MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “ASHWIN MADIA CONTINUES TO COVER HIS TRACKS”

    By Michael B. Brodkorb | October 13, 2008

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey released the following statement regarding Democrat Ashwin Madia’s performance in the October 10 Third Congressional District debate.

“Ashwin Madia keeps trying to cover his tracks on the negative campaign he and his allies are conducting. He lied when he said he wasn’t running any negative advertisements, that he hadn’t participated in smearing Erik Paulsen’s record, and when he denied knowledge of his own plans to raise taxes. The truth is the Team Madia campaign of negative ads and underhanded tactics serve to distract from Madia’s plans to raise taxes on residents of the 3rd Congressional District.”

The Lies Of Ashwin Madia: TPT Debate Edition

Denied Knowledge Of Own Plan To Eliminate Credit Union Tax Exemption

October 7, 2008: Madia Explains To MPR How He Plans To Eliminate The Credit-Union Tax Exemption “GILBERT: What’s the credit union tax exemption? MADIA: So currently credit unions have a tax exemption uh and as compared to banks and this would be a way for us to again save some money and help put this towards um, allowing small businesses to expand healthcare that they provide to their employees and to bring healthcare costs down for them.” (MPR phone interview with Curtis Gilbert, October 7, 2008)

October 10, 2008: Madia Lies About His Credit-Union Tax “PAULSEN: Well I’m going to tell you that uh, the $2.3 trillion he’s talking about, he just offered some new tax increases just this week in his small business plan. You would be raising taxes on others in order to pay for other programs. I don’t think we should be doing that. MODERATOR: Is that true? MADIA: (shakes head) No, I’m not quite sure what he’s referring to. PAULSEN: Taxes on the credit-unions, taxes on those who work abroad, it’ll be tougher for companies like Medtronic, because folks that are American citizens in those companies are now going to be paying higher taxes. MADIA: uh I know, the uh, the credit union thing I’m not quite sure what you’re referring to.” (TPT Almanac Debate, October 10, 2008)

“Paulsen Is Only One Running Negative Ads”

October 7: Madia Says All His Ads Are Positive; KSTP Says “That’s Not Exactly True” However, the mailings came from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. In response, Democratic candidate Ashwin Madia said he couldn’t control what the national party does. “I’m responsible for my campaign. Every ad that I put on television that says, ‘I approved this message.’ I approved every word of it and I stand behind it, and all of those are positive messages,” Madia explained. But political experts say that’s not exactly true. Some of Madia’s advertisements harshly criticize Paulsen. On the other hand, a new Paulsen ad calls Madia a liar, and last week questioned Madia’s ties to the third district. (“Ramstad Angry At 3rd District Smear Campaigns,” KSTP.com, October 7, 2008)

October 10: Madia Again Lies In The Debate Saying “There Is One Candidate That Is Running Negative Ads Right Now, And It’s Erik.” “Well look, there’s only one candidate that’s running negative ads in this race and it’s not me.” “But I want to make clear, there is one candidate that is running negative ads right now, and it’s Erik.” (Ashwin Madia, TPT Almanac debate, October 10, 2008)

Denied Having Made Same Coordinated Attacks On Paulsen’s Record As DCCC Has Made

“The first alleged lie the ad cites actually isn’t Madia’s. It’s from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which accused Paulsen of accepting money raised in a strip club. Paulsen cites a KSTP fact check of those DCCC mailers, which found the strip club allegations so misleading it gave them an ‘F.’ While those mailers came from the DCCC, the Madia campaign has made similar charges in a press release, as we’ve noted on Polinaut in the past.” (Curtis Gilbert, “A Look At The Other “Lies” Alleged In Paulsen Ad,” MPR Polinaut blog, October 8, 2008)

Team Madia Press Release Cites Same Charges As DCCC. (Press Release, “Paulsen Fails in Attempt to Hide his Dirty Money,” Madia For Congress, September 15, 2008)

Madia Denies Coordinating With DCCC On Paulsen Attack Ads “PAULSEN: I just want to say that I have a press release that came out, a press release that came right out of the Madia campaign that exactly mirrors the exact DCCC ads that are running against me to smear my record. Exactly almost word for word. So there is coordination. MODERATOR: And you’re denying this coordination? Because that’s not allowed, as we know. You know the law. MADIA: Absolutely.” (Ashwin Madia, TPT Almanac debate, October 10, 2008)

The Team Madia Campaign Of Deception And Dirty Tricks

Madia’s Campaign Issued A Press Release Attacking Paulsen For Fundraising.“The first alleged lie the ad cites actually isn’t Madia’s.

KSTP’s Truth Test Called Team Madia Ads “Among The Most Over The Top And Outrageous.” “5 EYEWITNESS NEWS checked the accuracy of an advertisement against Republican Erik Paulson in our ‘Truth Test.’  In fact, it may be among the most over the top and outrageous we’ve seen.” (Source: KSTP, September 30, 2008)

KSTP Truth Test Gave Team Madia Mailings An ‘F.’ “Because of misleading and false information in these ads, we give them an ‘F’” (Source: KSTP, September 30, 2008)

DFL Staffer Campaigning for Ashwin Madia Cited For Theft: “A DFL campaign worker was arrested after he took a girl’s scooter from her backyard while canvassing.  22-year-old Sean Folstad went into the backyard of Bruce Ackerman and took his daughter’s scooter.  A few minutes later and a couple of blocks away, Champlin police caught Folstad at Northland Park.” (Source: FOX 9, September 29, 2008)

Wife of Madia’s Communications Director Caught on Film Taking Down Paulsen for Congress Lawn Signs: “Another person in the video points out the sign stealer has an Ashwin Madia bumper sticker.  ‘I also happen to be a Madia volunteer,’ she says.  A check of a license plate reveals she’s married to Dan Pollock — Ashwin Madia’s communications director and spokesperson.” (Source: FOX 9, September 26, 2008)

Madia’s Campaign Sent Out Press Release “Ripping” Erik Paulsen: “Third District DFL congressional candidate Ashwin Madia’s communications director just forwarded along a press release ripping his Republican opponent for a typographical error.” (Polinaut, MPR, September 12, 2008)

Michael: I don’t see where Madia is lying at all here. He’s not covering his tracks. You know as well as I do that Madia is just continuing his campaign and all you’re trying to do is tear him down personally because Erik Paulsen can’t win on his own merit.

I think the people of CD3 are seeing through your crap, Michael.

Aaron: It’s all there for you to read. Madia has a real problem with the truth.

Thanks for the laughs Mr. Carey.

Can you get back to me when Erik decides it’s time to communicate with the voters. They are losing patience.

How does Erik Paulsen expect to win a Congressional seat without addressing the issues important to middle class families? Is Erik unable to speak for himself, or does he always require his surrogates to babysit?

I mean, lets’ get serious here. What is Erik hiding?

      Michael:

With all due respect, has Erik decided to sit out the rest of the campaign and just hope that you and Ron can pull this one out for him.

Puzzling strategy, but I’m no longer complaining. The voters will finish this charade.

When will we hear from Erik?

    8. Chestnut Says:
      October 13th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

danbrome, just because you’re too deaf to hear, doesn’t mean Paulsen isn’t speaking. Just because you’re too stupid to comprehend the message, doesn’t mean that it isn’t there.

Madia is a dishonest, smug, prick. If the man and his campaign could get through one week without telling outrageous lies, it would be an amazing accomplishment.

Madia: Ready to piss his pants.

    9. danbrome Says:
      October 13th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

      Chestnut:

Your vile nonsense is astonishing. Are you actually that naive, or is it just an act.
      Seriously.

Erik is silent because he has nothing to offer the people of the 3rd CD. Can he honestly think he can win a Congressional seat by hiding and letting his surrogates trash Madia’s good name?

Madia: Fighting for ALL OF US

    10. danbrome Says:

      Chestnut:

If there is a message from Erik, can you tell me what it is, or refer me to media outlets covering his positions on the issues?

Voters deserve better than to be ignored.

    11. danbrome Says:
      October 13th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

And don’t refer me to his website. The site has no credibility since it doesn’t even mention Iraq anywhere. Real cute. He wants to be a Congressman, but has no position on Iraq.

    12. Chestnut Says:
      October 13th, 2008 at 10:44 pm

      Ashwin Madia’s plan:

      1) Surrender to al Queda
      2) Resurrect Smoot-Hawley-style protectionism
      3) Turn America’s back on our allies
      4) Raise costs for food and energy across the board
      5) Distribute free cheese

Madia is just another goddam dumb liberal too dishonest to admit he’s just another goddam socialist. Madia is just another goddam liberal out of touch with reality.

    13. Chestnut Says:
      October 13th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Paulsen started his campaign telling whoppers, and he hasn’t stopped since.

It’s actually kind of fun, watching the final days of career politician Erik Paulsen’s political career.

Who does this punk’s hair? Every time I see him his hair looks like he just got out of bed. He always looks half asleep.

    19. Tommy Johnson Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 7:29 am

And Paulsen looks like a metrosexual. Ya think Larry Craig gave Paulsen the name of a good stylist?

    20. Average Joe Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 7:52 am

Oh please. Paulsen looks like your average business guy. Madia looks like he spent the night at his best friends girlfriends house and had to escape before getting shot.

And that lower lip always hanging out. He just looks stupid. How anyone can take this lying punk seriously is beyond normal comprehension.

    21. Tommy Johnson Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 8:09 am

Paulsen looks like he should be a fill-in for Mac Hammond. And it seems Mac and Erik might have something in common when it comes to fiscal irresponsiblity.

    22. Average Joe Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 8:18 am

So looking good and well-kept is wrong and implies you’re a money-grubbing preacher. Uh-huh.

Madia needs a comb. I’d send him one but then you’d be forced to ask him “when did you get a comb and who gave it to you?” and I don’t want to put you into that ethical dilemma (not that you wrestle with right and wrong much).

    23. Chestnut Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 8:28 am

“And it seems Mac and Erik might have something in common when it comes to fiscal irresponsiblity.”

In all honesty, it would seem that Mac and Al Franken have more in common with regard to IRS problems.

    24. Tommy Johnson Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 8:38 am

      Touche, Chestnut.

And Joe? I don’t have to wrestle much at all with that; I just remember these words: “Well, the truth is, there are simple answers, they just are not easy ones. “

Michael, you must think if you print enough lies over and over again, someone will believe them..only you and some of your potty mouthed friends. Ashwin Madia is talking about the issues and solutions, not hiding out somewhere and refusing to engage in a reasonable discussion…maybe we should compare the response he gets at the Humphrey Institute compared to Madia’s yesterday….one of the largest crowds they’ve ever had for one of these events and they stayed around after to talk with Madia about his plans….Ashwin Madia, engaging the voters yesterday, today, and tomorrow….Erik Paulsen…career politician who’s lucky to have a job at Target.

    28. bowhuntdude Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

It’s obvious Madia lied in the debate. On 10/7/08 he explains his plan to end the credit-union tax exemption to MPR. Then on 10/10/08 he says he’s unsure what Paulsen is referring to when Erik brought it up. LIAR.

    29. raceover Says:
      October 14th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Does anyone think Paulsen still has any chance? He’s a few points down, being outspent by millions of dollars, the DCCC has pulled the plug, and Rothenberg –who liked him –thinks he’s done. I wonder whether Michael honestly believe Erik has the slightest prayer of victory.

Keep up the good work, Michael. I actually send my undecided girlfriends to your blog so they can see the quality work that a Paulsen staffer produces. The vile language and baseless attacks makes Madia supporters every time!
