AL FRANKEN IS STILL LYING ABOUT SUPPORTING THE WAR
By Ryan Flynn | February 20, 2009
Al Franken after all this time just cannot stop misrepresenting his original position on the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
From a radio interview on Air America:
GREEN: The President this week said that he’s sending another 17,000 troops to Afghanistan. Is that something that you would favor? You were an early supporter of the invasion of Iraq, but then became a vociferous, eloquent, critic of the war. What about Afghanistan?
FRANKEN: Well, first of all, as far as an early supporter of the Iraq war, I was really on the fence in a way where I neither spoke out for or against it, which I regret. I wish I had been one of the wise people who had spoken out fiercely against it.  http://airamerica.com/blog/2009/feb/20/7-days-america-al-franken
###
We all know his original position, plain and simple, he supported the invasion of Iraq. Al, we know that position is not popular in your party, but you cannot run from the facts.
This is a great open letter from Eric Black during the campaign: http://ericblackink.minnpost.com/2007/09/12/an-open-letter-to-al-franken-why-did-you-support-the-iraq-war/

How is this lying? Franken states in the recent Air America interview (and you quote him above) that he was on the fence early on. In the Black piece you link to, Eric states that Al supported the war, but he had his doubts.
Everything I just read seems to me that Franken supported the war in the beginning but had doubts – probably like a lot of people in this country. But his views on the issue evolved over time as the truth came out – probably like a lot of people in the country.
To me, this comparison amounts to “Is the weather mostly sunny or partly cloudy?” You can argue that those are pretty much the same thing
February 20th, 2009 at 5:11 PM
so franken took a bad position and allowed it to improve over time as bush’s lies became more and more apparent. i would say that is a welcomed improvement from norm coleman whose opinions on iraq have never evolved but remained deeply entrenched in bush’s white house delusions.

It’s Clinton’s fault!
February 20th, 2009 at 5:56 PM
He now says he never spoke out for or against the war. He did say he supported the war. What he thought will obviously be different what he says because his is a well known liar. No one with any sense what so ever can deny he said he supported the war.
Some people will do anything to get elected.
February 20th, 2009 at 5:58 PM
I would rather read about the fanatics exploding bombs in Baghdad rather than here. If Franken gets his way, IED’s will be exploding at the Mall of America.
I’m tired of hearing people complain about the plight of Iraqis. The war there is keeping the terrorists focused in the Middle East instead of here. President Bush did a tremendous job of keeping us safe after 9/11 and people vilify him for it.

Karen reminds me of a little crappie that swallowed everything… the hook, the line, and the sinker.
Now I’m SURE there is no more kool-aid in Cheney’s pitcher.
Are you serious Karen, or just kidding around?
Why would the Democrats here vilify President Bush after his successful invasion of a sovereign country, and his insistance that Osama Bin Laden remain free and protected?
I mean… his handling of the WMDs in Iqaq was stellar. His outstanding foreign policy mastery is unmatched and has left us with a world at peace, with growing admiration for the American people and their compassion. The strong diplomatic efforts he led were incredibly to behold.
Oh that’s right, conservative rule has crippled the financial system, and driven the consumer economy over the cliff.
Bush did a tremendous job? Not even close Karen, not even CLOSE!

danbrome,
Speaking of kool-aid, I have seen numerous comments from your regarding Obama and how great he is. After 30 days, people are already calling his presidency a disaster, including countries in Europe.
This guy is a complete joke and is ruining consumer confidence and Wall Street. Look how far the DOW has fallen since this clown was elected. And is case you forgot, you can thank Barney Frank, Pelosi, Dodd, and a handful of other liberal nutcases for ruining the financial system.
You look like a fool for some of your comments.
February 22nd, 2009 at 9:14 AM
danbrome?
WMD? Where are they?
From 1991 to 1998, UNSCOM did find WMD in Iraq, they just didn’t find very many. UNSCOM withdrew from Iraq in 1998, after several years of Iraqi obstruction of the inspection process.
Who was President in 1998? What exactly did he do. Actually he bombed Iraq on the eve of the scheduled vote for his impeachment.
UNSCOM was disbanded in 1999, and replaced by UNMOVIC. Iraq continued it’s pattern of obstruction with UNMOVIC for the next three years. In November 2002, the U.N. adopted resolution 1441 – which placed the burden of on Iraq to verify that it had no WMD. Iraq failed to meet the requirements of 1441. In March of 2003, UNMOVIC pulled out of Iraq. After issuing Saddam Hussein a final warning to step down from power, U.S and Coalition Forces invaded Iraq.
danbrome, for well more than a decade the UN was convinced Iraq had WMD. Do you doubt that? What do you think happened to the WMD? Did Iraq destroy them? If so, why couldn’t they verify this?
At the beginning of the 1991 liberation of Kuwait, Saddam Hussein sent much of his Air-force fleet to Iran. Is it plausible in your liberal mind, that the same tactic was used for WMD prior to the 2003 invasion?
So where are the WMD danbrome? Did Saddam destroy them? Are they in Iran, Jordan or Syria?
BTW, danbrome: Since January, 2007 it is a stretch to say that US has been under “conservative rule”. The financial debacle occurred under the watch of a Democratically controlled House and Senate.

Dash..
“After 30 days, people are already calling his presidency a disaster, including countries in Europe.”
Any person who has already concluded that Obama’s presidency is a disaster had their mind made up the day they voted for Sarah Palin.
I think consumer confidence has been influenced by the massive job losses we suffered over the last year, not the last 30 days.
Although success on Wall Street is an important part of our economy, it is the suffering on Main Street that needs some attention right now. This is reflected in the policies of President Obama, and I’m happy for that.
February 22nd, 2009 at 3:17 PM
chili..
Any chance we were under conservative rule between January 2001 and January 2007?
Of course that doesn’t count since it’s not in your talking points now, is it?
February 22nd, 2009 at 3:28 PM
Anybody who is proud of the way George W. Bush handled the “WMD” in Iraq needs help.
February 22nd, 2009 at 4:53 PM
danbrome: 01/2007 DJIA at 14,000. Unemployment low and interest rate super low. Yep, hat one quarter downturn after 9/11 is duly noted. And under GWB we recovered.
How did Clinton handle the WMD?
February 22nd, 2009 at 6:07 PM
Can Republicans please stop trying to refer back to Clinton? Regardless of Clinton’s screw ups, Bush had a solid 8 year to correct them. Every problem you complain about Clinton causing and starting further indicts Bush as being a loser who didnt fix any of them.
Once I feel that Obama has had a sufficient amount of time to fix Bush’s screw ups and if he hasnt lived up to that timeline, then I will hold Bush’s problems against him. But until then, every problem this country has is a problem George Bush did nothing to fix and Obama is currently in the process of trying to fix.

Chile,
I did a Google News search on “obama presidency a disaster” and ZERO results turned up. But I guess you know more than Google. Other than Rush Limbaugh and anyone on Fox News, can you show me one expert who has called his presidency a disaster after 30 days?
Also, take a look at this chart and notice the Dow decline that started in Oct 07 and then really picked up steam in August of 2008. That fall started way before Obama was inaugurated.

Results 1 – 10 of about 8,960,000 for obama presidency a disaster. (0.11 seconds)
AC, apparently EVERYBODY knows more about using Google than you do.
AC = another fine example of how liberals must lie because the truth is against everything they believe in.
February 22nd, 2009 at 10:19 PM
danbrome, you proved my point. Democrats have controlled the House and Senate since January 2007.
AC I Googled “Obama Socialist” … 5.2 million hits. That Google is pretty smart.
February 23rd, 2009 at 12:16 AM
AC’s graph is a monthly composite, which smoothes out the changes somewhat.
This one shows day to day fluctuations:
http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=%5EDJI#chart4:symbol=^dji;range=20000102,20090202;indicator=volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=on;source=undefined
2006: Dow grows by +15%
2007 – First 9 months: +13.5%
2007 – Last 3 Months: -10%
2008: 12 Months -28%
2009: Thru 2/20 -18%
For all you dumb asses out their, this is proof that Democrats have ruined the economy.
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:01 AM
Yeah, Google is good. I searched “chili +idiot” and got over 1,100,000 results.
Pete, do a Google News search with that phrase in quotes and you will get nothing. If you search without quotes, all you get are results that have those words randomly on the page someplace without any context. Totally meaningless results.

“For all you dumb asses out their, this is proof that Democrats have ruined the economy.”
All this proves is your ignorance.
Funny how the level of the Dow is your barometer for the economy. Ever consider talking to people on Main Street to see how they have been doing since 2001? Oh that’s right, they don’t matter.
Nevermind!
February 23rd, 2009 at 11:50 AM
danbrome, The stock markets are good indicators of the economy. The continued decline in the markets stem from the fact that most people think Obama is full of shit
Measuring Real GDP is arguably the best way to judge past economic performance. Eight days ago I provided you that following and you ran and hid like a little bitch.

You say:
“The continued decline in the markets stem from the fact that most people think Obama is full of shit.”
Oh really?
Your statement is not only inaccurate, it is ignorant. Try to do a little more research before making stupid statements in the future.
Read up:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/20/poll.obama.stimulus/index.html
WASHINGTON (CNN) — A national poll indicates that two out of three Americans approve of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as president of the United States.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey, released Friday, also suggests that six in 10 support the economic stimulus package that Obama signed into law Tuesday.
Obama’s approval rating stands at 67 percent in the new poll. That’s down 9 percentage points from the most recent CNN poll, which was conducted in early February. But a breakdown by party suggests that the drop doesn’t mean that the new president is in serious trouble.
“Since nearly all of the decline came among Republicans, this doesn’t indicate that the honeymoon is already over,” said Keating Holland, CNN’s polling director. “Among Democrats, Obama’s approval went from 96 percent to 92 percent; among Republicans, it dropped from 50 percent in early February to 31 percent now.”
February 23rd, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Chile – “Most people think Obama is full of shit”
Really? Please show us where “most” people are saying this. All the national surveys and polls I’ve seen show nothing even remotely close to this. Most of them show the opposite. But if you can show me something – ANYTHING – I’ll listen. Of course the online polls on Sean Hannity’s or Rush Limbaugh’s home pages don’t count.
February 23rd, 2009 at 1:09 PM
Wow, out of the billions of web pages out there, you found seven that mention the Obama presidency being a disaster.
Seven results? That proves my point. Thanks.
February 23rd, 2009 at 6:28 PM
AC, there were 7 Goolge results that used the exact quote – millions who used the words in combinaton.
You stated twice that there were no such websites.
AC: Liar
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:54 PM
AC: Idiot, liar, fool, Democrat (but I repeat myself…)
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:54 PM
Chile and Pete,
Go to news.google.com and search that phrase. How many results did you get? Nothing.
AC = not lying
Pete and Chili = failing reading comprehension at a third grade level
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Pete and Chili,
Do you have health or dental insurance? Homeowners or renters insurance? If you do, then aren’t you technically socialists?
February 23rd, 2009 at 10:16 PM
AC, I pay a premium for my insurance. Deductibles and copays also apply.
The government does not provide insurance for me, I pay a private comanpany to assume risk – and that company does so to earn a profit.
Were you thinking of Social Security, which is socialism. The government forces me to pay that.
February 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 PM
danbrome, poll numbers on Obamas stimulus package continue to sink. The more people learn about it the more they think it’s full of pork.
February 23rd, 2009 at 11:05 PM
I thought we stipulated that polling from Hannity and Limbaugh doesn’t count. Have you questioned any Democrats about Obama’s Plan?
February 23rd, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Just wait until President Obama includes the costs of war in the budget. Wouldn’t that be cool? Then his approval rating will rise even more.
Let’s be patient and give our new President a chance to succeed.
February 24th, 2009 at 12:42 AM
danbrome: head up his ass
Today Rasmussen released a new poll showing consumer and investor confidence at record lows.
Rasmussen Consumer Index
Consumer, Investor Confidence Again Fall to Record Lows – http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/business/indexes/rasmussen_consumer_index
Obviously, most Democrats and Republicans have no faith in Obama. Why must we be “patient” danbrome? Is this an Affirmative Action requirement?
AC, are Democrats now admitting they are truly socialists? Is the new strategy to drop the “progressive” label, and try to paint everyone as a socialist?
February 24th, 2009 at 12:49 AM
danbrome, look here! Obama’s stimulus package captured on film!

Obama’s so bad, so soon that even African Americans will start to disown him.
After all, he is equally “the next white president” as he is “the first black president” (that is if we believe his version of his parentage).
February 24th, 2009 at 8:35 AM
KIS, Obama is the first Hawaiian Prezident. I would have thought the first communistic U.S Prez would have been born in Russia or France.
[Ir]regardless, the most of the nation thinks he’s black because he is the chosen-by-Oprah one.
February 24th, 2009 at 10:02 AM
You guys are foolish to draw any conclusions about President Obama’s success or failure after only 33 days.
Have your fun now, because with patience his bold actions will gain traction, and foster revived economic growth.
