MINNPOST: “CHRIS COLEMAN’S NEW CAMPAIGN STAFF HINTS AT HIGHER OFFICE”
By Ryan Flynn | February 20, 2009
Beefing up campaign staff for his re-election bid might be a clue that St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman has higher ambitions, says the Minnesota Independent.
He recently hired John Stiles, DFL communications director, for the campaign team. Coleman easily won election as mayor four years ago, and although there is a fair amount of grumbling by residents about tax hikes, no formidable challenger has emerged for this year.
So why hire Stiles?
“This is using the sledgehammer to kill the fly,†David Schultz, a political science professor at Hamline University, told the Independent. “He doesn’t need this person, but it’s a great way of sort of building for the future.â€
Coleman staffers are careful to point out that they’re focusing attention on the mayoral race, but there always seems to be a “wink-wink” when I’ve asked about a 2010 run for governor.
George Latimer, the last St. Paul mayor to run for governor (losing the DFL nomination in 1986), told the Independent:
“I have no doubt that if things go well that he should look towards going the next step. I think that he should keep all of his options open to run statewide.â€Â (Source: MinnPost, February 19, 2009)

I posted on Tuesday about the additions to the Mayor’s staff as a not so subtle hint that he may be positioning himself to run for Governor, seems more people feel the same way.
I also did a run-down of what the DFL field looks like right now, could it grow?

Yeah, Ryan does run a little loose with the facts here. So what’s new?

I think danbrome needs to open his eyes before commenting.
MinnPost is where it is stated that Latimer is the last St. Paul Mayor to run for Governor, I never made such a claim because I know it to be false.

It was from Joe Kimball’s article.
Joe covered St. Paul for the Trib for decades…. I hope he’s not coming down with what Vern Gagne has.

Coleman and Rybak are both delusional. You have to move so far left to run either of those cities that you are basically precluding yourself from any future statewide office.

If danbrome were to open his eyes he would become a Republican.

What’s Chris Coleman’ pitch? He’s been leading the decline of Saint Paul for two terms now. Hell, Saint Paul’s decline began long before any state or national trend.
Then again, I guess that is “leadership.”

danbrome, don’t feel bad. You made a jackass out yourself, but at least you knew more than junior journalists at Mindy.

Ryan does run a little loose with the facts here.

Please danbrome prove where I have been loose with the facts?

danbrome does run a little loose with the facts everywhere.

Ryan.. can I have a week or 2 to pull that information together?
February 20th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
George Latimer, the last St. Paul mayor to run for governor (losing the DFL nomination in 1986), told the Independent:
Looks like that was fixed. It’s not in the story anymore, and norm Coleman is explicitly mentioned.

“Ryan.. can I have a week or 2 to pull that information together?”
DFL code speak for can I have a while to consult with party officials about what lies I can tell.

One should not forget Tom Bryne who sought the DFL endorsement for Lt. Gov. in 1970.
