By Michael B. Brodkorb | September 9, 2008

This is priceless. A new Paulsen for Congress billboard went up today on top of the building where the 3rd CD DFL coordinated campaign office is located on Highway 12/Interstate 394.

This is a reminder that I am a part-time research consultant to Erik Paulsen for Congress. Minnesota Democrats Exposed is my personal blog and it is not created, endorsed, sponsored, or authorized by any political party, candidate, or candidate’s committee.

Michael- I saw that today as I drove by and I was about to send you a tip to try to get a photo of it. Looks like the deed’s already been done. It’s priceless. Gotta love it!
September 9th, 2008 at 4:59 PM
RAMSTAD is on the billboard??!?
O
M
G
They really should have put a bigger ring thru Paulsen’s nose….
September 9th, 2008 at 5:01 PM
Hey DFL, get ready to pull the Franken sign.
He is going down tonight!
PLF 51
Franken 46
Others 3
You saw it first on MDE, as usual.
Anyone not voted yet, get out there and do your duty! Think about watching Al explain this loss.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:12 PM
Still using the “part-time” “research consultant” line? I assume that at the rate you’re being paid you’re running the whole Paulsen campaign.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Oh, that is perfect!
*laughing*
September 9th, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Location, Location, Location?
Does anyone even drive on Highway 12 anymore given the horrible construction?
September 9th, 2008 at 6:17 PM
Is anyone harping on Palin’s inexperience allowed to vote for Madia?
September 9th, 2008 at 6:36 PM
Brutal
September 9th, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Isn’t it a bit late for Paulsen to be starting his campaign?
September 9th, 2008 at 7:00 PM
Let’s see.
Leads Madia in total funds raised
Leads Madia in cash on hand
Leads Madia in the polls.
Who’s late?
September 9th, 2008 at 7:38 PM
Now that is funny.
September 9th, 2008 at 7:41 PM
Unlike Paulsen, who needs to use his $107,000 special interest money to buy billboards, Madia’s grassroots supporters have put up well over 1000 lawn signs on supporters’ (and voters’) lawns all over the district in the past week, put in hundreds of hours talking to their neighbors about Madia, and are having amazing results by the person-to-person contact.
In my neighborhood alone, Madia signs have gone up on lawns that previously only voted republican. The energy and individual support is amazing and more than I’ve seen in any other campaign I’ve observed.
Grassroots will prevail!!!
September 9th, 2008 at 7:41 PM
There’s no way around it: That is funny.
Also, Scott, Madia’s running for the House of Representatives, not the second in line for leader of the free world (where the first in line would be the oldest 1st term President in our nation’s history). But thanks for pointing out that Madia and Palin have close to the same experience!

BILLBOARDS FROM $107,000 SPECIAL INTEREST MONEY

“In my neighborhood alone, Madia signs have gone up on lawns that previously only voted republican.”
Let me guess, the signs are all in the lawns of vacant houses. LOL!
September 9th, 2008 at 7:56 PM
“Leads Madia in total funds raised
Leads Madia in cash on hand”
Considering Madia has beaten Paulsen the last two reporting periods and Paulsen and paying the likes of MBB ~90k / year I wouldn’t jump the gun on either of these statements. Even so, the gap was insubstantial, and, pretty pathetic considering Paulsen had about 6 months of a jump on Madia who had to raise money (and spend) during a contested party endorsement.
“Leads Madia in the polls.”
Polls plural? I’ve seen a single poll where it was a statistical dead heat. Likely because Paulsen isn’t doing anything (no updated on his web page, no events listed, and no press releases?)
September 9th, 2008 at 8:15 PM
Who is Paulsen?
Isn’t it obvious? He is the one who is NOT Rep. Jim Ramstad.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:28 PM
“Let me guess, the signs are all in the lawns of vacant houses.”
Chestnut: You mean all the vacant houses that the current administration (and the one you likely would vote to continue the current administration’s policies) has vacated through horrid economic policy? Yeah, let’s get 4 more years of that!
September 9th, 2008 at 8:41 PM
“Madia’s grassroots supporters”
Most of Madia’s money is coming from out of the district and out of the state. Is he importing his supporters too?
The only thing he’s leading Paulsen in is in accepting PAC money.
.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:15 PM
So what. You get points for ‘snaps’. We still control the Congress and will have a bigger lead after thse elections.
As I’ve said before, its a win-win year for Democrats. I’ll let you Repubs sweat the small stuff(he got a billboard- YIPEE!)
September 9th, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Those people in New York City will have to representatives in Congress, based on Madia’s campaign donation patterns: 1) Their own congressperson, and 2) Madia.
But wait — who will represent the 3rd?

Synonyms for Obama-esque “community organizer:
Thug.
Shakedown artist.
Ineffectual rabble-rouser.
Left-wing fraudsters.
They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and illegal and criminal records.
It ain’t about the black or white. It’s all about the green.

I think I’d sleep better at night knowing that my campaign had thousands of committed supporters with modest lawn signs, rather than having a few big hog billboards and hoping my supporters would care.
Oh yeah, it’s also great to see the Madia signs right where the Ramstad signs used to be!
Madia: Building the movement brick by brick.
September 10th, 2008 at 6:37 AM
I’m just not seeing all these alleged Madia lawn signs. I have just seen one, it was one of those cheap looking bag signs. Madia must figure he’s not going to win, and doesn’t want to invest money in re-usable signs.
Erik got a break this election when they nominated Madia, who doesn’t seem to have the local support that Bonoff would have had. It is smart of Paulsen to buy the re-usable lawn signs, they will save him money for his re-election campaign next election cycle. He may need that savings if the DFL endorse a tougher candidate like Bonoff.

[...] Will the voters be impressed? No one can say, but it’s not surprising to see that his former spokesman [...]
September 10th, 2008 at 9:14 AM
Lots of signs went up in my part of the district. Just love driving down the street and seeing those friendly signs! Signs represent lots of committed voters, as opposed to billboards that just represent spending big money.
Democrats voted 2 to 1 in yesterday’s primary. So where are all of those republicans that couldn’t find the time to get to the polls to show a symbolic support for Paulsen? And why is it there are more votes for Coleman than Paulsen in the 3rd?! Obviously there are republicans in the 3rd that don’t like Erik…
US Congressman Ashwin Madia…sounds great!

As a person in the fireplace market I can scratch DJ’s off my list – why a business would put up political signs is beyond me.
September 10th, 2008 at 9:45 AM
Shades of the 2005 legislative acrimony. As Erik Paulsen seeks to bathe in Jim Ramstad’s shadow, Paulsen’s recedes into the darkness. The mismatch is striking. Ramstad reached across the aisle to author moderate, common-sense Congressional legislation. In contrast, Paulsen’s leadership promoted a conservative agenda rife with wedge issues and petty, small-minded parochialism that ultimately turned the lights out in Minnesota government in 2005. This is not the leadership that Minnesota needs. I challenge Mr. Paulsen to stand on his own record and stop lurking in the shadow of a true moderate like Jim Ramstad. Sometimes when a person sings his own praises, it is difficult to get the right pitch and Paulsen’s record is out of tune with the moderate voter in the 3rd Congressional District.

“As a person in the fireplace market I can scratch DJ’s off my list – why a business would put up political signs is beyond me.”
What a stupid comment. Did it dawn on you, dip shit, that DJ’s is renting the retail space?
September 10th, 2008 at 2:31 PM
Nominal fee and Chestnut….DJ’s doesn’t occupy the space under their sign and doesn’t own the building. Why not stop by the CD3 coordinated campaign hq and pick up a real sign (Madia for Congress) and stick it in your yard, then you too can be part of the winning team come November.

Every DFLer I know seems to complain that this race would have been in the bag with Sen. Terri Bonoff. Madia will lose and lose bad. Keep playing your fiddles though.
September 10th, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Ashwin Madia has great admiration for Senator Bonoff and her supporters, as he expressed when he accepted the DFL nomination.
It’s too bad you don’t know more than that one DFLer. If you did, you would know the DFL is united and ready to debate Mr. Paulsen on the issues that matter to middle class families in the 3rd District.
Ashwin Madia is prepared to lead.
