Chestnut-

Perhaps if the republicans had come to the table and participated in substantive discussions on how to curb global warming, the democrats wouldn't have to resort to this method of getting people to drive less.

What's wrong Eva, is there nobody railing against Bachmann or christians over in la la land? As you have been quick to point out over there, this isn't a blog about Bachmann, so quit posting about her.

We don't care about your obession with Michele Bachmann.

Eva,
Yeah, except that one of them (Bachmann) is proposing real solutions to increase supply. Franken seems cozy with high energy prices and seems to believe taxing them higher will lead to... what solution, exactly?

Democrats, as usual, are on the wrong side of the energy problem. They have no near or long-term answers.... just another trip back to the well for higher taxes.

There are zero reasons to withhold oil exploration off shore or in ANWAR. Off shore drilling is safe, and the resources are proven to be there. ANWAR is a barren, coastal plain, close to infrastructure... and with proven reserves.

It's the height of Democrat stupidity and demagoguing to block all efforts to develop those areas.

Republicans are simply advancing realistic solutions that will deliver proven results.

Franken's nonsense reminds me of Michele Bachmann's blathering about her $2.00 per gallon gas plan. Both are demogoging the issue - and are telling people what they want to hear, rather than discussing the real issue, which is supply and demand.

I would never vote for a politician who says what they will do about any issues forever.

Democrat or republican, they would be lying or simply stupid. I want to vote for people who can understand that with changing circumstance come changing needs and opportunities. Not just on the gas tax, but on anything. A politician who promises to unilaterally vote for or against anything forever is not any benefit to the people they represent. We elect these people to think and act in our best interests, not to be robots who are politically paralyzed by lies they told on the campaign trail to get elected.

Aaron: The record is clear. This is from the MN GOP's press release:

Franken Wants To Keep Federal Gas Tax Increase On The Table. Reporter: “So, you’re taking it off the table, is it off the table forever if you’re elected for six years, twelve years? You’re no longer ever going to support a gas tax? Or, if the price of gas drops –” Franken: “If the price of gas drops precipitously, I would put it, it’ll jump right back on the table as something that I would consider.” (Al Franken, Capitol Press Conference, July 2, 2008)

Franken refuses to rule out supporting a federal gas tax increase.

Funny you're still running with those lies.

http://www.alfranken.com/pages/gas_prices

We can't afford to raise the federal gas tax. Last year, in the wake of the 35W bridge collapse, I said that I wouldn't take a small increase in the federal gas tax off the table if it would help to pay for needed infrastructure improvements. But that was when gas cost around $2.70 a gallon. Since then, it's increased by nearly 50%, and Minnesotans are feeling the squeeze. So we need to take that option off the table and find another way to fund our infrastructure: I'll vote against any increase in the federal gas tax.
