SWEET: DAYTON THE COWARD FILES PAPERWORK TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR

By Michael B. Brodkorb | January 16, 2009

“Former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton filed papers with the state on Friday to launch his campaign for governor in 2010, joining a growing list of DFLers seeking the office.

Dayton, 61, a Minneapolis DFLer who served one term in the U.S. Senate and did not seek reelection, said that as governor he would focus on improving funding for education and on refurbishing a state highway and road system ‘that is now starting to resemble ones I’ve been on in Third World countries.’” Source: Star Tribune, January 16, 2009

“Dayton was elected to the Senate in 2000, defeating incumbent Republican Sen. Rod Grams. In early 2005, facing an uphill fight for reelection, he abruptly announced that he would give up his seat when his term expired in January 2007, criticizing the seniority-driven politics of the Senate but hinting even then that he was considering a run for governor.

Dayton’s popularity took a big hit when he decided to temporarily close his Washington office in 2004, fearing a possible terrorist strike against the Capitol.” Source: Star Tribune, January 16, 2009

So Dayton wants more funding for education? Isn’t 42% of the state’s entire budget enough? It’s a big black hole that we keep throwing money at with no improvement. Sounds like a typical DFL money pit.

I’m curious why you highlighted the qiuote about the poor quality of our roads?

Are the republicans truly proud of how bad our roads and bridges have become?

  3. SwifteeBoatee Says:

Isn’t Rod Grams running for state party chair? Or is he running for governor? Good luck with that, Rod. Did he ever pay off those contractors he stiffed years ago? Is his kid out of prison yet? Is Rod still married to his campaign manager who he left his wife for? Is Rod still the Family Values Candidate? This Rod Grams?

    Mark Dayton as Governor?

My God just that one thought will produce months of nightmares.

Hopefully to millions of other Minnesotan’s as well. If he is the Democrat candidate maybe he will campaign on Halloween door to door and scare numerous Senior citizen cardiac arrests.

  5. Proud Republican Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 12:41 AM

    Of course I meant….

scare numerous Senior-citizens into cardiac arrest.

    Dash

When is the last time a DFL candidate didn’t start off with the more education money mantra?

This is necessary to get PAC money from Educaton Minnesota.

    Leroy, you jackass,

“Are the republicans truly proud of how bad our roads and bridges have become?”

Republican’s are ashamed that tranportation money get used to pay for things like light rail choo-choos.

  7. Dash Riprock Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 7:50 AM

    Chili:

It’s always the same excuse, “It’s for the children”, when they see an opportunity to fleece the taxpayer for more money.

Just as the green movement and global warming crowd try to make people think they are concerned about the environment, the education phonies use children as an excuse for more power and social engineering.

My wife is a teacher, and I see first hand how the union tries to scam Minnesota for more money. If education was a business, they would have filed for bankruptcy a long time ago and the majority of management would have been fired for incompetency.

  8. jbenson2 Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 8:44 AM

Dayton is crying for more money (he is another greedy DFL of course) to refurbishing a state highway and road system “that is now starting to resemble ones I’ve been on in Third World countries.”

He certainly sounds like a racist with his ugly comparison.

What’s he want? – streets paved with gold? or maybe he just wants to line the pockets of the union members with gold so he can take a slice off the top.

He should get off his high horse and visit the real world. Check out Boston or New York City after a few miserable dustings of snow. The roads there are falling apart and full of pot holes.

  9. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 9:26 AM

    Jbenson-

Why would he need to go to Boston or New York to see bad roads. The quality of roads and bridges in this state is deplorable. And as much as you and Chili may want to try and deflect by blaming light rail, the fact remains that the trains are packed, and the light rail is bringing in more money than even the most optimistic projections. It must be all those people who don’t want to risk their vehicles driving on the roads Tim Pawlenty has neglected for us.

  10. Mr. D Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 9:40 AM

the fact remains that the trains are packed, and the light rail is bringing in more money than even the most optimistic projections.

So they’re paying for themselves, then? Maybe even making money? Good to know!

  11. Dash Riprock Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 9:45 AM

I’m just glad Oberstar was able to get a great bike path for millions of tax dollars up north.

Also, why is Oberstar trying to delay the Cape Wind project off Hyannis Port, Massachusets? Apparently, he blocked the release of a report by the Coast Guard that would give the approval of the project, that includes 130 wind turbines off shore in the sound.

Looks like Ted Kennedy and his nephew have been able to sway the Minnesota congressman. I guess the clean green power they both support is really a lie.

Democrats showing their true colors again with their total hypocrisy.

  12. chili Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 10:21 AM

Leroy, you jackass, how is pointing out that the state has wasted money on LRT, a “deflection.”

That is money that should have gone to roads and bridges. The state continues to spend several dollars per rider to subsidize light rail.

Leroy, you jackass, do you have a financial interest in LRT that should be disclosed?

  13. Zelly Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 10:46 AM

I’m gonna have to agree with Mike and anyone else here … Dayton would not be a good governor.

  14. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:02 AM

    Leroy,

Our roads and bridges are in terrible shape? Now that is hilarious! Under Pawlenty, we’ve spent more on roads and bridges than the last two governors combined. It’s always amazing to hear complaints about roads and bridges from the party who diverts hundreds of millions of dollars away from roads and bridges and into transit and light rail. If you’d like to say no to the unnecessary University Ave. corridor light rail boondoggle and divert the billion or so dollars to roads and bridges, I’d agree with you wholeheartedly.

Let me remind you that the reason the I-35W bridge collapsed was because of a design/materials flaw (ie. a thin gusset plate) from some 40 years ago.

  15. jimj Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:47 AM

Chris, don’t try to use logic with these DFL hacks. They are a bunch of bought off shills who just “HATE” anyone opposes or refutes them.

  16. danbrome Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 12:14 PM

    Chris..

Open your eyes… you must be dreaming if you are satisfied with the condition of Minnesota roads and bridges. Oh I know, it has nothing to do with Republican politics, so save your breath.

  17. danbrome Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 12:15 PM

    jimj..

Could you explain how I have been bought off?

  18. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 12:34 PM

    danbrome,

It’s not a question of being satisfied or not. It’s about pointing out how your side attacks Pawlenty for not spending money on roads and bridges (he has) as well as pointing out how your side has diverted hundreds of millions of dollars from roads and bridges to bike trails, light rail and transit.

I’m actually not satisfied with our roads. See, I think we should have a freeway system that has at least five lanes in each direction like every other respectable metropolitan area in our country. The problem is that Democrats seek to block more freeway lanes to try to force people into buses and light rail.

  19. chili Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 12:38 PM

    danbrome

As long as you carry the piss bucket for the likes of Madia and Franken, you can get close enought to whiff their man-scent. That is reward enough for you.

Mark Dayton is your type of coward. I hope you enjoy his pheromones.

  20. jbenson2 Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Leroy asks “Why would he need to go to Boston or New York to see bad roads. The quality of roads and bridges in this state is deplorable.”

Because if you ever lived there, you would realize the streets in Minnesota are heaven compared to the never-ending and bottomless pot holes that the Bay State and NYC are famous for.

  21. danbrome Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 1:45 PM

    chili..

You are a vile person in need of help.

  22. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 4:13 PM

    danbrome,

Why do you just come here to call people names? I realize you’ve had a few names thrown at you too. But I raised several issues that you didn’t even address. If you’re interested in free debate, that’s one thing. If you’re only interested in flame wars, then you probably have too much time on your hands and your wife and children would be better served by you staying away from here.

  23. J.L. Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 7:12 PM

As you said, Chris, they are calling you names because they can`t refute your exellent points (facts) on the road situation talked about earlier. It just kills them that Pawlenty spent more on roads, you said above, except that he did it without raising taxes, until the RINO`s helped to over-ride his veto. Remember, nothing good can be acknowledged except that which was helped along by the raising of taxes.

  24. Dash Riprock Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 8:44 PM

    Hey dan,

Chili’s comments are less vile than what you have called me and others here. Why the double standard?

  25. Greg Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 9:46 PM

Did Mr. D say light rail pays for itself? What a clueless moron. There is not a single light rail system in the country that breaks even. Every system is a drain on the taxpayer.

I take the light rail to see Twins and Vikings games. I avoid gas costs and parking costs and it’s nice to avoid traffic issues.

I want to thank all the liberal morons in Minnesota for making this possible for me to save money at your expense. I make enough dough to invest in municipal securities and avoid paying the excessive Minnesota taxes the rest of you morons pay for me. Thank you very much, chumps.

Thank you. Keep it up. Life is good.

  26. danbrome Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 9:57 PM

You know, and I know that I have received many more BOMBS here than I could ever deram of launching myself.

Can we be honest about that for a change?

  27. danbrome Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 9:57 PM

I am confident the group can sort this out.

  28. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 10:09 PM

    danbrome,

I’ll sort it out for you. You’re a fool. You’ve dodged every policy argument I’ve raised in favor of this immature piddly school yard pissing contest. You add nothing substantive here. As I said, why don’t you do something better with your time. I’m sure your wife would be relieved.

  29. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 10:16 PM

    Greg,

You’re exactly right. Every metropolitan area, including Washington, D.C. and NYC, subsidizes the hell out of their light rail systems. Senator Day once called the Hiawatha Line, the train to nowhere. Now he calls it the Entertainment Train because the majority of the traffic is at nights and on weekends when there are Twins, Vikings, T-Wolves games and rock concerts, etc. We could have added lanes to 394 for what it cost to build the Hiawatha Line.

  30. danbrome Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 10:16 PM

    What are you talking about?

Just because you draft 500 word essays does NOT mean you have a clue! Get serious.

  31. Pete F Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 10:37 PM

danbrome never has anything of substance to add to any discussion on this site. He constantly whines about how people attack him but in truth is nothing more than an internet troll who comes on this site to disrupt, not contribute to, the conversation.

danbrome, puddles, leroy, all the lefties who post here do so to keep the discussion at the lowest possible level. Thier biggest fear is that conservatives communicate effectively with each other.

What we need is a conservative site that does not allow these trolls to disrupt conservative conversation. A site dedicated to conservative discussion would allow those of us who wish to begin rebuilding the party at the grassroots level do so without their disruptions.

The timing is right to ban these trolls from MDE.

  32. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 10:45 PM

I see the GOPers here – as usual – are playing loose with the facts. Let’s look at just one distortion:

It just kills them that Pawlenty spent more on roads, you said above, except that he did it without raising taxes

Here’s what Governor Pawlenty’s website has to say:

Governor Pawlenty’s 2007 transportation proposal would have infused $1.7 billion in bonding

So, why do I say that GOPers are distorting?

Because, here’s what that GOPer post should have read, if he wanted to be accurate:

except that he did it by borrowing money, because that’s today’s GreedOverPrinciples fiscal policy: borrow and spend, and let some other poor sucker pay the bill later.

  33. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:04 PM

    Two Putz,

You’re a joke! Nancy Pelosi, B. Hussein Obama, Harry Reid et al. are going to borrow over $800 billion dollars to do the same thing as Pawlenty. Only Pawlenty builds roads based on MNDOT priorities whereas Congress is going to spend money in Members’ districts for political gain. You cannot bitch one word about deficit spending or borrowing money when we have a $1 trillion deficit in 2008 thanks to Democrats in Congress.

I’m so sick of hearing Democrats like you whine about borrowing for roads. You don’t mind borrowing for Community Centers, science labs at the U, sports stadiums, swimming pools, the zoo, a sheet music library, the Walker, the Schubert Theater, etc., etc., etc. If it’s okay to bond for a stadium that’s going to last 20 years, why isn’t it okay to bond for roads that will last just as long? The reason is because Pawlenty is doing it instead of a liberal Democrat. You’re such a hypocrite, Two Putz.

  34. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:05 PM

    danbrome,

    You’re an idiot. Go away.

  35. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:07 PM

    P.S. Two Putz,

The Federal Government borrowed money for the Hiawatha Line and will borrow money for the Central Corridor Line. Will you oppose the Central Corridor Line since it’s going to be paid for by future generations?

  36. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:10 PM

    Damn, you’re stupid, Chris.

We have a $1 trillion deficit because of the misAdministration of Boy Blunder And The Plunderers.

It shouldn’t surprise me that you’re going to claim that trillion deficit started in 2006; reasonable people cannot reasonably rely on republiCons – such as you, Chris – to tell the truth.

And reasonable people know that republiCons would rather borrow money for roads, than pay for them now by an 8 cent a gallon tax.

Seems that those democrats that voted to tax and spend have a lot more seats in the state house, state senate, and state offices than your side does.

In other words, Chris – voters don’t like your ilk very much at all.

  37. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:18 PM

    Two Putz,

That’s bullshit and you know it. We have a trillion dollar deficit because Congress created a problem with Freddie and Fanny that Bush tried to rein in and was blocked.

As for the gas tax, only DemocRATS like you would think it’s a great idea to add 8 cents to a gallon of gas when gas is $3.50 a gallon. Why should we punish people for driving instead of spreading out the cost of a road over a road’s lifetime. Only idiots think that you should only build or buy a house if you have all of the cash up front. Why should a road be any different?

I hope all you fucking Democrats raise everyone’s taxes then we’ll see who’s ilk is despised by the voters in the future. The Democrat party is the party of reckless fiscal policies that are about to bankrupt our country. Obama has said that he’s going to have trillion dollar deficits for years to come. Only idiots like you think we can tax and spend our way to prosperity.

  38. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:21 PM

And by the way, I hope you never set foot in the Twins stadium. It’s not going to be paid for, for at least twenty years. You’d be a hypocrite if you ever went to a Twins game. The DemocRATS in Hennepin County should have raised the taxes on every household $1,000 to pay for that stadium and if the people couldn’t afford it, then fuck em.

  39. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:22 PM

Close, Chris – but no cigar!

The Republican party is the party of reckless fiscal policies that would have bankrupted our country. Fortunately, the voters tossed the bums out and gave control of The White House, the Senate, the Congress, the State House, the State Senate, and all but one State Consititutional Office to the Democrats.

And in 2010, it will be complete as Democrats take back the Governor’s office.

Face it, Chris – voters don’t like your ilk very much at all.

  40. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:24 PM

Why should a road be any different?

Because it can be paid for now, by the gallon, and the taxpayers won’t have to pay interest.

    Damn, you’re stupid, Chris.

  41. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:29 PM

    Two Putz,

Bullshit. A road is no different than a building or any other piece of infrastructure. A building at the U can be paid for now just as much as a road.

What you’re too stupid to understand is that we need more roads than we have money for because greedy metro DFLers insist on spending hundreds of millions of dollars for transit and billions of dollars on light rail that nobody takes. We haven’t built roads in recent administrations – and when we did, we built them up north for Rudy Perpich and not in the parts of the state where they were needed.

The problem with building roads as you’d want them is that you can’t possibly tax enough to pay for $1.7 billion needed in one year. So you only build a few hundred million each year even if that means that the project takes 10 years to finish. And guess what, it’s a hell of a lot cheaper to build a road all at once (and borrow the money) than to build it in phases over a decade and pay many times the cost in land acquisition and materials.

But then again, only an idiot who just wants to tax the shit out of everybody can’t understand this.

  42. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:32 PM

    Two Putz,

We have a trillion dollar deficit because Democrats have been in charge of the Congress for the last two years and they’ve f–ed everything up. I can’t wait till Bush gets out of office so you people won’t be able to blame him anymore for you’re own f-ups. You must really think people are stupid if they believe that DemocRATs have had nothing to do with the deficit when they are the ones who pass the appropriations.

  43. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:34 PM

The problem with building roads as you’d want them is that you can’t possibly tax enough to pay for $1.7 billion needed in one year.

Chris, you’re the poster boy for intellectual dishonesty.

We needed 1.7 because of all the deferred needs – deferred by the GOP. And they weredeferred because the gas tax hadn’t been raised for damn near 20 years.

Go next door, to Wisconsin, and check out their roads – much better.

Why? Because they’ve been increasing gas taxes over the years to keep up.

And you still haven’t acknowledged that the voters overwhelmingly rejected your party the last two electoral cycles – because your party failed miserably.

  44. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:37 PM

You must really think people are stupid if they believe that DemocRATs have had nothing to do with the deficit when they are the ones who pass the appropriations.

    REVISIONIST HISTORY ALERT!

Chris, your party held The White House for the first six years of this decade, the House for those same six, and the Senate for most of ‘em.

Would you care to tell the viewing audience exactly how many spending bills Dumbya veto’d during those six years?

Here’s a hint – it’s lower than your IQ, but not by much.

  45. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:40 PM

    Two Putz,

That’s bullshit. Tim Pawlenty has been the first Governor in decades who’s actually built roads. It’s amazing how you can come on here and claim that Republicans weren’t building roads when it was DemocRATS like you and your “ilk” who decided we didn’t need any more roads.

And don’t tell me that isn’t the case because it sure the hell has been. See, unlike you I live in the real world. The real world where Highway 14 has been debated for the last 25 years. That’s right, 25 years ago highway 14 was going to be expanded to 4 lane from Mankato to Rochester. Only it wasn’t until Pawlenty that the expansion started to take place. Don’t you think that it would have been a hell of a lot cheaper to expand Highway 14 twenty-five years ago than today?

As for Wisconsin, I have been there and I don’t think their roads are any better than ours. They don’t have a single metropolitan area as large as ours that had a four lane beltway until Pawlenty took office. But since you’re touting Wisconsin, then know this: Wisconsin has 600,000 more people than Minnesota and we spend $4-$5 billion a biennium more than Wisconsin does.

Then again you wouldn’t know that because all you know is what you’re told to think by the DemocRATS.

  46. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:41 PM

    Two Putz,

Go fuck yourself. The deficit didn’t soar to a trillion until you ilk took over.

  47. Chris Says:
    January 17th, 2009 at 11:46 PM

    P.S. Two Putz,

It was also incompetent DemocRATS like you who built the I-35W bridge that collapsed and the Crosstown freeway that’s caused nothing but congestion since the day it was built.

  48. Greg Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 12:44 AM

    Morons

You’re all noise. This is all vanity. Vanity of vanities. Get a true life – one that matters and endures.

  49. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 10:34 AM

Quick question: Does I-94 pay for itself, or do we subsidize the hell out of it?

  50. Chris Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 11:19 AM

    Leory,

That’s an easy question to answer. Interstates are paid for by both federal and state gas taxes. The construction and repair of those roads come from those dedicated funds. There is a small amount of maintenance like snowplowing that comes out of the general fund. That’s completely different from transit which is largely funded by subsidies from the general fund. Only a small percentage of the transit budget comes from fares.

  51. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Chris, Go (cheney) yourself. President Clinton left office with “surpluses as far as the eye can see” – and Boy Blunder And The Plunderers promptly blew that away.

With the GOP in charge, all Americans saw was red ink – with said color matching the color of your necks.

GOP mismanagement created this FUBAR, and now it’s time for the grownups to fix it.

Wallow in your misery, as you remain in the minority for the old fashioned reason: you EARNED it.

  52. Chris Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 11:37 AM

    Two Putz,

You’re stupid. I guess you forgot about the recession Bush inherited from the outgoing Clinton administration. I guess you forgot about 9/11 and the trillions of dollars that evaporated from our economy overnight.

But most importantly I guess you’ve forgotten who has been in charge of Congress for the past two years and when we started having trillion dollar annual deficits. But go ahead and be a partisan prick. The American people aren’t going to be too happy when assholes like you don’t change a damn thing for the better and things only get worse.

I’ll say it takes a lot of balls to be so crooked as you are as to blame Bush for the mess we’re in when Democrats in Congress have created it and propose to spend even more for many years to come.

  53. chili Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 11:37 AM

    Good question Leroy, you Jackass.

I-94 is part the the National Highway system so it does recieve federal funding. Drivers pay for this funding at the gas pump.

As far as state funding, drivers also pay for this at the pump. Drivers also pay the state through vehicle excise taxes/fees & registration taxes/fees. The truth is most of this money doesn’t go to roads and bridges.

Regardless, we need I-94. We don’t need LRT.

Hundreds of public transit buses use 94 everyday. These are vehicles that are exempt from almost every tax. Transit buses are freeloaders when it comes to paying for roads and bridges.

Leroy, stop being a jackass for a moment and consider what would happen to state commerce if I-94 didn’t exist.

    Damn, you’re stupid, Chris.

Republicans run on the platform “government doesn’t work” – and when they’re in the majority, they prove it.

The majority of voters know – KNOW – that it’s the GOP majorities that created this FUBAR, and they know “worst” cannot be spelled without Dubya.

I never thought I’d see the day Richard “I am not a crook” Nixon wasn’t the worst president ever – but along came Dumbya.

The recession Bush inhereted, is nothing like the recession GOP mismanagement has created.

You bring up 911 – yes, it happened on Bush’s watch, and yes, it caused economic problems.

But the real fiasco is the ecomonic problems Boy Blunder created, by entering into a War Of Choice in Iraq.

Everybody knows that – except, of course, bootlickers like you.

  56. Chris Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 12:09 PM

    Two Putz,

What does the economic collapse caused by the regulation of the housing market via Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae (and written by Democrats) have to do with the war in Iraq? The economic collapse has cost more than all of the wars in U.S. history combined. When will Democrats like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd take responsibility for the mess they created?

  57. Tommy Johnson Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 12:14 PM

Chris, you stupid (cheney) – the problems at Fannie and Freddie were LACK of regulation, which assholes like that prick at Countrywide exploited.

Everytime you dumb(cheney)s deregulate, there’s a scandal – like at the S&L’s when Uncle Ronnie gave crooks like Neil Bush the keys to the vault at Silverado.

We don’t need more laws; we just need existing laws enforced. Which is why GOPers need to be in the minority; they simply don’t believe in enforcing laws on themselves.

  58. Pete F Says:

Tommy, the Democrats have been in charge for the past two years. Specifically what have they done to prevent these probems for occurring during this time period? (Complaining with no action does not count.)

Knowing Tommy he will come back with all kinds of cute little insults instead of a thought out honest response.

But hey, I thought I would at least try…

  59. Chris Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 12:37 PM

    Two Putz,

That’s bullshit. It was the overregulation of Freddie and Fannie, which mandated a certain percentage of subprime loans which caused the collapse to occur.

I’d like to point out that the biggest crooks of the last twenty years – people like Bernie Madoff and Ken Lay were all Democrats. You’re just another apologist for your party’s failures.

    P.S. Two Putz,

If Republicans were responsible for the economic collapse and for the misdeeds at Freddie and Fannie, then why haven’t Chris Dodd and Barney Frank began investigations and held hearings into the Republicans actions? Could it be that they don’t want to expose Democrats like Franklin Raines, and Rahm Emanuel who ran Freddie into the ground (in the case of Raines) and had oversight of the running of Freddie into the ground (in the case of Emanuel who was on the board of directors)?

I really wish you would call up your buddies Chris Dodd and Barney Frank and demand an investigation into Republicans’ role in the collapse. The silence coming from them is deafening.

Oh, and about Franklin Raines? He appeared before a congressional subcommittee in – drum roll, please! – October, 2004.

Remind me which party was the majority party in 2004, will you, Chris?

Now, the point is: the problem was out there for all to see in 2004, and just what did this misAdministration do?

Here’s a hint – it’s below your IQ, Chris – but, not by much.

  68. Chris Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 1:16 PM

George Soros programmed you, Two Putz. You know full well that Chris Dodd blocked legislation to change the mortgage rules under Freddie and Fannie. It’s amazing you would blame Countrywide for this problem because Countrywide was a small player in the mess compared to Freddie and Fannie.

Again, if your false version of events were true, why hasn’t Dodd and Frank began an investigation and hauled every Republican associated with banking in front of their committees? It sure as hell isn’t because they’re nice and decent people. They know that rabid ranters and ravers like you are their constituency and that you would love to see Republicans criminally prosecuted. Clinton was also clueless that these terrorists were being funneled money from the Middle East to learn to speak English and take flying lessons.

I blame Clinton for 9/11. I also blame for being inept before the attacks, and outright un-American after.

You need to learn about the Community Reinvestment Act before you speak on the banking crisis. This was a social program that began with Carter, and grew with the support of Barney Frank, Cris Dodd, Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Biden …

    (1) assess the institution’s record of meeting the credit needs of its entire community, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, consistent with the safe and sound operation of such institution;”

Congress’ approval rating on the slide
    By Andrea Stone, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Fewer Americans approve of the way Congress is handling its job than at any time since shortly after Republicans impeached President Clinton, a Gallup Poll finds.

It was the worst showing for Congress since September 1999, the year after the Republican-controlled House of Representatives impeached Clinton. USA Today

The American public strongly disaproved the way republiCons ran contgress this decade, and the reason the rating went lower is there are still republiCons in Congress.

The American Voters spoke, and now the GOP is in the minority because GOP now stands for GreedOverPrinciples.

What a funny bunch of people. After reading through this mess, a couple comments…
    1) Mark Dayton is an odd guy, but he is the cheapest administrator in history as least when he was commissioner of economic development and as state auditor. He closed his office out of concern for his staff; is that a bad thing?

Tim Pawlenty did build a bunch of roads – with borrowing against future federal dollars and by skimming the maintenance budget. We now have no federal dollars coming in and our roads are in tough shape. If anyone can deny that, they are not getting around the metro and around the state.

Every significant metro area is investing in trains. Denver, Dallas, Houston, San Diego. In spite of the real estate slump, development continues to be planned for the Hiawatha Light Rail corridor with that public investment leveraging private sector investment.

The 2000 recession was a burp, barely noticed.

9/11 happened on Bush’s watch. Get over it. No one blames the Iran hostage taking on Nixon. If Bush had actually met with the anti-terror staff, they might have had a better chance of stopping 9/11. After all, the FBI did arrest a guy taking lessons to fly large planes and not worry about landing them. Bush’s primary concern was Iraq and North Korea.

Barney Frank could not have blocked Fannie Mae regulation as a member of the House minority prior to 2006.

The Bush team has had a series of growing deficits since they took office. The bailout effort was led by Bush’s team. Congress cooperated.

The problem with republicans recently is that they cannot recognize a growing problem until it is a crisis because their philosophical blinders never come off.

  86. Jeff Fecke Says:
    January 18th, 2009 at 8:32 PM

The CRA was, at best, a minor factor in the housing collapse — as were Fannie and Freddie, for that matter. Indeed, the major problem with the collapse was the securitization of loans, which spread the risk out so that everyone had it, and removed the incentive for lenders like Ameriquest and Countrywide to make sure that their loans were to credit-worthy individuals.

Instead, mortgage-backed securities proliferated, spread throughout the financial services industry, and when the bottom fell out, they took absolutely everyone down with them. Fannie and Freddie were big failures, don’t get me wrong — but they pale in comparison to the larger problems created by inadequately regulated securities.

Of course, if one recognizes that, one has to realize that the real villains in the mortgage crisis were rich, white people from good schools, instead of poor black folk. And the GOP certainly wouldn’t want to attack rich, white people when they could attack poor, black people. It goes against their very nature.

So people scream “Freddie” and “Fannie” when they have no real idea of what’s going on, or why. And frankly, it simply reveals a staggering depth of ignorance. CRA loans have a better repayment history than most mortgages; they represent a tiny fraction of the total number of mortgages given out. If every CRA loan was defaulted on tomorrow, it would be a serious — but not devastating — blow to the economy. Anyone putting the finger on CRA, Fannie, or Freddie is simply using partisan buzzwords to cover their lack of understanding of the overall problem. And I wish they’d just admit their ignorance, and go read something. Anything.

    Tubby Tommy,

TCF is really a very small player in the U.S. Banking Industry. Just like you are a very small (but physically very fat) player on the Minnesota Blogging scene. What a stupid example to use.

Jeff Fecke, The CRA was a tool of social engineering. By putting people in homes they could not afford, artificial demand was created. This help feed the inflation of housing prices. Some, had been predicting for years that the housing bubble would burst. And burst it did, and Barney Frank and Chris Dodd watched in denial.

Tubby and Jeff, this proves why social engineering doesn’t work.
