JACOBS ON FRANKEN: “IT’S HARD TO SEE HOW HE’S GONNA WIN”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 10, 2008

Professor Larry Jacobs of the Humphrey Institute was on WCCO-TV this morning and said “[i]t’s hard to see” how Al Franken wins:

“Well, I think the big problem for Franken, is he’s trying to get his party going, and in the base of his party, McCollum is a Democrat and the message she sent out during the Democratic convention here in Minnesota, was that Franken’s past commentary was offensive to women, particularly, his Playboy piece.

And you look at the polls and what you see Franken is tied up among women and he’s tied up among Twin Cities residents, even among union households he’s got a pretty close race.

This is devastating for any sort of Democrat to win in Minnesota, the McCollum lack of an enthusiastic endorsement, and the sense that he may not be the candidate that Democrats can get enthusiastic about, it’s crippling. It’s hard to see how he’s gonna win unless he really reverses this.” Source: WCCO-TV, August 10, 2008

Jacobs is absolutely correct. The east-coast transplants and Washington D.C. staffers who have parachuted into Minnesota to try and save Franken’s “foundering” campaign haven’t come close to fixing the problems.  Just this week, Team Franken’s political operation organized a campaign event that only one person attended.

You seemed to have forgotten the part where Lacobs said the race will tighten up. Hmm, wonder why?

Anyways, I would think the race will tighten up here and the polls will show Franken within the margin of error. Once the primary is over, and Franken is nominated, the real damage will begin.

Once Franken is locked as the candidate, and Faris is out, the Republican machine will unleash on Franken. I would expect to see ads discussing the drugging and raping of Leslie Stall, at the very least.

Minnesotans will see Bush in his final days and forget that Coleman holds many of his same policies.

Barkley won’t be a factor at all, leaving only Franken and Coleman. Expect Coleman to win with a comfortable margin.

Lord Faris may not win the primary but she is certainly right about Franken and if the press will give her own biography and backround a little coverage she will shine over Al. His biggest day in the last couple of months was Betty McCollum and look at the adverse reaction for Betty. And the weakness of the endorsement was telling, not really an endorsement at all but squeezed out of her with all the power the DFL hierarchy could muster and she buckled.
The St. Cloud debacle is unbelievable. Maybe a historical first for any candidate, anywhere, anytime. ONE PERSON? And he may have been a protester but there was no one there to protest.
Anyone see Janacek on Almanac, Friday? She said Lord Faris would have taken Al out at the DFL candidate had she been a candidate.

DFL convention, not candidate in the last post.

Perhaps because it’s mandatory boilerplate commentary? It’s almost as if analysts are required by law to say that. It’s meaningless & should be discounted.

How many voters even know who Betty McCollum is? Is Jacobs, from his extensive pollling and research, able to identify one single voter in Minnesota who is influenced by anything Betty thinks or says?

Or is Larry just making things up?

That’s right hiram, Betty is a loser; a nobody.

God, I love the sound of Democrats chopping each other to pieces in the morning, it sounds like….victory.

Betty is just a back bench Congresswoman, and while that isn’t quite the same thing as being a loser, that doesn’t count for much in this world.

I throw this out to everyone. Ask the person next to you right now if he or she knows who Betty McCollum is, and what she does for a living. My guess is they won’t know.
