MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “WASHINGTON WALZ FUNDRAISES WITH NANCY PELOSI”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | June 7, 2009

Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s attendance at a fundraiser for Rep. Tim Walz.

“Just a few days after Rep. Tim Walz expressed his support for a possible transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to Minnesota prisons, he joined with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to raise money for his campaign.  Despite the fact that Pelosi has recently accused the men and women of the CIA fighting terrorists of lying to Congress, Walz sees fit to make her a headliner at a fundraiser in Minneapolis.  The residents of the 1st Congressional District have to wonder where Walz’s priorities really are – Minneapolis, San Francisco, or Washington?”

Rep. Tim Walz Said He Would Be Willing to House Guantanamo Bay Detainees In Minnesota. “Rep. Tim Walz said this morning that he would be willing to house Guantanamo Bay detainees in Minnesota prisons such as the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, provided that their specific legal rights are determined before they are transferred to the United States.”  (Eric Roper, “The Big Question: Walz Conditionally Open To Some Guantanamo Detainees,” Star Tribune, June 3, 2009)

Nancy Pelosi Was Briefed On Interrogation Techniques In September 2002:

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday accused the Bush administration and the CIA of misleading Congress about waterboarding prisoners, escalating a political fight with Republicans over her knowledge of the treatment of detainees. … Pelosi’s comments amount to an allegation that the CIA violated its legal obligation to keep congressional leaders accurately informed. … The attacks on Pelosi gained traction last week when the CIA released a chart that showed she and former Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.), who were then the top members of the House Intelligence Committee, were the first lawmakers to be told of the CIA’s interrogation program. The table said both members attended a briefing in September 2002 during which the CIA described the particular interrogation techniques ‘that had been employed.’ In August of that year, records now show, the CIA used the waterboarding method on Al Qaeda suspect Abu Zubaydah at least 83 times.” (Greg Miller, “Pelosi Says Congress Was Misled About CIA Tactics,” Los Angeles Times, May 15, 2009)

These Intelligence Reports Directly Contradict Pelosi’s Previous Denials That She Had Been Briefed On Enhanced Interrogation Techniques:

April 23, 2009: Speaker Pelosi Said She Was Not Told That Waterboarding Or Any Other Harsh Interrogation Tactic Was Used. Pelosi: “We were not — I repeat, not — told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used. Flat-out, they never briefed us that this was happening. In fact, they said they would if and when they did.” (Fox News’ “Studio B,” 4/23/09)

This seems to indicate that the second term congressman has a fair deal of pull already in congress if he can get the speaker to come out to his state for a visit and a shakedown of the donors.

Will John Boehner be coming out to raise cash for Michele Bachmann any time soon?

    Somehow I doubt it.

Fundraising in politics? Who has ever heard of such a thing?

Leroy, you jackass, how drunk was Walz?

More drunk than when he had the Garrison Keillor fundraiser?

What promise did the “highly unfavorable” Pelosi make to Walz, that allowed her appearance?

(MBB/Ryan, I’ll be looking for the details of Pelosi’s travel – did she fly United?)

  4. Mr. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 3:33 PM

You can call her highly unfavorable all you like.

There still remains a reason why she is the Speaker of the House and John Boehner is MINORITY leader.

  5. Dash Riprock Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 3:51 PM

Leroy, you dumbass, I would surely want Nancy Pelosi appearing on my behalf if I were Walz. She is quite popular nowdays:

    Favorable Rating – Gallup Poll

    Nancy Pelosi – 34%
    Dick Cheney – 37%

Maybe he could schedule Rangel, Daschle, and Geithner for a tax advice forum also. He could always have Joe Biden speak on charitable giving. He averaged $369 a year for the past decade while making millions. For the grand finale, Ted Kennedy could teach swimming lessons for donations.

The Democrat Party is nothing but a bunch of lying hypocrites.

  6. chile Says:

    Leroy, you jackass,

Nancy “Porky” Pelosi is highly unfavorable.

  7. Hiram Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 4:06 PM

    Nancy Pelosi – 34%
    Dick Cheney – 37%

Does this mean that Minnesota Republicans will be inviting Dick Cheney to campaign for their candidates next year?

  8. chile Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 4:11 PM

Hiram, let me help you out here.

The First District is conservative district.

Tim Walz is no Tim Penny.

Nancy Pelosis is a liberal botox skank

  9. Hal Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 5:07 PM

A conservative district where the conservative candidate couldn’t even hit 33%?

    Yep, that’s a conservative district.

  10. Vernon Jorgensen Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 6:08 PM

Did Nancy fly in on her 727?

  11. Dash Riprock Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 6:56 PM

It was either her Boeing 757 or her broom.

  12. chile Says:
    June 7th, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Hal, Republicans held that district from 95-06. Conservative Tim Penny held it from 83-94. It was controlled by democrats for decades before that.

Walz came in with tons of out of state funding, masquerading as Tim Penny. Pelosis’ appearance is further evidence that Walz is a true blue liberal.

  13. Chris Says:
    June 8th, 2009 at 1:14 AM

    Mr.,

Gil Gutknecht had then-Speaker Newt Gingrich come to Rochester for a fundraiser in his second term. I know, becuase I went to the fundraiser. Did that mean that Gil also had a great deal of clout in Congress?

  14. Hal Says:
    June 8th, 2009 at 7:32 AM

    32.9%.

Seems like the tide has changed.

  15. chile Says:
    June 8th, 2009 at 8:47 AM

Hal, that should have been …

Hal, Republicans held that district from 95-06. Conservative Democrat Tim Penny held it from 83-94. It was controlled by Republicans for decades before that. (Sorry, but I had just scene the Liberal botox skank Pelosi on the 10 o’clock news)

Brian Davis was a poor choice as he is a wealthy Mayo Doctor and 95% of Mayo doctors are known socialists. Also, Davis and zero political experience. The Republicans should have endorsed Dick Day.

The tide will turn on Walz once the voters of the First realize that he too is a liberal botox skank.

  16. Chris Says:
    June 8th, 2009 at 10:52 AM

One other note about Gil Gutknecht: After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Gil had the Justice Department move the blind shiekh, Omar Abdel-Rahman, who attacked the World Trade Center in 1993, from our federal prison in Rochester, MN to a SuperMax prison in Colorado. Gil did not want our great medical city, Rochester, to be a terrorist target. I think it’s shocking that Congressman Walz would suggest bringing terrorists from Gitmo to Rochester.

  17. danbrome Says:
    June 8th, 2009 at 11:29 PM

    Chris..

    Your babble is clueless.

Why was Gil right, and Tim is wrong?

No spin, tell me why. And no quoting Sean Hannity!

  18. Chris Says:
    June 9th, 2009 at 1:38 AM

    brome,

My babble is clueless? WTF are you talking about? Let me spell it out for you since you’re too stupid to understand. Gil Gutknecht was concerned about making Rochester a terrorist target after 9/11 because the terrorist who bombed the WTC in 1993, Omar Abdel-Rahman, was in Rochester’s federal prison. Gil petitioned the Justice Department to have the blind Shiekh moved from Rochester to the Supermax prison in Colorado. Gil’s move was supported by the Mayo Clinic and widely heralded as nobody wants a terrorist in their Congressional District unless housed in a super-maximum prison facility.

Now, Walz is suggesting that we remove the terrorists from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and put them in the federal prison in Rochester. If the federal prison in Rochester wasn’t secure enough to house the blind Shiekh, why would we want terrorists from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba housed in the medical capital of the world?

Brome, if you weren’t such a meathead, you’d understand this. By the way, what grade are you in?

  19. chile Says:
    June 9th, 2009 at 8:56 AM

Chris, please allow me to dumb it down for liberal danbrome. He’s prfoundly stupid.

    Liberal danbrome:

Gil Gutknecht wanted to move a terrorist out of Minnesota, that is a good thing.

Tim Walz want to move terrorists into Minnesota, that is a bad thing.

  20. Joe Steck Says:
    June 9th, 2009 at 3:42 PM

I believe Mr Walz has fallen in love with the power of Washington. He doesn’t answer e-mail/phone calls etc. when you challenge him. He has one issue that fooled way too many in Southern Minnesota “I support guns”. Other then that, he is becoming way out of touch with the core values of his district. We are farmers/blue collar workers with one metropolitan area (Rochester).

We can’t afford higher taxes on food/booze/cigaretts/gas/milk or earnings. The stimulus bill that he voted on without reading only has put about 5% into the economy (the majority of the 700 Billion is to be spent in 2010 and 2012 (election years).

Real jobs are being lost (not many government jobs, but private jobs). Many people are taking pay cuts across the board so their friends and co-workers won’t be fired (again, not many of these are government jobs). Car dealers are being forced out of business due to government takeover of 2 of the big three auto makers (loss of jobs due to government takeover) yet Pelosi was in MN to tout $107 thousand (yes thousand not million) for some summer jobs (wow). I best she spent more money on travel expenses then what was given to Minnesota.

Mr Walz, if this is who you want to be associated with ( a person who has virtually no core beliefs that reflect that of the voters of the first district) then I think it is time you come right out and tell us in your district who you really are.

The Republican party is floundering. Pelosi is in town and all they can say is “She is calling the CIA liars” no wonder we have so many fringe politicians in Minnesota when that is the best the opposition party can come up with.

MN GOP give me a call and I can help you talk about items which Minnesotans care about, then maybe you can compete again.

  21. danbrome Says:
    June 10th, 2009 at 3:22 PM

    Joe..

Ever consider a run for public office?

  22. Chris Says:
    June 10th, 2009 at 4:47 PM

    brome,

I see you didn’t answer my argument about why it’s a bad idea for Walz to bring terrorists to our prison in Rochester. This is typical of you because you never answer any argument I raise. Maybe they haven’t taught critical thinking yet in the fourth grade.

  23. danbrome Says:
    June 10th, 2009 at 10:10 PM

    Chris..

With proper security, a “terrorist” can be detained with complete confidence. Congressman Walz knows that each detainee must be evaluated on a case by case basis. He accepts the fact that prisons in the U.S. are more than adequate to secure these detainees.

He is not interested in grandstanding, or buring his head in the sand when it comes to making tough decisions.

I do not fault Gil for his desire to keep Rochester safe. That was his job.

However, a suggestion now that no detainees can come to Rochester is foolish. Walz knows this, and will say it out loud.

  24. danbrome Says:
    June 10th, 2009 at 10:19 PM

    chile..

What would your plan be to detain the prisoners, assuming that Gitmo must be closed?

  25. Chris Says:
    June 11th, 2009 at 1:28 AM

    brome,

The Federal prison in Rochester is not the kind of maximum security prison that we should be using to house terrorist detainees. What’s wrong with the facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba? It’s perfectly secure.

It’s interesting that Walz wants the terrorists in Rochester. Mayo supported moving the blind Sheikh, who was one of the 1993 WTC bombers. Doesn’t Walz support the Mayo Clinic?

  26. danbrome Says:
    June 11th, 2009 at 11:09 AM

    Chris..

Oh that’s right. Walz is either with us, or against us.

What else does the Mayo Clinic support that Walz may not?

Try again, and this time use your brain.

  27. Chris Says:
    June 11th, 2009 at 12:42 PM

    brome,

You’re the one not using your brain. Anyone who thinks it’s a good idea to have terrorists in our country in a prison that isn’t of the highest security — in the medical capital of the world for goodness sake — is a meathead. Rochester doesn’t even want coal trains running through their city because of the Mayo Clinic let alone the likes of Kahlid Sheikh Mohammed.

And let’s not forget that once the terrorists are in our federal prisons, the ACLU will be sending lawyers to represent them and trying to have them released from prison. Finally, do you think it’s a good idea to have terrorists in the general population of our country’s prisons?

  28. Chris Says:
    June 11th, 2009 at 12:42 PM

    brome,

If you support having terrorists in our prisons down here, why not put them next door to you?

  29. Chris Says:
    June 11th, 2009 at 5:18 PM

    P.S. brome,

I couldn’t remember where the prison was in Rochester so I looked on Map Quest. It’s right across the street from the Rochester Community and Technical College. It’s kiddy-corner from the Olmsted Medical Center Hospital. It’s nearby three parks. And it’s about 1.5 miles from the Mayo Clinic and about 1 mile from the Mayo Civic Center. Sounds like a great place to put terrorists.

  30. Joe Steck Says:
    June 11th, 2009 at 8:10 PM

The question is if we want to deport the detainee’s whom we considers a threat to national security.

Should we feel responsible for what kind of treatment they get elsewhere. That always seems to be the big hurdle. We have some detainee’s that other countries would take, but the liberal’s are afraid of how they will be treated once in that other country. (This is also the case in Europe, where the liberal’s are afraid of how the wacko’s of the world will have their rights violated)

It is clear that the American people do not want them here (poll after poll shows we do not want them in US prisons). We want the camp to stay open and for the detainee’s to stay put.

Most of the guests at the bay are bad people who will cause major problems if released into society (no matter where they are released).

It is important to note that Dennis Blair (Director of National Intelligence) almost sounds giddy when saying that “We need some sort of assistance for them to start a new life,” “You can’t just put them on the street. All that is WORK IN PROGRESS.” He is talking about letting the terrorists free in the USA and giving them welfare and access to our tax dollars. This is Obama’s man. Walz’s man. East coast blue bloods, and liberal major city people who are safe in their penthouses away from reality.

These people have no clue that you can’t trust bad people to do good things. It may work in books (theory), but rarely does it work in reality. my guess is that the wacko’s will come to the US, start terrorist groups, blow other American’s up, rape, pillage and then be protected by our court system. Scary, but a reality with this current administration.

I feel we should ship them off to the countries that will take them, and keep the rest locked up until we have conducted proper hearings and found them either guilty or innocent of the charges. If no charges can be made, then these people need to be shipped off to their countries of origin and let them deal with the issues.

As for running for office, I have been asked numerous times over the years. I have always found politics to be very dirty, and I had a family to take care of. Now that my kids are off to college, I have the time, an no longer have to worry about the dirt that comes with a campaign. I will be running for a local office in Mankato to see how I do.

  31. Chris Says:
    June 12th, 2009 at 2:00 AM

    Joe,

I think you make a lot of good arguments. But I disagree that we should prosecute the terrorists and ship off the ones we can’t charge. We tried the police action during the Clinton years and found out that when we sent terrorists back to Yemen and Saudi Arabia, they were released to strike against us again.

I do agree with you about keeping the terrorists off U.S. soil. Putting aside, for a moment, the question of whether our prisons are secure enough for the terrorists (clearly Supermax is, the rest – perhaps not), do we want terrorists milling about the general prison population? Considering that radical Islam is running rampant through many of our prisons and there are some pretty bad actors who will eventually be released, I do not want the likes of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed training new recruits in Supermax.

  32. Joe Steck Says:
    June 12th, 2009 at 7:39 PM

I agree. Many sides to a complex issue. It is sometimes difficult to look at the underlying reasons why fringe groups do/propose what most consider unthinkable acts. Back to Walz .. he really needs to go. There has to be a better candidate in southern Minnesota then him. Gil wasn’t much better. That is why he lost.
