BREAKING NEWS: POWERFUL IRON RANGE DFLER ENDORSES NORM COLEMAN

By Michael Brodkorb | September 28, 2008

“TOWER — Longtime DFL legislator Doug Johnson said he was ingrained with the political philosophy of Minnesota legendary Senator and Vice President Hubert Humphrey — “The worst Democrat is better than the best Republican.”

But on Nov. 4, the former chairman of the powerful state Senate Tax Commission, will split his vote for the first time ever. His ballot will be marked in a familiar Democratic way for Barack Obama for president, Jim Oberstar for 8th District congressman, Tom Bakk for state senator and David Dill for state representative. But in the U.S. Senate race, Johnson will cast his vote for incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman.

‘I’m strongly supporting U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman for re-election, the only Republican I will have voted for in more than 40 years as an eligible voter,’ Johnson said in a telephone interview late last week.” Source: Mesabi Daily News, September 27, 2008

“‘Norm Coleman has a passion on issues without getting angry at the opposition. This way, Norm can work across party lines and get things done for the Range and state, similar to what I used to do in the Legislature. Al Franken appears passionate but angry. And if you go to Washington angry you might as well stay home as you won’t get anything done,” Johnson said.” Source: Mesabi Daily News, September 27, 2008

Sounds like the Johnson-Franken rally slated for Bab’s dinner might be cancelled. The toxic fumes are spreading.

It makes sense that the chair of the tax commission wouldn’t support Franken — he is a tax evader . . take a look. .

Isn’t it refresing that a politician can take a stand like that?

    Oh, wait – Johnson’s a DFLer.

If a GOPer came out for Franken, the GOP would strip them of the chair assignment, withhold endorsement in the next election, and then run someone against ‘em.

Dissent is allowed in the DFL; in the GOP it’s punished.

Thanks for pointing this out, Michael!

    Tommy:

You claim and other Democrats claim that Norm is running a 100% negative campaign. so why on earth all summer and fall have democrats been saying things like Franken is Toxis or unelectable.

If Franken has been running a positive upbeat campaign none of this should be happening especially in what has been described as a Democrat year.

Powerful? In what way? The guy’s been retired for years. A has-been. A hack. Who cares what a retired state legislator says? It’s only because he’s in the pocket of Excelsior Energy’s “clean coal” scam up on da Range, and so is Norm.

  8. Steve-O Says:

LOL @ Tommy’s spin. Let’s talk about what you guys did to Randy Kelly after he endorsed Bush.

And lauding the DFL for not stripping Johnson of his chair assignment & endorsement? Duh, Johnson’s retired! MinnyDem has your talking points, Tommy. Johnson’s a “has-been”. You’re supposed to pretend you don’t care what he says.

[...] research and copy/pasting Republican press releases: Norm Coleman’s campaign, highly paid Republican bloggers and their lapdogs in the mainstream media are trumpeting the news that former DFL state senator [...]

However, Doug Johnson is currently a lobbyist who is looking for Norm Coleman to support his organization in building a coal energy plant. Doesn’t exactly sound like he has thrown his support behind the Senator for “philosophical” reasons! This doesn’t sound like a very important or valid endoresement.
