TOTAL EMBARRASSMENT FOR TEAM FRANKEN: FRANKEN REJECTED BY 35% OF DFL PRIMARY VOTERS

By Michael B. Brodkorb | September 9, 2008

Boy, was I wrong. I thought it was reasonable to ask if Al Franken would get less than 90 percent in the primary election. I thought Franken would get over 90 percent.  But Franken got less than 90 percent and 80 percent…he even got less than 70 percent.  As of 11:49 p.m., Franken has only received 65 percent of the vote in the DFL primary election.

Tonight’s primary results are a total embarrassement for Team Franken. Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for more information on Team Franken’s embarrassing evening.

    Say, Michael?

What were the results in Paulsen’s primary contest?

  2. Tommy Johnson Says:
    September 9th, 2008 at 11:57 PM

    Oh, wait – I mean Coleman’s primary.

  3. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 9th, 2008 at 11:59 PM

What happened to Norm in Senate Districts 14,15 and 16?

Jack Shepard, a convicted felon who didn’t campaign, and who is not able to set foot in the country without being arrested took more than 10 percent of the republican vote in those districts.

That seems to be a much bigger story than a well funded candidate splitting votes within the party after campaigning valiantly on the DFL side.

  4. Tommy Johnson Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 12:06 AM

    Jack Sheppard lost??!?

    There goes half of Michael’s google-ad income….

  5. Yoni C. Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 12:30 AM

what percent to Ole Savior get?

  6. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 12:36 AM

Fun Fact: More republicans voted for the exiled crackpot running against Norm Coleman than voted for all of the independence party candidates COMBINED.

  7. mrw Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 12:58 AM

I just reviewed the results for the CD1 primary. Looks like RPM-endorsed candidate Brian Davis is at 66.2%. Total embarrassment for Team Davis and the Republican Party? You can’t have it both ways, Mike. Either Franken and Davis are embarrassments, or both succeeded with supermajorities in hotly contested primaries.

I say, success for both Davis and Franken. But by your standards, Republican Party endorsed candidate Brian Davis is an embarrassment who was rejected by 35% of Republican primary voters. I can’t wait to see your spin on this one.

  8. mrw Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 1:01 AM

By the way, Mike: In your pre-primary expectations setting post, you set the line at 90% for Franken. Today, Michele Bachmann fell below that line, along with Brian Davis. Should we put Bachmann in the embarrassment category next to Brian Davis?

  9. mrw Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 1:06 AM

Looks like the non-partisan newspaper The Hill agrees with my analysis. According to this article in The Hill, Franken “had no problem” and Davis “easily dispatched Day.”

As I said before, I can’t wait to see your spin on this one.

  10. Aaron Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 1:30 AM

    LOL. Look at two numbers:

For some reason there were *WAY* more people voting DFL than Republican…. and… well over 12,000 people decided a felon living in Italy is better than Norm Coleman for the Republican ticket — even if his positions are “100% similar” to Al Franken? HUH?

So yeah, to say that this is an “embarrassment” is actually an embarrassment for MDE for trying to fabricate that story.

  11. Patrick Black Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 5:47 AM

I THINK WE NEED TO ASK THE QUESTION:

IF CIRESI RAN IN THE PRIMARY, WOULD HE HAVE WON THE PRIMARY?

It’s clear the reason Ciresi didn’t enter the race is because he didn’t want to go down a negative battle with Franken. However, judging from these numbers, it looks like Ciresi would not have had to. I doubt Faris’ attacks made any difference—it appears that the voters are cemented in their opinion.

If Ciresi pumped a million bucks into a primary run, and ran a full campaign in which he was positive, and not attacking, I think voters would have jumped to him as a great alternative to Franken.

No one actually liked Faris, even those who voted for her. The 30% of Dems who voted for her voted in protest of Franken and not because they like Faris. If Ciresi entered the race, I think he would have taken her thirty percent, and at least twenty percent of those who voted for Franken.

What a shame, we could have won the Senate race.

  12. Average Joe Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 6:21 AM

Sadly what this shows is that 65% of the state’s active DFL are willing to vote for a potty-mouthed, dirty-minded, porn-writing, admitted tax cheat. As I’ve said many times, liberals have no conscience and this vote proves it yet one more time.

  13. Mike Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 6:22 AM

You thought 90% huh? Come on, let those other guys play dumb. I goto this blog because it’s above this kind of crap.

Franken’s gonna lose no matter how the primary results spin.

  14. Rubsy Bailes Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 6:47 AM

Franken winning sure says a lot about Minnesota politics. It seems the more scummy the pick the better the chance he or she wins. Franken is a disgrace. I’m not from Minnesota but even if I was and I didn’t like Coleman, whom I know very little about, I still wouldn’t vote for Al Franken. He is a certifiable hate monger. I knew a little bit about your Paul Wellstone, I might have disagreed with him on a lot of things but the guy had character pure and simple and was respected by both sides of the aisle just as much as Ronald Reagan was respected on both sides as well. You’ll always have your detractors, that’s politics. But Al Franken? Give me a break, this little man is full of rage and hate just like most of those in Hollyweird. It is sad when someone decides to move back into a State they didn’t care much for in the past and decides to run for elective office. I didn’t like it when Hillary Clinton did it although I did support her over Obama. Now I’m voting for McCain. I’m tired of women getting beat up on. Obama’s people attacked Hillary and Geraldine Ferraro and now Palin. Franken too doesn’t respect women. My motto is anyone but Franken. If it means Coleman so be it or anyone else capable of beating this slime master.

  15. loris Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 6:49 AM

As I said, it will be funny to watch Team Angry Al try to spin this miserable showing. Aaron proves me correct.

  16. surly Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 6:50 AM

10% of Republican voters embarassed themselves by voting for the crackpot on their ticket.

Meanwhile, 65% of Democrat voters embarassed themselves by voting for the crackpot on their ticket.

  17. Chestnut Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 7:32 AM

I thought 90 percent was optimistic, but listening to the ilk of Tommy and Leroy, anything short of 99 percent support for Franken is devastating.

I suppose NOW all the Democrats will line up lock-step with their boy Franken? … probably not. That was one hell of a protest vote against Al Franken and the DFL degenerates who endorsed him.

It’s kinda cute, I suppose, that the psycho Jack Shepard was able to get 12,000 votes… although, those 12,000 are the same idiots who voted for Ron Paul.

Still, Coleman shouldn’t have too bad a time in November. I’ll buy whoever speculated that the election would come down to 48/44/8 Coleman/Franken/Barkley.

  18. jbenson2 Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 8:11 AM

    Surly – great comment

I am one of the Republicans who crossed over.

With apologies to Shakespeare and Macbeth Act 5, scene 1, 26–40

    Doctor:
What is it he does now? Look how he rubs his hands.

    Gentlewoman:
It is an accustom’d action with him, to seem thus
washing his hands. I have known him continue in this a quarter of
    an hour.

    Sir Benson:
    Yet here’s a spot.

    Doctor:
Hark, he speaks. I will set down what comes from him, to
satisfy my remembrance the more strongly.

    Sir Benson:
Out, damn’d spot! out, I say!—One; two: why, then
’tis time to do’t.—Hell is murky.—Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier, and
afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our
pow’r to accompt?—Yet who would have thought the Democrat party to
have had so much blood in them?

  19. Michael B. Brodkorb Says:

Patrick Timmons/MRW: Since I have you on my blog, I’d like to ask you about videos – videos posted to YouTube during the 2006 elections.

  20. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 8:35 AM

So, given these results, it is apparent that Coleman, Walz and Tinklenberg all are destined to win this fall.

    Good to know.

  21. JR Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 8:38 AM

The DFL has had a history of hotly contested primaries. Look at the 1998 “My Three Sons” Gubernatorial primary. Look at the 2002 Senate primary, where Mark Dayton beat the DFL endorsed candidate–WITH ONLY 41% of the vote.

Although Skip went on to lose, Mark Dayton won his Senate seat against an incumbent Republican in a Republican year.

I appreciate your background as a campaign communications guy, but this charge just doesn’t really make sense given the context.

  22. PlymouthDem Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 8:51 AM

This is so stupid. I doubt many if any GOP voters voted for Shepard, and, I doubt anywhere near 35% of DFL voters actually voted for Lord Faris.

Voters were crossing the lines. To make any more of this is ridiculous.

    Nice try though Michael.

  23. ranger Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 9:15 AM

Lord Faris actually carried 4 counties…big hole in Al’s boat. Lord Faris pays $3 or $4 a vote and Al pays maybe $800 a vote?

  24. mrw Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Mike — I realize you’re obsessed with videos of kids imitating Star Wars characters and lip-syncing to Moldovan pop hits, but let’s stick to the topic at hand.

  25. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Jack Shepard, a convicted felon who is hiding out from the law in Italy and did not campaign at all for the seat got over 10 percent of the vote in 19 counties.

Since Michael is so obsessed with the 90 percent line, I think Norm should begin to worry now when over 25 percent of counties went out of their way to piss on his leg.

  26. Michael B. Brodkorb Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Patrick Timmons/MRW: This is my blog and I determine the focus. Do you wish to comment on campaign commercials posted to YouTube during the 2006 elections?

  27. el presidente Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Mike Ciresi [still] has many good choices from which he can select.

The settlement that he negotiated against Big Tobacco was HUGE for the State of Minnesota. Part of that settlement continues ANNUALLY as long as the tobacco companies continue to sell tobacco products in Minnesota.

Keep a running total of the money that has come in from the tobacco companies from the State of Minnesota…

…and compare and contrast that with…

…a running total of the money ($$$) that will be spent in the race for US Senate in the State of Minnesota for this 2007-2008 election cycle.

A person living on the European Continent, in the country of Italy, gets 10% of a North American Continent, country of United States, State of Minnesota, primary vote!

  28. Troy Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 11:10 AM

The only reason the Democratic Senate primary was contested AT ALL (much less “hotly”) is the poor quality of the DFL endorsed candidate.

  29. JR Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 12:53 PM

It’s not unusual to have a contested DFL primary. We don’t run lockstep. The real test is to see whether the party unites behind its candidate now. I think people will be considerably more likely to vote for Al Franken, now that Norm Coleman is the other opponent.

I also want to point out an error in previous post. Mark Dayton won the 2000 primary, not the 2002.

  30. Chestnut Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 1:36 PM

“Look at the 2002 Senate primary, where Mark Dayton beat the DFL endorsed candidate–WITH ONLY 41% of the vote. ”

Get your history straight. Dayton and Coleman didn’t go to the Senate in the same year. Dayton won in 2000, which was not really a “Republican year.”

    It was a neutral year.

  31. Pete Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 1:37 PM

JR, so Leroy says Democrats do “run lockstep” and you say they don’t.

I know several Democrats who won’t vote for Al. Some have said they will vote for Norm and some haven’t decided if they will even bother to vote or not since their two national choices, Franken and Obama, are not a good option for them.

  32. Left is RIGHT Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Boy, was I wrong. I thought it was reasonable to ask if Norm Coleman would get more votes than Al Franken in the primary election since Al actually had an opponent who campaigned in Minnesota. I thought Coleman would get more votes than Franken. But Franken got over 25 percent more votes than Coleman!!!!!

Left is Right, you should change your handle to Left is Clueless.

  34. Pete Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Left is Right – except in your case I guess. The DFL is so divided. Apparently that is the national strategy for the Democrats. “Divide and Fail” is the Democrat slogan now.

Nice try but the Republicans had no reason to go to the polls – except to vote PLF. :-)

  35. Ritch Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 6:51 PM

Well…at least the 130,000 Coleman supporters who showed up to vote yesterday was an improvement over the 60,000 who voted in the Republican caucus in February.

About the same number of people voted for Jack Shepard yesterday as voted for McCain in February.

Keep up the good work at getting the vote out.

  36. Kathy Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 7:38 PM

Considering that there were 4 other names on the DFL ballot besides Franken’s, 65% is pretty damn good. That’s the lion’s share of votes. That means that the other 35% was divied up between the other 4.

Of course, it is your MO, Michael, to exploit the negative in any positive situation.

  37. Pete Says:
    September 10th, 2008 at 8:50 PM

Kathy, of the remaining 35% PTF received 29.71%. Spin it how you want but that leaves 5% for the other 3 candidates to share.

I really don’t see anything positive in your argument.
