MUST READ FROM MINNPOST: “WHAT WENT WRONG FOR AL FRANKEN?”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 31, 2008

Blois Olson has joined the team at MinnPost and he’s starting out with a bang by writing an article about the problems at Team Franken.  Blois’ article is a must read.

###

“Buzz has been strong among DFL insiders for a while that something had to change in Al Franken’s U.S. Senate campaign.  Now that a new staff has arrived and the campaign appears to be changing course, it’s time for a look back on where Franken has gone wrong.

Conventional wisdom says Franken’s woes are related to the back taxes and sexually explicit writings.  But there’s more than that: Franken’s biggest challenge is the burn rate of his campaign and blunders by an inexperienced staff and candidate.

In modern U.S. Senate races, the basics matter:  money, message and media. So far Franken is at a disadvantage on all three.” Source: MinnPost, July 31, 2008

“Nor has he effectively used the press. His work is this area has been reactive and lacked policy positions contrasting him with Coleman. Franken didn’t hold his first policy-focused news conference until last week. So far, Franken has been too dependent on talk-radio-like talking points when dealing with reporters rather than thoughtful and easily communicated points on policy, Iraq and the source of Coleman’s campaign contributions.

In order to subvert what were predictable attacks, Team Franken should have released early in the campaign anything and everything Franken said, wrote or thought that could be used against him. My advice would have been a website called ‘AlsBadStuff.com.’

Franken’s team was ill-prepared for the bad news – and that’s a terrible piece of political malpractice. If Franken’s early staff were doctors or lawyers, their licenses would be in jeopardy.” Source: MinnPost, July 31, 2008

I don’t think Blois knows what he is talking about. The graphic nature of some of Al’s stuff has to be kept quiet. If Minnesotans knew everything he has written and said he would be run out of the state. Just Google porn-o-rama and Al Franken and start reading. The “F” bomb at public political events is uncalled for. His tacky and dirty treatment of Sen Boxer and Sen Clinton ought to provide a nice entre should he be elected although there is really no chance of that.

not sure there is such a thing as tacky treatment of sen boxer, but if there is, let franken continue his exploiting that attitude, as long as it is as a private citizen, not u.s. senator.

Why would we need “AlsBadStuff.com” when we already have MDE? Any thought to creating “AlsBadStuff” into a mirror site?

Was yesterday’s must read, read yesterday, or was yesterday’s must read, read today?

They have a bad, bad product in Al Franken. And no number of East Coast political whiz kids are going to change that. It is a character issue and not one of policy. Franken does not have the personal character to be a Senator from Minnesota and Minnesotan’s understand that. This will get worse for Franken, not better. Blois, putting lipstick on a pig doesn’t change what it is.

Yep, the Minnesota DFL is such a strong party that it has no one better in its ranks but an imported candidate running on out of state financing and who in turn was required to import a campaign staff.

No wonder they don’t reflect Minnesota values.

I think we’re missing two things not mentioned.

One, over confidence of an easy victory. After all Amy K won a large victory and a lot of people figured it will be a repeat of that in 2008.

Two, a lack of being able to coordinate message with your positions. Franken claims that Coleman supports tax cuts for the rich while Franken supports tax cuts for the middle class. Al the tax cuts if not made permanent means the poorest people get a 50% tax rate increase, the marriage and child care credits get taken away. Aren’t you in favor of those tax cuts (wait a minute Coleman is in favor of those as part of making the tax cuts permanent.)

bill, you’re right, this guy DOESN’T know what he’s talking about. Team Franken has been kicking ass and taking names.

Johnney, yup, kicking the asses of women and children. Sexual child abuse, raping women, yup kicking ass. Yes, he took names. Likes to keep a list of people he has felt deserved to be abused so he can look back at it fondly as the good old days.

    Chestnut-

Funny you would mention out of state financing. How much of Norm Coelman’s loot gathered from the oil industry came from within the boarders of this state? I could ask the same about the checks he has received from Larry Craig and Ted Stevens as well. And Jack Abramhoff, was he using a local address when he was buying face time with our Senator?

Seems to me, given the choice between Hollywood wingnuts sending checks and big oil, tobacco and pharmaceutical sending checks, I am pretty sure I know which one the people of Minnesota would favor.

[...] let me acknowledge that I think Blois is dead-on that early on Team Franken shot themselves in the foot repeatedly, and while it may not be shooting itself all the time in the both feet, it’s still shooting at [...]
