WHAT IS THE RUSH?

By Ryan Flynn | January 15, 2009

Much has been made this week about Al Franken seeking to be seated in the US Senate.  A seat that he has not won yet and does not hold an election certificate for.

Other than what has already been written on this topic, what is the rush from team Franken to get him seated in the US Senate?  Franken has taken zero public stances on major issues that will be coming up before the Senate, the stimulus bill, the Obama tax plan etc.  It is not as if the rush is to get to work on behalf of the Minnesotans he so longs to serve.

Al Franken is a man that has had one intention this entire time, and that is to be able to have the title of Senator in front of his name and a nice office with a staff on Capitol Hill.

If he were truly serious about getting seated in the Senate to get to work for Minnesotans, he would be talking to Minnesotans about the issues in front of the Congress right now.  That would be asking for too much though from a man who really does not care about the state he has set out to serve.  Keep in mind this is the man who said New York would always be his “home” or who had trouble naming anyone from Minnesota’s congressional delegation as recently as 2004.

In fact, Al Franken is following the events in Washington DC very closely. As I am sure Norm Coleman is.

Why is so surprising that he wants to be seated as quickly as possible? He just spent the last two years of his life campainging hard for this seat and the State Canvassing Board has concluded the recount and determined that he won the election by 225 votes. A new President that he enthusiastically supported is taking office, a new agenda (most of which he generally supports) from that President but which must first go through Congress is on deck, his colleague in the Senate (Sen. Klobuchar) has been forced to add extra staff to compensate for the absent senator, and a genuine desire to get to work for the people of Minnesota are all driving Al Franken!

And you can’t understand why there’s a “rush” by the Franken team to get him seated?

C’mon, you’re way to smart to pose such a silly question!

Jim, I do not make a habit of responding to the comments here but it is the “genuine desire to get to work for the people of Minnesota” line that is complete bs. This man wants the title of Senator, that is what is driving him.

Minnesotans are owed making sure this thing is done correctly, both men having spent two years campaigning can certainly wait one or two more months for an official result.

“…but it is the “genuine desire to get to work for the people of Minnesota” line that is complete bs.”

Agreed. The moment ol’ Smokescreen said it, last November 5th, I said the exact same thing.

But it’s really funny how – to Team Smokescreen – that when Franken says it, it’s BS; but when Coleman says it, it’s believable.

“Al Franken is a man that has had one intention this entire time, and that is to be able to have the title of Senator in front of his name and a nice office with a staff on Capitol Hill.”

    You got typos.

Norm Coleman is a man that has had one intention this entire time, and that is to be able to keep the title of Senator in front of his name and a nice office with a staff on Capitol Hill.

Oh, and ya left this part out: Norm Coleman has depended on a government paycheck his entire adult life, and he sure doesn’t want that to stop now.

Minnesota has a right to a senator, and that’s the rush. I think it is important for the election contest to take it’s course, but at some point, Minnesota will need a second senator, if only on a provisional basis.

  6. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 4:46 PM

Norm Coleman is suing on the off chance that he can pick up 226 votes.

Al Franken is suing on the off chance that the court will believe that the constitution trumps state law.

What differentiates the two? Both are exhausting every legal remedy possible to cause the outcome they and their followers seek.

Would you prefer that only people you agree with are afforded the right to file lawsuits?

  7. Karen Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Norm isn’t required to pick up 226 votes to still emerge victorious. The deficit may first be reduced after including wrongfully rejected absentee ballots. If Norm’s legal team can then demonstrate that the results are tainted by double counting votes and other irregularities, the election can be declared invalid if they can’t determine the appropriate adjustments. The irregularities must be substantial enough to likely erase the vote deficit.

If the election is voided, then the senate seat becomes vacant and the governor appoints a senator.

  8. Troy Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 5:40 PM

Speaking of “smokescreen”, what is your idol George Galloway doing these days, Tommy Johnson?

  9. Chris Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 5:46 PM

I have to say that this post is a little silly. You know damned well that if the shoe were on the other foot, we’d all be yelling, “Concede!”

As for Two Putz, I have to laugh. Since when did Democrats start demonizing working for the government? You should be applauding the fact that Norm’s worked in government his whole life. That’s what you all believe in.

  10. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Galloway is probably wondering why ol’ Smokescreen never bothered to investigate the war profiteering in Iraq.

A lot of people are wondering that.

Apparently, ol’ Smokescreen feels that it’s ok to investigate the looting of the UN, but NOT the USA.

Everybody realizes Norm headed the Truman Committee, “right>?

Missouri Senator Harry S. Truman chairs a Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program. The ‘Truman Committee’ saved taxpayers millions of dollars by reducing waste and corruption among miliary contractors. 11. AC Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Ryan, you are a tool. If Franken did any of the things you say he should be doing, you and Michael and everyone else in charge of this site would be all over Franken for jumping the gun, “playing” senator, doing senatorial things when he hasn’t been elected, etc.

Make up your mind. You can’t have it both ways.

  12. Troy Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 6:07 PM

So, you admit he is your idol then? That is interesting!

More whining about what he didn’t do? Is this something new, or are you (as you typically are) repeating old arguments that have long been sunk? Honestly, you don’t even beat dead horses, you kick around a bag of horse bones and expect it to take you somewhere. *shrug*

  13. SwifteeBoatee Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Yeah, what’s the rush, Ryan? In fact, why even have two senators at all? Just give Amy a little bump in salary and staff and dispense with the office altogether. We’ll get the Senate down to a size so small we can drown it in a bathtub, right Ryan?

  14. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 7:30 PM

Go with that, Troy. Coleman was almost as lousy a Senator, as Boy Blunder was President.

    Almost.

Because “worst” cannot be spelled without Dubya.

  15. J.L. Says:
    January 15th, 2009 at 8:05 PM

And “idiot” can`t be spelled without T.J.

    Quicksand–

With all due respect, YOU are the idiot, as in:

    “you’re and idiot”

Nice work. Did you ever graduate from grade school?

Oh for Joy! Another moonbat comes to MDE waiting for someone to make a typo.

Sounds like the work of danbrome to me.

danbrome syndrome: When one who is on the losing side of an argument resorts to attacking opponents for spelling, grammar or typographical errors.

  20. danbrome Says:
    January 16th, 2009 at 12:45 PM

    What is the gaydar?

    Care to explain Einstein?

  21. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 16th, 2009 at 2:16 PM

Dan, a “gaydar” is an alarm that goes off when hypocritical republiCons loudly proclaim they aren’t “gay.”

It’s often met with loud, disbelieving laughter from normal, reasonable people – such as when Larry Craig, the republiCon senator from Idaho, proclaimed “I’m not gay, nor have I ever been gay (and that was a simple misunderstanding at the airport!!!)”.

The louder the denial, the more audible the tone the “gaydar” makes.

Mark Foley damn near broke the “gaydar” – as did noted homophobe Ted Haggard.

All in all, the “gaydar” is quite an effective device for demonstrating the hypocrisy in the GOP.

  22. chili Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 9:03 AM

    danbrome

You asked a legitimate question of Einstein. Unfortunately, Tommy Johnson chose to respond. Here is a definition of gaydar from dictionary.com

    Main Entry: gaydar
    Part of Speech: n
Definition: an intuition about whether someone is homosexual; a homosexual person’s ability to identify other homosexuals through intuition or interpretation of signals
    Etymology: 1992; gay + radar
    Usage: slang

  23. danbrome Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 12:46 PM

    chili..

so what does gaydar have to do with me?

  24. chili Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 7:55 AM

    danbrome,

You asked a question and I provided an answer using a relible on-line reference.

Unfortunatley, I could not find a source that defines words by how they relate specifically to danbrome.

Can anyone else answer danbrome’s question?
