MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “BUDGET DEFICIT OPPORTUNITY FOR REFORM”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | December 5, 2008

I received this press release yesterday afternoon.

###

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement after officials announced the state would face a $4.8 billion deficit in the next biennium.

“The $4.8 billion budget deficit is an imposing figure but presents an opportunity to scrutinize government programs for performance and utility.  The last thing working families in Minnesota need is a tax increase, and the Democrats in the Legislature should join Governor Pawlenty and House and Senate Republicans in looking to fundamental reforms to government programs with a mind for being responsible stewards of our tax dollars.”

    Michael:

With all due respect to Mr. Carey, the impending budget crisis in Minnesota will require some fresh thinking and leadership from both parties to resolve.

A “no tax increase” position will be doomed to failure, so I hope the Governor has the wisdom to compromise.

I’m curious where, then, MnGOP proposes we exclusively cut 5 Billion from the budget.

Carey will likely suggest or at least support a loan from China to solve all the state’s budget shortages around the country. As we have seen from the stimulus plan, this is the best and most thoughtful way to solve all budget issues.

I think we can all agree that the economy is booming sice we got our $600 from Uncle Sam. Just keep borrowing. This is the only responsible way to solve our problems.

Also, since the last thing the families of Minnesota need is a tax increase, let’s do away with all taxes and borrow the money to make up the difference. This is the only answer to keep our booming economy growing at its current out of control rate.

Maybe Ron could identify all the Democrats that are not “one of us”, and tax them to the hilt. That way, the budget deficit could be reduced, and the bad people could be punished.

Sounds like a reasonable approach, eh Ron?

The 308 democrats who are thinking about running against Pawlenty have to be licking their chops right now.

T-Paw’s no-new-taxes mantra has left our government woefully unprepared to deal with current economic realities, and short of selling the eighth congressional district to Canada, and the seventh to the Dakotas, he is so deep into the corner in which he has painted himself, there is no way out.

You can pay as you go, or you can do what T-Paw has done, which is beg, borrow and steal to keep the dream alive that there is no cost to running a government.

His best possible move would be to announce next week that he will not run again, and then do what he actually has to do to fix this mess without worries about the gaping maws of Tom Emmer and Marty Seifert threatening to do him in if he does what actually needs doing.

  6. J.L. Says:
    December 5th, 2008 at 8:24 PM

Right, Leroy. The reason the state is in this mess is because our taxes aren`t high enough. Ok

  7. MO Says:
    December 5th, 2008 at 11:37 PM

PlymouthDem – 15% across the board spending cut. No negotiations. No special interest shenanigans. You had $100 in your budget – fine, you now have $85. Deal with it, just like every family in MN is.

Leroy – last I looked, T-Paw kept the Dems from spending an additional $4B in the last budget, or we would have been twice off as we are now.

    Get a grip.

  8. BC Says:

MO, your sophisticated thinking is truly inspirational. Is that how you balance your personal budget? Do you cut your housing or car payment by the same amount as your entertainment budget?

Each agency should cut the Pawlenty hacks out of government management. Obviously, they cannot manage their budgets or come up with any of the reforms that Carey is asking for. Pawlenty has come up with NOTHING in terms of reform. MN is sadly lacking in the use of technology and e-government. No vision, no execution, but he does catch fish on opener and looks cool in his Hanson Brothers hockey glasses.

With Tim’s VP adventure over with, I think he might do the right thing for the propel of Minnesota.

    Wishful thinking?
