PUBLIC EMBARRASSMENT FOR TEAM FRANKEN: ONLY ONE PERSON ATTENDS CAMPAIGN EVENT
By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 8, 2008
The St. Cloud Times is reporting that only one person attended a public event for Al Franken today. Yes, things are that bad for Team Franken.
###
“There’s an old saying in politics that elections are won or lost one vote at a time.
On Friday, DFL-endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken demonstrated how true that saying can be, when a roundtable on veterans issues at Brigitte’s Cafe his campaign scheduled drew only one participant.” Source: St. Cloud Times, August 8, 2008

“He said he did not know how much the program would cost, or how he would pay for it.”
Now there’s a well thought out plan, Al.
And this guy calls accountants inept?
August 8th, 2008 at 9:20 PM
he is lucky only one person came other than the press. he was unlucky there was a reporter there.
he promised to make VA benefits a new entitlement, but did not know how much it would cost. isn’t this the cat’s meow like most other lib programs. promise, promise, promise and let some other poor slob deal with making payment.
it is not that i am against entitling va programs. if any benefit should be entitled it is for our veterans. but if you do not know the cost then how will you how much in taxes to raise (dems) or spending to cut (gop)?

I wonder how many shades of red Al’s face turned when he heard this:
“My mom and my aunt eventually got me to talk with my county VSO. He got me registered with the VA and since then, I haven’t had a problem. I’ve gotten a lot of help, and every question I’ve gotten answered,†John said.”

Reminds me of the classic clip where the “impartial” reporter was interviewing Katrina victims and was literally begging them to blame anything on President Bush. He was dumbfounded when every one of them had no complaints and admitted any hardships they faced were the result of their own decision making or local (Democrat) officials.

HILARIOUS!!!!!!!
That is so funny and Michael didn’t even exaggerate the story.
Somewhere back at Franken headquarters Franken is screaming in expletives at some poor staffer.
I can see Hatch yelling also, to be fair.
August 8th, 2008 at 9:45 PM
didn’t you like the headline from the st. cloud times: “lightly-attended campaign stop”. no doubt another lib newspaper. if it had been coleman the headline would have been something like attended by one person.
at least the story got out and even the one voter there was not all that critical of the va. this is unbelievable bad scheduling management as you always want to make sure the crowd looks like it is overflowing the arena.

What about the public embarrassment for the state Republican Party last night at the Senate District 16 Endorsing Convention!
I distinctly heard Michael Brodkorb state that it is essential to work hard on behalf of the party endorsed candidate at any level. Something along the lines of those not getting the endorsement should quit whining and be content with the fair endorsing process. If I am not mistaken, he said this about MARK OLSON on his radio show when Rep. Olson was planning on running again despite being tossed from the House Republican Caucus.
I can’t wait to hear Brodkorb’s take on this tomorrow during the Final Word.

Ufta. That is really bad. We’ll see what gets more attention, this or Franken’s commericial with a veteran’s dad.

The reporter that wrote the article for the St Cloud Times is a die in the wool liberal. He had splashed up coming Franken visit all over Times,. and this is response. The one guy that did show up actually came for the all you can eat fish and Al collered him.
August 8th, 2008 at 11:48 PM
olson should be toast. actually i think i recall michael, although it could of been one of the other shows on the patriot, state it was about time olson was not endorsed or had withdrawn from the legislative race, now this unbelievable lunacy.
i don’t know what that endorsing caucus was thinking. is it possible some of franken’s supporters have become republicans and are trying to sabotage the gop like they did the dems?
August 8th, 2008 at 11:54 PM
i guess i will wait and hear michael tomorrow, but i personally would never work for olson. of course, this is somewhat easy for me to say since i do not live in his district.
just because he is a gop-er is no reason to give him blind support.

ansel,
This is exactly why party endorsements are trouble. You get a handfull of people in a room who don’t know or care about electability or even winning and look what you get — a guy who just assaulted his wife and was kicked out of the House GOP caucus. That same mentality endorsed a guy running for Congress in MN who had no prior political involvement and then it’s reported by the Politico, MPR, the Strib, Pioneer Press and elsewhere that he didn’t pay his property taxes on time nearly every time for the last five years.

I guess the fax machine must have been broken.

I totally disagree with the Olson decision. Get rid of him.

So, who was the intrepid sole?

Is the point here that Al Franken can’t attract a crowd? As a charter member of Al’s less than biggest fan club, even I acknowledge that Franken is a charismatic individual with incredible personal appeal. His chanllenge is to dial it down, not up.
August 9th, 2008 at 10:08 AM
“His chanllenge is to dial it down, not up.”
Right. From 612, to 212.

I had to hurl after reading that.

“I had to hurl after reading that.”
Writing it wasn’t all that pleasant either. Al and I go way back together and I have always felt competitive towards him. Sort of like the way a tortoise might compete with a 747, with similar results, I might add.
I don’t know what other experiences people have had with him, but having met and talked with him recently, I can tell you that Al is a very nice guy who has to work hard not to light up a room. That is an objective fact.
August 9th, 2008 at 1:13 PM
I agree that Al can attract a crowd- much the same as Bill O’Reilly can attract a crowd. It’s just not the people who you need to win an election. They alienate the middle, the moderates and independents, and they scare away the uncommitted members of their own parties.
Congratulations on six more years, Senator Coleman!

Al has his fault, as this website has very efficiently established. But I will tell you this. Al is passionate about what he believes. That is his greatest strength. I think that more than anything else is what terrifies his opponent and by the way is what fuels this website’s over the top obsession with bringing him down. And the reason for that fear, that obsession, is that Al’s opponent is perhaps one of the most cynical, most self serving politicians in public life today. Don’t we all know this in our hearts, Republicans and Democrats alike? So what we have here is a situation where one politician’s greatest strength is paired with another politician’s greatest weakness. Is it any wonder Al’s opponenents are so eager, so desperate to divert attention from the race we have in front of us to magazine articles from long ago?

Maybe it’s worth noting that if we make the decision that this election should be decided on the basis of who is a better mocker, I think Al Franken would win easily.
Republicans prefer employing mockery tactics to discussions of issues because in the past the former worked better for them.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:13 PM
[...] Jacobs is absolutely correct. The east-coast transplants and Washington D.C. staffers who have parachuted into Minnesota to try and save Franken’s “foundering†campaign haven’t come close to fixing the problems. Just this week, Team Franken’s political operation organized a campaign event that only one person attended. [...]

Hey Minnesota DFL! If Mr. Franken loses this election, HE WILL leave Minnesota quickly. Faster then Jesse. Like all comedians he will work life experiences into his comedy routine. We are going to be the butt of his jokes and anger for years to come. For those of us who live outside of his comfort zone, that being anything the doesn’t feel close to LA or NY ( mainly MPS/StP) we are going to serve as punching bag in his political tirades of the future. Thanks a lot.
