AP: “MADIA HAS LAPSED LAW LICENSE IN MINN.’S 3RD DIST.”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 6, 2008

According to public records, Ashwin Madia’s law license has been suspended.  News of Madia’s suspended license was first reported on the blog Jack of All Trades.

###

Democrat Ashwin Madia’s state law license has been suspended after he failed to pay a fee.

Campaign spokesman Abe Rakov (RAY-kov) says Madia just found out about the suspended license and is moving quickly to reinstate it. Rakov says the expiration was an oversight.

State court records say Madia is not currently authorized to practice law.” Source: Associated Press, August 6, 2008

I suspect, practicing law isn’t his focus right now.

If he is not currently practicing law, what the hell difference does it make if his license isn’t current?

    Yawn.

Maybe he got confused with Angry Al(len)’s inability to pay taxes and paid his fee to 17 other states.

A nonstarter, Michael. Anyone ever accidentally let their car tags lapse?

FU Broadkorb. You are “a part-time research consultant to Erik Paulsen for Congress.” This “story” has your dirty fingerprints all over it.

I get credit for this one 3DM. Brodkorb’s slipping.

    You’re a liar, and an ash-hole.

Do you berate your kids with that mouth?

  12. Tom Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 5:29 PM

Ashwin’s inexperience is showing, this was a really stupid rookie mistake. He can’t even keep his law license current, and he wants to represent me in the Legislature?

Maybe he could blame his staff, and do another round of staff shake-ups.

  13. Average Joe Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 6:02 PM

A nonstarter, Michael. Anyone ever accidentally let their car tags lapse?

Yeah, if I were a cab driver or one who depended on my car as my sole source of income I’d forget my tabs, too.

Defend, deflect, and offer idiotic excuses. Jeez.

  14. CherylP Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 6:24 PM

Could someone who is an attorney please explain to non attorneys how one is notified of the date to renew and why it matters if one is not practicing law at the time? I am not making excuses for anyone but read MON’s website and found it interesting that the requirement to renew the license was if one is practicing law and making over $25k at it. If Madia is not practicing law now and is not earning money by defending clients then why would he need to renew his license? Just asking…..

Caveat….not an attorney. Bean counter who would never pay for a license I didn’t need.

  15. ansel Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 7:09 PM

as long as his campaign literature says “former” attorney i don’t really have a problem. however, if he is trying to pass himself off as a candidate that one of his primary attributes is that he is an attorney, then i think he is misleading voters.

as a cpa, mn board of accountancy requires that if you let your license lapse you may still call yourself a cpa, but you must put “inactive” after the designation. as an example many cpa’s go into some other type of business and don’t want to keep up their license due to all the b.s. required such as continuing ed. so if madia is not practicing no big deal–if he is practicing he probably has committed a crime.

  16. Andrew Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 7:11 PM

Average Joe, that analogy would work if Madia was still practicing law, but alas he isnt. Good job.

  17. CherylP Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 8:04 PM

Just did a little more research and found an updated report on MPR. Funny how more info makes a story much less sensational. Letters to Madia were sent to his parent’s house because he was out of the country…..in Iraq…..serving our country as a US Marine. Gosh. I remember being in the US Army and not having a permanent address. When I returned back from overseas my parents pointed me to a huge bin filled with all of the mail I’d received over the 3 years.

Let’s see….Madia was serving our country in Iraq and didn’t get the renewal notice. Doesn’t have quite that sensational a ring, does it?

So…..on the issue of Iraq. Madia knows where it is. He’s served in the US Marines there. He has a well thought out policy for ending that war. What’s Paulsen’s position on Iraq? Anyone found that? Or….did he misplace it? It’s not on his website.

  18. munchkinmom Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 8:08 PM

Ashwin Madia has certainly shown that he is very wise and frugal when it comes to money, just look at how he runs his campaign. His parents are also very honest hard working people, so I believe them that the letter was misplaced.

I know how easy it was to let this slip. When we were a military family and had to declare a permanent home of record, mail got sent there long after we returned to the states. It just happens. And we were married with kids! We did not change our home of record until we actually left the military.

Gee Michael, if you had ever served our country then you would understand things like that and would not make a mountain out of a molehill.

  19. Tom Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 8:08 PM

His spokes person has said it was an oversite, and that he is looking into getting his law license re-instated. He’s admitting to screwing-up, so all you Madia defenders that are saying he let it lapse because he didn’t need it are just making excuses, excuses Madia himself has not made, at least not yet.

  20. CherylP Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 8:15 PM

    Tom,

Just re-read all of the comments. I don’t see one place where anyone defended Madia by saying he doesn’t need it. I see people asking IF he needed it since he’s not practicing law. Different kettle of fish. Please read the last few comments – those reported by MPR and the AP – Madia’s mail was misplaced while serving in Iraq. License fee is paid. Penalty is paid. Issue moot.

    Also, it’s “oversight.”

  21. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Don’t tell the republicans that Madia spent time with the military in Iraq.

They will accuse him of being a carpetbagger who just moved back here to run for an open congressional seat.

  22. shozzy Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 8:35 PM

If he’s not practicing law then I think this is a stretch

  23. ArmChairOperative Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 8:58 PM

“Let’s see….Madia was serving our country in Iraq and didn’t get the renewal notice.” – CherylP

Ashwin’s license was suspended after he failed to pay a fee by July 1. He practiced until he left his job and moved to the 3rd district last fall.

To say that he was in Iraq during this period, is utter nonsense.

The better question might be: Why is he still getting such important mail at his PARENT’S HOUSE?

  24. Master of None Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 9:17 PM

He was supposed to notify the Bar when he changed his address.

    “Under Rule 4 of the
Rules of the Supreme Court for Registration of Lawyers, every lawyer “shall immediately notify the clerk of this court of any change of address.”

Does he still live with his parent’s or has he actually moved out. Or is this another “oversight”?

  25. munchkinmom Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 9:22 PM

As previously stated, I am sure he has not changed his Permanent Home of Record. It is that simple.

I have a single daughter who lives out of state. She still names our home as her permanent home of record.

Anyone who has spent time in the military understands. Maybe the rest of you should enlist and learn.

  26. Tom Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 9:28 PM

That Madia should be ashamed of himself for blaming his parents for his screw-up. When is this kid going to grow up and take responsibility for his own actions? What is even worse than blaming his parents, is that he is also using his service in IRAQ as an excuse.

The fact of the matter is he was discharged from active duty in July of 2006, and he even paid last year bill that was sent to his parents in June of 2007. So my question for Madia is why didn’t you change your address last year when you renewed your law license? I don’t understand why it would take two years to change your address. Especially since Madia was (and now is again) a lawyer, he should have know about rule 4.

  27. Tom Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 9:48 PM

    Leroy Jenkins:

Madia is a carpetbagger, but not because he moved into the district from IRAQ, he didn’t. He is a carpetbagger because he moved from Minneapolis to the 3rd District after Ramstad announced his retirement.

Actually, I think I just figured out why Madia kept his parents address on his law license. Last year he probably didn’t know what Congressional seat would open up, so he knew he would be moving in 2008 but he didn’t know where yet. He just decided to use his parents address, and keep all his belonging packed up in his carpetbag, all ready to go for the upcoming election.

  28. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 10:48 PM

This is just like when Norm Coleman moved here from Iowa where he attended law school. He no doubt made the move with every intention of running for the senate in 2002.

  29. Tom Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 11:10 PM

Your analogy isn’t even close. Colman lived in Minnesota many years before running for Senate in 2002. He also didn’t wait for an open seat, he ran against a two term incumbent. Madia lived in a different district, and moved into the 3rd when the seat became open. Madia is a carpetbagger, there no amount of spin can change that fact.

  30. Tommy Johnson Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 7:43 AM

” Madia lived in a different district, …”

And which district would that be?

  31. Tom Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 8:18 AM

    The 5th, Minneapolis.

  32. Chestnut Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 8:59 AM

This whole conversation is pretty stupid.

  33. Pete Wendell Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Not being a practicing attorney is a badge of honor.

  34. MNObserver Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Norm Coleman’s law license isn’t current either.

  35. munchkinmom Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 3:29 PM

    Neither is Michele Bachmanns.

  36. munchkinmom Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 3:32 PM

And if Madia is a carpetbagger, someone who went to Osseo High School and someone whose parents live here, then what about Coleman?

His accent is certainly not Minnesotan!

I agree with Chesnut– this is a stupid conversation.

  37. Tom Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Spin all you want Munchkinmom, but the fact of the matter is Madia moved into the district for the sole purpose of running for congress. He is very clearly a career politician wannabe. Just because he may have had some ties to the district, doesn’t make him any less of an opportunist.

As for Coleman being a carpetbagger, that is ridiculous. He didn’t move into a district and immediately run for public office like Madia. Coleman worked here for quite a while before he ran for office.

I’m starting to sense some buyer’s remorse on the part of you Democrats. You nominated someone who wasn’t ready for the job, and his inexperience is starting to show. Unfortunately you lost a golden opportunity to take over the 3rd district seat this election cylce. You might have a shot at it again in two years if you nominate a decent candidate, but it will be harder because Paulsen will be an incumbent.

  38. Tom Says:
    August 7th, 2008 at 11:03 PM

    Pete:

I couldn’t agree more when you said, “Not being a practicing attorney is a badge of honor.”

The problem is Madia being an attorney, was the only pausible arguement for him being qualified to be a Congressmen.
