Leroy:

Why are you lying about the year 2000? It was Al Gore who tried to steal the state of florida and the election.

after all instead of coming clean and asking for a recount of the entire state which a lot of Republicans will support he asked for selected recounts.

When said recounts weren't coming up with enough votes he was suing to get a standard and than get the votes recounted again.

They went out and shamelessly tried to convince people that they had voted for the wrong candidate. They got so many thousands of people convinced that they voted for Pat Buchan instead of Al Gore that Buchan's vote total didn't match the total that everybody who claimed they voted for Buchan after the election got on election day.

They went out and showed up for the counting of overseas military ballots something that had been done since 1980 because of an agreement with the Carter Justice Department and got legitimate votes thrown out to try to help Al Gore win the presidential election.

And they were despite the efforts of the state supreme court still not getting enough votes for Al Gore to win the election.

Of course thiefs and the people who support thiefs like to run from this truth.

If you Google "Katherine Harris" and "Scrub List" you will quickly see that it is you who doesn't really get how dirty your side had to get to hijack the White House in 2000.

It is like your side believes that if you ignore your history, it didn't happen. Right there, in black and white, you will read how it is that the republican party in Florida systematically supressed the black vote in an effort to clinch the election for the Governor's brother.

But, I won't assume that you will break precedent and let facts get in the way of your argument.

leroy,

i suggest you do a little civics study so you understand who is responsible for actually conducting an election.

elections, including arranging voting locations, ordering ballots, counting, etc. are under the control of county government, not the secretary of state's office. the secretary of state's office certifies that candidates have properly filed, supplies ballots at request of counties, assures that counts are properly reported (not counted), and declares the winners as required by state law.

what most libs seem to gloss over is that the counties in florida that were challenged by gore were all dem controlled counties, ballots ordered by dems, polling places administered by dems, ballots counted by dems. if people were turned away it was the fault of the counties, no one else.

where gore went wrong is he should of requested a recount of all counties, not just a few dem counties. because he wanted only a few counties recounted, he disenfranchised the remaining counties in florida which of course is unconstitutional because some voters are being treated differently.

How, exactly, is a recount going to catch all the African American voters who were turned away at the doors? Katherine Harris made it nearly impossible for any African American to vote in that election, and then she was removed from office...and placed in Congress by the republican party of Florida. The fact that any state party would stand with someone like her (*cough* *cough* Mary Kiffmeyer) is beyond reprehensible.

Yoni, if it is true that Fla. officials did supress legal voters then they should be removed from office.
Fla. 2000 has had countless recounts and investigations, and the results have not gone your way. Also Gore should have known better than to hire a Daly whose family name means voting fraud and stolen elections.

Yoni, so then you believe that Al thinks blacks should be called n______? There really is no call for anyone to use that word - unless they believe it is something blacks should be called. Do you also believe that black people are only 3/5 of person too? Do you believe that they need the Democrat party to guide them because they can't think for themselves like Republicans do? Just asking, you seem to approve of a racist comment by Al so I'm just wondering where you stand on all these things. It seems that between Al and Bill Clinton there are a lot of racists in the Democrat leadership.

And I bet if he didn’t post that you would claim he was lying right?

Actually Audacity, I have the audio book, so I know he said it, I know it wasn't in good taste. But he was illustrating the fact that Florida repeatedly disenfranchised their African American constituents. Which I gave evidence about, but you said nothing..

Al Franken uses racists words to illustrate a point, Republicans use gestapo tactics to make sure that African Americans can not vote in elections... Hmmm I wonder which is worse?

Tell me again why you waste your time here anyway? Nothing more important to do? Or did the liberal blogs ban you because your are such a numb-skull?

So from what I'm reading, Al Franken seems to be the only white person in the world that is allowed to say the N word?

I'd like to get a ruling on that from the NAACP, Jesse Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg.

I seem to remember someone on the Democrat side of the aisle saying "Don't tell me words don't matter".

To clarify the rules here, Swiftee and Chestnut can call anyone they want anything they want, even things much worse than what Coleman Exposer wrote, as long as they are not writing about Norm Coleman?

Them there rules are vicious inconsistent.

That candidate, who shared Norm's ad guy by the way, said it as a derogatory remark TO A PERSON.

Al Franken used it in a satirical look at how Katherine Harris led the Republican charge to suppress the African American vote in Florida. In the case of Franken, he was expanding the discussion on the repugnant actions of the Florida Secretary of State. In the case of George Allen, he was simply being a racist prick who was attempting to demean the democrat's tracker at his event.

Huge (and I dare say vicious) difference there.

Huge difference there.

i guess if using the "n" word is not that serious, we certainly will not hear any reports from the driveby media. being out of town for a couple of weeks i have no idea if it has been reported by any of the driveby's, but you know if a gop-er used it, it would be the headline for several days.

anybody remember an incumbent senator using the word "macocca" and getting absolutely crucified by the washington post?

The "N" word is used in some popular cultural music nowadays.

That presents a bit of a problem in that not many other racial or ethic cultures have had their similar N-type words appear in the pop culture music.

Yep. I hadn't posted for nearly an hour and a half when you posted that I had given up. And I can see how one post in the intertwining minutes had stolen your short span of attention like a jingling set of car keys.

I am not defending AL as much as I am chastising Michael for his vicious attempts at making a vicious controversy out of a vicious pile of nothing.

But then again, if Michael waited around for all the groups he wants to be pissed at Al to actually get pissed at Al, this site would be even more of a vicious waste of time.

Looks like Leroy has given up on defending racist Al Franken. It is about time. There is no defense for this person, he is a racist and a sexist. Al once again proves that the Democrat party is the party of bigots.

Wow, nice long thread.

I usually avoid books like Al's since I am interested in facts rather than the twisted logic of rabid partisans. I won't read right leaning books by the likes of Ann Coulter and several others for the same reason. I have tried but usually find opinion sold as fact within the first pages and give up.

Life is too short for me to spend time trying to decipher a partisan nut-job's grip on reality, right or left.

But, you know what? None of the others are running for the Senate and, judging from the comments from the lefties here, Al’s books must be full of dumb-assed garbage.

You lefties have piqued my curiosity; I’ll have to give them a read and judge for myself.

Got to hand it to you, Chestnut. Your vicious attack on John Edwards appears to be based entirely on some vicious reporting from the folks known for their vicious accuracy, the National Enquirer.

I also took great interest in the story about the alien who was carrying Elvis' love child. Talk about a vicious gestation period.

And as for the matter at hand. When the black community, hell, when even one black person, comes out to denounce Al Franken's use of this word in the context in which it was used, I will be willing to debate the historical implications with them. But until that happens, this strikes me as yet another benign effort by Michael to convince a group of people that are not offended by something that they should be.

Who would ever use the N word even for satire if you know it's offensive?
At least Michael Richards didn't pretend he was starting a public convo or satirizing the bad guys. He took responsibility and didn't claim he
was proud of it or that it was socially redemptive.

Al Franken's Way of "Talking about tough issues of racism porn alchohol"

1. Declare yourself a satirist.
2. Be sexist and irresponsible and defamatory
3. Accuse, or persuade gullible people or people who critically review your work THEY'RE at heart defamatory sexist and irresponsible (ask them did you think that was funny? make them laugh or otherwise draw it out of them).
4. Say when you were defamatory sexist or irresponsible, you were actually mimicking THESE PEOPLE (point to Mac Stipanovich, Playboy readers who write in, Seagrams execs ).
5. Ignore irony that short of complicity, you depended on those people you supposedly condemn, and provide them with no hint of a vision or
leadership on racism porn or alchohol.

Al Franken's attack on Mac Stipanovich was defamatory, baseless, gratuitous and unhelpful. It was unhelpful and innaccurate to present the argument that Republicans were racist in the Florida fight as AoH pointed out above in comment 62.

The Democrats have no right to accuse anyone of tinkering with the voter process. They're the main culprits.

We don't need Al Franken to talk about these things and we don't need him in the senate representing us. Al Franken is too combative and stupid.

I was at my Aunt's house in the kitchen fixing her freezer/refrigerator very late tonight and also listening to The View television show. My Aunt has cable.

They [The View] were discussing an almost similar general topic.

Darryl Strawberry is in town. Perhaps he'd share a comment.

Perhaps Whoopie Goldberg might also.

Yoni,

Tell me how CNN is "mainly African American sources" and the other links you provided also.

Now for your links:

The first was about challenging people at the polls. It didn't prohibit them from voting, it challenges that someone is actually a resident of where they are voting. If they do still live at that address it is easy enough to verify using an ID or DL. And don't give me that bullshit line that showing ID is intimidation.

The 2nd link is just about worthless though. Nothing but a left wing site. Check out the title of this page "Fighting the Right" http://www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/default.aspx?oid=158

The 3rd link talks about a lawsuit being file by the NAACP v. Harris claiming vote suppression. I looked for any news of the outcome of the case and can't find a word about it. Not on the NACCP or ACLU websites. That would lead me to believe it was either dismissed or they lost outright.

Just filing a lawsuit does not make something true.

If the Democrats didn't have such a long and verified record of voter fraudm challenging people wouldn't be needed.

so is this:

this one isn't bad:

Al Franken uses poor humor to illustrate voter suppression in Florida.

You'll read these posts and claim they are not legitimate because they originate from mainly African American sources..... who is the racist?

I like how you changed the timestamp to keep this story at the top, burying the MNGOP press release.

Folks:

The word November was in the passage. Franken is clearly talking about how Harris is being told how to steal the state for Florida a lie! Yet you're going to the marta about how the black vote was suppressed. Will you folks get out of your world of make believe! The black vote was not suppressed. It was an excuse that the Democrats used to try to create that George Bush wasn't legitimate.

If you want to talk about suppressed votes what about all those legal military votes that Democrats got thrown out. The ones that Joe Libberman and Gore's Florida chairman both said that should've counted.

Oh that's right. Republican votes let alone the votes of the US Military can be suppressed even if they are a black person, but you will cry fall when people are legitmately removed from the voters rolls.

"But to bring it all back together, Franken isn’t racist, he’s pointing out the racism of others through satire." - Andrew

This quote is right on the money. What Michael is doing by posting about this is simply telling us to divert ourselves away from the man behind the curtain.

Claiming that Franken is using this word in a racist manner is an insult to those that actually care about race issues and a shameful act.

Im totally going to bite. Using the n word is appropiate not when joking, but when the desire effect is to point out that someone is racist through satire. This passage isn't funny at all, it isn't meant to be. It is meant to satire that Florida Republicans screwed over the blacks in Florida by not letting them vote. But regardless if that is even true, (we can argue if that is true all day), it is obvious that Franken is not endorsing the use of the n word but is rather showcasing how a bunch of racists kept black people down, once again, because they are greedy.

The real debate should be is Katherine Harris actually racist, I'd say no, she just wanted Bush to win badly enough that she picked on a minority group that is very often overlooked.

Let's not forget that New Orleans is still a complete disaster but we'd rather spend our money on securing oil in Iraq than securing our own people. If New Orleans isn't a sign of complete disregard for the black population then I don't know what is, and it's important to note this disregard happened on Bush's watch (and the Democratic controlled government of LA, I'll include them too since it is only fair).

I also highly suggest reading the chapter devoted to the 2000 election scandal in the book, Fire Breathing Liberal by Robert Wexler. Regardless if you are a Dem or Rep., Wexler is the congressman of the area that had all of the hanging chads and butterfly ballots and he very easily showcases how the election was stolen through ballots that were illegal (didn't follow guidelines enacted by the state of Florida) so the election was a total scam. This does not however speak to not allowing blacks to vote elsewhere in Florida, his district is made up of the elderly who got confused with the ballot, because it was illegally set up.

Jay, you're saying republiCons are for "law and order (when it works for us)".

And J.L.? You should really look at Bush v. Palm Beach County Canvassing Board and Bush v. Gore.

The simple fact of the matter is Florida republiCons supressed the vote, especially the Black vote - and Boy Blunder stole the election, fair 'n square.

What bootlickers forget, is what they done did, can be done back to 'em.

And there's nothing more whiny than a republiCon bitchin' when what they done did, is done back to 'em.

Leroy, of course every eligible voter of any race should be able to vote.
We in the Republican party support this idea 100%.
And try to remember that it was Al Gore who had the Military vote suppressed over postage marks.

Let all the legal black voters in Florida vote, and you also have no problem, only a different outcome.

By bringing this up, you have reminded us all that Al Franken was a satirist, and that Norm Coleman was an active player in the republican party's efforts to keep minorities from voting.

Which is more repugnant?

"Bush sued to stop the Florida vote from being counted." ??? Really? Then i guess those 3 recounts done right afterword were just in my imagination. Anyway, as been said a million times, Gore lost his home state of Tenn., and his bosses home state of Arkansas. That`s what lost the election. Win either of those and Florida doesn`t matter.

I've got no problem with the campaign going negative. Just don't launch yet another negative attack on the same day your party is whining about the campaign going negative. I mean jesus, yesterday MnGOP spent 90% of their press release complaining that Franken launched a negative ad lobbing negative attacks at Franken.

The campaign went negative the minute the Democrat party decided to endorse a pathetic human being like Al Porn-O-Rama Franken for US Senate.

The party of scrubs knew full well that Porn-O-Rama's history was chock full of this kind of stuff, and instead of being a problem, this was one of the things that endeared Franken to the party faithful.

Al Franken has an issue with women.
1. He seems to equate rape with sex. It is not. Rape is violence.
2. He seems to think rape/violence against women is funny and to be joked about. It is not.
3. He thinks the N word is to be joked about. It is not.

I think Al needs to go back to his 4th grade teacher and relearn a few things.
