate increase.

In the two years since Chris Coleman took office, the city has watched several resturants close, watched tumbleweeds blow through downtown, SP taxpayers have suffered a 23% tax increase and watched two huge development projects head into the sunset.

Try and get your facts straight, then come back and try again..mmmK?

    38. Walter Says:
      July 22nd, 2008 at 4:46 pm

You know lets keep a couple of facts straight.

If I understand this right because Franken used the word “November” he was talking about how Katherine Harris was being told on how to give the election to Bush. Franken as well as Tommy Johnson knowns as fact that Bush won a narrow victory of the state of Florida and the presidential election. Katherine Harris didn’t steal the state of Florida from Al Gore. How inapporiate for Al Franken to be lying on this page in a book called “Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them” So of course by his own admission Al Franken is a Lying Liar.

Katherine Harris went out and earned here Congressional seat. Keep in mind Leroy one of the biggest problems Katherine Harris had in the year 2006 when she ran for the Senate was that the Republican Party of Florida was trying to stop her from being the nominee. So your claim that she was rewarded by the party was a lie. So what else is new?

So isn’t ironic it seems like the people who defend Franken attack Katherine Harris and lie about her, use the fact that somebody else has a language problem, and other issues.

How about gang you focus on the fact that Al Franken was making inapproiate use of the word.

Now for a seperate point on this. Part of the problem we have today is that in the name of political correctness we have people who think that people have to put restrictions on speech. I had a case years ago as a steward I found myself in the need to demonstrate how silly the supervisor had reacted to do a brief demonstration that one of the restrictions in the case my client couldn’t read a book on Brooker T. Washington (a very famous black man if people don’t know their history) or the Minneapolis Star Tribune because you could argue those items were in violation of the case I was arguing.

One person commented that Mark Twain used the N word. Okay Twain wrote it years before political correctness would’ve stopped it from being published. But when we discuss Mark Twain we taken that account into the discussion. How much of the language was used.

In Franken’s case Franken created a totally fictional meeting which didn’t take place and his writing was soley done to make Katherine Harris a woman look bad.

Sorry Franken defenders. You lose no matter how you argue this case!

I just would like to add that when anyone uses the n word that they are technically defiling their own race: the human race. In the book “Race Myth” (by Joseph L. Graves Jr.) the CEO of Celera Genomics (the only major private corporation in the quest of mapping the Genome stated: “race is not a scientific concept” (p.g. 2) Through the mapping of the Genome it was found out in testing that there was no way to distinguish people who were ethnically African American, Chinese, Hispanic or white at the Genome level. The book concludes clearly that race is a man made social construction. A man made problem. Hopefully some day people will lay down their prejudices and welcome into their hearts all ethnicities. We are all one race, man, women and child. We are the human race endowed by our creator.

And J.L.? You should really look at Bush v. Palm Beach County Canvassing Board and Bush v. Gore.

The simple fact of the matter is Florida republiCons supressed the vote, especially the Black vote - and Boy Blunder stole the election, fair ‘n square.

What bootlickers forget, is what they done did, can be done back to ‘em.

Im totally going to bite. Using the n word is appropiate not when joking, but when the desire effect is to point out that someone is racist through satire. This passage isn’t funny at all, it isn’t meant to be. It is meant to satire that Florida Republicans screwed over the blacks in Florida by not letting them vote. But regardless if that is even true, (we can argue if that is true all day), it is obvious that Franken is not endorsing the use of the n word but is rather showcasing how a bunch of racists kept black people down, once again, because they are greedy.

The real debate should be is Katherine Harris actually racist, I’d say no, she just wanted Bush to win badly enough that she picked on a minority group that is very often overlooked.

Let’s not forget that New Orleans is still a complete disaster but we’d rather spend our money on securing oil in Iraq than securing our own people. If New Orleans isn’t a sign of complete disregard for the black population then I don’t know what is, and it’s important to note this disregard happened on Bush’s watch (and the Democratic controlled government of LA, I’ll include them too since it is only fair).

I also highly suggest reading the chapter devoted to the 2000 election scandal in the book, Fire Breathing Liberal by Robert Wexler. Regardless if you are a Dem or Rep., Wexler is the congressman of the area that had all of the hanging chads and butterfly ballots and he very easily showcases how the election was stolen through ballots that were illegal (didn’t follow guidelines enacted by the state of Florida) so the election was a total scam. This does not however speak to not allowing blacks to vote elsewhere in Florida, his district is made up of the elderly who got confused with the ballot, because it was illegally set up.

But to bring it all back together, Franken isn’t racist, he’s pointing out the racism of others through satire.

This quote is right on the money. What Michael is doing by posting about this is simply telling us to divert ourselves away from the man behind the curtain.

Yet you’re going to the marta about how the black vote was suppressed. Will you folks get out of your world of make believe! The black vote was not suppressed. It was an excuse that the Democrats used to try to create that George Bush wasn’t legitimate.

If you want to talk about suppressed votes what about all those legal military votes that Democrats got thrown out. The ones that Joe Libberman and Gore’s Florida chairman both said that should’ve counted.

Oh that’s right. Republican votes let alone the votes of the US Military can be suppressed even if they are a black person, but you will cry fall when people are legitmately removed from the voters rolls.

      Yoni,

Tell me how CNN is “mainly African American sources” and the other links you provided also.

      Now for your links:

The first was about challenging people at the polls. It didn’t prohibit them from voting, it challenges that someone is actually a resident of where they are voting. If they do still live at that address it is easy enough to verify using an ID or DL. And don’t give me that bullshit line that showing ID is intimidation.

The 2nd link is just about worthless though. Nothing but a left wing site. Check out the title of this page “Fighting the Right” http://www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/default.aspx?oid=158

The 3rd link talks about a lawsuit being file by the NAACP v. Harris claiming vote suppression. I looked for any news of the outcome of the case and can’t find a word about it. Not on the NACCP or ACLU websites. That would lead me to believe it was either dismissed or they lost outright.

Just filing a lawsuit does not make something true.

If the Democrats didn’t have such a long and verified record of voter fraudm challenging people wouldn’t be needed.

At least Michael Richards didn’t pretend he was starting a public convo or satirizing the bad guys. He took responsibility and didn’t claim he
was proud of it or that it was socially redemptive.

Al Franken’s Way of “Talking about tough issues of racism porn alchohol”

      1. Declare yourself a satirist.
      2. Be sexist and irresponsible and defamatory
      3. Accuse, or persuade gullible people or people who critically review your work THEY’RE at heart defamatory sexist and irresponsible (ask them did you think that was funny? make them laugh or otherwise draw it out of them).
      4. Say when you were defamatory sexist or irresponsible, you were actually mimicking THESE PEOPLE (point to Mac Stipanovich, Playboy readers who write in, Seagrams execs ).
      5. Ignore irony that short of complicity, you depended on those people you supposedly condemn, and provide them with no hint of a vision or
leadership on racism porn or alchohol.

Al Franken’s attack on Mac Stipanovich was defamatory, baseless, gratuitous and unhelpful. It was unhelpful and innaccurate to present the argument that Republicans were racist in the Florida fight as AoH pointed out above in comment 62.

The Democrats have no right to accuse anyone of tinkering with the voter process. They’re the main culprits.

How, exactly, is a recount going to catch all the African American voters who were turned away at the doors? Katherine Harris made it nearly impossible for any African American to vote in that election, and then she was removed from office…and placed in Congress by the republican party of Florida. The fact that any state party would stand with someone like her (*cough* *cough* Mary Kiffmeyer) is beyond reprehensible.

    88. ansel Says:
      July 23rd, 2008 at 3:04 pm

      leroy,

i suggest you do a little civics study so you understand who is responsible for actually conducting an election.

elections, including arranging voting locations, ordering ballots, counting, etc. are under the control of county government, not the secretary of state’s office. the secretary of state’s office certifies that candidates have properly filed, supplies ballots at request of counties, assures that counts are properly reported (not counted), and declares the winners as required by state law.

what most libs seem to gloss over is that the counties in florida that were challenged by gore were all dem controlled counties, ballots ordered by dems, polling places administered by dems, ballots counted by dems. if people were turned away it was the fault of the counties, no one else.

where gore went wrong is he should of requested a recount of all counties, not just a few dem counties. because he wanted only a few counties recounted, he disenfranchised the remaining counties in florida which of course is unconstitutional because some voters are being treated differently.

    89. Leroy Jenkins Says:
      July 23rd, 2008 at 4:47 pm

      Ansel-

If you Google “Katherine Harris” and “Scrub List” you will quickly see that it is you who doesn’t really get how dirty your side had to get to hijack the White House in 2000.

It is like your side believes that if you ignore your history, it didn’t happen. Right there, in black and white, you will read how it is that the republican party in Florida systematically supressed the black vote in an effort to clinch the election for the Governor’s brother.

But, I won’t assume that you will break precedent and let facts get in the way of your argument.

    90. Walter Says:

      Leroy:

Why are you lying about the year 2000? It was Al Gore who tried to steal the state of florida and the election.

after all instead of coming clean and asking for a recount of the entire state which a lot of Republicans will support he asked for selected recounts.

When said recounts weren’t coming up with enough votes he was suing to get a standard and than get the votes recounted again.

They went out and shamelessly tried to convince people that they had voted for the wrong candidate. They got so many thousands of people convinced that they voted for Pat Buchan instead of Al Gore that Buchan’s vote total didn’t match the total that everybody who claimed they voted for Buchan after the election got on election day.

They went out and showed up for the counting of overseas military ballots something that had been done since 1980 because of an agreement with the Carter Justice Department and got legitimate votes thrown out to try to help Al Gore win the presidential election.

And they were despite the efforts of the state supreme court still not getting enough votes for Al Gore to win the election.

Of course thiefs and the people who support thiefs like to run from this truth.
