BREAKING: I was responsible for bonus loophole, says Dodd

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Senate Banking committee Chairman Christopher Dodd told CNN’s Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer Wednesday that he was responsible for adding the bonus loophole into the stimulus package that permitted AIG and other companies that received bailout funds to pay bonuses.

On Tuesday, Dodd denied to CNN that he had anything to do with the adding of that provision.

I do not limit myself to those two networks, I used them as an example of my effort to get diverse views.

I also watch CNN, Fox, and most of the other major networks including all of the Sunday morning political shows. I believe you are limiting yourself by just watching those two networks and now understand why you have such limited knowledge on present day issues.

I’m going to pay you a compliment and say that I think it’s great that you watch Fox News and CNN to get both sides. I think that’s what people should do: (1) ascertain the bias of the news source and (2) expose themselves to a variety of points of view.

I would just add that with Fox there is a difference between its hard news shows (like Shepard Smith’s broadcast at 6 pm or Special Report at 5 pm) and its opinion shows like O’Reilly, Greta and Hannity and its entertainment shows like Fox and Friends.

Where I get frustrated is when you make statements and don’t back them up by any source (whether it be CNN or the Nation or Political Affairs).

As you know, there are many legitimate news sources. I believe we should all try to get our news from a variety of sources, and then reach our own conclusions about the facts.

I religiously watch a lot of Fox News AND CNN so I get both sides. I invest the time required to do this so I can make balanced observations about the issues.

What bothers me is when an individual will get all their news from sources with a common agenda, and then pronounce the stories as fact. I don’t want to name names, but the one guy’s name begins with P and ends with ete.

He seems to think Sean Hannity is the next coming of Jesus Christ.

I never defended this site’s use of Ron Carey press releases. I think this site has done great original work, but reprinting Ron Carey press releases isn’t that good work.

As for Dodd, the liberal Marc Ambinder writes in the liberal Atlantic Monthly the following about the language in question:

“The truth is that the codicil was added in conference by mutual agreement of House and Senate Democrats and the White House.

Dodd, the chair of the banking committee, agreed to this language because most all of the stakeholders – including the administration – wanted it.”

In other words, even though Dodd was not a conferee he (as the powerful chairman of the Senate Banking Committee) had say on the amendment which came from House and Senate Democrats on the issue of paying bonuses to the AIG executives which would have bankrupted their company except for the generosity of the American taxpayer.

You’re right, you never mentioned Chris Dodd. I did. I mentioned how Democrats like Dodd have been in charge of our financial system and have made the laws that have gotten us where we are today. Dodd also received $103,000 in campaign contributions from AIG last year. Obama, by the way, received $101,000 from AIG.

But when I cite facts that are easily researched by, for example, going to the Federal Elections Commission website, you deny them because you don’t like the source (ie. the WSJ, Fox Business network, the Weekly Standard, etc.). You never, ever cite anything to back up your opinions. Incidentally, I’d like to know what you consider legitimate news sources.

You are not a moderate Democrat. Nothing about what you post is moderate. You are a liberal Democrat who wants to take money from people who have it and redistribute other people’s money to people who don’t. That’s a legitimate political philosophy and is worthy of debate. Democrats are in control of our government. And Republicans were elected by their constituents based on their ideas. Dodd’s amendment did not have the bonus language in there at all, and the Senate version passed to reconciliation without the language. So where did it come from? Sometime during the final reconcilliation process before the bill passed. And guess what? Dodd wasn’t a part of that process. But here’s who was:

From the House: Obey, Rangel, Waxman, Lewis (CA), and Camp. From the Senate: Inouye; Baucus; Reid; Cochran; Grassley.

The Republican Party is changing as is everything else in this world. Ultimately in a democracy it is the constituents at the end of the day that decide by selection and rejection what the major parties stand for. Republicans need to start entering fields where we are scarce. We have essentially due to comfort levels have abandoned pursuit of many professions in academia and government. This has to change. Republicans have to distinguish themselves between Democrats in these fields. So many people see this divide as between “us or them” because of the partisan imbalances in these professional areas. Republicans must set a new standard of what good government is and what is bad. We can’t have whole blocks of certain professions and workers exclude us do to self interests. Everyone deserves to have alternatives and we’ve’ let tone party monopolize these areas. Government against private sector is not enough anymore. We’ve abandoned whole sectors to one partisan influence.

Palusen can’t do any worse than the Democrats. You know all of the outrage over the AIG bonuses that are being paid? Do you know WHY they are being paid? It’s because Sen. Chris Dodd put an amendment into the bailout bill which restricted executive pay but specifically EXEMPTED such bonuses from the restriction. Chris Dodd could have out right prohibited these bonuses, but instead chose to allow them to be paid out.

As a Democrat, how can you have confidence in these people danbrome? (Of course, I’m not convinced danbrome is a real person. My theory is that he’s a computer bot over at MoveOn.org that spits out George Soros talking points.)

Did you see the documentary on CNBC showing the interview with President Bush concerning the Wall Street bailouts?

The President said he would not “let a meltdown occur ON HIS WATCH”. That’s why he pressed hard for a huge bailout.

If Bush would have been President on January 20th, he would have faced the same ugly scene as Obama did, and as he suggested in the interview, he would have forced to spend untold trillions himself.

WTF are you talking about? Bush added less to the debt in eight years than Obama is going to add in 20 months. How can you claim that the debt would have grown by another $6.1 trillion? That’s completely illogical.

As for the war, I will give President Bush credit for not budgeting for the war. The reason is because it informed the American people exactly how much was being spent on the war each year. Versus had he hidden the costs of the war in a budget, like Obama will, the American people would not know how much was being spent.

As for the crisis, let the record reflect that he sent Treasury officials up to Congress 14 times to discuss and demand new regulations regarding Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and he was blocked by Chris Dodd and Barney Frank on that issue. Let the record also reflect that Robert Rubin, Lawrence Summers and Tim Geitner all backed the rules which created the mortgage mess and they are all serving in one capacity or another in the Obama administration.
