BREAKING NEWS FROM POLITICO: “FRANKEN HELPS CRAFT MCCAIN ‘SNL’ SKIT”

By Michael Brodkorb | September 20, 2008

This is unbelievable: Team Franken has been caught lying about Al Franken’s role in crafting a skit for “Saturday Night Live” tonight. Unbelievable.

###

“Al Franken, the former ‘Saturday Night Live’ star now running in a high-profile Senate race in Minnesota, helped craft the opening sketch mocking John McCain that is slated to kick off the NBC comedy show tonight, according to two well-placed sources inside the network.

Franken, who hasn’t been a staff writer on the show for 13 years, ‘phoned in’ a spoof of McCain recording campaign ads in an edit booth, said an NBC source. Seth Meyers, the show’s current head writer, wrote it, but the sketch was hatched by Franken, a longtime liberal satirist and comedian.

An SNL insider said that, as of the Wednesday script read-through, Franken was the ‘credited writer with Meyers’ on the opening sketch. Show veteran Darrell Hammond is to play McCain.

Franken’s input to the show blindsided his campaign staff, who have been forced to explain away some of the more crass and profane parts of his past writing and acting that have been used as fodder against him in a state known for its polite manners.

A spokeswoman for Franken, Colleen Murray, first said the Democratic Senate candidate ‘didn’t write anything for SNL tonight.’ But pressed if he was involved in the show or had been in contact with staff members, Murray admitted Franken had a role in tonight’s program.” Source: The Politico, September 20, 2008

I don’t find it objectionable that Al Franken wrote some ad-hoc stuff for SNL, but fact that he or his staff can’t find it in them to tell the truth is truly objectionable.

What’s that saying about “A Weasel Leopard Can’t Change His Spots”? This fits in so perfectly with the ads Coleman has been running about angry Al’s out-of-control outbursts. Stuart Smalley – the gift that keeps on giving!

It certainly looks like Franken has been reading the tea leaves. He’s decided not to quit his day job so he can make a fast exit to Hollywood when Coleman wins the election.

Any bets on whether Franken will report the extra income from this SNL hit piece to the IRS and state authorities?

It’s always the lying that gets you in trouble. This story is devastating for Team Franken.

  4. Chestnut Says:
    September 20th, 2008 at 10:35 PM

I just watched the skit… it was mildly amusing, but mostly it was stupid… kinda like Franken’s candidacy.

  5. Michael B. Brodkorb Says:
    September 20th, 2008 at 10:38 PM

The skit contained references to Osama bin Laden and pedophiles. Team Franken has to be embarrassed.

  6. Jim Says:
    September 20th, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Looks like Angry AL is just can’t PEDOPHILES off his mind. They keep showing up in his skits.

  7. Payload Says:
    September 20th, 2008 at 10:52 PM

In fairness, can we have a conservative writer do the next SNL skit lampooning Obama? Better yet, Franken?

    I vote for Mark Steyn

Payload – that’s a good suggestion about lampooning Obama on SNL.

I think over the past few months, angry Al has been doing an excellent job of lampooning Franken.

    September 20th, 2008 at 11:27 PM

    who cares?

  11. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 20th, 2008 at 11:57 PM

I guess Al didn’t get the memo stating that talking about the mastermind of 9/11 was off limits. The President’s total disinterest in looking for him makes me wonder how serious Saddam Heussein would have been hunted if he had managed to develop closer financial ties to the Carlyle Group.

  12. Chestnut Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 12:36 AM

The skit is just more proof that Al Franken’s not that bright.

  13. Ed Kohler Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 1:36 AM

Sounds like a slow news day at MDE. It’s truly a stretch to call this newsworthy.

  14. Aaron Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 1:46 AM

Hilarious that you’re trying to twist this into a negative on Franken. You Coleman supporters are desperate.

  15. Chestnut Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 3:46 AM

Aaron, I tend to agree that this is probably another case where MDE is overstating the issue… but don’t you think it’s kinda sad that 1) Franken’s reminding folks how unfunny he is; and 2) that his campaign is left uninformed/spinning the matter?

On that later point, I think it’s kinda sad that Franken’s 50th spokesperson is so ham-handed and unable to think on her feet. Apparently Franken, the imported candidate, can’t import good help either.

  16. plymouthDem Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 7:39 AM

Campaign Ill informed maybe but where again is there any lying. Is it your position that anytime the press secretary for president doesn’t know everything going on they are lying?

Besides it sounds like his role was incredibly limited. Nice try Michael.

  17. Average Joe Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 7:41 AM

I just watched the “skit”. I can see why they lied about it because it’s not funny, it’s really stupid and fits right in with SNL crap from the last 20 years – idiotic. If I were Angry Al I wouldn’t want my name attached it it either.

  18. Payload Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 8:42 AM

I Just watched it too. What a yawner. The skit will be forgotten by tonight.

  19. Mike Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 8:55 AM

Have they ever did an anti liberal skit? Oh sure they made fun of the Clinton’s but never the policy.

  20. Michael B. Brodkorb Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 9:15 AM

Aaron: You are desperate. This story is unbelievable: Team Franken has been caught lying about Al Franken’s role in crafting a skit for “Saturday Night Live” tonight.

The skit contained references to Osama bib Laden and pedophiles. What a dumb move by Franken.

  21. PlymouthDem Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 9:57 AM

    Michael,

I’m sorry, but you are just dumb. Where is the lie? The press secretary didn’t know he had a phone conversation with Loren Michaels where he said “hey, this would be funny.”

Clearly, Team Bush has been lying over and over when their press secretaries didn’t know what was going on behind closed doors.

And, I love how you are making a huge deal about a skit who’s focus is McCAIN lying. Surely you are outraged by McCain’s lies too.

    What a dolt.

  22. mustang09 Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Isn’t NBC giving an in kind donation to either the Democratic party or to the Obama campaign by allowing a Senate candidate to write what essentially was an Obama campaign ad disguised as a “comedy” skit? When a candidate writes an editorial, it’s bylined. Franken’s involvement should have been disclosed immediately, when the skit ran.

  23. jbenson2 Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 11:50 AM

    Franken lied and leftists cried.

  24. Swiftee Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Lies and pedophilia….yup, that’s got Porn-O-Rama Franken written all over it.

I wonder which state Franken will decide not to pay taxes in this time?
