COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE PRESS RELEASE: “COLEMAN CAMPAIGN SAYS NO EXPIRATION DATE ON COUNTING VALID VOTES”
By Michael B. Brodkorb | December 31, 2008

St. Paul – Coleman for Senate lead counsel Fritz Knaak issued the following statement in response to today’s statement made by the Secretary of State’s office, as well as the continued actions of the Franken campaign, that would put an expiration date on counting valid votes.
“There can be no substitute for an accurate count – and being 90% complete does not make a recount 100% accurate. There should be no reason for the Secretary of State’s office to do anything other than join with us in ensuring that Minnesota voters are not being disenfranchised because of an overeager effort to close the books on some voter’s ballots. Within the last hour the Secretary of State’s office has issued a declaration that clearly supports the Franken campaign’s posture that the only ballots that should count are the ballots the Franken campaign wants to count. Furthermore, we’ve now received notice that the Secretary of State has unilaterally scheduled a date to open rejected absentee ballots without consulting our campaign. We reject the notion that speed is more important than accuracy. And, we clearly reject the premise that the Franken campaign and the Secretary of State’s office can decide there is an expiration date on the right of any Minnesotan’s vote to count in this election.“

I agree with the Coleman campaign that all valid ballots should be counted, so we can congratulate the winner and wish him well. However, their stalling tactics and refusal to accept the will of the people smacks of desperation.
