COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE PRESS RELEASE: “FRANKEN FALSIFIES DOCUMENT FOR ATTACK AD AGAINST COLEMAN”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 4, 2008

This is a picture of the fake document with a presidential seal created by Team Franken that is cited in their latest attack ad.
###
ST. PAUL – Coleman for Senate Campaign Manager Cullen Sheehan today issued the following statement regarding Al Franken’s latest TV attack ad, which uses a fake report labeled “BUSH PRESIDENCY: 10 Critical Issues” to mislead Minnesotans about Norm Coleman’s record.
“Al Franken’s campaign is in trouble and everyone knows it, including Al Franken. Franken has now hit a new low by creating a fake document with a presidential seal to mislead Minnesotans about his false, negative attacks on Norm Coleman. Franken wants Minnesotans to believe this is a real document to give his false attacks the credibility they lack. Franken claims he wants to talk about the issues, but then fabricates a phony, forged White House document that doesn’t exist. The truth is Norm Coleman has been one of the nation’s most independent minded senators, a fact recognized by non-partisan experts like Congressional Quarterly and the Washington Post. As he falls further behind in the polls, Franken can’t defend his own record of not paying taxes, not paying workers’ compensation and joking about rape, so now he’s just making stuff up.â€
Franken’s Pattern Of Deception:
Franken Deceives Minnesotans About Doing Business In California. “However, the campaign released a statement from Franken’s accountant, Allen Chanzis, who said his office sent a letter to the state of California in 2003 asking it to remove AFI from its tax records as AFI ‘will no longer be doing business in California.’”  (Kevin Duchschere, “Franken Corporation Owes California $5,800,” Star Tribune, April 18, 2008)
“However, state records show that Chanzis filed corporate disclosure forms for AFI with the California Secretary of State’s office in 2004 and 2006. [Franken staffer Andy] Barr said he didn’t know enough about the matter to explain the possibly conflicting documents.” (Kevin Duchschere, “Franken Corporation Owes California $5,800,” Star Tribune, April 18, 2008)
After Franken Claimed He Didn’t Receive Over A Dozen Notices From New York State Over Failure To Pay Workers’ Comp, Doorman States His Signature Was Falsified On Certified Mail Receipt. “Most importantly, I emailed Jason Gauthier a copy of the certified mail receipt, in PDF format, to review. In particular, I asked Jason Gauthier to confirm for me that it was indeed his printed name and signature on the certified mail receipt.  I have to admit I was, and remain, shocked that Jason Gauthier told me, in no uncertain terms: ‘That’s not my signature, sir.’ Not only that, Gauthier denies that he wrote his name on the letter.â€Â Minnesota Democrats Exposed Blog, Accessed August 3, 2008) (
Franken Deceives On Harvard Letterhead. “Comedian Al Franken ’73 knows all about lies and the lying liars who tell them—in fact, in writing his most recent book by that title, he told a few fibs himself. Franken, who sent letters to twenty-seven conservative leaders asking for testimonials for a false book about teen abstinence entitled Savin’ It, found himself in hot water earlier this year when it was discovered that such letters were drafted on University stationery.â€Â   (David B. Rochelson, “Franken Apologizes For Using Letterhead,†Harvard Crimson, September 10, 2003)
Franken Deceives Bob Jones University Officials During Campus Visit. “It is worth noting that Franken lies when it is convenient. I’m not making an incendiary charge here. Franken is very upfront about this himself. He demonstrates it in a chapter about how he had one of his research assistants pose in a trip to Bob Jones University as a high school student interested in attending the school. Franken goes along with him and lies about being a friend of the ‘student’s’ family. Franken, in an excessive bout of modesty, titles this chapter, ‘I’m a Bad Liar.’ Actually, he seems pretty good at it.â€Â   (“Rich Lowry on Al Franken’s Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them – A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right,†http://www.spinsanity.org/debates/20040315-lowry.html, March 15, 2004)
Norm Coleman: An Independent Record
Washington Post Vote Analysis Says Norm Coleman is 7th Most Independent Member of Congress:

National Journal Ranks Coleman as Senate Centrist in 2004, 2006, 2007:
Congressional Quarterly Has Ranked Norm Coleman Among Most Independent Republican Senators:Â www.cq.com
Norm Coleman:Â An Independent Leader for Minnesota
Senator Coleman has broken with the President and his party on a number of important Minnesota issues during his time in the Senate, including votes to override Presidential vetoes of the Farm Bill and the Water Resources Development Act, along with his consistent votes to oppose drilling in ANWR, support the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, delivering disaster assistance for farmers, and increase funding for the Low Income Heating Assistance Program.
Farm Bill
Sen. Coleman Voted to Override President Bush’s Veto of New Farm Bill:
Farm Bill override vote:
1st: May 22, 2008, Vote 140
2nd: June 18, 2008, Vote 151
Water Resource Development Act
Sen. Coleman voted to override President Bush’s veto of WRDA bill.
WRDA vote: November 8, 2007, Vote 406 (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00406)
ANWR
ANWR: Senator Coleman has been a strong and consistent opponent to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), one of the Bush administration’s top energy priorities:
On March 19, 2003, Coleman voted in favor of the Boxer Amendment (S.Amdt. 272) to the FY04 Budget Resolution to prevent consideration of drilling in ANWR in a fast track budget reconciliation bill. The amendment was agreed to by a vote of 52 to 48. (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=108&session=1&vote=00059)
On November 3, 2005, Coleman voted in favor of the Cantwell Amendment to the FY06 Deficit Reduction bill to strike ANWR leasing from the bill.
On March 16, 2005 Coleman voted in favor of the Cantwell Amendment (S.Amdt. 168) to the FY06 Budget Resolution to strike section 201(a)(4) relative to the ANWR. The amendment failed by a vote of 49 to 51, allowing ANWR to be included in the budget over Coleman’s objections.
On December 21, 2005, the Senate took a critical up or down vote on whether to strip ANWR from the Defense Appropriations bill. Coleman joined the majority in voting 48 to 45 to strip ANWR drilling from the defense bill.
Emergency Ag Disaster Assistance
Norm Coleman fought for emergency assistance for Minnesota farmers who experience flooding in 2005 and 2006 and fought for the new permanent agriculture disaster assistance program included in the current farm bill.
Coleman worked to pass agriculture disaster assistance in 2004 by helping to add the provision to a Military Construction bill in 2004, which was similar to a proposal he cosponsored with Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Mark Pryor (D-AR) in September 2003. (Vote 185, September 20, 2004 http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=108&session=2&vote=00185)
Coleman has cosponsored numerous bills with Senator Conrad (D-ND) to provide disaster assistance for the flooding of 2005 and 2006 (110th: S.284; 109th: S.2438, S.3855, S.399)
In March, 2006, Coleman helped pass a $4.2 billion disaster assistance funding bill as part of the Senate supplemental spending bill. Finally, thanks to Coleman’s bipartisan work for over a year, agriculture disaster aid for the flooding of 2005 and the drought of 2006 was signed into law by President Bush on May 25, 2007.
Medicare
Senator Coleman voted to override a veto of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, a bill that would extend expiring provisions under the Medicare Program, to improve beneficiary access to preventive and mental health services, to enhance low-income benefit programs, and to maintain access to care in rural areas, including pharmacy access, and for other purposes. Veto override passed 70-26. (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=2&vote=00177)
SCHIP
Norm voted for expansion of SCHIP, which President Bush opposed. SCHIP is a safety-net health program that provides health care services to low-income children.
LIHEAP
Senator Coleman has been a leading Senate advocate for increased funding for the Low Income Heating Assistance Program:
S.2405, Keep Americans Warm Act of 2007, legislation authored by Senator Coleman (12/4/07) to provide an additional $1 billion in emergency funding for LIHEAP.
S. 2320, a bill Coleman sponsored with Senators Snowe and Collins that increased LIHEAP funding for 2006 by $1 billion nationwide, signed into law by the President.
FY08 Omnibus Appropriations bill included a total of $2.57 billion for LIHEAP, exceeding the President’s budget request of over $1.5 billion for regular and contingency funds.

Of course Coleman does not deny rubber stamping the president’s top ten failed initiatives, just denies that the record of failure was ever codified in a single, easy to read, document.

ROFL!
Let’s avoid the content of the ad: Norm’s record, and let’s attack a graphic illustration. You are attacking a design element. Way to go!
Norm voted with Bush almost 90% of the time and many of the votes where he didn’t were ones that weren’t going to go in Bush’s favor anyway. You can’t run away from that.
Bush-Coleman ’08.

Pssst! Hey buddy, over here.
You did know that George W. Bush is not running for President in 2008, right? It might be time to hit detox for that case of BDS you have going on there.
