By Michael B. Brodkorb | September 21, 2008

You can add Colleen Murray to your list of Team Franken liars:

“A spokeswoman for Franken, Colleen Murray, first said the Democratic Senate candidate ‘didn’t write anything for SNL tonight.’ But pressed if he was involved in the show or had been in contact with staff members, Murray admitted Franken had a role in tonight’s program.” Source: The Politico, September 20, 2008

Democrats loved the skit. Republicans hated it.

How, again, does this hurt Franken?

Democrats Idiots loved the skit. Republicans everyone else hated it.

How, again, does this hurt Franken?

Fixed…I guess we don’t really need to think too much on which category you fall into.

  3. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 12:57 PM

Wow, BigB. With comedy like this rumbling around your head, it is no wonder you didn’t like the skit.

  4. ansel Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 1:21 PM

this does not hurt franken at all…..for his job after the election. he needs to keep his skills as a crass comedian honed so he can find a job in november.

Michael apparently is in his “post it 10 times and maybe people will actually think it’s important” mode.

Coleman is probably giddy today actually thinking he can go another day without talking about how he did nothing in 6 years in the seante. Only, no one (not even Chestnut) cares about this–especially since all the entire news cycle is focused on how republicans managed to F up the economy by historical proportions.

  6. kathy Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 1:54 PM

This week’s skit shows the comedic genius that is Al Franken, who I have gotten to know as well as Franni over the last 2 years.

If the Republicans are outraged over this skit, which was halarious, it shows that the Republicans take themsmelves way too seriously and cannot laugh at themselves when other see them as they are not.

It’s about time SNL do some skits on the Big Fat Idiot also known as the Comedian Ruch Limbaugh. Now there is a political figure that invites ridicule with his own skits than anyone else I can think of.

Tina Fey’s portrayal of Sarah Palin in the season opener was spot on. Brilliant writing and acting!!!

  7. Aaron Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Wow, she lied? Did you verify this? LOL.

    The skit is “racist”?

You people are so shameless, but it’s laughable at the same time. It’s an embarrassment that this is the only thing you can talk about. You’re desperate.

  8. jbenson2 Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 2:57 PM

    Hey Kathy,

I along with a lot of Minnesotans would love to see the “comedic genius” Franken work full time for SNL as soon as possible.

But take it from Harry Reid, Franken does not want to cross swords with Rush Limbaugh.

Other people have regretted opposing Limbaugh:
    * Congressman “Little Dick” Gephardt
    * Congressman Dan “Rosty” Rostenkowski
    * Senator Jim “Daficit” Sasser
    * Mayor David “General” Dinkins of NYC
    * House Speaker Tom Foley
    * House Speaker “Fort Worthless” Jim Wright
    * Governor Mike “The Loser” Dukakis
    * Governor Mario “The Pious” Cuomo
    * Senator Walter F. “Mondull” Mondale
    * Senator Tom “Puff” Daschle
    * Senator Lincoln “RINO” Chafee
    * Dan “Forged Documents” Rather

    These people have learned that
You Don’t Tug On Superman’s Cape
You Don’t Spit Into The Wind
You Don’t Pull The Mask Off The Old Lone Ranger
And You Don’t Mess Around With Rush.

  9. Aaron Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 3:04 PM

    Benson-

I guess you forgot that Franken not only has no problem crossing swords with Rush publicly, he wrote a book dedicated to how big of a lying, fraud Rush is.

  10. Greg Lang Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 3:18 PM

This SNL skit was slow and boring versus last weeks Sarah Palin script which was genuinely funny.

  11. Average Joe Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 3:42 PM

This week’s skit shows the comedic genius that is Al Franken, who I have gotten to know as well as Franni over the last 2 years.

What’s your favorite flavor, cherry or grape Kool-aid?

  12. jbenson2 Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 3:50 PM

No, I did not forget about the book. But you make a good argument that Franken should be added to the list.

The book failed almost as badly as Franken’s performance on Air America Radio. I guess Franken was slightly distracted with other issues when they caught him with his hand in the “financial” cookie jar.

  13. Walter Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Kathy lets looked at the skit:

    * It made fun that John Mccain can’t use the internet because of his war injuries (oh without adding in the explanation). Where’s the funny there?

    * It accused the Republicans of not wanting universal health care because we will give it to Bin Laden. No we’re opposed to universal health care because we want to try to have people and business to pay. We’re against universal health care because it causes rationing. We’re against universal health care because the people who don’t have health care plans right now (a claim of failure according to democrats) are people who can get government help and guarenteed emergency room care or healthy people who don’t want to buy a product they don’t want. Where’s the funny?

    * It accuses the Mccain campaign of not running on issues. Just videos. Apparently what Democrats think is a funny joke doesn’t realize that Obama has been running as a celebrity. Once again where’s the funny?

Of course what I find funny is that Al apparently already realizes that he isn’t getting elected so he’s already looking for a new job.

    Michael B Brodkorb-

    This is not a lie:

“A spokeswoman for Franken, Colleen Murray, first said the Democratic Senate candidate ‘didn’t write anything for SNL tonight.’ But pressed if he was involved in the show or had been in contact with staff members, Murray admitted Franken had a role in tonight’s program.”

Al Franken did not write anything in regards to SNL that aired last night. Did Al Franken have a phone conversation? Sure. To say that Colleen Murray was “lying” is not true. I expect that you correct this post.

  15. jbenson2 Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 4:57 PM

Aaron seems to be down to picking the nits. Al Franken did not write anything in regards to SNL.

Araon says Al Franken did not write anything for SNL, but let’s take a look at the politico artilce.

The headline “Franken helps craft McCain ‘SNL’ skit”

    and

Franken “phoned in” a spoof of McCain.

    and

…the sketch was hatched by Franken, a longtime liberal satirist and comedian.

    and

An SNL insider said that, as of the Wednesday script read-through, Franken was the “credited writer with Meyers” on the opening sketch. [credited writer???? does that mean write? hmmmm!]

    and

Franken’s input to the show blindsided his campaign staff,

    Oh, and by the way…
One of the definitions of write is to cause to be apparent or unmistakable: Honesty is written on his face.

    (Definitely not applicable to Franken)

  16. Cash N. Carey Says:

Well my semnombulent dolt, here’s a tip: To the genuine “reality based” voter, this proves that Al Franken, the Senate candidate is the same, exact pig that Al “all the world’s a rape joke” Franken was.

Say, Aairhead? This one’s for you:

    Walter,
When you take literal view of of a comedy skit from the longest running show of comedy skits in American television, well you show us why Republican don’t have a sense of humor.

You really are kind of stupid aren’t you?

Franken lost nothing with Democrats and Coleman gained nothing with Independents. 43 days from the election year and the Senior Senator can’t put this one away. All of the shit thrown at Franken all summer and fall, yet he’s still in this. That doesn’t spell trouble for Al, it’s Norm who should and obviously is worried.

This race will be determined by Dean Barkley. He’s polling 14%.

  19. FiercelyIndependent Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 6:07 PM

This race will be determined by Norm Coleman, whose gutter politics pushes Dean Barkley’s numbers up. Many independents and moderates normally inclined to vote for moderate republican – which Coleman arguably is – will vote independent.

    DJZ:

I have a sense of humor.

Just explain why it’s funny to mock a man who can’t type easily on a computer like us?

How about just for fun we meet, I take a hammer and break every finger so you can’t type, and than I joke how DJZ is do discouraged he doesn’t want to use the internet anymore. Now mind you I won’t do that. But the point is that Franken, Obama, and you liberal Democrats think lets laugh at John Mccain because he doesn’t send emails!

Come on DJZ since you have a sense of humor and I don’t how is that funny?

    From the AP:

Franken campaign spokeswoman Colleen Murray said Sunday that Franken had a phone conversation last week with SNL creator Lorne Michaels. Murray described the conversation as two friends of more than 30 years catching up, and she said Franken was telling Michaels about his experiences on the campaign trail.

In relating a story about recording campaign commercials, Franken noted how all political candidates must say they “approve this message” in their ads — and editorialized that he thought it must be a difficult task for McCain, whom many Democrats and pundits have accused of leveling dishonest charges against Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Not long after the conversation between Franken and Michaels, “SNL” head writer Seth Meyers contacted Franken and they spoke briefly about the idea, the campaign said. Murray said Franken was not involved in writing any of the specifics of the skit.

“Lorne Michaels decided Al’s real life experience was funny, and it became an accidental inspiration for a comedy sketch,” Murray said.

  22. Average Joe Says:

This is the ol’ “it depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is” defense. It’s a lie of omission, but it’s still a lie.

This is your typical, no-conscience liberal. Lying is okay, and defensible.

  23. Average Joe Says:

It’s worse than that. They mock a man who can’t type who became that way because he gave five years of his life being tortured as a prisoner of war.

How low do people have to be, how pathetic does someone have to be to mock someone like that? These people have absolutely no shame.

  24. walter hanson Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 7:18 PM

    Hey Aron:

So according to your own post Al Franken is calling John Mccain a liar and not Obama. Obama claims that John Mccain doesn’t send email and leaves out that because of his war injuries he can’t use a keyboard like us. Obama claims he is a real reformer so that’s why he didn’t support the reform candidate in the Cook County Board election in 2006 yet he makes fun of John Mccain’s claim that he is a real reformer. And on a segment of Sixty Minutes tonight he claims he goes into rooms with people of differing opionions and puts them together. So I guess that’s why he walks away from John Mccain and sends him a sarcastic letter after Mccain leaves the country on a trip. Or how about he claims the surge will never work and when it does work it was other factors. THE PERSON WHO MAKES A JOKE THAT I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE IS OBAMA. If that had been Obama then the sketch might have been funny since it was based on reality. This sketch was based on liberals perceptions of Republican ideas. That might explain why Republicans weren’t laughing.

Now according to you and Al Franken he approves of his commercials. So when for example that he did that commercial he will preserve Social Security without privitizing it he was lieing since studies have shown that if you blow up the cap on the tax that will still have a deficit of $150 billion per year in 2030. Or does Al have a secret plan to reduce the benefits.

Come on Aron Al approves his campaign messages and he actually spoke his own words in this ad not a fish. So if Franken approves all of his messages is he just lieing to the voters about really saving Social Security since he hasn’t proposed a real solution? Is he going to cut benefits which will be a lie to those seniors which he said he cared about. Oh wait a minute he wants to be US Senator in 2008 so he doesn’t care what will happen in 2030.

And this is the man who makes it a point that he approves of his messages.

The bottom line. Al Franken who makes joke campaign ads makes a joke out of saying that he approves his messages.

And this man wants to be a Senator!

Al’s behavior in writing for SNL at this time is really evidence of how sick he is. It is like an obsession with him to have put one over on the DFL and he cannot help himself but play with Minnsota a little more— he is in fantasyland when he puts a thumb in the eye of the public by re-affilitating with SNL after spending two years trying to disassociate himself from his past.
Folks, its all about Al and his ego.

  26. ansel Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 8:48 PM

the biggest point that the libs are missing is that franken attempted to explain away all his prior anti-feminist and pro-rape humor as that was in the past he was no longer involved in the business.

well, what can we say? another day, another lie.

  27. Tommy Johnson Says:

Which, of course, is why ol’ Smokescreen will go down as one of the most corrupt politicians in Minnesota history.

He gets caught in RentGate, tries to cover it up with an after-the-fact “lease”, and then gets nailed with UtilitiesGate.

Micheal is correct; and ol’ Smokescreen proves it – it’s the cover-up.

  28. walter hanson Says:
    September 21st, 2008 at 9:01 PM

    Tommy:

He did a lot to show corruption at the United Nations. The fact that you don’t care about UN corruption is the problem.

If you care about corruption how is it in his first term Obama is already number two in campaign donations from Fannie Mae because they were buying off politicans to avoid the changes that were need to save the organization. The changes which the Bush administaration and John Mccain were trying to make, but the senate blocked.

If you care about corruption why do you support the party that has one house member with over a hundred thousand dollars in his freezer and another one (who by the way is the chief writer of tax laws in the US House now) who hasn’t paid his taxes.

I can go on Tommy, but you support the Democrat party which is the party of corruption.

  29. Tommy Johnson Says:

Walter, while ol’ Smokescreen was investigating the UN, pallets – PALLETS – of hundred dollar bills went missing in Iraq. And Coleman didn’t investigate a thing.

And after the bailouts in the news, after Abramoff staying in the news, it’s simply laughable that you’d call the Democratic Party the party of corruption.

You’re a simple man, Walter – and you’ll be happy in your Small Tent Party – the party doomed to Permanent Minority Status due to fools like you.

  30. DantheMan Says:

    Zzzzzzzzzz……….

Not an issue. This is Freakin SNL. They make the skits funny by exaggerating reality. They exaggerated what the process for thinking of campaign commercials is… not a big deal.

I’m still waiting to see them exaggerate some of Obama’s faults. Rumor is that the actors there revere Obama too much to make fun of him. If a nationally televised network comedy show can only take shots at one side… then I’d have an issue with it.

“What about the husband?” asked the reporter during a mock assignment meeting for the paper. “You know he’s doing those daughters. I mean, come on. It’s Alaska.”

  35. Swiftee Says:

    Say, Frankenphiles?

HAve you seen the FRONT PAGE of the Strib this morning?

What may have started as a phone call to an old friend has spiraled into the latest controversy to dog the U.S. Senate campaign of Democratic candidate Al Franken.

The best Franken can hope for at this point is that he won’t be run out on a rail come November 4th.

Nice work Democrats! FRanken himself couldn’t have written a better script for the coming humiliation waiting for him!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahaha!!

  36. DantheMan Says:
    September 22nd, 2008 at 10:46 AM

Let’s think about this for a second. Is it illegal or unethical for Franken to contribute to a show? Probably not. Is Saturday night live known for being serious? No. Does Saturday night live, in a subconcious way, influence the less informed voter? Perhaps.

At face value, nothing flat-out illegal.

But then, you have the fact of campaign finance laws. A candidate would pay big bucks to get even a mockingly crude commercial against his opponent to be televised. And you have the fat that Franken, while not running against McCain, is certainly in a high-profile race where he is bound by campaign finance rules, and would surely benefit from an Obama voting surge.

So Senate candidate Al Franken helped create a skit which takes shots at McCain in a way that is a step further than exaggerating some personality quirk or making fun of his looks, which is more typical of SNL. And not only did he not need to pay for it, but NBC was paid by sponsors to air it.

This is smelling more and more fishy as I think about it. I think the only fair thing to do is allow a GOP Senate candidate in a tight race somewhere to help craft material on Obama. Lord knows its there… if the SNL writers can see it.

  37. DantheMan Says:
    September 22nd, 2008 at 10:50 AM

    Just thinking about SNL history…

They mocked Ford’s clumsiness, a character quirk
They mocked Mondale’s boringness, a character quirk
They mocked Reagan’s age, fair game
They mocked Clinton’s womanizing, something that was well-documented in the news
They mocked Bush’s speech, a character quirk (strategerie)
    They mocked Gore’s boringness..

With McCain, they imply that he is dishonest and unethical. I love SNL… but that is quite a departure from their pattern.

Let’s see if they have the courage to make fun of Obama’s lack of experience, or the fact that his meteoric rise has the same tendencies of a stock market bubble. I bet they don’t have the courage to make fun of someone they’ve fallen in love with.
