MDE EXCLUSIVE: GOVERNOR PAWLENTY “INCLINED” TO RUN FOR THIRD TERM

By Michael B. Brodkorb | September 6, 2008

According to a high-level source, Governor Tim Pawlenty is “inclined” to run for a third term in 2010.  I can’t be more of a fan of Governor Pawlenty and I was ecstatic when I spoke with my source earlier today. A formal announcement on Governor Pawlenty’s re-election plans will not likely come until 2009.

A long-list of Democrats, including Congressman Tim Walz, are thinking about running for governor.  I bet most A-level candidates won’t consider running for long if Governor Pawlenty decides to seek a third term.

Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for more information on this developing story.

    1. Is he inclined to run for:

    “third-term”
    “third” term
    “third term” or
    third term?

-2- Is MBB incline -to- use -too- many hypens, or not enough?

  2. DantheMan Says:

I think Tim Pawlenty is a very good Governor. This is coming from a moderate. If he ran again for a third term, I’d be absolutely thrilled.

  3. BILL Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 7:35 PM

If McCain wins, I say Pawlenty goes to D.C.

  4. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 7:39 PM

The democrats already expected to run, Susan Gaertner, Tom Bakk, Doug Peterson and Margaret Kelliher will not be deterred by this news. With the memory of McCain’s failed attempt to give George Bush a third term still fresh in the voters’ minds, the T-Paw era will come to a close one way or another in 2010.

  5. Mike Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 7:46 PM

McCain will probably have an offer for Pawlenty, but he would be wise to decline.

Where are Christine Todd Wittman Tommy Tompson Tom Ridge and the rest today?

  6. DantheMan Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 7:59 PM

I agree. There is nothing to gain politically for a young, up-and-comer to do a cabinet post instead of remain Governor. That, and I think being a Governor would be a heck of a lot more fun.

I don’t think any of the names you mentioned above make a dent on Pawlenty. Kelliher is the only one who has good name recognition, and I frankly think she will turn people off once they hear her on the stump. She has a style that doesn’t sit well — can’t put my finger on it.

I will say this — as a moderate, I’d like to see Pawlenty switch out Leutenants. Molnau is not the person I want in charge when T-Paw is nominated for the Presidency in 2012. That is when McCain will not see re-election because he has had such a productive 4-year term. I think a T-Paw, Geoff Michel ticket would go over well.

  7. BILL Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 8:49 PM

When Franken loses, he may try but then he would have to live in Minnesota, something he hasn’t done since childhood. He would have to buy winter clothing. Lot’s of things for Al to think about.

  8. el presidente Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Global warming must have really come Big Time to NYC. Or perhaps after Norm didn’t pass his draft physical he was really beaming and heated things up a bit.

  9. George Hayduke Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 10:48 PM

Of course you can’t be more of a fan of Pawlenty, Mikey. He signs your paychecks! Who are you f’en kidding anyway? Maybe MPR and the rest of the rubes in Twin Cities media think you’re just a little ol’ hobbyist blogger, but we know better you bought-and-paid for shill for any nutbag who will pay you.

  10. el presidente Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 10:49 PM

If Sarah throws in the towel, Paw Claws might join McCain.

  11. Barack McCain Says:
    September 6th, 2008 at 11:39 PM

I don’t think Pawlenty is as safe as you think. If it wasn’t for the Mike Hatch whore comment days before the ’06 election we’d be talking about Governor Hatch.

  12. Chestnut Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 12:18 AM

Indeed, Angry Mike Hatch was undermined by the whore comment; his running mate’s ignorance of E85; and his exploitation of human suffering which underscored that he wasn’t doing his job as A.G.

  13. Chestnut Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 12:25 AM

Hey el p. Joe Biden and Dick Cheney have something in common you’ll find interesting: 5 deferments from the draft.

But when Biden finally graduated… at the bottom of his law school class, and after nearly having been thrown out for plagiarism… he miraculously was rejected for having asthma.

Interesting that his asthma never kept him from playing football, being a lifeguard or having a rough and active childhood…. Amazing he discovered his childhood asthma in 1968.

    Curious, even.

  14. Right is RIGHT Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 12:50 AM

“If Sarah throws in the towel…” HAHAHAHA.

That statement explains alot in alot of different ways… If I win the Powerball tomorrow… HAHAHA

  15. Barack McCain Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 12:51 AM

Sp basically yout admit Minnesotans would have preferred a DFL governor in 2006, if not for Hatch’s whore comment. That doesn’t bode too well for Pawlenty if he runs again in 2010.

  16. DantheMan Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 6:47 AM

There was one other factor at play to explain why Hatch didn’t win in 06… The fact that his style of operation is to drag people down. Minnesotans hate that crap.

TPaw likes to rally people and is good at it.

  17. Tommy Johnson Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 7:35 AM

Rammer will destroy T-Paw in the Primary.

  18. BILL Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 8:47 AM

Best ad of the entire campaign.

  19. J. Ewing Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 9:00 AM

I would like to get through THIS presidential election before the next one starts, if that’s OK. Yes, Pawlenty is my favorite Republican Governor of Minnesota, so I’m glad he’s not the VP nominee. All other judgements withheld pending further developments.

  20. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 9:10 AM

My favorite part about the ad Bill posted is how it starts out talking about once in a generation leaders, but never once does it even imply that Norm Coleman may be a good leader. It just attacks Al Franken, suggesting he isn’t one either.

Is this Norm’s vision? I am less repugnant than my opponent?

  21. Walter Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 9:17 AM

Well that will explain why I keep getting fundraising letters from Tim. I guess he’s trying to keep that donor base intact for 2010.
As for Kehler let her be the nominee. She can’t even manage the House. How is going to manage the state?

  22. DantheMan Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 9:34 AM

IF Ramstad wants the Governor seat, it is his. But he doesn’t run if TPaw tries again.

Ramstad would be an incredible Governor. He is right at the political spectrum, just right of center, where he could get a ton accomplished.

  23. Chestnut Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 10:50 AM

“Sp basically yout admit Minnesotans would have preferred a DFL governor in 2006, if not for Hatch’s whore comment.”

Sure, the whore comment, in addition to having a brain-dead running mate and a long-track record as a partisan asshole, and incompetent AG. You bet, in concert with all those things, the whore comment didn’t help.

You’re also retarded, aren’t you BM.

  24. Chestnut Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 12:34 PM

I also think it’s a wild stretch to say Minnesotan’s would have preferred a DFL governor. They clearly didn’t.

  25. Tommy Johnson Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Chestnut, CLEARLY Minnesotan’s would have preferred a DFL Governor; it’s HATCH Minnesotans didn’t want.

Damn, you got another case of dumb(cheney) goin’ on today, Chestnut….

  26. BILL Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Tommy may be right— and Hatch certainly has more bonafides than Franken. Think about it.

Just got a call from friend of friend who called for Obama yesterday and they polled the senate primary.

    56 AF
    44 PLF

With a decent republican turnout for PLF we can send AF packing.

  27. Mike Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 2:23 PM

The DFL won everything else by double digets, without the comment Hatch wins by 5 at best. We haven’t elected a Democrat in most of your lifetimes because we know the result.

Stop spending MY money you pathetic morons.

  28. FiercelyIndependent Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Tommy is correct – Gov. Pawlenty was the only GOP candidate to win statewide. Without Hatch and Dutcher’s meltdowns, it would have been a clean sweep for the DFL.

So, does the GOP recognize the writing on the wall, clean house, dump party leadership, and begin reaching out to those inclined to lean conservative?

    Of course not.

If Ramstad doesn’t run, the GOP will be shut out in 2010.

  29. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 2:53 PM

If Pawlenty wants to run, Ramstad won’t be allowed to. Not by any existing rule or law, but by a republican party which does everything it can to eliminate choice for the voters, so as not to confuse them. That is why this year, Jack Shepard is your only alternative to do-nothing Norm. I have to believe there are plenty of republicans, real republicans, who would have like to have a different option on the ballot come Tuesday.

  30. BILL Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 3:53 PM

    Leroy,

Both parties try to eliminate choice. That is how they maintain power.

  31. el presidente Says:
    September 7th, 2008 at 10:12 PM

“Stop spending MY money you pathetic morons.”
    —————————————
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Stop spending your ["MY"] money to:

~Bail out Fanny Mae & Freddie Mac but, let the leadership collect thousands of dollars?

~Allow Sarah Palin to CLEVERLY broadcast over the “rented/sold” airwaves [protected by paid police & guards] make people THINK that she sold a luxury airplane on e-bay, when she did no such thing?

~Not fund the Alaskan Bridge to Nowhere but, give the [Bridge] money ($) to Alaska anyway?

Please use another name or add something.

  34. Swiftee Says:
    September 8th, 2008 at 10:30 AM

    Say, LP?

What have you to say about Biden’s five (5= 2.5*2; 10-5; 2+3) military deferments? Do you think he was dissapointed to finally have to fall back on the ol’ asthma excuse to keep himself from serving in the military?

  35. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 8th, 2008 at 11:50 AM

I am pretty sure the White House republican have surrendered the deferment high ground already.

  36. Tommy Johnson Says:
    September 8th, 2008 at 12:07 PM

    Say, Leroy?.

Scrotee’s simply proving bootlickers don’t know the definition of “ChickenHawk.”

Then again, Scrotee is indeed a “simple”…
