A runoff only occurs in a contested election.

Norm won the election outright, the only reason we had this recount was purely administrative.

If it had been a dead tie I can see a runoff, but Norm won the election on Nov.4th. The results were never contested (except by franken moonbat members who would have cried no matter how much he lost by).

Flash: Runoff is bad! Bad Bad Bad! You get to vote ONE time per election. A protest vote for a no chance in a million candidate has consequences. It means that you chose to use you one and only vote on that candidate. Runoff encourages people to vote for all nature of folly because they going to get a mulligan thanks to the inevitable runoff, especially here in MN where we have a bizzare love of 3rd party candidates. Anything that encourages people to take their vote even less seriously, and to have even less accountability for their actions, is a bad idea. Every yahoo who voted for Barkley now has to live with the consequences of that action.

Yes, that’s how I see it. But the Strib does something different, and the PiPress different yet. And with over 6000 outstanding challenged ballots, unless the final recount lead is well over 1000, we won’t know anything more tonight then we did a few days after the election.

I used to be a leans IRV kind of guy, but if folks can’t even color in circles, imagine the nightmare of explaining to them how to rank candidates.

I hope the legislature considers a runoff process like Georgia.

Thanks for the explanation, Flash. I couldn’t figure it out. So to measure the gain or loss for the candidates, you need to look at the difference in the vote count on 11/4 vs last night.

So in those precincts, the clown was ahead by 4648 on 11/4 and is ahead by 4658 now, so he’s picked up 10. This suggests that the outstanding precincts went heavily for Coleman. Right?

Yes! The Nov 4 count, once at 100% should match the canvassed numbers and show Coleman’s 215 lead. The recount numbers will be whatever the are, with the challenged ballots outstanding.

Ranger, at the SoS site they post two sets of numbers only considering the precincts recounted and then show the votes from A) Election night, and B) recount numbers. So of the 98.8 ballots recounted, those ballots cast on Nov 4th were:

Nov. 4 Ballots Cast for Norm Coleman 1195885
Nov. 4 Ballots Cast for Al Franken 1200533

and the recounted numbers, which is sans challenged ballots, you have:

RECOUNT Number for Coleman 1193307 41.33
RECOUNT Number for Franken 1197965 41.49

So the confusion is you are thinking 100% final numbers, but those Nov 4 counts are only of the 98.88 ballots and their results before and after.

I do not understand the totals on SOS site. Did Al really win on Nov. 4? Is he still ahead after recounting 98.88%? What is with this site?
