PAWLENTY APPROVAL RATING

By Ryan Flynn | April 3, 2009

Defying the odds of so many of his peers, Governor Pawlenty is still holding strong at an approval rating above 50%.  A Familiar place for the Governor indeed as he has consistently enjoyed the confidence of Minnesotans.

I wrote about the Governor’s approval rating holding steady a couple of weeks back as well.

These continued positive numbers should get the DFL faithful riled up as they have been getting quite desperate lately with their lines of attacks against the Governor.

One other interesting thing to notice, Governor Jim Doyle from Wisconsin is at an approval of 32%, no wonder he wants to have joint press conferences with Governor Pawlenty!

“These continued positive numbers should get the DFL faithful riled up as they have been getting quite desperate lately with their lines of attacks against the Governor.”

I don’t know if it makes much sense for Republicans to tell Democrats what they should and should not get riled up about. I like to think my anger management issues are my own.

The governor is a formidable politician and a very likable guy. I don’t agree with him on a lot of things, and I haven’t and won’t vote for him, but since his approval is necessary if anything is to be done about the huge problems this state, I don’t think there is anything to be gained by trashing him, or really treating him with anything other than the respect he deserves as the elected governor of this state, and as a man of essentially good will.

I’m betting that Lori Swanson’s approval rating is well below 50%.

  3. Hiram Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 9:27 AM

I, for one, am willing to put off the bitter and acrimonious partisanship until next summer. I suggest my Republican friends do the same, as a lot of them are, quite without advice from me.

  4. chile Says:

Ryan says: “These continued positive numbers should get the DFL faithful riled up.”

Hiram responds: “I don’t know if it makes much sense for Republicans to tell Democrats what they should and should not get riled up about.”

Hiram, notice that Ryan said “should get the DFL faithful riled up” … not “the DFL should get riled up”.

  5. Troy Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 9:37 AM

I think Hiram’s advice here is supremely self serving, and synonymous with “please ignore the stupid clogging MN govt until next summer”.

However, there certainly is no need to be bitter and acrimonious about it. Simply and cheerfully point it out when you see it, and be sure to assign responsibility appropriately. Especially when it comes to your side: a real partisan wants their side to be the best it can be.

  6. Hiram Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 9:39 AM

“I’m betting that Lori Swanson’s approval rating is well below 50%.”

One of my least favorite politicians is Mike Hatch. I think it’s one of the more curious phenomena that everyone who comes into conatact with him, either as a friend or as an adversary, somehow gets diminished.

Mike Hatch is the Typhoid Mary of Minnesota politics.

  7. Hiram Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 9:41 AM

“Hiram, notice that Ryan said “should get the DFL faithful riled up””

Fair enough. Consider the sentence to be modified to read:

“I don’t know if it makes much sense for Republicans to tell the DFL faithful what they should and should not get riled up about.”

Republicans can tell the DFL unfaithful anything they want.

  8. chile Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 9:48 AM

Hiram, I’ve never sensed anything “bitter and acrimonious” about your partisanship.

Your partisanship is tranparent. However, your motives are not clear and your arguments are nonsensical.

  9. chile Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 9:58 AM

Hiram, If I say “It should rain today”, does that mean

    A) I believe it will rain today based on an informed opinion?

    or

    B) I am telling nature what it should do?

  10. chile Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 10:09 AM

Hiram, to say that Hatch has “diminished” Swanson is a bold statement. He could never knock her down has much as he’s built her up.

Q: Where would Swanson be today if she never worked for Hatch?

A: She’d probably be a just another no-name attorney – maybe even happily married.

  11. Hiram Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 11:09 AM

“However, your motives are not clear and your arguments are nonsensical.”

My motives are clear to me, it’s just that I have a bunch of them and they are often in conflict. I do want a budget deal, and I don’t want it to take six special sessions to get it. In exchange for that, I am perfectly willing to give up some partisan advantages. I hope that’s clear enough.

“If I say “It should rain today”, does that mean

“A) I believe it will rain today based on an informed opinion?

    or

“B) I am telling nature what it should do?”

It depends on what you mean by “should”. “Should” can be predictive, but it also can imply a moral judgment. My guess is that you mean A, but I can’t know what you are thinking.

  12. D Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Anyone willing to unilaterally disarm (aka “let’s all play nice until next summer”) is truly a moron.

More importantly, it allows the DFL controlled Senate and House RAPE the people of Minnesota in St. Paul this year, under the protection of “Let’s all get along”.

Not be, bub. I’ll be loading as much blood into the water that I can. And watching these fraud DFLers in GOP districts get bit.

  13. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 11:54 AM

I am much more impressed with how his negatives are also climbing as the session drags on. If he keeps up this pace, he will be in majority negative status by session’s end.

    November: 38 percent
    December: 39 percent
    January: 41 percent
    February 44 percent
    March 46 percent

  14. Hiram Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 12:16 PM

“Anyone willing to unilaterally disarm (aka “let’s all play nice until next summer”) is truly a moron.”

I have always thought of myself as a moron, but I don’t think unilateral disarmament, a let’s play nice until next summer attitude is bad politics here. People are beyond sick of partisanship. We are in the midst of an economic crisis, and I think they want the legislature and the governor to work together to solve it.

  15. D Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Hiram…the first step is admitting the truth. Congrats.

Changing the environment in the voter’s mind does not happen overnight. I know exactly why you (and your DFL buddies) would like to keep the dust low and avoid the battles. Because, by next summer, there would be NO time to be able to reverse the voter’s minds by showing them how bad the DFL positions are.

Thankfully, and hopefully, the GOP isn’t as stupid as you think and aren’t suckers for your tripe, Hiram.

  16. Hiram Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 12:38 PM

“Because, by next summer, there would be NO time to be able to reverse the voter’s minds by showing them how bad the DFL positions are.”

Sure there is. Elections take forever. And no one is paying attention to a parade of press conferences from the lower depths of the capitol a year and a half before election day.

I actually think this board made a fundamental if perhaps unavoidable mistake in this regard. It released all of it’s anti-Franken stuff months before the election. By election day, it was old news and pretty much of a non-factor.

  17. chile Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Hiram, what anti-Franken stuff are you referring to?

His failure to pay work comp? The 17 states that he cheated out of taxes? Porn-O-Rama? His jokes about raping Lesley Stahl? Getting endorsed by ACORN? The verbal abuse of a college student? His explosive temper? The fact that other DFLers are sickened by him?

  18. Hiram Says:

Yes, that about sums it up. You also have to be careful about deciding what’s damaging. Personally, I found the ridicule of the college student endearing. Politicians should make a point of doing that more often.

  19. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 1:48 PM

“His failure to pay work comp? The 17 states that he cheated out of taxes? Porn-O-Rama? His jokes about raping Lesley Stahl? Getting endorsed by ACORN? The verbal abuse of a college student? His explosive temper? The fact that other DFLers are sickened by him?”

And still Norm Coleman couldn’t beat him. What does this say about Minnesota’s respect for the job Norm did while in office?

  20. chile Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 2:07 PM

Leroy, you jackass, what does that say about the DFL party that endorsed him?

  21. Proud Republican Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 2:09 PM

I think Minnesotans appreciate a check of any sort on this run a way speed train!! I tell you I’m amazed…really amazed that the Dems are destroying their party. They must really believe that their marxist ideas are sound. Scary….very scary. I do not worry so much for the future of the party as I do this country’s fiscal health. I cringe as I wonder what to do with a soon evaporating dollar. We are going to have inflation through the roof boys and girls even if the Dems allow nuclear power plants to be considered it would take 15 years of regulatory hurdles to get to first dig. At least that is what the paper said today. Windmills alone won’t do it. Natural gas would be a big help and I can see Obama pushing that since its cheaper and cleaner than Petrol. Also Obama is losing the Iraq war that we finally had won. Everyone has aknowledged that Iraq is a stablized democracy now. People wanted goode “change” not change replacing their dollars.

  22. President Barack Obama Says:
    April 3rd, 2009 at 2:54 PM

Hi, this President Barack Obama…for too long the Chinese and their generous government have been kept at too far a distance. This is due to are difference in ideology of how the allocations of scarce resources should be administered. Now we need to work with our Asian neighbors. I have promised no intervention in Tibet in favor of entrusting our rich country’s goodwill to the Chinese people. I have also sold off 300 million acres of underused Federal California land. The Chinese are tickled pink now and have no problem with my stimulus that will strengthen by stronger depreciation in the dollar. Remember I inherited this mess from George W. Bush. I will continue to say this until I am thrown out of office. If that happens I will file a lawsuit against the American people. I have reason to believe that I’m too loved and worshiped for that unlikely scenario to bear fruit.

There might not be a better Republican, but this is Minnesota and a third term is not granted in the same mannor as the first two. Pawlenty is a bit below that “hall of fame” level.

    danbrome,
Your ignorance is amazing. Your limited world view is a disgrace. As people of your ilk always do you ignore facts that exist because you limit where you get your limited knowledge from.

It is a pity that people of your ilk are so uneducated but I guess that explains why you insult people in the Special Olympics – like most ignorant people you go after people who are truely in need to make yourself feel more manly.

    You are a disgrace danbrome.

Still waiting for danbrome to post a moderate position on one current issue. I have done so and he ignored me. danbrome is a coward who lies about his political position. I guess if I believed the way he does I would be ashamed to share my positions too.

For more than forty years this country was engaged in the Cold War. The enemy was the U.S.S.R. and the spread of communism. Today the enemy is liberal democrats and the spread of communism.

Interesting how he is accusing people he disagrees with (and apparently can’t respond to) of posting under multiple handles there too. It seems to be the method of operation of his ilk when they are obviously ignorant of the true facts – or just don’t want people to know the true facts.

Nice post Chili. You are right, danbrome is a coward as are all his fellow socialists here.

  52. Integrity Says:

Name five areas in which your views are more conservative than that of socialistic principles.

  56. Pete F Says:
    April 6th, 2009 at 6:14 AM

    Integrity/danbrome/Yoda,

Everyone of your posts prove that you are a socialist. You complain because you are called a socialist and then call me a right wing conservative Republican.

I have posted some moderate stands that I have that do not line up with the Republican party platform.

Integrity/danbrome/Yoda has refuesed to do so.

You are a liar and a coward – not to mention a socialist out to destroy capitalism.

You will lose. The socialist policies being put in place today will be rejected in the next election.

    2010 is looking better everyday.

  57. Karl Marx Says:
    April 6th, 2009 at 6:49 AM

As you are aware, socialism is not meant to be permanent, but rather it shall serve only as the as the means to progress from a Kapitalistic society to a Communist Utopia.

In President Obama’s firt 75 days he has made remarkable progess in creating a socialist super highway; one that will bring us to complete communism within the next generation.

I thank danbrome and Integrity for their support.

I will delve into the detail of our great cause at a later date. For now, I must be off to my morning jazzercise class.

  58. Hiram Says:
    April 6th, 2009 at 8:05 AM

I think it’s a matter of perspective. My take on the first days of the Obama administration is that he has made a huge effort to prevent the collapse of the capitalist system, something that was well under way when he took office. It remains to be seen whether he will be successful in that undertaking.

Basically, both Presidents Obama and Bush have had two choices, to do something, or to do nothing. They have chosen the latter, but let there be no doubt, if he had chosen the former, major segments of the economy would have fallen into government hands, simply because the private sector no longer wanted them. The issue is not whether we want to nationalize these companies, rather the issue is how much effort are we willing to expend to put nationalization off.

  59. Integrity Says:
    April 6th, 2009 at 9:09 AM

    Pete-
    quicksand-

Your request is not possible. Anything other than the right wing conservative views that you hold is considered socialism in your mind. Your definition of socialism is anyone who is to the left of your far right thinking.

    Pete/chile-

So far your big “stand” against the ReBublicans has been that you are against the death penalty. Are you saying that because you are against the death penalty that this somehow makes you independent of the current right wing ReBublican party?

I don’t care what you call me. Call me a socialist, a liberal, a communist, or any of the other names that you use to describe those who are different from you.

As for your thoughts that you continually post about how great 2010 will be for you and the ReBublicans, I posted about that last week. Of course you will pick up seats; you have lost so many it would be unreal for you to lose more. You have nowhere to go but up. You drastically underestimate 2 things about president Obama. First, you underestimate his popularity. Second, you underestimate his ability to get things done and bring about the change we need in these desperate economic times. His work has, and will continue to give the progressive brand more and more street credit with the voters of Minnesota and of the country. The voters aren’t going to “reject” what Obama is doing in 2010. However, if that’s what you have to tell yourself to sleep at night, I understand. You can just continue to be the crotchety old man on the sidelines while Obama moves this country forward. Don’t worry; Obama isn’t going to leave you behind. His plans for the country count ALL of us in, no matter who we are or what we thing. We are ALL considered “one of us” in his plans for the country.

Lastly, when you use the word “everyone” in the context you did above, it makes you look foolish. Just like when you use the word “unrelevant.” What you meant to say above was “Every one of your statements…”

Note that the word “thing” above should be “think” in the sentence:

“Don’t worry; Obama isn’t going to leave you behind. His plans for the country count ALL of us in, no matter who we are or what we thing.”

I mentioned three item Integrity. The death penalty is just one of them. On the other hand it is one more than you have.

Would you like me to start picking apart you posts for spelling and grammar errors in the future? I don’t usually bother unless something strikes me as funny or ironic but I could if you like. However I would prefer to debate the issues but I can certainly understand that someone like you would focus on that since you are typically on the losing end of most debates.

And I don’t NEED Obama’s help. I have been doing just fine on my own. Unlike you I am a productive member of society.

Integrity. Obama’s plans do “count ALL of us in, no matter who we are or what we thing[sic]”

He wants to rob Peter to pay Paul. Paul is already getting more than he’s owed. Peter of today, has earned his money and deserves to keep it. Peter of tomorrow, includes our kids and grandkids. Obama is truly shameful. Jimmy Carter should be relieved, he will no longer be considered the worst President ever.

Face the facts Integrity, you’re a socialist. Quicksand offered you an opportunity to prove otherwise. and you did a danbrome-style cut and run. You and danbrome are both cowards, silly socialist cowards.

BTW integrity. I am in favor of the death penalty. Kathleen Soliah, should have been given the death penalty. Obama’s approval rating continues to sink. He’ll be just fine in 2010, because he won’t be facing re-election. The Democrats in Congress will be the big losers.

When are we gonna get back to the lost contest in the Senate race?

Does anybody think the Governor has the guts to sit back and watch the endless appeals without seating a Senator to represent us?

  65. danbrome Says:
    April 6th, 2009 at 11:27 AM

    Pete..

With all due respect, do you think ANY American needs Obama’s help?

Just because you are doing just fine doesn’t mean there aren’t millions who are hurting right now.

Your ignorance and pompous attitude is astonishing!

    A question for quicksand:

Name five areas in which your views are more moderate than Erik Paulsen’s conservative right wing agenda.

danbrome, what are you afraid of? That you parents will find out you’re a socialist?

It can’t be any worse than the time you told them your favorite part of high school was showering after gym class.

danbrome, as usual you either can’t comprehend what I am saying or you are twisting my words so that they fit your twisted view of the world.

I clearly said I do not need Obama’s type of help and that I do not want Obama’s type of help. Integrity clearly stated that Obama was going to help everyone which to me is the problem because not everyone requires or wants his type of help.

Do I feel anyone needs Obama’s help? No. Do I feel that people need my help? Yes. Since Obama is not helping them but is taking from some to help others you really can’t call it Obama helping others can you?

I do not feel that these large corporations that have failed due to their errors need my help and I resent the fact that the goverment is taking money from me to help them. I believe the investers should be footing the bill not me.

General Motors and Chrysler have failed. They took my money. Obama is helping them because of the union connections. They should be allowed to fail and to let some other company feel the void they leave.

BTW, you need to move past your boy losing to Eric Paulsen.

  71. danbrome Says:

So let me get this straight…

Any enterprise that “fails” should be left to go under, even though catastophic consequences would result? What are you crazy?

Oh that’s right, you are a consevative.

    Nevermind!

    danbrome/yoda

You obviously do not understand anything about capitalism. You degree in arithmetic does you no good when it comes to common sense.

You continue to fail to have a valid argument so you once again you turn to your child like attacks on me. It is really difficult for your ilk to have an intellegent conversation isn’t it?

You need to get used to being a failure danbrome because this is just the start of the Democrat downfall.

2010 is looking really good thanks to yahoo’s like you.

Still waiting for danbrome to prove that he is a moderate by posting at least one current issue that he is a moderate on.

    chile..

    I embrace the truth.

Hussein is my new Democratic President, Stuart Smalley is my new Democratic United States Senator, and the conservative movement is in decline.

danbrome, I’m not in Paulsen’s district, but I’ll try to answer you question anyway, because you are a moron.

In looking at Paulsen’s voting record the past four years, I’d say I’m more conservative that he is.

I’m not more “moderate” that Erik in any “area.”
I think his idea of teaching Mandarin Chinese to 6 year olds would not be the best use of educational resources.

So to answer your question danbrome, I can’t offer you five “areas.” where I’m more moderate than Paulsen. I can’t even give you one “area.”

Now danbrome, please answer the following for me:

Name five areas in which your views are more conservative than that of socialistic principles.

  78. Pete F Says:
    April 7th, 2009 at 6:15 AM

danbrome has gone back into hiding. danbrome demands answers but refuses to answer questions himself.

danbrome is a far left socialist who claims to be a moderate.

danbrome is a liar and a coward.
