CHRIS COLEMAN FOR MAYOR OR GOVERNOR?

By Ryan Flynn | February 16, 2009

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman announced two additions to his re-election campaign.  John Stiles has been named the Mayor’s campaign manager, until accepting this position Stiles was the communications director for the DFL.  One line from Stiles in the Mayor’s press release jumped out me:

Even with the hard road that we must travel now, I’m confident that the mayor will keep providing the kind of focused, determined leadership for Saint Paul that Governor Pawlenty has refused to provide Minnesotans.

###

Running for re-election as Mayor of St. Paul and the first instinct is to take a shot at the Governor?  There is certainly more to this than just staffing up for re-election, Mayor Coleman is laying the ground work for a run at the Governor’s mansion in 2010.

The shot at the Governor from the Mayor and Stiles is an attempt to pass the buck on extremely poor leadership in St. Paul.  Visiting St. Paul is much different than a few years ago.  St. Paul is filled with empty storefront after empty storefront because of the recent hikes in fees that have severely killed businesses all across St. Paul.  If the Mayor were to run simply on his job performance in St. Paul, he would certainly lose.

I personally do expect the Mayor to run for Governor, I have thought that since the day he hired Sara Grewing as his chief of staff.  I know Sara Grewing from the days of the Klobuchar campaign and she is a very talented DFL operative, I viewed that move then as beefing up his staff.

Coleman isn’t even a good mayor. He thinks he can be Governor?

He only became Mayor because Randy Kelly endorsed Bush over Kerry.

Chris Coleman is almost as retarded as his brother Nick. Both are drooling idiots.

I would also like to ask Mayor Chris if his idea of leadership is whining because he can’t balance his budget. Another Mayor Coleman did that just fine through thick and thin… and resurrected a dwindling capital city.

The City of Saint Paul is on the road to ruin once again, thanks to the likes of Chris Coleman.

    What a loser.

    Democrats can’t get ANYTHING right.

Oh wait, the boss in the oval office is a Democrat.

    Nevermind!

“St. Paul is filled with empty storefront after empty storefront because of the recent hikes in fees that have severely killed businesses all across St. Paul.”

Ryan, why exactly would Mayor Coleman have to raise fees around the city? It wouldn’t have anything to do with the cuts in LGA would it? The cuts that happened because Governor Pawlenty refuses to raise taxes?

So, what do you suggest, that Mayor Coleman refuse to raise fees and instead lay off some cops?

Governor Pawlenty isn’t doing the state any favors, property taxes around the state have skyrocketed since his misguided and short sighted pledge to refuse to raise taxes, fees similar to the ones that you blame for the business closures in St. Paul have likewise increased around the state– so do you have something constructive to add, or are you just going to sit here and kvetch?

You ever come to Saint Paul a few years ago? Downtown was a ghost town. There is a thriving neighborhood there now. Business are moving in- not out.

  6. quicksand Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 12:44 AM

Downtown St Paul was a ghost town before Norm. It flourished under Norm, but has once again become a Ghost Town thanks to Chris Coleman.

What does Chris want to do now? Spend 3 Billion in the next 6 years to fix what he wrecked.
    http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/stories/2009/02/02/daily50.html

Chris Coleman claims he can’t fund cops without LGA, but he can find $3,000,000,000 for a wish list of other projects.

  7. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 7:46 AM

The city of St. Paul is facing some rather drastic cuts in services thanks to the worsening economy and the cuts provided by the state of Minnesota to local government aid.

A good governor would be able to identify looming budget peril and would concoct a plan to deal with it. Tim Pawlenty is not a good governor, and as such, St. Paul residents will see less cops, city prosecutors and firefighters just so Pawlenty can maintain the illusion of being tough on taxes.

He has earned the right to brag about how awesome he is for not raising taxes. But, similarly, the millions of people who have been hurt by this short-sighted plan deserve to know why it is that the guy who broke into their house last week and, ironically enough, stole the $15 they had saved in taxes last month, is back on the street this week.

I applaud Chris Coleman for saying it.

  8. Ghost of Matt Entenza Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 8:07 AM

    Chris Coleman “saving” it?

Give me a break — he needs to cut the fat from the city budget, just like families are forced to make cut backs in these tough times.

The only time I hear Coleman is when he is complaining about the lack of LGA (read: handout/welfare) from the state.

I think it’s indisputable that the number of vacant buildings/storefronts is much higher now than under the Kelly or Norm Coleman adminstration.

  9. chile Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 9:01 AM

    Leroy, you jackass,

A good mayor would be able to identify looming budget peril and would concoct a plan to deal with it. Chris Coleman is not a good mayor, and as such, St. Paul residents will see less cops, city prosecutors and firefighters just so Mayor Coleman can blame Pawlenty being tough on taxes.

Did you know that Chris Coleman is going to add a full-time bicylce/pedestrian coordinator this year?

It’s the same cry from RT and CC every year. They want the state to subsidize them because they can’t manage their budgets.

  10. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 10:45 AM

How is Chris Coleman supposed to set his budget when he doesn’t know from biennium to biennium how much of the no-new-taxes mess Pawlenty is going to be passing down stream to the cities?

  11. chile Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Leroy, you jackass, it’s called a spread sheet.

If fewer revenues come in, then you need to eliminate some expenses. Press F9 and it recalulates automatically! Repeat process until budget is balanced.

And it deciding what to cut, a good mayor wouldn’t start with cops and firefighters. Why should the state have to raise taxes because Minneapolis and St. Paul can’t manage their budgets.

  12. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 11:32 AM

    I agree, Chile.

I have paid taxes for years to cover the local fire department, and I have yet to use their services. Cut them all I say. If my house burns, I can buy a new one with all the cash I save. Same for cops. They only cost me money with speeding tickets and such. If we did away with them, I would have A LOT more money. While we are at it, snow melts. Why bother plowing when we can just wait and it will take care of itself.

You are on to something here. Screw government, Lets just get rid of it all and handle the services we each need individually. That would make the world so much better.

  13. chile Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Leroy, you jackass, your sarcasm is a non sequitur.

The City of St. Paul can pay for cops, firemen, streets, etc., with out any help from the state.

How about starting with cuts to social programs and all the feel-good arts crap?

  14. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 12:19 PM

    Chile-

Do you really think St. Paul is cutting cops so that it can afford arts programming?

The governor wanted to cut city aid to the bone, and I get that. But with this budget, he has gone too far, and now he is hacking away at the bone itself as he is forcing cuts to essential services.

Pawlenty isn’t worried, because he has no intention to run for re-election. But for those of us who are hurt by his decision to audition for a new job while neglecting his current one, well, we will be the ones who make sure he gets neither. And to the republicans who go along with this gamesmanship, April 15 will be a stark reminder of how much we all have had to pay in increased property taxes just so T-Paw can claim to be the no new taxes (except on cigarettes and for stadiums) guy.

  15. Twice Blessed Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 12:40 PM

If Chris Coleman is beefing up his staff, maybe he can hire his brother, Nick Coleman as his publicist. Then, Nick can get off of the payroll of the Strib he helped bankrupt and actually do some work instead of just showing up and getting paid.

  16. chile Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 1:36 PM

    Leroy, you jackass,

“Do you really think St. Paul is cutting cops so that it can afford arts programming?”

    Not exactly, but close.

LGA is being cut to St. Paul. Being the partisan pig he is, Chris Coleman’s FIRST reaction is to cry “we’ll have to cut cops.”

It’s an entirely predictable maneuver by Chris Coleman. One that he learned from RT and Soupy Sayles-Belton.

  17. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 1:56 PM

And then when he is forced to cut the cops, what will the republican excuse be then?

This brinksmanship, where republicans want to force democrats to make the tough decisions for them has got to end.

Republicans spend us into huge deficits, and then cry like babies when democrats do the right thing and set tax rates in such a way to fix the problem. Republican popularity goes in waves because while they are deficit spending, everyone loves them. But then when the bill comes due, they are nowhere to be found, and democrats are left to clean up their mess. Once things are cleaned up, the republicans emerge from hiding again, and argue that the taxes they created the need for are too high.

Honesty would have republicans live within their means, rather than living within their grasp.

  18. chile Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Leroy, you jackass, the State doesn’t have much say in how St. Paul spends it money. It’s quite apparent that Chris Coleman is telling the state to spend more money on St. Paul.

So, I didn’t get my Christmas bonus this past year. Times are tough and my employer said “not this year”. Easy decsion for him. Easy decision for me too: I still pay by mortgage, utilities and other bills, but perhaps eat out less and get rid of cable TV.

What would Chris Coleman due? Oh probably quit paying his electric bill and have his lights turned off. Then he’ll blame the boss.

  19. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 3:52 PM

    Really?

Show me an example. Just one case where the city is wasting money on fluff versus cops. Not a rumor. Not a theory. An example with a reference to some credidle source. Show me that and I will join your chorus.

That is how confident I am that you can’t.

  20. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:23 PM

“The city of St. Paul is facing some rather drastic cuts in services thanks to the worsening economy and the cuts provided by the state of Minnesota to local government aid.”

Then cut, cut, cut away. The city of Saint Paul… like it’s socialist friend across the river, has hundreds of millions of waste in its budget. The Democrats in both cities cut cops and emergency crews first… not out of necessity… but out of political necessity.

Cuts to LGA don’t necessitate raising property taxes or city fees. Those are choices the elected leaders of those cities made to sustain their wasteful spending on socialist pet projects.

    Nothing more.

  21. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:29 PM

“A good governor would be able to identify looming budget peril and would concoct a plan to deal with it.”

And he did. Meanwhile, the Democrats in legislature have offered no plan what so ever. They also have a duty to lead. But they fail that duty at every turn.

“Tim Pawlenty is not a good governor, and as such, St. Paul residents will see less cops, city prosecutors and firefighters just so Pawlenty can maintain the illusion of being tough on taxes.”

Tim Pawlenty is the governor of Minnesota. He does not head of the City of Saint Paul. If the city of Saint Paul is lacking police, fire fighters, procescutors, etc… it is their responsibility to fund those areas, not the state’s.

Fact is, the leaders in Saint Paul choose to cut police and emergency crews instead of their socialist pet projects. The fact is, Democrats in Minneapolis and Saint Paul are stupid, lazy and incapable… they chose to put the citizens of their cities in danger, rather than cut their socialist pet projects. Why? Apparently they think that’s good politics. And apparently, the fat, lazy socialist wads who live in those cities agree.

If they prefer socialist pet projects to police, then that’s their choice. Let them rot for all I care. They have no right to demand more from me over it.

  22. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:32 PM

“How is Chris Coleman supposed to set his budget when he doesn’t know from biennium to biennium how much of the no-new-taxes mess Pawlenty is going to be passing down stream to the cities?”

Leroy labors under the retarded notion that the entire city budget comes from LGA.

Hey dip shit, the cities have their own budget… of which LGA is intended to “aid” certain functions… not subsidize others. If LGA gets cut as the state manages it’s budget, the cut the socialist pet projects…

Democrats, however, prefer to play politics with public safety.

    Fuck them.

  23. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:34 PM

“Do you really think St. Paul is cutting cops so that it can afford arts programming? ”

Yes, I really do. And I know for a FACT that Minneapolis does the same.

For example… the half a million dollars spent on artsy water fountains… That would pay for at least 4 cops that same year.

  24. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:38 PM

“This brinksmanship, where republicans want to force democrats to make the tough decisions for them has got to end.”

… huh? You mean the brinksmanship where Democrats in these cities are actually held to account for the reckless choices they’ve made?

Tell ya what, if you think that the Auto industry is fucked… you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. What the UAW has done to Michigan, AFSCME, MAPE and the rest of the government plunderers will do to every city, county and state in the nation. The difference is that they make the UAW look like pikers.

  25. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:39 PM

“Republicans spend us into huge deficits…”

Such as the $2 Trillion in deficit spending the Democrats have jammed through Washington in the past 5 months?

Such as the $7 Billion shortfall Democrats in Minnesota have delivered on us?

You’re not just stupid, Leroy. You’re hilarious.

  26. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:46 PM

“Show me an example. Just one case where the city is wasting money on fluff versus cops. Not a rumor. Not a theory. An example with a reference to some credidle source. Show me that and I will join your chorus.”

Here you go: Half a million dollars on water fountains in Minneapolis…. versus the 4 cops that would fund.

    Here’s another: http://www.stpaul.gov/directory.asp?EID=16

What the fuck does this guy, Joseph Spencer, minister of propaganda (e.g., associate of arts and culture policy???) do that deserves a city paycheck?

Fire that silly s.o.b. and hire another cop or two.

  27. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Here’s the sitch on those stupid fountains:

“… the city plans to unveil concepts for 10 artist-designed drinking fountains that Rybak championed at $50,000 each.”

That’s half a million dollars for 10 water fountains.

…”Typical park fountains cost as little as $6,000.”

They could have spent $60,000… or just fixed the old ones.

“… The city is also awarding a $180,000 contract for a marketing campaign on behalf of city water,”

Seriously… on top of the half million bucks, the socialists in Minneapolis saw fit to appropriate another $180,000 to market city water.

    CITY WATER!!!

And of course, the hired a consultant:

“And it has hired a consultant for almost $50,000 to develop a strategy for approaching suburbs about using more city water.”

They need a fucking consultant for this? RT can’t pick up the goddam phone and call his colleagues in the burbs… “hey fellas, we got lots of great water… you should consider using more of it.”

In total that’s $730,000 of GOVERNMENT WASTE.

Come on Leroy, get out your pompoms.

  28. Leroy Jenkins Says:

Thanks for the link Master of None, your catch is precisely what this debate is all about, complete and utter waste. And all the DFL knows to do is blame the Governor.

  32. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 8:27 PM

I, for once, agree with Ryan.

The city’s decision to sell overpass space to local artists is a creative way to raise money for the city. I just wish the city didn’t have to resort to such measures just to make ends meet.

“The city’s decision to sell overpass space to local artists is a creative way to raise money for the city. I just wish the city didn’t have to resort to such measures just to make ends meet.”

That’s rich. You got proof that that space was sold to anyone?

You’re full of shit Leroy. I thought you were going to join the chorus if someone could cite just one example of waste over public safety… hell, we’ve cited at least 3 of the thousands.

Saint Paul and Minneapolis waste tens of millions of dollars on socialist pet projects and other bullshit. If they want public safety, then cut that shit and fund public safety… that afterall is a basic function of government.

It’s o.k. though Leroy, we all recognize you for the stupid, intellectually dishonest dumb fuck that you are.

  35. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 9:17 PM

    Chestnut-

First, you provided no St. Paul examples. That was the request.

Second, I have as much evidence that the artists paid for these slots as you do that the city did.

  36. Chestnut Says:
    February 17th, 2009 at 10:16 PM

    Leroy,
First, yes I did provide a Saint Paul example.

    Here it is again:

    Here’s another: http://www.stpaul.gov/directory.asp?EID=16

What the fuck does this guy, Joseph Spencer, minister of propaganda (e.g., associate of arts and culture policy???) do that deserves a city paycheck?

Fire that silly s.o.b. and hire another cop or two.

    ——-

And finally, you’re the dipshit saying the artists paid for having their symbols displayed. They did not.

If you want to go on that basis, hell, I’m waiting for Barack Obama to apologize for his wife’s “Kill Whitey” comment.

You have as much proof she didn’t say it, as I do she did.

  37. Leroy Jenkins Says:

Do you have a paystub from Mr. Spencer showing that this is a paid position?

  38. quicksand Says:

Leroy, read this … I know how you love to be proven wrong-

    http://www.ci.stpaul.mn.us/index.asp?nid=2728

“A new Budget of over 4.7 million has been developed, which includes the merger of existing departments’ budgets and enhancing the HREEO staff by an additional executive level full-time employee. The previous Human Rights department operated with an annual budget of approximately $600,000. ”

    Let me see $4,700,000 minus $600,000 = $4,100,000

That’s just one example, with over 4 million in waste.

Leroy Jenkins Said: “Show me an example. Just one case where the city is wasting money on fluff versus cops. Not a rumor. Not a theory. An example with a reference to some credidle source. Show me that and I will join your chorus.”

Chris Coleman’s Mayoral staff is so big he and the Deputy Mayor, have a Chief of Staff and an Deputy Chief of Staff. There is a Policy Director, Deputy Policy Director, and a Policy Associate for the Arts.

The is a Communication Directors and a Deputy Communications Director, and two Communications Associate. WTF? Trim the Mayoral staff in half and they’d save over a million a year just in salary and benefits.

  42. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 18th, 2009 at 1:54 AM

“In 2007, a collaborative effort of the Coleman Administration, the City Council, and the Equal Access Working Group produced an internal performance audit of the city’s administrative application of federal, state, and local laws designed to maximize economic inclusion.”

Sure sounds to me like the purpose of this supposed fluff job is to ensure that the city is in compliance with, “federal, state, and local laws” in an effort to maximize economic inclusion. In other words, the job was created to ensure that the city is getting all the state and federal funds it can.

How would doing this be wasteful?

  43. Sigmund F Says:

I think Leroy is just a little bit crazy. He’s not smart bought to be intellectually dishonest. Leroy’s failed reasoning could be partly attributed to political ideology, not his own, but of those he follows.

You see, Leroy was very late in his development. When most kids were riding their bikes, young Leroy was still breast feeding and being toilet trained. He especially loved the maternal attention he received during his diaper changes.

Long story short, Leroy was in the anal stage when other boys were in the phallic stage or coping with the Oedipus Complex. Today as Leroy compensates his lack of development by fixating his thought on the penises and vaginae of his new caretakers, the liberal democrats.

Leroy sees the liberal Mayor just as he did his own mother. Neither is capable of doing anything wrong. It also appears that Leroy has no fear of losing his testicles, which could mean he already lost them.

    Sig

“Do you have a paystub from Mr. Spencer showing that this is a paid position?”

He’s a direct report of Mayor Coleman. Can you prove that this is NOT a paid position? You can deliver that citation that this is a volunteer position when you show the citation that a Minneapolis artists bought and paid for re-construction of the railings where symbols were displayed.

“Federally mandated positions are now fluff?”

And you can cite where and how the Human Rights bullshit is a “federally mandated position.” Funny, my town doesn’t have one.

  45. Chestnut Says:

… and funny… it would be unconstitutional for the Federal Government to mandate the make-up of city staff.

Beyond that: “Sure sounds to me like the purpose of this supposed fluff job is to ensure that the city is in compliance with, “federal, state, and local laws” in an effort to maximize economic inclusion.”

That’s cute. But even idea to “maximize economic inclusion” is buzzword bullshit for fluff liberal fuckwad jobs.

Within the massive St Paul government who whose job was it to see that the city with compliant with Affirmative Action issues? The Department of Contracts and Analysis perhaps?

The closest you have come is a position that was created to ensure that St. Paul is maximizing its state and federal matching fund opportunities.

In effect, what you are saying is, the city should leave state and federal money on the table rather than employ someone to make sure that EEO compliance is demonstrated in a way that would bring the city many times over again what the city pays this person.

And you wonder why the budgets of Pawlenty and Bush have left us with such deficits…

Leroy, you jackass, you’ve already lost the argument but allow me to pile on some more.

They just hired that “someone” a week ago. The new executive of the EEO. Are they going to pay her 4.1 million, are is she going to hire a staff?

    Leroy,

You simply made up that crap about “..maximizing its state and federal matching fund opportunities..”.

The reference to “..designed to maximize economic inclusion.” has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with maximizing any funds.

“Maximize economic inclusion” are the buzzwords meaning that discrimination on the basis of race and gender should be mandated in government contracts.

This is like saying firing grant writers is a good way for a non-profit to weather tough economic times.

This job pays for itself dozens of times over. How is that a waste of money?

    Leroy, you dumb fuck:

“What I asked y’all to provide was one example of the city of St. Paul (If you recall, that was the topic we started with here) wasting money on fluff.”

Here it is again (third time): http://www.stpaul.gov/directory.asp?EID=16

What the fuck does this guy, Joseph Spencer, minister of propaganda (e.g., associate of arts and culture policy???) do that deserves a city paycheck?

Fire that silly s.o.b. and hire another cop or two.

That’s in addition to the bullshit “economic inclusion” department. You really are a stupid mother fucker.

  54. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 18th, 2009 at 12:15 PM

    Chestnut-

I will ask for the THIRD time. Is Mr. Spencer drawing a city salary? It is hard to hire cops with the money you saved by firing a volunteer.

If you are too lazy to research your points, that’s fine, but save us all the theatrics. Your word is not good enough to count as fact.

    Leroy,

    Click Here;

Click on “City of St. Paul”

    Type in “Spencer”

    Hit “Submit”

Don’t folks of your ilk ever get tired of having to be spoon-fed?

  56. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 18th, 2009 at 12:58 PM

I say this as a St. Paul resident. If, indeed, all he does for the city is arts and culture consulting, I would agree that his job deserves elimination before the first cop is fired.

  57. Chestnut Says:
    February 18th, 2009 at 12:59 PM

“I will ask for the THIRD time.”

Actually, you ask it for a second.

And I answer, he’s a direct report to the Mayor… He’s shown on every budget document.

So unless you have contradicting evidence that he is a volunteer, YES he’s on the payroll.

I love this howler though, from the lazy fuck wad who manufactured the notion that some artists paid the city of Minneapolis to display their art:

“If you are too lazy to research your points, that’s fine, but save us all the theatrics. Your word is not good enough to count as fact.”

Get fucked Leroy, you stupid, lazy, dishonest ass clown.

… and thanks Keep It Simple…. Joseph Spencer, misister of Propaganda for the city of Saint Paul makes: $57,211.

What a waste. Hire another cop. Fire the art guy.

  59. Chestnut Says:

In addition to firing the art guy, end all spending on anything the “art guy” would recommend.

I question whether affirmation of the courts order from last week represents a “latest blow.” It would appear like more of a continuation of the last blow….

There are still 3500 ballots in play. I doubt Coleman will win. Richie stole this thing from him long ago… Well, Richie and general incompetence from Coleman’s legal team…. still… it will be fascinating to watch the reactions of the liberal fascist retard trolls here if Coleman does win.

But again, I doubt that will happen.

  62. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    February 18th, 2009 at 4:41 PM

How, preytell, did Ritchie steal it?

Many say it. None seem to be able to back it with any examples of things Ritchie did differently than Kiffmeyer.

  63. Chestnut Says:
    February 18th, 2009 at 4:47 PM

My biggest gripe against Richie is that his selection of canvassing board members was a purposeful — and masterful — stroke to eliminate key conservative judges from the contest phase as well as from any suit regarding the decisions of the canvassing board.

By doing so, he ensured that Franken would have the advantage in any legal proceedings, and he did so knowing that the decisions made by the canvasing board are limited… as is the scope of the same board.

Frankly, I still put the onus on the Coleman team. They rolled over early, and have proven limp-dicked in their challenges…

“So, the Chief Justice is a secret lefty?”

No, but the Chief Justice was incapacitated from presiding over the legal issues that mattered. When Richie named him and other key “conservatives” to the canvasing board, it looked good. But it also ensured only Democrats would be on the bench during the contest.

I realize you really are this stupid, Leroy. So I don’t really expect you to have the intelligence to understand.

Like I said: Richie made some purposeful, masterful moves that ensured this election would be stolen from Coleman before the contest even got started.

Leroy, after choir practive you go straight to you room.

Holy shit Leroy how much further can you backpedal before you admit that St Paul does waste money and you were wrong to say they don’t.
