NRCC PRESS RELEASE: “AD WATCH: MADIA’S OWN WORDS TELL OF TAX-HIKE AGENDA”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | October 1, 2008
Washington – Ashwin Madia, Democrat candidate in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District, is trying to deceive voters once again with an ad that claims that he would not raise taxes on the middle class. This comes despite Madia’s repeated statements on the record that would suggest that he would in fact raise taxes on all Americans.
Since becoming a candidate for Congress, Madia has stated:
- His support for the Death Tax: “On the estate tax, no, I don’t think we ought to repeal it.†(Candidate Forum, 01/27/2008)
- His support for raising the capital gains tax: “On the capital gains tax, I think we ought to look at increasing it.†(Candidate Forum, 01/27/2008)
- His support for the largest tax hike in history: “We’ve got to let the Bush tax cuts expire.†(SD 42 & 43 Meeting, 11/28/2007)
Madia needs to look at all the facts before spouting off the same tired talking points. If the tax cuts were to expire, taxes would increase on everyone in staggering amounts, according to the U.S. Department of Treasury:
- 115 Million taxpayers would see a $1,716 tax increase
- 84 Million women would see a $1,970 tax increase
- 48 million married couples with children would see a $2,726 tax increase
- 42 million families with children would see a $2,084 tax increase.
- 12 million single mothers would see a $1,062 tax increase.
- 17 million seniors would see their taxes skyrocket $2,034
- 26 million small business owners would be a $3,637 tax increase.
“Ashwin Madia is trying to mislead and deceive Minnesota voters with his claim that he wouldn’t vote to raise middle class taxes,†said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Based on his own words, he would vote to raise taxes on millions of middle class Americans, including an increase in the death tax, the marriage penalty, and the child tax credit.”
Ashwin Madia has said in his own words that he would vote for reckless tax increases that affect all Americans, including the middle class. In these dire economic times, the last thing Minnesotans need are higher taxes.

So, basically, this press release is almost entirely based on an incorrect quoting of Madia’s position on the Bush tax cuts? He’s said it should expire, but only for those making ? 250k. I realize that the republicans THINK that’s all Americans, or at least all of the middle class, but as it turns out, it’s not.
Nice try.
But, it’s not shocking that Republicans don’t understand Madia’s economic plan. The last 8 years have shown that the Republicans lack ANY understanding of economic policy.

PD
You really don’t have a clue what is on the minds of the people of Minnesota. I have friends and relatives that live in the 3rd and they don’t like Madia.
The word carpet bagger and scummy lawyer came up at a party two weeks a go in Eden Prairie and Outside the politically incorrect liberal party the taxpayers don’t like his tactics or the fact that like Franken he is not one of them and doesn’t hold there values. It’s is funny to me to read the liberal hate you and the other small minded minority dems spew here and on the other Dem hate blogs.
In the real world were the non political insiders talk to each other in a civil way Minnesota is fast becoming republican and Liberal friends are dissenting agents there party due to putting unqualified carpet baggers on the ticket and the HATE being spewed by people like you, Tommy, Yoni, ECT.
Minnesota Dems are the party of HATE and people that don’t live in Minneapolis see it.

Hottip,
That was a nice load of crap you just wrote there. So, because your friends at a party think Madia is a scummy lawyer (notwithstanding your beloved Coleman is also a “scummy lawyer”) people of the third will look past the fact that Paulsen has no position on any substantive issue, dodges debates, lacks any understanding of the economy (or even his opponents position) and his ultra conservative social positions?
I’m sorry, but in the real world, most people’s values don’t include anti-gay, anti-minority, anti-poor, please teach my kids about talking snakes and adam and eve in science class values.

Letting the Bush tax cuts expire would not be a raise in taxes. If the Republicans wanted those cuts to be permanent why did they put a sunset on them?
I can tell you why, because the Republicans knew damn well there would be an election in 2008 and wanted to make the false argument that the NRCC is making.

hottip, I live in Eden Prairie, and I used to belong to the Indpendent-Republican party.
When the rightwingnuts took over the party, many – including me – departed.
These days, I see a lot of familiar faces from the old I-R party at DFL functions.
I highly doubt you see many former-DFL members at RPM functions.
IOW, you are – as usual – full of shit.

Letting Eric Paulsen into the house would apparently only mean that John Boehner would have one more district to represent.
Eric Paulsen appears to have taken no position on any issue, and he is nearly absent from the campaign trail. If it weren’t for the occasional NRCC press release propping him up, most Minnesotans would have no idea he is still even in the race.
We are just getting done with six years where George Bush owned our Senate vote. Why would we want to get that seat back and then give John Boehner one of our House votes?

Tommy writes: “I highly doubt you see many former-DFL members at RPM functions.”
As usual, Tommy shoots from the hip but he is not hip.
Here’s some former Democrats that I do see at RPM functions: 1) U.S. Senator Norm Coleman.
2)Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. 3) Some 40 percent of Republican state convention delegates at the 2008 convention in Rochester who raised their hands in response to the question: “How many of you are former Democrats?”

Ashwin Madia: Starve your children, feed the government.

Stonewall, when I was a member of the old I-R party, the DFL caucused at a table at Perkins on Hwy 7.
This last caucus, the DFL outdrew the RPM by about 4 to 1; at the SD Convention the DFL filled the huge lunchroom at Eden Prairie High while the GOP rented a conference room at Grace Church.
The simple fact is that the GOP has engaged in ideological cleansing – and the DFL is the beneficiary.
It’s a small tent the GOP now owns; it started when they ran off the independents and moderates and has increased ever since.
At the CD-3 debate, all three at one time belonged to the party on the right; as the party on the right careened to extremist territory, two of ‘em bailed out of the impending train wreck.
As a direct result of the rightwing fanatics – and Paulsen clearly is one of ‘em – you will never again see the GOP controlling all three branches at the federal level, and it’s highly likely Tim Pawlenty will face a veto-proof state house and senate.
Congratulations. You rightwingnuts have your small tent all to yourselves.

PD:
Plymouth Dem said, “He’s said it should expire, but only for those making ? 250k.†Actually that is not true. Madia said over and over again during the endorsement fight that he would let the Bush tax cuts, expire. He said it without qualification. When he went in front of the Camber of commerce, he then changed his position. One of the big problems Madia is going to have is that he stands for something different depending on who he is talking to. It is a legitimate issue to talk about Madia’s stand on taxes, and show video of him saying it.
You also said, “But, it’s not shocking that Republicans don’t understand Madia’s economic plan.†I think we understand exactly what he wants to do, we are not fooled by his contradictory statements.

“Actually that is not true. Madia said over and over again during the endorsement fight that he would let the Bush tax cuts, expire”
I listened to him throughout the endorsement process and he continued to qualify that he wanted to eliminate the tax cuts for the top 1% or those making 250k. It is not “contradictory” to say I want the Bush tax cuts to expire and to also say I want the Bush tax cuts to expire for the top 1% of earners.
This is a losing argument for Paulsen if for no other reason than Madia at least attempts to articulate a position unlike Paulsen who’s only position on the economy to date has been let’s keep on keeping on with Bush’s economic policies. The guy wasn’t even prepared enough to take a stand on the bailout (and to my knowledge STILL hasn’t.)

“This last caucus, the DFL outdrew the RPM by about 4 to 1″
Yeah, that’s because they had a tough decision to make… whether to choose the EEOC candidate, or the qualified one.

I had not been acquainted with any of the attendees I was a guest of a guest and the vast majority were women from the neighborhood. I did not solicit there comments I only listened to what the EP residents were talking about. The discussion started when one of the guests commented about slanderous things being said about Paulsen and his children and the she new the children and there mother. They were very upset that Madia was going after the children and would not vote for him.
“I’m sorry, but in the real world, most people’s values don’t include anti-gay, anti-minority, anti-poor, please teach my kids about talking snakes and adam and eve in science class values.†WoW are you full of Bullshit!! PD you are smart person but please get with the real world and pull your head out of you ASS!
I have been reading your bullshit of months now and your either a lawyer, college professor or a politician. As Tommy would say you’re a bootlicker for you party.
Good luck you will need it after November.
Tommy you telling me I’m full of shit is not surprising do to your lack of intellect.
As many have responded to you rants, lies and slander and pointed out that you are a non factor. Please seek professional help.
Also…do you still hate RAG HEADS as you called them in one of your post on MDE some months back?? I’m sure that your DEM friends in EP would also like to know if you HATE them.

Democrats raise taxes and grow government, sun rises in the East.
I don’t give a rat’s ass if the increase is on people earning more then $250K or $500K, Government takes twice as much money now then it should.
Anyone who runs for office saying Government needs more money to operate is too stupid to hold a political position. That goes for everyone in every party!
Any of you Lefties think you’re unaffected because your political puppet masters say they only tax the other guy, wake up and get a clue.

“I don’t give a rat’s ass if the increase is on people earning more then $250K or $500K, Government takes twice as much money now then it should.”
I love how republicans are more than happy to spend spend spend on their various programs but also complain about their government being too big and taking too many taxes.
Tell me, where are you trimming half of the budget? Are you pulling out of Iraq? Are you eliminating social security? Are you going to avoid the bail out? We probably didn’t need that 35W bridge did we?
October 1st, 2008 at 3:28 PM
hottip, It doesn’t take a lot of intellect to point out you’re spinning bullshit.
And I got plenty left over after doing just that.

“BUSH`s tax cuts to expire on those making 250k…Republicans think that`s all Americans, or all of the middle class, but as it turns out, it`s not.” No, they just realize that those income earners and above (1% of total)pay about 40% of all income taxes taken in.
