THE UPTAKE COMPLIES WITH GAG ORDER REQUEST FROM TEAM FRANKEN
By Michael B. Brodkorb | November 25, 2008

According to public comments made today by The UpTake’s Mike McIntee, Team Franken requested that the UpTake (and actual media outlets) no longer provide live video of their press conferences. While WCCO-TV did a live shot from Team Franken’s headquarters, The UpTake complied with gag order request and didn’t provide live video of Team Franken’s 11:30 a.m. press conference. Team Franken was apparently concerned about outside groups seeing their press conference live, so The Uptake buried the live feed.
No credible media outlet would accept the terms issued by Team Franken, but since The UpTake isn’t a credible media outlet, or even a media outlet, they complied. Where’s the angry video from The UpTake expressing outrage at Team Franken’s instructions? I wouldn’t expect to see any credible outrage from this so-called band of “citizen journalists.”
Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for more information on this developing story.
UPDATE: This post spawned a lively comment section, but I wanted to add another thought to the main post: I think it’s inconsistent for members of The UpTake to consider themselves advocates of citizen journalists/bloggers, while using their blog/website to attack other citizen journalists.

Cool! So, will you take them with you to the next Norm conference? I notice they’re not putting up any Coleman tape at all.
November 25th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Hey Michael – can you get the Coleman campaign to allow TheUptake to have access to their pressers, if TheUptake agrees to the same restrictions?
November 25th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Hypocrisy, thy party is GOP.
Let me get this straight: The UpTake isn’t allowed to broadcast video from Coleman press conferences. But you’re upset that they didn’t broadcast video from the Franken press conference.
Until the Coleman campaign will allow video from their press conferences, I don’t see what your problem is.
November 25th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Gag order? So, you’re saying that the
Uptake, putting up video of the Franken press conference after the conference is over, is a gag order? So, what do you call the complete denial of entry to the Coleman headquarters? Banishment? Terrorism?
November 25th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Gosh, thank goodness you broke this.
November 25th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I understand that the purpose of this site is to expose the practices of Democrats, not Republicans. But in fairness, how do you not acknowledge that the Coleman campaign has refused to allow The UpTake access to its news conferences?
I’d be curious why the Franken campaign wanted no live streaming… especially considering The UpTake still aired the entire thing, just on a delay.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Michael,
Some fact-correction for you.
The UpTake, much like C-SPAN, provides live unfiltered coverage of political events in Minnesota as our resources allow, including press conferences and debates. You’ve highly praised us for providing this service in the past, face-to-face with me and on-camera.
We made it clear to the Franken campaign that we would not abide by a ban on live streaming of their press conferences unless it was an across-to-board restriction applicable to all press. They issued a statement to that effect. The WCCO live shot you refer to taken *outside* Franken HQ as you see here:
http://wcco.com/election/missing.ballots.found.2.873776.html
The UpTake is free to do the same thing, but it has little value. Instead, we live-twitter from the press conference and are the first to get that information to the public.
In the case of Coleman’s campaign, we and MN Independent are being singled out while other press and citizen journalists like yourself are allowed to cover the event. This is a disservice to Minnesota, and unethical. We’d love to provide live unfiltered coverage of Coleman press conferences, or even taped unfiltered coverage.
I’m disappointed at the way you’ve characterized this and it seems to go against what you’ve said in the past.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Hey DFL Jason-
Why don’t you ask DFL Don Shelby or DFL Pat Kessler to do the next “Good Question” segment on this?
By the way, do you still stop at the KFC on White Bear Avenue and I-94?
November 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Oh, Damn! Owned! Take that, DFL Jason!
Of course, I suppose you could turn it around by calling the previous commentor something like “fascist talking robot toad licker MplsSteve,” since that’s the level of dialogue that he seems to prefer.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
“I’m disappointed at the way you’ve characterized this and it seems to go against what you’ve said in the past.”
NO . . . MikeDEceit, deceiving . . . NO, couldn’t be.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
It’s pretty gay if you ask me. Gay that Franken would cut a live feed. And gay that Coleman would restrict the same.
Why did so many Minnesotan’s vote for either of these two stupid sons of bitches, anyway?
November 25th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Maybe they like gays?
November 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Wait, don’t you say above that every other outlet complied as well?
Also, do you have a link to anything indicating it went down like this? Seems like something that’s a bit mischaracterized.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
OH FINALLY! I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to start stalking DeRusha. Now I know where to start.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
“UPTAKE” THE FINAL WORD
November 25th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
[...] get over the repugnant politics of one Michael Brodkorb. In the latest installment of his blog, he complains that The UpTake is no longer posting live video of Al Franken press conferences, despite the fact [...]
November 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
DFL Jason, that’s rich.
Anyway, I don’t have a problem with MDE bringing this up. I’d have serious questions as to why the Franken campaign is against live streaming their news conference. What’s the harm?
But to slam The UpTake for complying with that request, without noting that they’ve attempted to do the same live streaming at Coleman news conferences, seems a little disingenuous to me.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Don’t back away from the charges, DFL Jason! You’re part of the liberal attack gotacha media and you’re responsible for the mess this country is in, you and your KFC food and your so-called investigatory journalism!
November 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
“It’s pretty gay”
Kyle.. can you please explain the meaning of this? Seriously.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
And if other news outlets complied to the same rqeuest, why is the UpTake being singled out and shit on?
November 25th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Disingenuous is the name of the game here at MDE.
Everyone has an axe to grind. The fun is in learning what they are and exploiting them. I imagine that is why Steve is so interested in where people eat. He gets a halfie seeing a television reporter at a drive thru, and now he gets a chance to brag about it. Maybe someone will want HIS autograph because of it. Then he would be famous, and all the richness that the republican way of life was supposed to provide would finally come his way.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
To be fair, seeing Jason at a fast food place is pretty exciting.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
If loving Popcorn Chicken makes me a member of the DFL media elite… than put me in cuffs, call my public defender, and haul me away.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Who is Jason DeRusha?
November 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Here’s an answer to your question, Master of None:

November 25th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
“highly credible media outlets”
Best laugh I’ve had all day.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
What part of their reporting lacks credibility?
November 25th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
To Chuck and other members of The Uptake: I think it’s rather silly to pretend you’re an advocate of citizen journalists, while attacking citizen journalists. Members of the The Uptake have tried to challenge my right to be citizen blogger.
BTW, I have always believed that Chuck is a stand-up guy.
November 25th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Quote from today’s TheUptake stream:
“Chuckumentary: Yes, I consider MDE a citizen journalist and should be allowed into a Franken press event. The UpTake is a non-profit journalism organization, no question we are press regardless of political views.”
Sounds like he’s advocating for your inclusion.
November 25th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Is Noah Kunin still with The Uptake?
November 25th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
IMO, the Uptake is cutting it’s own throat by continuing to link itself with MiniSoros Dependent.
Chuck and I have had our disagreements, and it’s obvious to anyone that the Uptake is a left wing production, but it’s just as obvious that the lefty product they do produce is pretty high quality.
And while the blanket claim to be “citizen journalists” can be used to cover a bias, to my knowledge I don’t think the UpTake has ever denied it’s liberal bias.
I also have not heard that they are being covertly funded by a certifiable socialist kook with deep pockets.
The same cannot be said about Robin Marty’s nest of Soros minions who, by their initial mendacity, have forever forfeited their chance at being considered anything other than the astro-turf sock puppet theater they are today.
November 25th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
I guess what I’m saying is, if it were up to me, I’d let the Uptake cover press releases….if they lose the Soros baggage.
November 25th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Basically, the root of this story is all made up. Michael Brodkorb is a MAVERICK! I really hope you get a leadership position with the GOP. Years more fun for me.
November 25th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Yeah, they’re lefties, and if you read the discussion there, they a: have no room for intellectual/ideological diversity and b: pretend that they don’t don’t know that they’re lefty one-notes.
a: is fine; b: is also fine, as long as other people get to call them on it.
November 25th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Say, Aairhead?
Why are you wasting your mad assnozzle skillz at MnPubic for free when you could be getting paid at MiniSoros Dependent?
Since they got rid of Feckless Jeff and Andy Birkey, they are real short on complete, utter morons….you should interview. No, really.
November 25th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Sue, they are not fooling anyone…but I don’t see where they’re trying to, at least not very hard.
I don’t have any problem with lefty pap mongers per se, I object to lefty pap spreaders that lie about it outright.
I also don’t have any problem with them limiting their contributors to liberals as long as they are funding themselves. It’s their equipment, it’s their website.
I just don’t want to hear that they are receiving any government grants, or I’ll be down there demanding equal time….Hee hee…Chuck would go ballistic!
Free the UpTake! (as soon as they disassociate themselves from MiniSoros)
November 25th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
And swiftee knows what it takes to be a complete, utter moron: exhibit A.
I’m not sure what insulting me has to do with this discussion.
November 25th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Make ya a deal, Andy.
The day after the USDA adds sand as a food group and publishes a minimum recommended daily allowance, I’ll publish a big apology for ever considering you a moron.
Until then, just take my word for it.
Deal?
November 25th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
This about sums it up for Dems:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFUdBzS–J0
November 25th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I’m not asking you for an apology. Just wondering what the hell insulting me has to do with the Franken campaign’s embargo on live feeds.
I don’t know anybody who eats sand. Do you?
November 25th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Back off, Andy. You’re dealing with a guy who can toss out insulting nicknames at the drop of a hat. You’re outgunned, since politics consists of nothing at all besides calling your opponent names.
November 25th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
I think they were banned because they are obviously biased.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
“Kyle.. can you please explain the meaning of this? Seriously.”
Sure, it means stupid. Unimportant. Frivolous. Without consequence. Infinitesimally small.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
“I don’t know anybody who eats sand. Do you?”
No….think about it.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
BTW, calling you a moron isn’t an insult….it looks good on you.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
What’s biased about a live feed?
November 25th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Chris, don’t be an asshole. I’m sincerely trying to help….work with me here.
November 25th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
They let Brodkorb in, and he’s obviously biased.
November 25th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Jason, when the Coleman people did not allow them to be present at the news conference, they gave them their reason..and Uptake played the video documenting their rejection by Coleman. However, when the Frankin camp did not want them to run with a live feed, I note they did not document that. Why not?
November 25th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
“”They let Brodkorb in, and he’s obviously biased.”" Maybe even an Employee
November 25th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Brodkorb never lied about his bias.
It’s turned into lefty asswipe wack-a-mole in here.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:30 am
“It’s turned into lefty asswipe wack-a-mole in here.”
You’re whacking something, that much is true.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:34 am
More to the point, swiftee, you haven’t demonstrated how running a live feed is biased. But, then, you haven’t really bothered making anything resembling sense. It’s rather interesting to watch. People make comments, and you respond with insults, infantile nicknames, and strange noises and then proudly crow your triumph. Well, kudos to you. When it comes to fourth grade school bully tactics, you really have them mastered.
November 26th, 2008 at 6:50 am
Naomi, it seems The UpTake disclosed it in their live blog on site. I can see why you wouldn’t freak out as much because you can’t live stream, you can only tape delay stream… as compared to being outright banned. However I agree with you– it would have been interesting to see video of someone from the Franken campaign trying to sell that line of BS. I suspect it was handled via a phone call, rather than an in person confrontation.
“10:12 Mike McIntee: Chuck Olsen will be covering the presser at 11:30am today. The reason given for not live streaming is they believe the Coleman campaign watches it and then tailors it’s news conference to respond to what the Franken campaign says. I think it’s a silly restriction, but since it is being applied to all media, we’re abiding.”
November 26th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Ang, have you read this thread? I agreed that the UpTake hasn’t tried to deny they are lefties.
And they are telling the truth when they say they put up raw footage. The bias comes mostly from the footage they decide to shoot.
It’s just like the newspapers deciding to cover one side of a story to make the opposing viewpoint dissapear. Doesn’t mean what they cover isn’t factual, just not complete.
Like I said, the only real objection I have to Chuck & Co. is the cosy relationship they maintain with the sock puppets over at MiniSoros Dependent.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Ang’s comment is gone, Swiftee. A glitch in the software? OR A GAG ORDER?
November 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
MiniSoros Dependent? I’m starting to think your debating skills are limited to not-especially-clever twists on names.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Yes, I read the thread. I was responding to the following line of conversation:
“I think they were banned because they are obviously biased.”
“They let Brodkorb in, and he’s obviously biased.”
“Brodkorb never lied about his bias.”
This implies an opinion that the UpTake was denied access because they’re not forthcoming about their bias.
Also, they would be happy to film the other side of that story if they weren’t banned from doing so.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Now it seems all of Ang’s comments are being deleted. Any reason why, Brodkorb?
November 26th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Well I don’t agree with either the reason or the action. The UpTake is pretty good as lefty media goes.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
chestnut:
“Sure, it means stupid. Unimportant. Frivolous. Without consequence. Infinitesimally small.”
What does that description have to do with “gay”? Are you aware of the crushing damage you do when you call things “gay”?
Dead Serious, please explain you dikk.
