NRCC PRESS RELEASE: “ABSENT-MINDED ASHWIN CONTINUES FORGETFUL STREAK”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 7, 2008
Washington- Ashwin Madia has apparently been so busy trying to prop up his long-shot congressional campaign for Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District that he failed to keep his license to practice law in good standing. Now that word is out that Madia’s license has been suspended, he’s “moving quickly†to cover up his complete lack of respect and ability to comply with the law:
“Democrat Ashwin Madia’s state law license has been suspended after he failed to pay a fee.
“Campaign spokesman Abe Rakov (RAY-kov) says Madia just found out about the suspended license and is moving quickly to reinstate it. Rakov says the expiration was an oversight.
“State court records say Madia is not currently authorized to practice law.
“The records say his license expired on July 1 and his last payment was made in June 2007.†(Associated Press, 8/7/08)
“If Ashwin Madia can’t keep his own legal affairs in order how on earth are Minnesota voters supposed to trust him to write their laws?†said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Ashwin Madia doesn’t seem to have any problems remembering the birthday of scandal-scarred Congressman Charlie Rangel. That’s probably because there is a financial benefit to his campaign.â€
Unfortunately for Ashwin, this wasn’t the first time he’s chalked up a faux pas to forgetfulness. In a Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) interview, just two days before the DFL convention, Madia claimed that he voted for Al Gore in the 2000 election. Just four days later, however, once Madia had received his party’s nomination, he admitted to a local newspaper that he actually voted for President George W. Bush. (MinnPost.com: Eric Black, 4/14/08)
Madia’s mishaps extend all the way back to the time he served as the Minnesota Student Association President, resulting in impeachment proceedings against him for violating constitutional by-laws for giving away funds before he actually received budget approval. (University Wire, 10/29/97)
The voters of Minnesota deserve a capable representative who will work hard in Congress to deliver results, not someone like Madia who cannot escape a growing pattern of dereliction of duty.

last night i did not think this was too big a deal. however, i went to Madia’s website and in his bio he certainly sounds like he is still practicing. i note he worked for ceresi’s law firm so i would guess he got fired/left well over a year ago because most large law firms make sure their attorney’s are licensed.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Wow! Madia is so unqualified to hold public office it is ridiculous. I used to laugh that Madia’s only elected office was student body president. Now I find out he made a major screw-up there. No mater what organization you are in, it is a major no-no to disburse funds without proper approval.
Even though it may have been a while ago, it is still a very important thing for the voters of the 3rd district to consider. He had a major ethical lapse in the only elected office he held, and now he wants to become a Congressman with a responsibility to vote on a Trillion dollar budget?

madia’s qualifications fit into the dem mold: he and obama think their “funny” names will carry them to victory since neither has any qualifications for the office they are seeking.
actually, at least madia has served in the army. he is probably better qualified than barack to be commander in chief.

His license lapsed while he was in Iraq fighting for your freedom.
Show some respect.
August 8th, 2008 at 12:02 am
the timing doesn’t jive with his bio on his website. he says he returned from iraq on 7/4/06 and then went to work for ceresi’s firm. as noted above, last payment to keep his license current was june, 2007.
did he lie about his military service? did he do a secret mission to iraq between july, 2006 and june, 2007?
August 8th, 2008 at 12:56 am
Yeah, and the right’s description of the employee free choice act didn’t jive with the ACTUAL TEXT OF THE ACT, but that didn’t stop people from repeating lies in hopes one day it would become true.
I am trying out republican theory on this one to see if I repeat a lie often enough, if it becomes true.
So, again, I ask that you show a little respect for our service men and women and recognize that while they are in the Middle East valiantly fighting for our freedom, that you not be surprised when they miss a piece of mail as inconsequential as the piece of mail Madia apparently missed.

So does Erik Paulsen have a position on Iraq yet?
August 8th, 2008 at 4:23 am
I assume you all were equally upset at Mark Kennedy for having an inactive CPA license in 2006…especially after he claimed the senate could use a CPA. Thanks, I’m anxious to here your replies.

“I assume you all were equally upset at Mark Kennedy for having an inactive CPA license in 2006…especially after he claimed the senate could use a CPA. Thanks, I’m anxious to here your replies.”
YES…that’s we voted against him and now we are STUCK with Amy.

Leroy Jenkins:
It is nice to see you are finally admitting to lying to try and get Madia elected. It is really the only strategy that has a plausible chance of working for him. Unfortunately for him, it is only August and the voters are already figuring him out.
Also, I hate to nit pick when someone makes a couple small mistakes in their posts, but you got a couple of words wrong in the first two paragraphs. They should have read, “Yeah, and the [left’s] description of the employee free choice act didn’t jive with the ACTUAL TEXT OF THE ACT, but that didn’t stop people from repeating lies in hopes one day it would become true.
I am trying out [the Democrat] theory on this one to see if I repeat a lie often enough, if it becomes true.

His license lapsed while he was in Iraq fighting for your freedom.
Liar. He wasn’t fighting in Iraq in July.
Jeez you people are stupid.
August 8th, 2008 at 7:19 am
“His license lapsed while he was in Iraq fighting for your freedom.”
LIAR!
August 8th, 2008 at 7:20 am
“His license lapsed while he was in Iraq fighting for your freedom.”
Liar!
He returned from service in Iraq in 2006. He renewed it in June 2007 well after he returned from Iraq. It expired in July 2008 when he failed to renew it.
So Leroy, are you just a pathological liar or did you fail reading comprehension classes?
August 8th, 2008 at 7:32 am
Madia has not been practicing law, as he has been campaigning full time. That should be familiar to Erik Paulsen; he’s been a career politician for years!
August 8th, 2008 at 7:57 am
“His license lapsed while he was in Iraq fighting for your freedom.”
No it didn’t. That lie is just about as stupid as nittering on about a lapsed law license.
August 8th, 2008 at 8:10 am
That should be familiar to Erik Paulsen; he’s been a career politician for years!
Another liar. He works for Target Corporation.
Now, you want to talk about “career politicians” let’s look at:
Phyllis Kahn
Mike Jaros
Tom Rukavina
Jean Wagenius
Alice Hausman
Mindy Greiling
These clowns actually list “legislator” as their occupation.
August 8th, 2008 at 8:26 am
Jeff Rosenberg told a lie? Surely you jest.
Just kidding. That lazy, intellectually dishonest boob couldn’t tell the truth if there was no such thing as a lie.
August 8th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Well, clearly after getting their a** handed to them after trying to go after Madia on an actual issue (Iran) MnGOP has decided this race can only be one with personal attacks as well. Missing a license deadline for a license he wasn’t using, misstating his presidential vote 8 years ago, and an impeachment attempt (when, mind you, clearly impeachment was chic) back in his college days… that’s your three pronged attack for victory in CD3?
I mean really, isn’t forgetting to take an actual position on most major national issues the bigger qualification problem for someone running for the U.S. House? As soon as he fixes that one up, Paulsen can start talking about forgetfulness.
And, what the hell is this gem?
“moving quickly†to cover up his complete lack of respect and ability to comply with the law”
At what point did not maintaining your law license –especially if you don’t actually practice the law–become a violation of law?
August 8th, 2008 at 8:38 am
I really hope that we’re not all subjected to a hundred threads on Madia’s law license.
What’s next, Madia forgot to take out the garbage?
August 8th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Madia was in Iraq fighting for your freedom. How dare you questing how he handled his mail while he was in the middle east keeping us safe from all those weapons of mass destruction and terrorist cells? When Iraq announced last week that they had a $80 billion surplus in their federal government, I knew I had Ash Madia to thank.
Thank You, Ash Madia! You are a true hero, despite what all these veteran hating republicans think!
August 8th, 2008 at 8:48 am
This is s first – I agree with Chestnut. It’s irrelevant in the scheme of things. The license lapsed. The oversight was noted, corrected, fine paid. End of issue.
Shall we ask whether or not Michael has found (or written) a position on Iraq yet for Erik “the career politician” Paulsen? Seems to me he either hasn’t had one or has misplaced it.
Michael…..you are a paid researcher for Erik, right? Could you research that for us?
August 8th, 2008 at 9:21 am
“The license lapsed. The oversight was noted, corrected, fine paid. End of issue.”
You left out the part where the ex-marine blamed mommy and daddy.
August 8th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Chestnut wrote “I really hope that we’re not all subjected to a hundred threads on Madia’s law license.”
For once, Chestnut, I agree with you. This is a non-issue. Let’s move on to other things, like Erik Paulsen’s refusal to take a stand on important issues.
August 8th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Why do all you republicans HATE veterans?
They were all fetuses once too!
August 8th, 2008 at 9:46 am
I can’t wait to hear Paulsen make his sound byte comments at the upcoming debates. Nothing of substance, just talking points to the base. just like he did on WCCO.
Remember, he is the guy who lost 43 seats while majority leader. And his idea of reaching across the aisle to craft working solutions for all of Minnesota was to shut down government.
Michael, have you figured out a way to ‘talking point’ those facts away?
August 8th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Leroy, ZING!
August 8th, 2008 at 11:46 am
“Now that word is out that Madia’s license has been suspended, he’s “moving quickly†to cover up his complete lack of respect and ability to comply with the law:”
you smoking some mighty fine crack, michael. it is not against the law or disrespectful to let your license lapse. when a lawyer stops practicing and has no interest in being a member of the bar anymore, then you can simply stop paying and forfeit your license. it would only be illegal if he was continuing to practice after June 2008 (when his license expired without renewal).
so yeah, much ado about nothing. hey, at least your consistent.
August 8th, 2008 at 11:54 am
it didn’t take leroy long to acknowledge his initial inaccuracies then start repeating them later in the blog. but then what would you expect from a lib.
and for those of you that were criticizing mark kennedy using “cpa” designation. that is allowed by mn statute. he just could not practice as a cpa unless he was licensed which meant paying his fees and obtaining sufficient continuing ed. if you pay your fees to mn board of accountancy you can still use cpa designation. incidentally kennedy has paid his fees and continues to do so–his license # is 6328.
August 8th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
I give Madia credit.
He fixed the problem and is hoping it goes away, but he did not make up ridiculous lies of denial.
At least he didn’t prove himself to be the Inveterate Liar that Al Franken is, which for a Democrat is about as good as it gets.
August 8th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
“Let he without sin cast the first stone”. I would like see people respond to this misstep with the “big picture” in mind. I’d rather have the discussion about the candidate’s ideas and plans for our district and our country. So far, I’ve heard very little specifics from the Paulsen camp (I’m hopeful that will change), and a great deal of specificivity from Madia. He’s intelligent, articulate, and a great choice to represent our district for the next 2 years plus.
August 8th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Yeah rainman, he’s a great choice if you like being taxed to death.
August 8th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Go to Madia’s website and do some reading. He is quite fiscally conservative.
August 8th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
MunchinMom:
Madia just tells people what they wants to hear, so you should like him a lot. If you look at the thing’s he’s said in front of liberal audiences you will get a much different picture.
Furtunately for use, most of the voters in the 3rd are not as easily fooled as you.
