MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “ASHWIN MADIA: LAPSED LAW LICENSE, LAPSED JUDGMENT”

    By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 6, 2008

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement after media reports revealed DFL candidate Ashwin Madia’s law license had lapsed.

Ashwin Madia’s failure to renew his law license because it was ‘an oversight’ is just one more example of why he isn’t ready to represent the people of the Third District. While he’s happy raising money with the scandal-tainted Charles Rangel, Madia has apparently failed to keep his key credential for serving in the House up to date.”

“State court records say Madia is not currently authorized to practice law. The records say his license expired on July 1 and his last payment was made in June 2007.” (“Madia Has Lapsed Law License In Minn.’s 3rd Congressional District,” Associated Press, August 6, 2008)

“Key credential”? Being a US Marine and having served in Iraq is a key credential. Being a patriot who worked on the rule of law is a key credential. Law degree from NYU is a key credential. License is reinstated. Fee and fine paid.

So, on to Erik Paulsen’s key credentials. Let’s see…..being a career politician. Loosing the majority on his watch in the Minnesota house. Having no position on Iraq (nor any proof that he even knows where it is) would be a key credential.

Let’s focus on important issues - where does Erik Paulsen stand on Iraq. If you’re a researcher for him, Michael, could you ask him or could you possibly help him find a position? When he finds one or has one written for him, could you share it? We’d like to compare it to the well thought out, reasoned position of a patriot who actually served there.

I have to come clean. Three summers ago, I went fishing in Louisiana. I got a license so as to fish legally, but I have not fished there since, and as such, I let my license lapse.

      For this, I deeply apologize.

This is a pretty stupid nit.

I to must admit a past sin. I was once a licensed bar tender in Wisconsin. After graduating from college and moving back to Minnesota I let my license lapse. Though I have not since professionally served a drink in the state of Wisconsin I apologize to my family and country for this regrettable failure in judgment.

Gosh, my car tags lapsed once and I didn’t know it. I had little kids who had the flu and a husband who was stationed elsewhere. I took care of it as soon as my kids stopped throwing up.

Sometimes things happen. Madia corrected his oversight. So did I.

“Under Rule 4 of the Rules of the Supreme Court for Registration of Lawyers, every lawyer “shall immediately notify the clerk of this court of any change of address.””

Madia’s had at least three addresses since returning from Iraq. Yet his license still listed his parent’s address as of this morning.

Does he still live with his parents?

    7. munchkinmom Says:
      August 6th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

As previously posted, I am sure that Madia had his mail sent to his parents home because it was listed as his permanent home of record.

I am sure that when he originally applied for his law license he used his permanent home of record.

Oversight happens. He owned up it, took care of the problem and life goes on.

Should we discuss Norm Coleman’s digs in DC? Now THERE’S an interesting topic.

I believe Erik Paulsen will win.

But this attack is pretty weak.

      I dislike Erik Paulsen.
I believe Erik Paulsen will lose.

And I also think this is pretty weak.

Attacking a guy for missing a letter that was sent to him while he was SERVING IN IRAQ.

Seems to me your shame has no boundaries. I assume your next attack will be that he moved back home from Iraq when he heard Ramstad was retiring, and as such, is a carpetbagger who can not be trusted.

    10. Master of None Says:
      August 6th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

“Attacking a guy for missing a letter that was sent to him while he was SERVING IN IRAQ. ”

He wasn’t in Iraq. He was paid up through June of 2007. The letter came after that.

He was somewhere in between his downtown apartment in CD5, his parent’s basement, or an apartment in Maple Grove.

    11. Tom Says:
      August 6th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

The fact of the matter is, Madia screwed-up. He made a stupid mistake that no one with a semi-decent campaign staff should make. He compounded his error by blaming his parents and his IRAQ service.

He left the Military in 2006, and even paid his dues last year, so there is no excuse for him still using his parents address for something so important. By blaming his Parents, Madia is just reminding voters about his youth, and inexperience. He made himself look like he is still a kid.

I guess I do see your point. I must confess my daughter still uses our address as her permanent home of record. Although in her defense, she is only 2. Come to think of it, I hope she changes that before she runs for Congress.

    14. Leroy Jenkins Says:
      August 7th, 2008 at 12:08 am

I can’t believe you republicans are so revved up about attacking a veteran who was unable to file paperwork due to his service in the military.

Why do republicans hate veterans so badly?

    15. Brian Says:
      August 7th, 2008 at 12:33 am

I guess the only way the left supports the military is when they are democrats. Otherwise they throw them under the bus.

    16. Leroy Jenkins Says:
      August 7th, 2008 at 12:51 am

And the only way the right supports the military is if the defense spending increases in their district.

      August 7th, 2008 at 1:46 am

Wow…everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of the guy who served honorably in Iraq all because he’s a Democrat.

But when it comes to a man who was a POW for nearly 6 years in Vietnam, these same people go and make fun of his teeth and attempt to discredit his service.

People like Yoni are hypocrites, and deserve nothing more than to be beaten severely.

    20. Yoni C. Says:
      August 7th, 2008 at 3:00 am

      Abraxia,

no one discredited McCain’s service, you maybe a bit confused, if you wanna talk about discrediting someone’s service, how bout John F. Kerry 2004? A soldier wounded three times in battle was called a liar, even after the military issued him, not one, not two, but three purple hearts. And you have the nerve to call democrats hypocrites for being proud of one of our veterans.

Its people like Paulsen and like Bush/Coleman who will rubber stamp wars, without ever serving in o ne. Sending brave men and women like Madia, and like McCain and Kerry before him, into war while they sit back and watch it all from the sidelines.

That is the ultimate hypocrisy my friend, and we are paying the bill for it as tax payers, and our brave men and women are paying for it with their lives and their limbs.

And concerning McCain’s teeth, he is the richest US Senator in office…. the advancements in teeth restoration are quite phenomenal, Coleman got his teeth fixed, I think it is time for McCain to do to the same…..

    21. Tom Says:
      August 7th, 2008 at 3:28 am

      MBB:

Congratulations, if the DFL commenters on this blog are to be believed, that means you somehow got Ashwin Madia to stop paying his license fees, and move back in with his parents. I don’t know how you did that, but good job!

So did you use the same technique to get Franken to stop paying his Work’s Comp, and his taxes in all those states? How did you get him to write the porn, and all those disgusting jokes?

    22. Walter Says:
      August 7th, 2008 at 7:25 am

      Yoni:

Maybe you are not aware of the circumtances how John Kerry’s military service was being attacked and why.

      * As the Swift Boat veterans pointed out that Kerry used a rule that if you win three purple hearts you get out of service. They believed that Kerry gamed the system to get out of ther service after he got transferred to dangerous duty. The first purple heart was according to Kerry’s own spokesperson “An unintentional self inflicted wound” According to the standards of the military self inflicted wounds do not get purple hearts.

      * Kerry was running for President because he claimed that he had behaved heroically on a certain day of his service. A bunch of the swift boat veterans said that Kerry had fled the scene and didn’t act heroically. And keep in mind Yoni the person who Kerry rescued who helped Kerry win Iowa and propel him to the nomination by his own admission when he tried to rebut thw swift boat vets destroyed his credibility by saying that he was under water and thus couldn’t describe the surface movement of the boats (Kerry who commanded the boat had his boat flee the scene for a few minutes).

And what really ticked vietnam vets off was that after he got out of the service was his antiwar activities including testifying (illegally by the way) about the war and accusing all the troops serving in Vietnam of committing war crimes.

To the best of my knowledge no one has done that with Media.

As for being the richests US Senator you mean he has more money than the millionarie Democrats such as Rockefeller, Kerry, Feinstein, Kohl, etc.

And one thing to all of you people who want to make jokes about this (oh my tabs are expired) or say his military service is being attacked or try to make an excuse since the state bar doesn’t have the right adress keep this in mind. HE IS ENGAGED IN A PROFESSION WHICH REQUIREMES HIM NOT ONLY TO PAY A FEE, BUT TO ALSO TAKE CLASSES TO REMAIN CERTIFY. PART OF HIS PROFESSIONAL DUTY IS TO KEEP HIS LICENSE LEGAL. IF HE ISN’T DOING THAT HE ISN’T BEING PROFESSIONAL AND DON’T WE WANT A PROFESSIONAL TO BE A MEMBER OF CONGRESS FOR US?

“and even paid his dues last year”

To be fair, I’m sure, like is the case for 97% or more of lawyers, his firm automatically paid his dues last year. I’m not even convinced the bar would have even mailed a notice to his permanent address of record. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a renewal notice.

The reality is that most lawyers have never had to deal with renewals so it’s not fresh on their mind and more importantly, it’s not going to be fresh on your mind when in fact you aren’t actually practicing law.

Remember, it’s not exactly uncommon for those in politics to let their licenses lapse. Case in point:

0017875 NORMAN COLEMAN NOT AUTHORIZED TO PRACTICE 01/01/09

NOT AUTHORIZED: RESIDENT - NOT PRACTICING IN MN

      CLE Status
